Recently, we blogged about a security update for our Yahoo! Messenger for Windows (8.1) users. Due to restrictions with the Windows Vista operating system, we were unable to push the update out to our Vista users on Yahoo! Messenger 8.1.
We encourage all Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 users running Windows Vista to download and install this security patch, available at http://messenger.yahoo.com/updater.php.
The updater page also includes information on how to check your version of Yahoo! Messenger. If you’re on Yahoo! Messenger version 8.1.0.401 or higher, you don’t need to install this additional patch.
Thanks,

Wow, it seems like every other comment on the blog these days can by summarized by a commenter named “Fitz”:
“yahoo, pls. don’t abandon your project (messenger for vista).. it’s so cool
”
Don’t worry Fitz, we’re working harder than ever on Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista.
You will be able to download a Beta version in the coming months. I wish I could be more specific with a release date at this point because I know how much anticipation our users have had for the entirely new Vista-powered interface.
As soon as we do have a more firm release date, our blog readers will be among the first to know. In the meantime, make sure you’ve provided your email address on our Messenger for Windows Vista page so you won’t miss it.
The work our team is doing with Vista’s new interface technology, WPF, is pioneering, but has taken time to perfect. As we discover the best ways to create WPF applications, we also take time to share knowledge and techniques with other software developers. At the Microsoft MIX conference in May, developers and designers from the Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista team presented some of their work. Check out the videos below for some behind-the-scenes looks at the making of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista.
Design talk on Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista (1:21)
Yahoo! joins Kalani Kordus, Lee Brimelow and Mark Ligameri of Frog Design to show early prototypes, concepts, and the development process.
Tech Talk on Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista (1:00)
Josh Jacobson provides background and a product demonstration, and Eric Burke discusses WPF tips and tricks (WPF tips start at 15:30 in the video).
Again, thanks for your continued patience and interest in the upcoming Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista. We can’t wait to let you take it for a test drive.

The internet has changed how we book travel but one thing that hasn’t been solved is how two people can plan trips together online – until now. With the new Yahoo! Flight Planner plug-in, you and a friend can look up flights together right in the IM window. It’s powered by Yahoo! Farechase, one of the best online sources for great deals on flights.
My friend Amy and I have been thinking about a trip to London, so I IM’d her and invited her to try the plug-in. A window opened up next to our conversation, displaying a flight search box. I entered our destination, London, preferred travel dates and hit the search button, all with Amy looking on from her own computer.
Search results quickly appeared and we began browsing through flight options. Amy realized we wanted nonstop flights only, so from her side, she selected the ‘Refine Results’ option and made sure only nonstop flights would appear in the results. As soon as I found a good flight, I clicked the “Chat About It” button, which automatically sent the details to Amy for consideration:

There are also some handy features like selection indicators. Everytime Amy would click a flight she liked, a thumbs up icon would appear next to it so I knew instantly what she preferred. And when I clicked the “Book it” button, it launched a new browser window with the first step of checkout, and sent Amy an IM message from me that started with “I want to book this flight…”.
The next time you need to arrange a flight with a friend or just want their input on your summer travel plans, invite them to use the Yahoo! Flight Planner plug-in on Messenger. Plug-ins are available for the Windows version of Yahoo! Messenger (8.1).
…Speaking of traveling, Lee Hsien Loong, the prime minister of Singapore, visited Yahoo! headquarters last week. Our own Matthew Skyrm was lucky enough to demonstrate some of our Messenger products to Mr. Loong, like Yahoo! Messenger for the Web, as well as some that are in development like Yahoo! Messenger for Windows Vista. Head over to the NBC11 website to see a short video clip of the visit (enter “Singapore” in the Search Videos box to access the video clip).
