Mac update (with some exciting iPhone news)

May 22, 2009 on 3:02 pm | In Mac version, iphone | 23 Comments

For those of you having issues with the latest Mac OS X update (10.5.7) and Yahoo! Messenger for Mac, help is on the way.

We’ve identified the problems causing the chat room crash and the sign-in problem* (see potential workaround below), and will be releasing those fixes in a new build soon. So stay tuned to the blog; we’ll let you know as soon it’s available. Thanks for your patience.

On an Apple-related note, we’re smiling this week because we hit the 1 million download mark for our Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone app. Thanks to all of our users for giving it a try and providing their feedback. We really appreciate it.

* Here’s a workaround if you are having trouble signing in since you updated to 10.5.7 (and are using a “behind the firewall” connection setting): Try disabling auto-login. To do that, click on the Yahoo! Messenger menu, select “Preferences”, then click on the “General” tab. Uncheck the box that says “Automatically start Yahoo! Messenger”. Quit Yahoo! Messenger completely and relaunch it again. If this fixes the issue, please hold off on turning auto-login back on until we release the new build.

  5. Nobody uses macs, so how about you forget about this version of messenger and fix that piece of rubbish you publish for windows?

  6. Booo! Well… it’s actually a good thing you’re supporting more than one platform. What about Linux, though? When on Earht will we be able to have an official Yahoo Messenger client for text, voice and video all-in-one? Why should OSS developers do your job, guys?

Come on… You have plenty of developers but you have even taken the Linux version off your site. Can you guys really ignore us people for so long? Are you really that tied up with Microsoft that they won’t let you develop something for Linux? If not… please do something about it.

    :(

  7. Obviously Tommy has not be enlightened to the delights of using a Mac and is still stuck in behind his window. Cant wait for the yahoo chat room fix, its so much nicer in a chat room with a Mac, and virus free.

  8. Obviously Tommy doesn’t pay over the odds for the same hardware but in a box with a picture of an Apple on it.

Obviously Tommy is in the future, trialling Windows 7, which is more pleasing and efficient than Max OS.

Obviously Tommy, when he feels like it, uses Linux and feels more powerful, and more secure than Gary ever will do.

  9. Tommy when you say (piece of rubbish) aren’t you really referring to windows itself? and What is more pleasing and efficient is a Mac Mini that runs day and night using very little energy and only needs rebooting for system updates.
Yes I suppose after 7 versions of windows it MAY be getting better, but why do you need Linux to feel more powerful?

  10. I guess Linux is Tommy’s security blanket for when he realises Window’s 7 is REALLY no better than the previous 6

  11. Bob, your inference is in this instance incorrect.

In my usage, what is more pleasing is actually power, in terms of memory and CPU, for the demands I put on them. Mac minis, and Macs in general, may look pretty, but under the hood they are nowhere near the power of an equivalently priced PC (either local PC shop build, or major retailer, even factoring in to this the price of a Windows licence). Of course, if you don’t need the power, are just a casual surfer, IM user, then clearly the pretty box may mean more than more power.

The reasons for feeling more power in Linux are numerous, but choice and visibility are the biggest, I can choose one of a number of desktop systems, boot loaders, compilers etc. and I can see what’s happening underneath by looking at the code.

Myths of PCs are often spread by Mac users, but most PCs I use require rebooting very infrequently, even under heavy, constant daily use. Where as the price of an Apple compared to the price of a PC is clearly visible and quantifiable to all!

At the end of the day, the Web Messenger should be a tool for all platforms, and Yahoo! should concentrate their efforts on the windows client for additional features not viable on the web tool. It’s clear to all, no matter what platform is your favourite, the majority of users are using PCs with Windows.

  12. lol forever at the mac nerds. both platforms – pc and mac – have both the positives and negatives. you like macs? good for you, but you aren’t going to make people see your POV when you act like a condescending douchewad.

  17. This thread is about messenger for mac, not for any other platform. Still with no fix for 10.5.7.
