Sharing updates in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0

April 24, 2009 on 9:49 am | In 9.0 version, Other services | 53 Comments

Over the last year, Yahoo! has launched several products and features to make your online experience more social and help deepen your connections with friends. With the launch of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, we began displaying updates from your friends alongside their status messages for activities they do on Yahoo!, like changing their Avatar or buzzing up a news story.

This week we are expanding the types of updates that can be shared with your Yahoo! Messenger friends. Now when you make updates on the Yahoo! network at places like Yahoo! Movies, Sports, Shopping, Travel, or on other social websites like Twitter, YouTube, Last.fm, and more, you can instantly share it with your friends on Yahoo! Messenger. All told, you can now share updates from dozens of Yahoo! services and nearly twenty non-Yahoo! websites (full list at the end of this post).

To get started, you need to have a Yahoo! profile (it’s free). Once you’ve set that up, go to the Manage my Updates section where you can indicate the sites from which you want to share updates. For non-Yahoo! services, located under “Share More”, you’ll also need to indicate your username. If you tend to use the same username for various services, our handy tool can quickly find your accounts.

TIP: When you’re on the Manage my Updates page, be sure to click the “Show All Yahoo! Sources” link to view all the Yahoo! sites that offer updates. And for the non-Yahoo! sites, click the “Share More” tab to view what’s available

For each site, you’ll see a list of the kinds of activities that will be shared. For example if you rate a movie on Yahoo! Movies or upload photos to Flickr, that will generate an update to your friends. Similarly if you upload a video to YouTube, tweet on Twitter or listen to music on Last.fm, those updates can be shared with your friends on Messenger.

For each site, there are different sharing options (including None if you don’t want to share updates from a particular site). In order to share an update with your friends on Yahoo! Messenger, make sure that you select “Anyone” for that site. By default, Yahoo! sites are already set to share your updates with anyone (at the time you make the update on a particular Yahoo! site, you’ll be notified that it’s going to be shared).

When you make an update on Yahoo! or on another supported site, it will appear below your status message on your friend’s contact lists (if they’re using Yahoo! Messenger 9.0). Here’s an example showing Dee’s latest update from Twitter:

The message below a friend in your contact list shows their latest update. To see their last ten updates, click on their display image and look at the list in their contact card.

Similarly, you can also see your own recent updates by clicking your display image at the top of the Messenger window to reveal your contact card. Your contact card also has a handy “Manage My Updates” link in case you need to make changes to what updates you’re sharing and with whom.

Updates are a great way to share what you’re up to with your friends. Now when you do things like rate movies, upload videos, comment on blogs, listen to music, or review a local restaurant, your friends can get in on the fun.

P.S. – We realize not all users like to share online. So if you’re not up for sharing any updates, just go to your Yahoo! Profile and uncheck the “Share My Updates” box at the top of the Manage My Updates page. But take a look at the list of services – you may find one you want to share with your Messenger friends.

List of supported sites
Updates from dozens of Yahoo! services are supported including Movies, Sports, Games, Video, Answers, Buzz, Local and more. Visit Manage My Updates to see the full list of Yahoo! sites that are supported (be sure to click the “Show All Yahoo! Sources” link).

Below is the list of non-Yahoo! sites that we currently support. More services will get added so check your Yahoo! Profile page regularly to see what’s new!

    What is going on????

  6. It’s kinda useless for twitter and some sites that require update continuously. Please consider a way to pull updates from other sites manually.

    Thank you..

  7. It takes soooo loooong to fetch my updates on other sites, which would make it useless for me.

  8. what about webmessenger, will it get the same advancement?

    Comment by MK — April 27, 2009 #

  9. Well who cares. I haven’t been able to log in to yahell for the past 3 days. Blank profiles abound, and the porn bots reign.

My solution… Cancel and delete my Yahoo accounts. After 9 years, Yahoo is not a necessity amymore.

  10. I wan to pass this confusion on to you caused by updates in Yahoo IM. I have been told by close friends the did not IM me because it said I was connected to someone. This happens from the update description after I connect with someone in my profile. I know this should be evident but there are novice users here who read things literally that I am connected right then to someone else. One very private person thought that if he sent an IM it would go to the person I was connected to. This confusion seems only to happen because in is in a “live” application. I suggest you might have a way to turn off and on update in “live” applications. Another suggestion is in “live” applications you change “connected to” to “been added to connections” or something similar.

    Comment by oneschi — May 4, 2009 #

  13. Hi oneschi,

In case you haven’t already, be sure you’ve enabled your Yahoo! Profile to pick up updates via your blogger site. Go to http://profiles.yahoo.com/share_more.php and click on the Blogger listing and enter your information.

  14. Hi, having a problem seeing my Emoticons with the latest version of yahoo messenger (9.0.0.2152). I had it upgraded to the latest version and since then i am unable to see them. Comes up with a blank box. I do not have admin rights on this computer i had one of our tech guys install the software. Thx

    Comment by Patrick — May 4, 2009 #

  15. I ran into a similar issue with emoticons and i tracked it down to being a permissions issue. If your not part of the administrators or power users group you will see a blank box. I assume you are in a domain structure using windows xp. If so, have your tech support change the permissions on the following folder(s).

    c:\program files\yahoo!

Give the users group – modify permissions and replace all permissions in the sub-folders of that directory.

  16. Patrick and plam602.. both of you have the same problem. the problem comes from internet explorer. you need to enter internet explorer (not mozilla or something else), go to Internet Options, and on Advanced tab, click on Restore Defaults. This should work for you. I had this problem and this worked. Greetings from Romania. I love you people.

  17. Top priority bugs in the latest version (9.0.0.2152) according to my opinion are:
    (1) Messenger moved to right most in the taskbar when minimized. (I know it was supposed to be feature but turns out to be more of an annoyance when you the order of minimized windows you had in mind has been changed and you can’t maximize the right window)
    (2) Aliases are not working for those who has the maximum number (6) of aliases. When you try to add a new alias it shows an error, which is fine because you exceeded alias limit. But after yahoo profile updates, it throws an error even when you try to delete an alias. Happens only if you had 6 aliases before yahoo profiles got updates, works fine for others.

  18. After installing Version 9.0, the background color on the toolbar is so dark I can’t hardly see the buttons, also, the contact list of names are so light I can’t hardly read them. Can this be corrected?

  23. Dear all,
My Y!M is acting funny by buzzing everyone in my contact list behind my back. As the result, people are asking me.

Several of my friends recommended to change password, which I did, but to no avail. I’ve also ran virus check and all clear.

Other people that I talked to are also experiencing similar problem (buzzing issue) and they have no idea to overcome it.

Please advise on how to tackle this matter.

    Thanks!

  24. How can I remove my “Buzz Up” status on messenger? I went to “manage the updates that I broadcast” and unchecked the box, “share my updates”. On my messenger status, it still shows a buzz up message followed by a link to a news story. How do I get rid of it? Thanks.

  26. Hi there,

I’m using this servince for a long time now by creating a profile on mybloglog.com, and i think it’s great.

Anyway what i wanted to ask you is why in the last days I’m recieving buzzes…. from different persons. Seems like it’s not just me…. and also almost all the buzzes are from people that I no longer have in my list.

  27. Is there any way to disable the status changing to messenger? It has really annoyed me to hell. This is somehow similar to Ms. Gaud’s experience, except that we are being poked fun at up to the point that it’s not funny because we are “connected to” each other. I’ve disabled all types of sharing from the Yahoo! Profiles and the status is still there. I even got through all the Yahoo! list of services to change sharing from “Anyone” to “No one” and then even unchecking the “Share My Updates” box. Still, the status shows.

  32. How DARE you automatically UPDATE the Messenger that I have had for well over a DECADE and have my very own innocent grandbabies on and NOT tell me!

On top of THAT, you also broadcast MY personal info INCLUDING my telephone number on out to the freakin’ WORLD!

And THEN, you have the NERVE to BURY the information in order to STOP this!

After all this time of being with you folks, I am now seriously and I joke you NOT, thinking of dropping you folks – like a hot potatoe!

  38. I have updates set to “not show” on my profile however my alias ID is showing updates posted by someone with the same “name” in Hong Kong. Since the alias does not have a profile there is no way I can go in and change settings for that one. My alias is still good – I can send and receive IMs on it. But somehow wires have gotten crossed and someone else is updating my alias. Please look into this for me or contact me for further info. Thanks
