Maintenance work; you may experience service problems

December 5, 2008 on 3:13 pm | In News | 101 Comments

We are performing maintenance on our systems due to an unplanned power equipment issue at one of our third-party co-location facilities.

During this time, some versions of Yahoo! Messenger and its features, like Pingbox, may be temporarily unavailable. We appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience. We expect this maintenance to last several hours.

I use Linux. GYachE client, or Pidgin, since Yahoo chooses NOT to make a client for Linux (you bastards) what else am I supposed to use? However, this message is quite annoying. I probably would be better off if you guys at least ported a version of Yahoo Messenger to Linux (it would be appreciated), but alas I am forced to endure the discrimination because of my choice?

I have a Vista machine as well, and apparently it isn’t experiencing this problem. I managed to access a chat room, and not a single person there apparently had any connection issues. Explain!

    Comment by Brian — December 5, 2008 #

  12. @sassy & @ steven

For those of you who need to use messenger right now and are unable to log in, you can always talk to your contacts using the chat feature embedded in Yahoo! Mail. If that’s unavailable, you should be able to upgrade to Messenger 9.0 and have little to no trouble.

  18. It’s not maintenance, it’s a crash. Seems to be back up 7:30 pm est. I pay for the voice sevices, not very professional of yahoo to not warn users if it really was maintenance, but what can you expect for a company going down hill like they are.

    Comment by Dave — December 5, 2008 #

  19. Hello Ubuntu user here. When you guys had this crash or (Maintence) was the yahoo im servers changed… cantget pidgin to log me in at all. Gyachi wont log in either…. anyone know the new messenger server addy because scs.msg.yahoo.com does not seem to work at all…..would be nice if yahoo took back up the unix program instead us nix users got given the bird. With ubuntu linux on such a massive rise in popularity maybe yahoo should consider opening there source back up…

Yahoo, please make this interruption worth the inconvenience.

Next time, to lessen the infuriating tones of many Yahoo users, you all should e-mail or create an application that will notify all Yahoo Messenger users that you all are updating.

    Changes to firewall access
    November 10, 2008 on 3:46 pm | In News |

If you’re using Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 or earlier and you’re accessing Yahoo! Messenger from behind a firewall, you may see an important message pop up the next time you log in.

To help Yahoo! Messenger run more efficiently, we are making some changes to our servers, specifically those that support access for our users that are behind a firewall (typically those that use Yahoo! Messenger in a corporate environment).

The system message will encourage you to upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0. In about one month, we will be blocking sign in to 8.1 and earlier versions for users that are accessing from behind a firewall. Upgrading to 9.0 will ensure that you can continue to use Yahoo! Messenger.

once again i see yahoo has failed to notify its users of its intentions..”just like changing the profiles..makes me wonder jus what this “maintainance ” is..i dont want to upgrade to 9.0 but it seems like im not gonna have a choice any more..”encourage” yeah right.. i rarely go in the chat rooms now,im sick of bein asked if i want to see some moron jerk off on cam, sick of bein called a whore an worse cos i wont take private messages from people i dont know who jus ask for sex.and what do yahoo do about these people? nothinas per .i keep messenger to talk to the friends i have made over the last 9 yrs..now i have to rethink,do i want to upgrade ..i am so glad the people at yahoo dont run a country cos they dont have one iota of an idea what the fkk they are doin

Web Messenger isn’t working in IE 7. Looks like I have to log into mail just to see if people are online.

Thanks for the “upgrade” that breaks support for third party programs yet keeps Yahoo 8.1 and above working fine. Thanks but no thanks. Yahoo Messenger has caused enough problems for my computer. I’ll just wait for the Trillian, Pidgin and Miranda teams to work on a fix and spread it to each other and other developers.

    Comment by ric — December 5, 2008 #

  54. This really smells like yet-another bogus claim of equipment failure to conceal a software upgrade (perhaps gone awry), an upgrade certainly designed to thwart use of no-spy client software. That is, anything but the latest version distributed by Yahoo.

Or are we waiting until Frys opens in the morning so that someone from Yahoo can run down there and buy a new power supply for the PC that was running the IM network? :-(

When I was in the Internet biz, there would be employee punishment for allowing an outage like this, and doing anything other than just getting back online with the software you had before would be a fireable offense. To be plain: NO SOFTWARE UPGRADES WHILE FIXING AN OUTAGE!

If you *are* changing software for any reason other than to get the service restored, then I hadn’t realized Yahoo was trying to court Microsoft by acting like Microsoft. “Upgrade and run our software or be exterminated” is Microsoft’s mantra. Is it now Yahoos?

You also say you’ve got out-sourced co-location. Did you remember to get DIVERSIFIED co-location, and then maybe buy two servers that are independently able to run all this and put one in a different place, just in case? I’m sorry, but the IM system really feels like it is all run from one PC sitting under a guys desk and if not a not-so-stealthy software upgrade, the Pepsi can got spilled into the works.

    Comment by VNuckolls — December 5, 2008 #

  55. My IM was back up after 1 1/2 hours…got it back about 7:30 EST.

BUT, my friend who lives a few miles away did not encounter this maintenance outage…odd indeed!!

My problem now is that for some reason it seems that our versions are no longer compatible…when we are chatting he can no longer buzz me, invite me to cam, there are no audibles or invironments…this was NOT a problem between us BEFORE this maintenance that I ran into.

    Any thoughts from anyone?

  58. Oh my. Poor Yahoo. Who is driving you down the tubes? Who green lights this kind of stuff? The profiles fiasco was a big enough bomb, but this looks like another forced upgrade in disguise. Lets hope you don’t block out 3rd party messengers if thats the case, in which case I’ll be bummed for choosing Linux as my OS.

You know on a side note, it would be cool for Yahoo to start embracing the community more and perhaps even OSS…

…but this is about the messenger. Please prove me wrong. Don’t let this be another golden turd. I used to love Yahoo. But now … ahh I don’t know.

  59. My yahoo is working fine, its Yahoo Mobile that wont work. Anyone else have this problem???

    Comment by April — December 5, 2008 #

  60. If anyone had any doubts that Yahoo is sneaking a software upgrade in on us designed to lock-out older and non-Yahoo clients, my trusty old copy of gaim (that worked fine two weeks ago) now instantly reports the following when you start it:

    QUOTE
    Failed Yahoo Authentication

The Yahoo server has requested the use of an unrecognized authentication method. This version
of Gaim will likely not be able to successfully sign on to Yahoo. Check http://gaim.sourceforge.net/ for updates.
    END QUOTE

Power problems don’t cause login authentication
protocols to change. A server or network device without power simply doesn’t respond to queries. It doesn’t start asking different questions. Yahoo is busted (in several ways).

P.S. I’m not using NAT and don’t have a firewall since I run an OS that can cope. Got any other excuses?

    Comment by VNuckolls — December 5, 2008 #

  62. To VNuckolls,
I agree entirely. Who ever the culprit is should be dealt with harshly !!!!!!!
I was thinking…hmm maybe we could get them to recite Vista source codes backwards, with a dash of sleep deprivation thrown in for good measure, and if that isnt enough, we should make them use Vista. That should put them over the edge for good. Or is that just being far too mean ?

  70. None of you are paying to use Yahoo Messenger. None of you have any right to tell Yahoo to “turn it on now” or complain about anything not working. It is their servers and they are running it for free for all of you to use. If they go down for a day or two, or even a week, it doesn’t matter. They are not losing any money and neither are you. You all need to stop bitching and let them do whatever they want to do.
If they want to do protocol changes and restrict people from using Yahoo Messenger then so be it, it’s their software. Yes, I use Linux as well and I know the frustrations as well as anybody else of it not working but we’re all going to have to live with it. If you don’t like it, move on to another service.
Better yet, why don’t you pay for a service that you can chat on, so you actually have a valid reason to complain.

    Have a nice day.

Is there any time yet for regaining this feature? Btw, I am using yahoo 9.0 and the sms feature don’t work. It isn’t my phone as the MSN messenger sms does work.

  74. hum Geoff, I beg to differ, some of us do pay for Yahoo, it’s called being in the stock market, No I don’t own any stock in Yahoo at this moment, nor I will if they get bought out. It affects them like any other business when something is down, ad’s that is how they make the money off of us, if you can’t have a system running right, then they will loose money by us leaving Yahoo and the customer who does pay for that ad on Yahoo, they loose in two ways.

Now for the ones who are complaining, I can certainly understand your situation, it’s very hard when something like this does not work and we would like to communicate to love ones, friends, or just in general.

I work in retail, no I am not saying that I know what the problem is, at the same time it’s like when a product is out and no more on the shelf, the ones who ask if we have anymore in the back, most of time, most retail stores that I go to don’t really have a back room of storage.

What I am getting at is hang in there, I wish I knew the whole story why it’s down, it will come in a day or two I am sure being leaked out, we all know how companies have a employee that can’t keep the mouth shut, and also they need to tell the investors what happen and explain the situation and how to prevent it ever happening again.

Give Yahoo sometime and space, programing is not easy and it maybe that they need to move the servers to a new location, we really don’t know.

It’s tough I understand. I use Ubuntu and Pidgin and Kopete is the only way to really use Yahoo.

Again hang in there and relax

ALOT OF PEOPLE INCLUDED MYSELF DIDNT LIKE THAT AND VOICED OUR OPINION ON THAT AND YALL CHANGED IT BACK

Yahoo Messenger has nothing to do with the Yahoo Stocks. Their stocks are not affected by whether or not Billy can PM his e-friends via messenger or Yahoo Chat. You can still access the stocks via their website and nothing is being impacted by a free service.

  81. I not talking about stocks Yahoo Finace Geoff, think right now Yahoo is bleeding with this problem, we the customer is leaving, ad revenue, hello, you get a ad on Yahoo Messenger I will say for example Papa John’s pizza, you click on it right? Money for Papa John’s and money for Yahoo you click on the ad.

We are customers, the ad’s are customer of Yahoo, this hurting them.

  83. i thought the maintenance is over now…. why cant i use my yahoo messenger?????????????????????????????

    Comment by lovelyn — December 5, 2008 #

  84. I like that common misconseption of none of you are paying yahoo.. ha ha ha ha. all i can say is alot of people pay for yahoo service be them sbc users or web clients etc. Yes messenger is a free portion of yahoo messenger (payed for by the paying customers) ithout the paying customers there would be no yahoo. It would still just be geocities with a crappy one room per state java chat.

  85. Stop crying people, yahoo messenger is no longer down!!!! Yay!!!!

  86. If you read their status update folks you would have realized that the problem was not with yahoo but one of their 3rd party colo’s that they simply had no control over.

If you are just a standard YIM user, you probobly don’t care about what I am about to say. The internet is not perfect or 100%. any online business that guarantees 100% uptime is simply out to lunch. We have to remain flexible in situations such as this. Don’t be unrealistic in your expectations.

So don’t blame the hand that feeds you (and in many cases for free) because it may just come back to haunt you later on.

I want to commend Yahoo for communicating the issue as soon as they became aware of it. Also, I was very impressed with the short amount of time it took for Yahoo to find where the problem was, clearly communicate the issue, as well and the very speedy resolution time.

All you folks that were questioning the truth or validity of their statements are just outright rude and your statements were unwarranted.

Thats my input in the matter. Thanks again Yahoo for everything you do!

  88. Alex. Be patient. with the internet and it’s many segments, sometimes it takes a while for servers to update with new information.

The maintenance is complete, so you should be back in biz shortly.

Oh ya, and close out yahoo completely and then launch it again. You may get the result you’re looking for then.

    All the best.

  100. Yeah, you are not the only one Alex, I dont know if i is a virus, or if Yahoo is working on an issue again, but there is a problem and nobody seems to have answers. But one thing I do know, and that is the problem is not happening to all, but it is happening to many.

  101. Are we going to be up and running today by any chance? Or at least get an update on what is going on and what to expect? My messenger is no longer installed in my computer and I can’t upgrade to the new 9.0 version.
