Sync your Messenger & Twitter updates
November 7, 2008 on 11:45 am | In 9.0 version, Features | 8 Comments
If you’re a Twitter user, you’ll find this plug-in really useful as it syncs the status messages you create in Messenger with the updates you make in Twitter.
Created by the New Zealand-based development team at WackyB, the Twitter Sync
plug-in allows you to change your status in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 and also have it update on your Twitter account. The same is true when you use Twitter to make an update; the plug-in will take what you wrote in Twitter and make it your Yahoo! Messenger status.
The plug-in also keeps you informed about what your Twitter friends are up to. You’ll receive notifications in Messenger every time a Twitter friend changes their status. So instead of having to visit Twitter or run a separate application to get updates, you can do it all right in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.
The control panel in the plug-in offers many handy features. You can set how often you want Messenger to check for updates from your Twitter friends, and you can control what kinds of Messenger status messages get pushed to your Twitter friends. You can also decide how you get alerted to new tweets – with sounds, popups or nothing at all. And if your friends are getting too tweety, the plug-in lets you pause updates from the main window. You can then use the Update Now link to manually pull in updates.

If you’re using Twitter and want to get updates about Yahoo! Messenger, go to our Twitter page to begin following our tweets and sending us yours.

That’s a nice feature, though I don’t use Twitter.

It’s a shame that Yahoo decided to abruptly end it’s plugin program for external developers
We created this plugin more than a year ago (published date shows as: Thu, 06 September 2007) when Twitter was in it’s early days. There have been many improvements to Twitter since then but unfortunately we are unable to update our plugin to reflect this. We have had many requests (more so recently) to make modifications to the plugin but the only way to incorporate changes would be to release as a test plugin (a feature designed to be used only for development). It would have been great if they could have included a means for running local plugins before terminating the plugin system. On the developer site (http://developer.yahoo.com/messenger) it still reads — “ATTENTION: Submission of new Messenger plugins has been temporarily disabled while we make some changes. You cannot submit Messenger plugins to gallery.yahoo.com during this time. Thanks for your patience.” — This message has been for well over a year. Having invested our time and resources into learning the plugin framework and designing new plugin ideas, to have the submission process removed without notice was pretty much the nail in the coffin for us. We do hope to release a new version of TwitSync (obviously as a test plugin) on our site with some improvements when we find some time.
