Chat rooms down for maintenance @ 3pm PT
November 6, 2008 on 3:20 pm | In News | 27 Comments
Starting at approximately 3pm Pacific time today, the Yahoo! Messenger chat rooms will be unavailable due to some maintenance we are performing. We expect the chat rooms to become available again around 4pm PT. We’ll update this post once the chat rooms are back online.
Thanks for your patience,
Sarah Bacon
Product Manager
This maintenance is complete as of 11/6/08 @4:30pm PT. We recommend signing out of Messenegr, closing the application, and then signing back in. Thanks

Just curious, will all the currently broken rooms get fixed with this maintenance?
Comment by Mike — November 6, 2008 #
Will the maintenance help at all with keeping all of the bots out of the rooms so that they’re more enjoyable?
Comment by GG — November 6, 2008 #
fix voice laggers fix porn bots fix booting and also fix the problem where people have hacked so they can hold the mic more for than the usual 20 seconds YAHOO this is why so many people use 3rd party chat clients like Yazak and YahElite!

Have you ever thought about simply implementing a broadcast function and telling chatters this outage is about to happen? I was happily chatting along and bam! Started getting chat errors. No notice. No warning. Is this software really so primitive?

wow…thanks for the heads up! It’s nice to know ahead of times when maintenance outage will occurr. Please continue these outage communtions!!!
Comment by dilbert36m — November 6, 2008 #
yes i agree with bob…an outage broadcast on yahoo insider..an IM, or msg inside chatrooms announcing the outages in advance would be an excellent addition and a crowd pleaser.
Comment by dilbert36m — November 6, 2008 #
dilbert, was that sarcasm?
Do you think people are checking this blog every 12 hours to see when there’s going to be a disruption or are you just kidding?
It’s easy enough to broadcast warnings (and informative messages) to chatters from a central location in-line with the chat so at least a rumor of it will be around.
Simple minded software or simple minded management?

well so what is the benefits of this updates ?
Comment by ahmed — November 6, 2008 #
Sorry about that Dilbert, maybe I was too quick off the mark. Sounds like you agree with me on a Yahoo broadcast warning about known downtimes.
It’s clear to me that Yahoo Chat has little or no communications with the users. This blog was difficult to find. And I’m not suggesting daily messages from Yahoo as that would be too intrusive (and end up being used as an advertising medium, if I know my giant corporations well).

What do you expect from YahSNOT ??? the head of it should star in the next dumb & dumber movie but then again they’d need some one who knows what the heck there doing !!!

I have been using Yahoo Messenger for quite some time now…2001 or so…in that time it has NEVER worked very well. I see the EXACT same requests and many times these requests come from the same people that write the third party clients and along with those requests they will include specific things to do in tech terms that will not only fix the problem but stop the client that they wrote…Hows that for irony.
I am still convinced that Yahoo makes money on the bots. So I would not expect them to go anywhere anytime soon.
oh…and one last thing….Sarah said 4pm PT….I wojuld not expect the chat servers to be operational anytime before 2am PT (5am ET)
Comment by Kip — November 6, 2008 #
You’d think they would have learned their lesson about springing things on users after the profiles fiasco…
And I agree, the blog is not the easiest thing to get to if you want to figure out what is going on with Yahoo!, and they aren’t the best at informing the users about all the “upgrades” being performed.
Comment by MissyGurl — November 6, 2008 #
And why, oh why, did they pick prime usage time to enact this upgrade???
Comment by MissyGurl — November 6, 2008 #
for those who think there was no warning, i received an email stating they would be doing maintenence today nov 6th about a month ago
Comment by frank — November 6, 2008 #
Sarah Bacon…..need I say more?
I am gonna get banned again
Comment by Kip — November 6, 2008 #
Maybe you should forward that e-mail to all the other chat users, Frank, because obviously we didn’t get it. Perhaps you could do a better job of keeping the community informed than Yahoo! does.
Comment by MissyGurl — November 6, 2008 #
I don’t think Yahoo! even really cares about its users or they would have listened to them a long time ago.
Comment by justin — November 6, 2008 #
The full roomlist has been working again for the past 10 minutes now. (4:24 PM PT)
Comment by Tom — November 6, 2008 #
I am still getting communication errors.
Comment by justin — November 6, 2008 #
I used to use many of Yahoo!’s services…I had to stop….customer service….but since we are led to believe Yahoo! does not make money from their chat room’s they think they can provide a inferior product.
Trust me…Yahoo! does not pay Sarah’s salary out of the goodness of their cooperate heart!
Comment by Kip — November 6, 2008 #
Frank…email from yahoo eh oh really? I’m call bull bologna on that one
Considering they (Yahoo) could’ve posted about the “maintenance” on this blog ohhhhh whenever they knew they were going to do said “maintenance.” Most of us that aren’t noobs…know that Yahoo will never do away with the bots HELLO how do you figure Yahoo is free
and “maintenance” is always a word they use when they really mean to say…”we are now going to screw up your chat experience for the next month while we attempt to pull our heads out of our butts because we have nothing better to do.”
Comment by Bri — November 6, 2008 #
Doesn’t amuse me..
Comment by Kai — November 6, 2008 #

Frank –
What is so difficult to understand?
Chatters are in chat. Yahoo can send messages to chatters via a very simple software mod.
Yahoo deliberately refuses to do so either because their programmers are dolts (which I don’t believe), or because the the programming staff has proposed such a thing, and in “meetings”, management refuses to spend the money.
How much money are we talking about?
Chickenfeed.
Get Yahoo to send us broadcasts warnings that chat is going off-line. I’ll suggest a format:
Yahoo Chat: Yahoo chat will be going off line in 1 hour for scheduled maintenence. We will will be back at XPM PST. Thanks.
Yahoo Chat: Yahoo chat will be going off line in 30 minutes for scheduled maintenence. We will will be back at XPM PST. Thanks.
Yahoo Chat: Yahoo chat will be going off line in 15 minutes for scheduled maintenence. We will will be back at XPM PST. Thanks.
Yahoo Chat: Yahoo chat will be going off line in 5 minutes for scheduled maintenence. We will will be back at XPM PST. Thanks.

Looks like the rooms are back, but you need to restart your Yahoo to see them.

BRI……That was perfect!
