News on our voice services

April 29, 2008 on 9:51 am | In Voice | 46 Comments

As you may have seen in the news today, Yahoo! Messenger is partnering with Jajah to power the management of our premium voice (Phone Out and Phone In) services.

Currently, we manage our own end to end services that enable users to call from Yahoo! Messenger to regular or mobile phones around the world for as low as 1¢ a minute. Upon integration, Jajah will power these services and we will leverage their VoIP network for delivering Phone Out and In services.

Rest assured that our voice services will remain the same and as a user, you will not notice any change. We are committed to achieving the highest possible call quality and ease of use. This change does not affect our free PC to PC calls; these will continue to be handled by Yahoo! Messenger (and still be free!).

We’ll keep you posted here on the blog about any additional voice news. For more information on Yahoo! Messenger’s premium voice services, please visit http://voice.yahoo.com.

  4. Ryan you have a good point, I never saw it that way. But I have to disagree with Microsoft buying Yahoo. That’d just make MS stronger and richer. $44.6 Billion is a great investment because in a few years they will double or triple their profits from Yahoo. Plus Windows Live Messenger is crappier than Yahoo Messenger. The emoticons are bad.

But right now I completely hate the 9.0 version. I prefer the 8.0 on my XP and Vista but hopefully I’ll stick to the Vista version of Yahoo Messenger once it’s out of Beta for my Vista machine.

Personal note, keep up the great job on Yahoo Messenger for Vista. As for Yahoo Messenger 9.0, make it more user friendly. It needs the 8.0 feel with the 9.0 look.

  12. Yahoo! Voice Out doesn’t work for international long distance it seems. They claim it does, but until they get their stuff sorted out, I want my money back! My network and ISP are working great…this wouldn’t be the first problem I’ve had with YM in the past two years.

  13. Just signed up for Yahoo messenger solely to get Yahoo voice out. Keeps asking me to buy $10. which I’ve already done. Can’t make any calls: “The Yahoo! Voice service could not make the call right now. Please try again a bit later.” Passed the microphone and speaker tests, however.

    This sucks.

  17. I had not had to contact Yahoo! about my voice service before Jajah, but now that I have had to, its a painful experience. First you queue for typically 30-60 minutes waiting for a chat agent. Then half the time the system bombs out and tells you no agents are available. Then when you get someone, they are not able to resolve the issue. To give you an idea, Yahoo! “de-activated” my voice out service (with $6 still on my account) claiming some security reason, and refuse to re-activate even after I answered dozens of questions about credit card numbers, last payment date etc… Two weeks later, after multiple chat sessions, messages etc, still no movement. My advice is, use Skype – might cost a cent more but you’ll avoid a ton of hassle.

  18. I can’t make PC to PC call in YM 9.0. It worked once then it stopped. Now when I click the call button I get “connectig to voicemail..” right away. No ringing sound at all. I used the hardware setup function and everything (mic/speakers) checked out OK. Please help. I email YM service and told me to run the audio hardware setup which I did. Since then no emails back from them. A bit disapointed with the service.

  26. I’m irritated as heck about this – try this out for size. Looks like Yahoo has prohibited more than one call per account per login – SO – If you need to make multiple calls. Log on, call then log off and quit messenger. Then log on again and you should be able to make another call. Let me know how this works. I know it’s not a great solution, but at least it lets us get our money’s worth.

  28. @a_person,

Here’s how to disable the auto-charge setting on your Yahoo! Voice account:

(1). Go to http://voice.yahoo.com and Sign In

(2). Click on the My Services tab

(3). Under the “Auto Recharge “ text, select the “Off” radio button. This will disable Auto Recharge.

  31. Yahoo voice started off excellent and now people I call say my voice sounds choppy, which I confirmed by calling a cell phone and talking to myself. Also, I get this message 9 out of 10 times “We’re very sorry. The Yahoo! Voice service could not make this call right now. Please try again a little bit later.” which is EXTREMELY frustrating. Any chance this is going to be fixed soon?

To change your billing information, please:

Go to: billing.yahoo.com. You’ll be asked to sign-in again to confirm your identity for this password-protected page. When it opens, click Update in the “Payment Method” column beneath the card number you’d like to change.

When you’re done updating information, click Continue to save your changes.

Note: Any changes you make to your credit card information will automatically be applied to all your future payments for all your Yahoo! Premium Services.

If you’re still having problems, please contact customer care for more assistance.

  38. am not able to make pc to pc call to a friend but can do so to others.whenever she comes online the symbol of phone disappears.when she goes offline it reappears.when am clickig call pc under action when she is online it says here that the version of yahoo messenger she is using does not support this featuer.does that mean she is using older version? if yes then why am i able to make the call when she is offline? please help..

    Comment by JJ — July 30, 2009 #

  39. @JJ – It sounds like your friend is coming online with a version that does not support voice calls. So if she is using Yahoo! Messenger in Mail for example or Yahoo! Messenger for the Web, you would not be able to call her when she’s online. When she’s offline, you’re able to then call and leave her a voicemail. Hope that helps,
