Yahoo! Messenger for Vista: Preview Release Available!
December 5, 2007 on 9:00 pm | In Vista version | 170 Comments
It’s here! It’s really here! We’re thrilled to bring you the preview version of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista, the first Yahoo! Messenger built from the ground up for the Windows Vista operating system. This is your chance to try it out and give us your feedback to help make the next version even better.
This is a preview version only (pre-beta) so not everything is in here that you might be used to seeing in other versions of Yahoo! Messenger. Here’s a list of the features included today:
- Entirely new interface that harnesses the power of WPF, the graphics subsystem in Windows Vista
- Organize your conversations into tabs, or drag and drop a tab out to create a new window
- Keep up with your favorite contacts by dragging them into the Windows Sidebar gadget
- Send enhanced emoticons that have some extra oomph
- Change the color of your IM windows with a built-in skin chooser. Go crazy with a different skin for every IM window!
- Adjust the display size of your contacts with a handy slider
- Arrange your contact list into multiple columns just by resizing your window
- Send instant messages to your Yahoo! and Windows Live Messenger contacts
- Send files to friends as large as 2 GB
- Find contacts quickly with the contact search bar. Type in a few letters of the contact’s name or ID and they’ll come up in filtered results.
- As-you-type spell checker that’s smart enough to know that “LOL” is not something to correct
- A preferences menu you can access by right-clicking anywhere at the top of the main Messenger window
Check out the screencast to see Yahoo! Messenger for Vista Preview up close (alternate hi quality version):
If you are already running Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 or 9.0 on your Vista PC, you can continue to use it. Messenger for Vista will be installed to a different directory so you can launch one version or the other depending on what you need. Note that Yahoo! Messenger for Vista can only be installed on a Windows Vista operating system.
Many familiar features are not in this preview: voice, webcam, chat rooms, text messaging to mobile phones (SMS), IMVironments, Audibles, plug-ins, photo sharing (though you can send photos via file transfer) and conferencing. We’ll be working on many of these features and 64-bit Vista support for our next releases [64-bit available as of 12/7].
We know it’s been a long wait for Yahoo! Messenger for Vista and we can’t thank you enough for your patience. We really want your feedback on this preview version, so please use our feedback form to let us know what you like, what you don’t like, and which features you’d like to see next.

Senior Product Manager, Yahoo! Messenger for Vista
P.S. – Congrats to the Messenger for Vista team on the launch! Here are some photos from our launch event tonight (thanks Jeremy!).

Comment by Ron B. — December 5, 2007 #
I’m not able to download the preview right at the moment, so if anyone knows, could they possibly give me a heads up on whether or not the “as-you-type spell checker” will be a feature than can be turned off as desired?
I can already see myself tearing my hair out if I’m constantly being corrected on words like colour/color, realise/realize, etc., and have no way of telling it to shut its damn trap.
Not to mention the fact that I doubt it’d be a total catch-all for internet acronyms. Will it know not to correct GTFO or DIAF or heck, MMORPG?
Yeah, obviously I’m not thinking too much of the spell checker idea. I hate the things no matter what application it’s a part of.
If anyone can give me some good news regarding this, I’d appreciate it.

Is this is a dream? Please, somebody wake me up! We “only” waited 332 days this. Well not quite for this. I’m not sure what to say. Let me try to be nice and sum it up by saying: It looks like a hot fashion model that has IQ of 81. I certainly appreciate it that is finally out, BUT even though I understand it’s a pre-beta, the real test is limited because of the features or their lack of. It looks smooth, pretty and inviting. Not so much revolutionary but definitely innovating. I love the tabs option, probably one of the best ideas. New smileys are also cool. What I don’t like are new preferences. You can’t change them much anyway. Once the audio, video etc are released there’ll be much more to talk about. Yahoo team celebrated, they might of worked hard but I would be just a little bit embarrassed if I dragged people’s hope for the longest time. I just hope we wont have to wait another 12 months for the new beta.

I have to say more complaining already? Gosh at least they gave us a preview that we can use. But I wonder if I can do IM with it cause no one I know is online

I downloaded the vista messenger ,but instead of a working messenger i have BIG BLACK SQUARE appearing on my desktop !!Very dissapointing
Comment by maersk — December 6, 2007 #
awesome… I knew this was coming when they stopped signups.
First impressions: fantastic, at last a version of Messenger that works on my Vista! No avatars showing up though, I think it’s because I’m running the latest Flash (which was released from Beta the other day, and is now the main Flash download on Adobe’s site: v9 of Messenger doesn’t show avatars either. No, it’s not because my contacts don’t have avatars lol)
I don’t care that it doesn’t have “voice, webcam, chat rooms, SMS, IMVironments, Audibles, plug-ins, and conferencing.” I never used that stuff anyway. But a working client? I’ve been waiting a year! Thanks so much to the Vista team.

You gave us a Happy & Sad news on same day! One you unveiled Vista version which we have been anticipating so long and second, you should have taken more care before Beta version slipped. May be I am wrong.. I didn’t find anything exciting other than GUI part.
Hope the final version is more exciting and feature rich! Come people…! I know you can rock.. v8.0 is much better!
Will be posting my reviews soon.. but surely not impressed and not worth the wait!
Cheers!

My question is, why aren’t chat rooms included in this preview of Vista Messenger? Are they going to be included, or are they “bye bye”.
To be honest, for a near year’s work, there really isn’t much in the preferences department. Can’t even set your default font and whatnot. I’ll take a look in the registry and see what I can do. It’s a step in the right direction, it just needs more options and chat rooms.
Also, a window snapping feature would be handy. I’ll be recommending this to the feedback form, of course.

Come on man … 1 damn year for this??? This is wack … it is slower than any other messenger and can’t do anything …. why bother tell us about it… i am disapointed … yahoo disapointed this time … bad
Comment by Smochina — December 6, 2007 #
At first it would not let me dl the new messenger. I had to completely unistall all yahoo products. Then it let me.
I realize this is the pre-view. I was wondering if the full release will have the mail feature on it?
So far I like what I see, except I miss my mail feature. LOL.
Comment by Whiskey — December 6, 2007 #
Wow cant belive it it is out but why is there missin still so much like video etc cant belive it that the Team needed so much time for bring that … out. And why just a Pre-Beta do we need to wait now again such a long time till its the final or new Beta? Whats goin on with Yahoo think they like to loose Users for their Messanger.
Comment by Longinus — December 6, 2007 #
Very disappointed. The version in the movie you released in February is better that this one. Even the GUI was better in that version. I kind of understand that this is only a pre-beta but come on people I can’t even select a personal status. The emoticons is the only feature well done but you have forgotten about the bee emoticon.
Hope the next version will be better! \m/

OMG! The Yahoo team is celebrating and posting pictures for this garbage??? They should go and hide into the hole and never come out from there. Shame on you and your project managers! What we have here is the messenger we had back in 1998 but a little worse. The preview video is basically resizing the window and changing colors, ‘wow’ I am so impressed. NOT. This messenger is Vaporware, we knew that from the beginning and it’s very clear now. Someone said that we complain too much. I don’t think people would complain if they get at least a third of what they were promised. Do you?

I’ll create a whole list of suggestions and ideas to post a little later here and in the feedback form for Vista Messenger.
In the meantime, is there another Yahoo! Messenger v9.0 beta coming soon?
Perhaps with some reported and infamous bugs fixed?
Comment by Venom — December 6, 2007 #
Please hurry up with getting chat on!!
Comment by speedybird — December 6, 2007 #
Ok, here’s some suggestions and feedback so far…
Buddy List Window:
1) Custom color schemes. It’s possible to add a custom option to use any color chosen by the user.
2) Yahoo! Mail and Yahoo! 360/Mash buttons in the top toolbar.
3) Dockable/snappable window to the edge of the screen.
4) Float over popup when hovering over people’s IDs.
5) Chat rooms. Need to add back chat rooms, and add back a quick button for them.
6) Frameless avatar/display picture area option in addition to the current framed one (like in the old screenshots).
7) Inability to drag the buddy list by clicking inside the contact list, and dragging.
6) Remember the placement and style of the sign in window.
PM Window:
1) Resizable text input area, with the ability to remember the text input area size for all PM windows.
2) PM windows remember sizes (resize one window, all future windows will be as big).
3) v8.x and below style of display pictures in the PM windows.
4) Option to choose your message font style, and for Vista Messenger to remember it.
General:
1) Add a menu bar to the top to replace the drop down menu (for those whom like the older Messengers)
2) Add all current features in Yahoo! Messenger v9.0 and v8.1 into Vista Messenger. It totally needs them.
3) Redo the preferences window, it looks like basic.
Overall Vista Messenger is impressive, but it needs to catch up with Yahoo! Messenger v8.1 and v9.0 to become the dominate version. =P
Comment by Venom — December 6, 2007 #
I’ve very dissapointed. With only one active chat, my cpu usage spikes up to 20% just typing. Receiving an emoticon spikes it up to 17%. Opening the emoticon lists spikes it up to 53% !!!
My computer is an AMD Athlon 64 x2 6400+ 3.2 ghz, 2 gb RAM running on windows vista ultimate.
Do something about it.
Comment by Andrei N. — December 6, 2007 #
You people really need to relax. This is free software and it has been built from the ground up. Give these guys a break. It is going to take time to get all the functionality implemented in this versio, which is running on very different code from previous versions. If you paid for this, I think you could complain, but you didn’t, so stop.
Thank you Yahoo!! I am sure the final product will be great.
Comment by Wyvex — December 6, 2007 #
Chalk up another disappointed, otherwise fan. All this Vista hype and then omission of x64. Ouch.
Comment by Ogre — December 6, 2007 #
I agree Wyvex that what I was saying earlier only in a diffrent way.
Just be glad its here and we can play with it and make it better.
Comment by Daniel — December 6, 2007 #
Well, it’s been a long wait, but I think the product is still not fully cooked. Yes, it takes advantage of more of the Vista features than any other messenger out there (as another commenter said so well “it’s purdy”), but there are so many key features still missing. It’s one big step forward, but three steps back.
I know you’re working on adding in additional features, but I sure hope we don’t have to wait another year for them!

I think the “sidebar gadget not working” issue is because our computers are not set to en-US (I’ve peeked inside the gadget, and there are two en-US folders). If I look inside all my other gadgets, they have en-GB folders. So I think it’s a language issue.

Myself ive been running 64 bit for two years now and im sure its been out longer than that… i really wanted to try the new vista messenger but guess its back to myspace messenger…
bye bye losers
Comment by Dave — December 6, 2007 #
Okay. I’ve got it. Like so many others, I was disappointed by the lack of x64 support, but it’s okay. I was able to install it on a second computer with 32-bit Vista.
I’m glad to see this thing finally exists, honestly. I was starting to believe some of the naysayers.
Well, first things first. Look and feel, fit and finish aren’t so great. Oh well, I watched Whistler and Longhorn evolve into XP and Vista, so I can excuse the mess. Going forward in development, I’d like to see a lot more customization in the colors department. Gimme a color mixer!
As far as usability, first and foremost… settings! I love the flyout option panels. When they start filling up with settings, then they’ll be great. Stealth settings are MIA, but I can live.
A thought about the contact detail level. How about at the larger settings, a series of controls are added to each contact’s tile? A button for IM, one for Voice, and a drop-down for stealth settings?
I think that would rock.

Some of the comments here are from real whiny babies.. i mean, come on, you didn’t even PAY for this.. they came out with YM 9, you complained.. you wanted vista.. well here it is, you still complain…
it was many of the people here who were rushing Yahoo! to come up with a beta or a preview, and now that the team, out of so much pressure from many of you, have come up with a very simplistic preview, you tell them it’s worthless.. way to go for appreciation?
they came out with a preview version to ask for feedback and not negative comments from you. if you didn’t pay for it, just shut up and thank the team behind this messenger.
it’s a preview, people. LIGHTEN UP and PROVIDE FEEDBACK.
Thanks for the effort Yahoo! we (the non-whiners) really really appreciate it! We hope to see an optimized, more functional end product!

Sixty … Four … Bit … Version … PLEASE!
Comment by Burhan — December 7, 2007 #
hmmm.. to everyone having issues, please be aware (and this hasn’t been commented on by Yahoo) that the version we downloaded yesterday was one of the early prototypes, NOT the version we saw in the video. (If you look inside the folder, there is a readme dated February). I don’t know why the Vista team released this early version, probably to shut us all up!
Erik Burke says on his blog that a 64 bit version is coming, so don’t panic. Probably be here the same time as the full 32 bit one I guess.
If you can’t get the preview working, try updating your computers via Microsoft Update, and download dotnet 3.5. The Messenger client is bleeding edge stuff, not designed for legacy use (you can use YM8 or 9).
I don’t work for Yahoo, I wish THEY would tell us this stuff….

Comment by Andy — December 7, 2007 #
to those of you who’ve been saying it’s a BETA.. nobody on earth said it’s a beta.. jeez!!! it’s a PREVIEW VERSION for those desperate people who’ve been rushing Yahoo! for something.. well, here it is now so you can PREVIEW it… it’s not a BETA version.. does everyone understand that?
i’m not even trying to side with Yahoo, but it’s just that they are insulted very much and it’s just unfair.. i mean if this was the beta launch, and it’s this feature-less, I would be disappointed too.
it’s kind of strange why there are so many people having trouble with YM (even the 8.1 version) on vista.. it works like magic on my two PCs… there has to be some sort of software combination that’s lethal to YM. there should be a YM conference so people can talk about what apps they’ve installed on their PCs and see why YM doesn’t work for them. lol.

Does anyone have an issue with IE7.0 closing down when you try to close it after installing the YM for Vista? – If not, it might be an error on my end – THANKS! =0)
-Greg
P.s. I LOVE THE NEW MESSENGER – I am glad that Yahoo! came out with the preview version. It looks neat and works neat. I’m really looking forward to all the features coming back, but I an sending in that feedback to Yahoo! – THANKS AGAIN!! =0)
Comment by Greg — December 7, 2007 #
People bitch because after almost *one year*, Yahoo! released only a preview version of the messenger.
I’ll ask again: How come the CES version had all the features in it?
Anyway, Y!M Vista works like a charm on my PC and it’s definately a better experience than with Y!M 9.

if you want to execute it on Windows XP install .Net Framework 3.0 its running smooth on here at the moment. However YIM for Vista does not support .Net Framework 2.0 which is why you always get errors when installing it because it requires .Net Framework 3.0 and you can obtain a copy of this from Windows Update or MSDN
Comment by vb_packets — December 7, 2007 #
This preview runs on XP as well, all you have to do is install .NET 3.0. The main difference between Vista and Xp regarding this issue is that Vista uses hardware rendering for WPF applications, while XP tends to do it software (and by software I mean emulating it). Of course the video drivers you use and the directx version you have installed on your PC is very important. If your video card doesn’t support Directx 9.0c then there’s no chance for hardware rendering on Xp…
This being said, take into account that this is only a preview… I’m not sure if the official release will be running on Xp…
For Linux users, there’s only one thing to do… Increase the number of users for this platform.. Yahoo won’t develop anything to increase their market share by 1%… And this also applies for all the other developers.. Let’s increase our numbers and then we’ll have an updated version for Linux.

I just managed to deal with gadget problem!
You have to turn on the UAC (user account control – control panel – users) in vista and the sidebar gadget will work just fine!

Wow this is so cool. WHAT A WASTED OF DOWNLOADING TIME. I have to say this don’t blame Yahoo. BLAME MICROSOFT WINDOWS VISTA FOR GIVING US A CRAPPY PROGRAM.. IT IS LIKE THE CHRISTMAS CAROL WE USED TO SING IN THE NAVY. ABOUT A DITTY BAG THAT WOULND’T HOLD CHIT. I GUESS DON’T SHOOT THE MESSENGER. YAHOO IS AT LEAST TRYING TO MAKE A SILK PURS OUT OF A PIGS EAR.(VISTA)

Dear Yahoo Messenger Vista Team,
Wow, I am impressed, I love this messenger and the clean UI please keep it that way. Love the sidebar gadget.
Please gives us an auto reply feature, Messenger has never had that, its about time to get it.
Another suggestion. You guys mention it has th ability to shrink the icons on the main windown for work mode, but yet, one can still see the picture of the person he is speaking iwth in the chat window is there a way to turn that off like on other messengers.
I mean i don’t wanna be forced to see bad avatar pics when i used to be able to disable them.
Comment by CC — December 11, 2007 #
Yahoo team, I just read comments about this not working on 64 bit vista.
Well, my bf, installed it on his 64 bit Vista Ultimate O.S. And it runs great he loves it he has only encounted one minor problem He cannot drag and drop files to send them. He gets “file not found” error. However, I am running Vista Ultimate as well and I am able to drag and drop files, but I am running the 32 bit version.
He did say however, that if he presses the send button he is able to send files, just fine just not drag and drop them.
Thought I let you know. I was running Vista Home, and things like webcam did not work, but all was solved with Vista Ultimate. So maybe these bugs are due to a lower version of vista.
Comment by CC — December 11, 2007 #
This is the biggest let down for 2007… The preview back in January (the video) looked great, but this… meh…
please give us back the streamlined appearance, the all graphite interface (without that glass border), Windows Vista style Close/Max/Min button
the tilted user picture is great, the pop up emoticon is also nice, the color selection animation is also nice
it would be nice if you implement the animation featured in yahoo search sidebar widget and the overall GUI for the login window or splash screen
Comment by Chriswan — December 11, 2007 #
I agree with Chriswan about the let down. The version in the video looked far superior to this pre release. The UI on this is not to good compared. Hope everything gets back on track for this. At least release something with call and cam. I think that was the biggest dissapointment.
Comment by AE — December 11, 2007 #
very dissapointing…besides the fancy look, there’s nothing i don’t see much inovations…the performance of it totally sucks…they need to do smth about it’s performance, or else, it won’t get much success

DID YOU KNOW WHEN YOU DOWNLOAD A NEW MESSENGER THAT COMES OUT IN A BETA TESTING IS GOING TO HAVE BUGS IN IT AND GLITCHES THATS WHY I DONT DOWNLOAD ANY BETA TESTING VERSONS OF YAHOO JUST LIKE THE EAMIL BETA AND MY YAHOO BETA THEY LOOK GOOD AND NICE BUT DON’T NEED THE BUGS AND GLITCHES THEY IS NOT GOOD FOR MY PC THAT WHY I WAIT INTELL THEY COME OUT WITH A FULL NICE FRESH NEW BUILD OUT OF BETA I THINK YAHOO SHOULD TEST THIER BUILDS AND VERSONS BEFORE LETTING EVERYONE ELS TEST DRIVEING IT.
Comment by PASTOR REX — December 11, 2007 #
To Yahoo Messenger team: Why don’t you guys email Bill Gate and ask for the code to remove that glassy border so that it looks like in the first preview and make the maximize/minimize/close buttons on the skin glow when mouse-over?
Or maybe it’s too hard to incorporate those glowing buttons into the skin? it seems that the Windows Live Messenger team can not figure it out, too. XD
Comment by BTA5454 — December 12, 2007 #
Interesting thing.
My laptop (HP Verve, Centrino Dual Core, 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium) can’t run Yahoo Messenger for Vista.
My media server (Dell Inspiron, Core 2 Duo, 2GB RAM, Vista Home Premium) can.
Both computers are virtually identical, except that my media server’s processor is over 2GHz while my laptop is 1.5GHz. Media server is half a TB hard drive, laptop is just over 200GB. Other than that they’re basically the same. Just can’t understand it.
Comment by ReVeLaTeD — December 12, 2007 #
@pastor rex: so, we user can give them feedback, changes based on user feedbacks are more easily implemented while a program is still in preview releases
@BTA5454: I think they already know the codes, if not, how did they make the video, if there’s no running prototype.
I think it’s just some legal problems that hopefuly can be solved, because I seriously prefer the original look
@YM Team: program start-up time need a lot of improvements
Comment by Chriswan — December 13, 2007 #
Not bad for an “alpha,” but it still doesn’t play well with Stardock’s Window Blinds. Then again, those apps that don’t play within the bounds of Window’s skins and instead roll their own don’t play well with Window Blinds, either.

Comment by Rooster — December 15, 2007 #
@ Y! team: Besides restoring the interface to the original look, there’s one more option that we’d like to be added. That’s the ability to paste an optional picture to a contact’s avatar. Many of my female friends don’t set up an avatar, and it’s so ridiculous viewing the generic avatar as a male!
Oh and somehow the main windows is not transparent, and the color choice is so limited.
I wonder that will we have to wait another full year for the final version?
Comment by BTA5454 — December 15, 2007 #
YAHOO
i was really excited to experience this app when i saw in the first video preview last january (the first video preview), it is very excellent. i was waiting for it since last year.
i was very dissapointed when i saw it. I can’t see the feautures i love like the photosharing, voice calling, some great UI’s. I hope you go back to that version and release it, and improve it
.i hope you’ll release it very SOON, a month or two?!. i don’t like too wait for about a year AGAIN. please and thank you.
by the way, thnx for you effort for releasing that preview version.

You guys can’t continue to bash the people that are disliking the program. They have every right say what they disagree on about it as well as you do, thats the purpose of feedback. You can’t satisfy everyone, but yet you try to accomindate majority. Most don’t even understand why people are complaining. For instance, lets say we were all on the waiting list for 2009 camero. It was promised to be delivered towards to first quarter of the year. We were shown 85% complete and functioning prototype (photosharing/calling/nice sleek design). But yet 9 – 11 months later, you release a completely redesign of different prototype then the one that was shown. That is 25% complete? Most say, “Well it’s still beta.” Maybe you didn’t see the video. Let me refresh your memory. Watch the functionality of this one, then reconsidered what people are saying. http://www.metacafe.com/watch/520923/windows_vista_yahoo_messenger/
But on the other hand. The guys that did love that (crying) we might as well forget having that one. Majority rules so. I like the new preview of it (Tabs own!!!!!!) and I really appreciate the fact that Yahoo! did give us something. So lets continue to give/hear feedback from both aspects and hopefully the turnout will be something that we all love. ^,,^

you morons realise that WPF can be used on XP right?
so theres no reason this version of messenger wouldn’t work on XP, all you need installed for WPF is .Net 3.0 installed which is done so by default on Vista.

This is for those people who didn’t have their yahoo gadget working.
So if you see your yahoo gadget blank with the red X at the corner, all you have to do is turn on the UAC ( User Account Control in Control Panel), then restart your computer. After you do that, you’ll get your yahoo gadget working fine. I did that on my computer.

u let us saw a video of an almost complete feature of Ym for vista then now you released it, it was very different from the video i saw. it was WAy different. i’ll give the 1st video preview a 95% grade and the beta version a 25% grade. see the difference?
i’ll let u see the old video. the preview dat has a grade of 95%
