New update for Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta 2
November 21, 2007 on 1:40 pm | In Mac version | 109 Comments
The third update of Mac 3.0 Beta 2 (build 78326) is now available to keep you company over the holiday weekend.
There are no new features in this update but we fixed a couple of crash issues, including an update to the crash reporting for Leopard users.
We also made improvements to the sign in process when you’re behind a firewall. So if you’ve had issues in the past with signing in from the office or elsewhere with a firewall, please try installing this new update.

Happy Thanksgiving to everyone!

Should we wait for another year?

I did upgrade to new version and not from time to time my messages are not going to the user. I can receive messages from the buddy but buddy is not seeing messages I type. Only if he loges our he receive my messages that I did send him. Or if I log out and log in he receives my messages. Is there an Mac support?
Comment by dmmatic — November 22, 2007 #
You know yahoo says they listen to the users, but almost all of the users are saying we want voice but they dont hear us at all, I think that all of us MAC users should stop using yahoo and go to something else and then they would not have to worry about a MAC, and I think that Sarah Bacon should find another job, because she is no help at all. WE WANT VOICE!!!!
Comment by Bill — November 23, 2007 #
Look folks read peoples comments VOICE ON THE MAC IS NOT POSSIBLE microsoft own the codec the tsp codec (amongst others needed) voice will NEVER EVER be on mac or linux the codec licence is mega bucks and it will not happen.
Comment by Karl — November 23, 2007 #
Then I’ll quit using Yahoo Messenger. Forget it – gotta have voice with my webcam.
Comment by Craig — November 23, 2007 #
It’s just silly to say that “voice on the Mac is not possible.” How did Skype do it? How did iChat and iVisit and Camfrog do it? If Microsoft owns the voice codec why is Yahoo allowing themselves to be held hostage? Why can’t they change or add a codec that will work on all platforms – like every other messenger service on the planet? Sheesh!
Comment by Zorg — November 24, 2007 #
Karl you are incorrect and ignorant in your knowledge. Truevoice codec is not possible on the mac but that codec is ONLY used in chatrooms and conferences. However the Call p2p voice codec is a completely different codec which does have mac licensing rights and can be done. That is the feature the mac team planned on implementing in beta 2 originally which never happened do to issues in development. I wouldn’t rule that feature out just yet, just not in immediate future I imagine. But it’s also not impossible. Do more research before making false comments.
Comment by Adam (MysticalOS) — November 24, 2007 #
Oh and on the Truevoice codec notes. Vista also doesn’t include the codec by default either because even MS didn’t want to pay to relicense it. Based on that it’s not logical that yahoo will continue supporting it for foreseeable future either. Not unless yahoo wants to pay to license it to be bundled with future yahoo messenger versions for windows. Or perhaps expect all users to somehow know to download and install it themselves without actually endorsing it or giving the download links to it which could be seen as a sneaky attempt around licensing. So it’s likely yahoo will find another cheap or free solution anyways at some point when Vista slowly fades XP out.
Comment by Adam (MysticalOS) — November 24, 2007 #
I am very appreciative of the updates. I think that Yahoo Messenger for Mac is becoming a nice application. The subtleties are what make Mac apps great. Congrats to the team. I’d love to see Yahoo Messenger for Mac incorporate Photo Sharing. I think that’s a large void. It would also be cool if the webcam window could be detached from the Messenger Friend’s List. Thanks for allowing the feedback.

Comment by meka — November 25, 2007 #
The one feature I loved about Yahoo was photo sharing. I will vote for that feature as well.

ADAM ur a programmer right? cant u make a program that will hook to Yahoo messenger for MAC and enable it to have voice? is that possible? a sort of patch or something…just wondering if u guys can do that then u can sell it like ur YTK pro.

Any chance of supporting 10.3.x users?
Comment by Bob — November 26, 2007 #
One thing that should be addressed as soon as possible is the ignore feature not working. Tired of getting booted by people I cannot ignore. This is happening in Yahoo Chat Help of all the places also, maybe someone there could look at the logs.

Mac users waiting for VOICE … Linux users waiting for VOICE.
No longer.
As an ex-windows user, now on LINUX UBUNTU and just doing ocaccionals dual-booting to JUST to use the VOICE on YM I got sick of it. I will not wait any more. I will spend my lasting money on my PhoneOut account and I will not put my money any more there.

Why can’t we get messanger (and not the web version, that sucks) for Macs that are still using OS X 10.3.9? Isn’t there a way to download something that will let us install messanger for us?
Comment by unidentified — December 1, 2007 #
Why is it, that the OLD versions of yahoo will sign on, but this new version will not. I get the message that the servers are busy. I tried checking the firewall box too – but that didn’t help either.

Hi, there – I have a Powerbook G4 with Tiger and when I downloaded the beta Yahoo messenger yesterday, my system started to freeze every time I went on the Internet. Does anyone else have this problem? I had no problems prior to the download. I’ve since put it in the trash and emptied it, but my cursor still freezes after a short time of being on the net.

if Yahoo is not going to do voice why dont they just F****** come right out and say “No We Are Not Going To Put Voice in Yahoo for The MAc.” Instead of leaving us hanging, Just tell us so we will not ask or keep waiting for it.

to the guy saying linux never will…. Oh yes it could there is plenty of places to get the win32 codecs from and I now have helped make a client that runs on linux and uses the win32 codecs and guise what eeek it gets voice in chat. And no i will not tell you the name of this client because it seems like every time yahoo finds out there is one that works with voice for linux or is even able to join chat they change something to break it …Not saying they do this on purpose (caugh caugh yes they do)
Comment by Robert Frayer — December 6, 2007 #
As long as there’s no banner ad on the main application window, I’m happy
I hate voice chat, it consumed a lot of bandwidth in my office. messenger is supposed to be a simple text based chat program, not some elaborate teleconference program
If it has voice thing (along with the already available webcam thing), it’ll be bloated as hell and consume a lot of bandwidth like the windows version did
Comment by Chriswan — December 6, 2007 #
y’all, lets be patient and lets not complain. Yes us MAC users want voice but one step at a time. We now we can get in chat rooms now we need to wait PATIENTLY for them to get voice going. Patience is a virtue I say. there I said my peace.

I studied the problem with the ignorelist. I get the impression that the ignorelist works for the first 99 id’s that you add to the ignorelist. After that you cannot add any, until you remove some other id’s.
If you cannot remove id’s in the preferences pane, then try it manually:
- Quit Yahoo messenger
- Go to the Library-folder in your personal folder.
- Open the preferences-folder and look for a file named com.yahoo.messenger3.Users..plist. Open this file using the application Property List Editor. It will automatically launch when you double-click on the file.
- Expand Root by clicking on the triangle in front of the word “Root”.
- Expand IgnoreList in the same way.
- Select the last item under the IgnoreList. If your IgnoreList is full the last item will be 98. If you have selected the last item click on the button “Delete”.
- If you like you can delete more numbered items.
- When you ready deleting the numbered items, choose “Save” from the “File”-menu.
- Then close the Property List Editor
- Start Yahoo-messenger and go to a chatroom and check whether the Ignore-feature works again for new id’s.

hey mac users you know that there is alot of unix cross overs for mac right i mean there is clients and win32 codecs that you can get in packages if you just look and yes you can get voice too you do not have to rely on a company that is so obviousely un-interested in anything non-microsoft
Comment by Kain — December 10, 2007 #
Voice conferencing would be nice to have as well as support for 10.3.x. However there never will be voice for chat rooms. This is not Yahoo’s fault. The people who made the code yahoo uses will only licence the code for window$

Hi there. Ever since I installed a Yahoo Messenger 3.0 Beta 2 for Mac, I have not been able to log in at all.
It’s been 3-4 weeks now (17 Dec 2007) and I still get a message saying, “SERVERS ARE BUSY, PLEASE TRY AGAIN LATER”.
Is there some special setting I need to change?
Can someone here please help me, any comments appreciated. You can post it as a comment to any of my articles on http://paulhokangsang.blogspot.com
Many thanks,

Paul:
Re: the trouble you’re having logging into Yahoo! Messenger for Mac. It may have to do with your connection settings. Try this:
1. From the Apple menu choose “Preferences”
2. In the preferences window, select the “Connection” pane.
3. There are two choices, “Default” and “Behind Firewall”. Change the setting to “Default”.
Also, be sure you’re on the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta 2 (build number is 78326). If you’re not on that build, go to http://messenger.yahoo.com/mac.php to download it.
Hope that helps,

Hi, Does anyone know how to bookmark a fave room, save a link to a fave room, or enable the “join user in chat” button that used to exist in messenger? I am completely unable to find my fave local room in the chat-room lists, and the only way to get there is to accept an invitation from someone already in the room. There also used to be text that 1 could type into any room, something like :/join=roomname1, but I can no longer remember how it went. I am using an apple g4, osx10.4, messenger build 3.0 beta2. Any help is appreciated. Best wishes, Rick

Dear Sarah Bacon,
The latest build 3.0 78326 still crashes frequently on my iMac with leopard 10.5.1. I have reverted back to tiger 10.4 and it hasn’t crashed once so it is a bug. My friends have downloaded and tested the latest build on their macs with 10.5.1 and it crashes a lot. I have clicked report to yahoo every time it does it so I’m sure your developers will be aware of this?

After I upgraded from Tiger to Leopard, my yahoo beta 3.0
[Version 3.0 beta 2 (build 78326)] has following hassles –
1. send file does not work – people on the other end are unable to get the file.
2. video which worked on tiger has stopped working too. Sme problem Once people on the other end accept the invitation, it just hangs – and on my end it keeps says waiting for invitee
Comment by anthony — February 13, 2008 #
Sending files doesn’t work on Leopard.
Even in Tiger, it wasn’t that good: it wouldn’t go p2p (with real IPs, not NAT-ed, no firewalls and such, both parties had real IPs and such); it doesn’t work at all on Leopard (just a stupid ERROR).
The codec is owned by Microsoft? Good, just add a new codec to the Mac version and add it to the Windows version as well. When you have calls like: win-to-win-> use the MS one(for compatibility with the old versions) when you have win-mac and mac-mac->use the secondary one.
The Mac version of Yahoo Messenger is very crippled, compared to the Windows one.I’d like to get friends to stop saying “oh, you’re working on your Mac again; photo share, file transfers and games don’t work, that’s not nice”.
Comment by andy — February 22, 2008 #
Looks like skype does video, voice, chat and file transfers. Is that what we have been reduced to using ?

It’s great that my webcam works on this version of yahoo messenger for mac but the sending and receiving of files does not always work and there is no photosharing option on the newest release of yahoo messenger for mac. Mac products are becoming a bigger phenomena and will pretty much be a very big contender in the near future. I would Get the gears going and get the photosharing and file sharing options up and running smoothly ASAP because they are a big thing to have on yahoo no matter what kind of computer you have. So Yahoo Team….please hear the calls of the people on here and see it as a wake up call for this product.

I threw yahoo messenger in the trash in attempt to uninstall everything and re-install fresh, but after the install yahoo messenger no longer opens on my system.. The icon bounces up and down in the tray but that’s it. How can I get it to open? Is there anything I should check? I have 1.25G of space and I’m not using it all so I don’t think that’s the issue.

The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac requires 10.4 (Tiger) or 10.5 (Leopard). We do not have a version that works on OS10.3.9.
Alternatively, you can use Yahoo! Messenger for the Web:

Sadly, the YM 3 beta 3 (126432) still suffers from firewall connection that only allow port 80 to use (can’t connect at all). But somehow, even Adium still has the same problem as well.
So, is it a Mac OS X problem or Yahoo Messenger (server) problem in questioning (while the Windows version has no problem at all in the same network)?

Hi jenny, I would like to know what web address you placed in web proxy in system preferences? Would greatly appreciate! Thanks!

Hi Sarah, I actually have a problem connecting YM in the office using “Behind Firewall” option. My other colleagues who use PC do not have problems connecting with “Behind Firewall” option. I do get to log in a few times, but when I do, I “lose my connection to the server” and get disconnected.
Please help!

Hi I just bought my MacBook and downloaded the latest Mac Beta 3.0 yahoo Messenger. I can log in and see my added friends. However, I can’t join in the chat rooms. I changed my set up from Default to Behind firewall and vise versa but I just can’t join in the yahoo chat room.
Any advice?
Thanks.

My Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta 1 is not working properly now. I have OSX 10.3.9 and cannot use 3.0 Beta 2. What’s the problem and why won’t it work properly now?

Marty, what is this OSX 10.3.9? Do I need additional software to be able to join in yahoo chat rooms?
I am tired of Apple now.

70% of the time my YM for Mac does not shut down when directed. To shut it down I have to used Force Quit.
What is the problem?

I used to be able to use voice chat Mac to PC perfectly. Now when the PC calls me, the box that allows you to accept the call wont pop up, it basically wont give me any options to connect, even though the person on the other end can hear a dial tone. I am also having to force quit YM quite alot.
This all seemed to change over night, and i have changed nothing on my system….anyone know what might be wrong?

does anyone know of a multi-patch/polygamy patch for Y! messenger for mac?
Comment by cheryl — November 10, 2008 #
I don’t like that the messenger program does not shut down and I have to use force quit all the time. I didn’t have this with older versions on Mac.

Yahoo messenger works, but will not load my friends window, can not see who is online, but they can message me. All I get is the little spinning timer. I have deleted yahoo messenger and reinstalled it, same problem. what’s up. Older version works fine. So now what ?

I have a similar problem to others
- when trying to log on with the behind firewall option ..it says servers are too busy.
- when trying to log on with the default option ..it says i’ve entered incorrect credentials and to try again
Now i definitely am typing the right username and password because i can log in using adium. Please provide me a solution to this.
Thanks
