Update for Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta

November 7, 2007 on 9:06 pm | In 9.0 version | 294 Comments

Thanks to everyone who has tried Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta. We really appreciate the feedback you’ve been providing. Tonight we’ve pushed out an update to the Beta (version 9.0.0.907) that you can download by visiting http://beta.messenger.yahoo.com.

Much of the feedback we’ve received has focused on a handful of areas:

- Viewing your contacts by their Yahoo! ID vs. their full name or nickname. We’ve added this preference back in to the product. Download this latest version, then go to Messenger > Preferences > Appearance.

- New expanded contact list. If you’re finding that this new look is too spacious for you, go to the Contacts menu and select “Compact List”. This will reduce the size of the Avatars and condense the height of your list overall.

- Message formatting in the IM window (the line break after the name rather that starting text on that first line). We’ve developed a set of handy keyboard shortcuts to give you some other options for your IM window. The shortcuts are a temporary fix; we’ll build something more permanent into a future release of 9.0.

- Installation problems for Windows Vista users. In this latest refresh, we’ve made changes to the Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta installer that should fix most of the Vista errors. If you’re on Vista, please give it another try and use our feedback page to let us know if you still encounter issues.

- Games are missing from the IM window. There were some changes to the Yahoo! Games platform that required us to remove them from this version for awhile. We are trying to get them back into a future release of 9.0; we’ll keep you posted. In the meantime, if you love your Pool or Checkers, we recommend returning to Yahoo! Messenger 8.1.

- The LAUNCHcast plug-in, along with all the other plug-ins like Yahoo! 360, still work in 9.0! Just click the Plug-ins button near the bottom of your Messenger window to find them.

There are also a few things about Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta that you may not know about. One is that 9.0 is the first version of Messenger that is unicode compliant. This means that it supports IMs and status messages in many more languages than before.

A few other interesting tips… 9.0 will remember your status between sessions. So if your status on a Saturday night says “Partying like it’s 1999!”, be sure to change it when you get to work on Monday. Also, if you have both a Yahoo! and a Windows Live ID for a friend, your friend will appear in your contact list only once. To IM your friend on the Windows Live network, click the drop down arrow next to the IM button below their name when you hover on them.

And lastly, if you usually show both online and offline contacts in your list, you can set a preference to bold your online contacts to help distinguish them. You’ll find that preference under Messenger > Preferences > Appearance (Show online contacts in bold text).

Thanks again for taking Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 Beta for a test drive and providing feedback. We’ll keep you posted here on the blog about further developments.

  1. Hi Sarah,
The changes are welcome. However, hindi version of messenger is great but, we still can’t write in hindi. I like http://in.webmessenger.yahoo.com that actually lets us write in Hindi. Can you guys fix that please? It doesn’t really make sense to not being able to write in Hindi eventhough the whole messenger is in Hindi.

  3. Please remove some clutter from the interface. I don’t wish to se the plugins and “Add contact” buttons all the time. I never use the plugins and don’t add contacts all the time to need a button right there. Please add an option to disable this, like in 8.1

The same thing with Pricing or whatever is that under my status. I never use services from Y! that I have to pay for. And even if, the services are not available in my country. This was also a problem in 8.1.

Please don’t bring some of the clutter from 8.1 to this version and remove the newly introduced clutter.

    Thanks.

    1) Emotion List is not showing up.

    2) Show/Hide the Status, Contact Search Bar, Tool Bar, Yahoo Voice Bar, Plug-In and Yahoo! Search Bar.

    3) Filters dont work.

    4) When ignoring someone who is not in your list is enable and when you joined the room you dont see text at all.

  5. Signing in to Yahoo Messenger via Windows XP SP2 is still virtually impossible. Even with a brand new accout, I still can’t use the new beta. I have never encountered so much trouble with beta testing for the last 8 years!

    Comment by Joe — November 8, 2007 #

  6. Good job Yahoo!. While I wish you would’ve fixed some more bugs and added back features or even some new ones (*cough* an integrated captcha window!), this build is definitely an improvement. I like the fact that you’ve added back the ability to do the old style of PM messaging – line by line w/o the grouping of messages.

Now, if you could only do the following I’d be even happier (as I’m sure LOTS of others would be):

    1) Integrate your Captcha support like you’ve got in your Mac version of Messenger. It’d be SO MUCH more convenient!

    2) Add Games back!

    3) Add official Tabbed PM/IM support!

Please think this stuff through. These would be instant *winners* for the heavy majority of users. All in all good job Yahoo! Keep up the good work.

  9. so far i like it as 2 only

why? because so many features are not in this 9.0 version unlike the 8.1.

    ————-FEEDBACK——————————————————————–

    1) you cant disable the Plug-Ins tab (which can be done in 8.1 version).

    2) when using an alias name instead of the main account, the Smileys dont show up in PM.

    3) when we use the sub profile account(which my friend havent added) to PM a friend we get disconnected.

    4) the ability to disable certain features are not included, like Plug-ins and also that Add a Contact tab is so annoying , which is both at the bottom of the friends list.

    5) i ADDED one of my sub profile and when i decided to change the Status to available the DOT didnt change color and stayed color GRAY.

    6) our account info is showing when you added/get added by anyone or someone (what happened to PRIVACY). our privacy is at your hands.

  10. Yahoo Inc please refer to YM 8.1 features to be added back in YM 9.0.

or give us an option to use in YM 9.0 if we want to use the “Classic Look” (YM 8.1 features)

this will save you guys a lot of time rewriting Yahoo Messenger over and over.

Comment by Dave (Yahoo Chat Fanatic) — November 8, 2007 #

  11. OK, the added features are welcome. But what about the classic skin? Some of us are really huge fans of that.

And are there any plans to rewrite the Message Archive anytime soon? Perhaps even make it usable…?

    Comment by Doctor Bonez — November 8, 2007 #

  12. All I can say is feedback it.

But I have to say, can you guys please fix the existing bugs in this version? Can you please address the issues I’ve posted before including but not limited to “Ignore anyone not on your Messenger List” being broken, the chat word filter being broken and writing/using the wrong registry key, and the chat window taskbar item not flashing on receiving new messages.

If these 3 bugs would be fixed, a lot of Yahoo! Messenger users would be happy. I spend a lot of time in the Yahoo! Chat Help rooms, and the “Ignore anyone…” and the chat filter are among the two most frequently asked questions there.

There’s other issues like the “Cannot ignore yourself” dialog box popping up when somebody floods a chat room. This probably could easily be fixed, so I’m requesting this issue finally get addressed as well. There’s also a notorious chat window UI issue still present in v9.0 beta, the horizontal scrollbar on the bottom of the chat user list when you move the chat window out of focus or move another window on top of it, and then you put the chat window back into a focus the scrollbar is created. It shouldn’t be created in the first place.

Well, thank you for this beta refresh. I’ll edit my bugs list to go with what’s been done and said here. =)

Thanks for listening to all us.

  13. Yahoo Inc , im use to CAPTCHA now and the 3HOURS ROOM LIMIT

but can you guys make the YM 9.0 have the ability to relog back in the room after 3hours SO all we have to do is enter the newly generated CAPTCHA?

please make the next build like this.

  20. Reported by feedback a while ago but not fixed:

    1) The up arrow (or menu option Edit>Previous Message) in the chat input box does not recall the previously sent message – it still works in IMs

    2) The word filter settings are obtained from one registry key but saved to another, meaning they never take affect beyond the session.

    3) The /help text in chat is vastly out of date, there is no /follow or /goto, and /cls doesn’t work either.

    4) The chat window in the taskbar does not blink when there are new chat posts.

And please, integrate captcha into messenger, to avoid having to open up a browser – many users fall over at this point due to popup stoppers and it’s inconvenient.

I tried for at least 30 minutes and nothing.Says that thing about forgotting the pass or id, but I tried it with the mail and the web version of Y!M and it worked. I even thought that someone found my password so I changed it, but still no luck to sing in. Please give me an answer. Thanks in advance.

  23. Same here…appears yahoo messenger is down because I cannot login. This seems to be all versions though as I used 8.1 this morning and upgraded this afternoon with no luck either way. It is very bothersome that yahoo decides not to post anything about this so all users are left in the dark. For shame!

  24. i don’t really like it..it’s kind’a boring because the skin isn’t fully showned..only that little bar it’s blue and the rest is grey and tiring

  25. Ok, I couldn’t sign in because of an enormous bug. Explanaition: I’m under proxy, and Y!M 9 is set to use no proxy, just like 8.1. In 8.1 I don’t have to use the option with proxy, it works ok without. But if I want to run 9.0, I have to select the proxy option, otherwise it won’t work. Please make 9.0’s connection just like 8.1 and previous versions. I hope you understand, because my English is not so good.

  26. Shift-CTRL-0 doesn’t seem to work (Slovenian keyboard on English Vista, tried both zeros: on alphanumeric and numeric part of keyboard).
Also for some reason when using these shortcuts in a longer conversation the window seems to scoll up quite a few lines (so I need to use the slider to bring it back to the last line).

  27. Another bug: we don’t have anymore the option to disable tips.

    Comment by Keloo — November 8, 2007 #

  28. What about putting a chat button back on the top of messenger. I hate having to scroll through file to open it especially with the captcha thing that knocks you out of chat now. Plus I think it would get more people back into the chat rooms again, unless you don’t want people in chat anymore which I guess could be a possibility.

  29. I’d like a “Default Skin” to be available – something that uses the default widgets provided by the OS. Sometimes things are better without skins..

  30. Hey this problem has been with the yahoo messenger for a while now, I thought you guys would find out about it and fix it eventually but it is still there….there is something wrong with the word filter settings. It filters my words even though it is set on “None”, then I have to set it on “Weak” or “Strong” and click Apply and then reset it to “None” again and then it works. It acts that way every time I close it and reopen it. It is rather annoying so I would appreciate it if you would fix it.

    Comment by Sarmad — November 8, 2007 #

  31. Please remove the price thingy under my status! Many DO NOT have to call people through Yahoo when most of us can call anyone for free within the USA and Canada. I like making Yahoo skins, why don’t you bring back the old way of skinning. I would like to hide my ‘plugins’. I don’t use them! They are a waste of time and resources! Why do you have to come out with 9.0 when you can still work out the bugs in 8.1?

    Comment by Yafoo — November 8, 2007 #

  32. Oh, one more thing I forgot to add…
When I am in a chat room, I don’t see other people’s text when I have my options checked that only people on my buddy list can IM me. I refuse to uncheck that because I do not want bots and perverts IMing me!

    Comment by Timmy — November 9, 2007 #

  37. There are still problems with it and msgr 8.x as well:

    1. You made it so that if you have it set to “ignore anyone not on your list”, then you can’t see what people are typing in the chat room. This is incorrect. You want to be able to see people chatting whether you have this set or not. But if someone *DOES* set it like this, you should block ALL pm/invites/web cam./etc–basicall ALL communications with the persons yahoo id on *YOUR* server side (not on the clients side as it is now). This will allow people to chat as normal, but if they choose to set it they can be protected from pm bombs, spam, and bootings/etc.

    2. Not associated with msgr per se, but more of a fallout issue with captcha (I thinkn). The problem that I see is now that you have captcha in msgr, the bot runners appear to have migrated to using yahoo email and sending yahoo user group invitations to users. I have continuously reported these as spam, but they keep comming. I never got these invites before in yahoo user groups, only legitimate ones. It could be not-related, but it seems too coincidental since it started not long after you started the captcha. It’s not harmful of course to receive these, just annoying. But just a heads up and fyi in case nobody else has reported seeing these.

  40. Glad to see some vast improvements however it still lacks some much needed features the bug that will not allow you to turn your pms off needs to be fixed its been present since yahoo 7.0!. Also why does it not have an internal CAPTCHA window this is not difficult to do no one wants to wait till there browser loads etc when there is NO need for it the mac version has it why cant windows??. The not ignoring friends on your list bug (in my case) stops me using messenger for chat and i along with MANY others have to use 3rd party clients

    Comment by Karl — November 9, 2007 #

  49. Hello Yahoo:
I use yahoo messenger and yahoo webcam to communicate with my friends and family. To make the webcam viewing simple for our folks, I have added their account in the webcam option “Always allow the following people to view my webcam”. It works great; they can simply click the “view my webcam” link and watch my webcam, without going through a permission process.

But here is the problem. Even if the accounts on the other end are logged in as invisible, the webcam is still viewable to them. Also, when I select “who is watching me” on the webcam window, those (invisible) accounts are not visible in the “you are being watched by” list.

It looks like there is no preference in yahoo to enforce the viewer to be visible to watch the webcam.

Am I doing something wrong? Or is this something yahoo is not supporting in the current version of the messenger? If not, would I be able to see this important privacy feature in future versions?

    Thanks

    Manoj

  54. Generally I like YM 9.0 but there are few things that really need to be changed:

    1. When you go to help > check for updates it says: “You are currently running the latest Yahoo! Messenger version 9.0″ even though Yahoo posted this update for it. Maybe that will be fixed in the final version.

    2. Yahoo please! After so many complains from users I thought Yahoo will finally change this but still nothing. Again, after you update, messenger changes previously saved general user preferences and checks “Automatically start Yahoo! Messenger” I always try so hard to think of a reason why you guys refuse to change this?

    3. The webcam is the same quality as it was since version 6. Competitor Skype (that I don’t use or like) moved forward and it’s now offering super quality webcam.

    4. The interface is pretty bland. Grayed emotions, audibles, format, buzz, webcam and file send and couple of other things in the contacts list all until you hover over them look depressing and uninviting. All of my friends that downloaded this beta and that I talk to, strongly agree with me about this new ‘idea’. I think Yahoo should use maybe some more neutral color and after hover use some stronger color. Anything but gray!

    5. I wish you guys talk directly to us users. Especially when there is a lot of interest in the topic I rarely see anyone answers any of the questions. I know you read the what we post, but your comments are important too. It’s called two-way communication

That’s it for now… Thanks for keeping us posted

Bro if we dont report this issues they will take time and chat will be slow & crap. They will speed up with updates and we should have a better quality messenger.

So I suggest you do the same thing, gather all the issues you’ve been having and do the feedback to Yahoo Inc.

  67. I just noticed the behavior of the windows of YM 9 when the main pager is closed(still running @ taskbar). IM window gets inactive after few seconds and i believe it has something to do with the adds at the bottom of the pager. When it changes there (even if main pager closed) it gets the IM window inactive. Anyone else experiencing this behavior ? Im using Vista Home Premium.

  68. I suggest that Yahoo change the captcha and use recaptcha. These new bots have ocr technology that can crack the captcha and the code that users
have to type in is useless. I suggest that Yahoo come up with a better solution like recaptcha the ocr cant read it.

  71. yahoo messenger 9 is UGLY
how can I hide the “call bar” that appears up before the contact search bar?
next thing: what is with those skins?!
i liked more the old skins.
ahm, what is new in this version?! just the compact and detalied list view?
oh, another new thing is that in the IM window the name of the person talking appears just once even if the person sends more than 1 line
please reply with something that will make me keep this version.
when you will have send “folder” not just files??
this is not the way to make things better…

  73. The new beta is great and all, but give us an option to get rid of the annoying $0.00 -Phone Out status AND please finally release a version with TABS! AIM has tabs, WLM has tabs with an add-on, it’s time for Yahoo! to have tabs! Chat windows should be tabbed. Make it happen! I have faith in the team that you will do just that.

    Comment by dd — November 15, 2007 #

  85. Well… i’m only using it at my work because it’s a pc more performant…. Still though i noticed… and it’s not only happening to me… that the status doesn’t work or it’s awfull to try to change it… because we can’t. Also if i want to share a file with my buddy it takes ages to download the file…. so we have to use an alternative as web file hosting.

    Do something with that.

Also I don’t like the fact that you had to pull out the games.. i know some friends that will not use 9.0 just for this reason.

i’ve seen also a clip presentantion for the vista version… the 9.30 beta it’s very close to it.. but i would like to see for example the tabs options, so that when we speek with more than two or three persons we can tab the conversation windows in to one !

Also I’d very much love and option to have all chat windows separately or tabbed in one window [Pidgin style]. I’m sure lots of users will appreciate this as well. A nice thing to do with video playback in chat window would be pinning on top the chosen chat window …

  121. Hi Yahoo!,

I would like to make a legitimate complaint. Most users of XP SP2 and Vista can’t download and/or can’t log into Messenger Beta. Frankly
I can’t see why beta won’t work for at least XP. Also, after many attempts at signing on, my Yahoo ID wouldn’t even work for the Yahoo website??? It took 20min for me to use it, like my accoount was trying to reset itself. (And yes, all my information was correct.) As Yahoo! is a very respected company, I think that you all should at least check you programs at least for signing on!! Of course Beta version for projects aren’t perferct and will always need refining, but the least you should be able to do is SIGN ON. Maybe you shouls try field test BEFORE you launch even a Beta program. This would have eliminated a simple problem of be able to sign on, at least for XP users an Vista always takes more time in programing. Thanks For listening. A EXTREMELY concerned user!!!

  122. Ok..i have a few bugs.8.1 was bugging on me alot recently. So imagine how happy i was when i saw 9.0. i thought, new Yahoo, less bugs.BOY WAS I WRONG!!! Now I can’t even SEE my contact list. It’s just blank. I have to manually 1 by 1 click send an im after alternate clicking the icon that shows up next to the time….:( I can no longer send mass messages to groups of my friends, (also known as group messages) -_-…as a result I have practically abandoned yahoo for msn, which works bug free as always. Imagine my surprize when yahoo made me a power user for messenger. Since yahoo regonized my previous useage and wanted to reward me, I thought it only fair to give yahoo messenger 1 more try and download the updated version that they came out with.It is still in the process of downloading, and i hope i will be able to see my list again.:( i dont know what prevented me from reverting back to 8.1,probably lack of time and other more important issues on my things to do list, since MSN has sastisfied my iming needs. I really do hope you get this problem fixed, and thanks for makin me a power user for yahoo mail and yahoo messenger.

Do the rules of good business not apply to a company that is in heavy competition? Do you think you can’t lose users over something like this? I’m glad I got the “award” of being frustrated for being a long time messenger user. This is akin to not smelling the cream and pouring it directly into your coffee cup, only to see the curds rise to the top.

  129. I can’t be certain that this problem is from the 9.0.0.907 release but it began when I downloaded and began using it. Very frequently, while I’m typing anywhere, it seems the “focus” of my computer goes off of the page/program where I’m typing. This means I have to click back on the page/program and continue typing. It’s not such a huge deal if it happens once or twice a day but two or three times every four or five minutes is a bit much.

Is anyone else having this problem? It did begin with the installation of this program but I suppose it could possibly be something else. If it is from 9.0, I truly hope it’s fixed. This is quite aggravating.

  131. Unfortunately since Vista Yahoo messenger has not worked right. Utilizing Chat through Messenger causes Yahoo to crash after about 10 minutes requiring to close out of Yahoo and sign in again. I was hoping with Messenger 9 which I understood was the long awaited Vista compatable Messenger that these fixes would be taken care of. However even this latest beta still wont allow me to sign in, and ultimately crashes just like the prior versions. I am hoping Yahoo will work with Microsoft to get this undercontrol. A Majority of other software compatable issues have already been resolved by other companies-surely Yahoo should step up to the plate.

  140. And now some Vista noticed bugs and issues with the latest v9.0 beta…

    1) The buddy list window doesn’t remember the exact location to save it. For me, it creates itself several pixels to the left from the edge of the screen. Happens on large screen resolutions (1152 by 864 pixels).

    2) Part of the voice bar in the chat window grays out (number of listeners and the person currently on the mic).

    3) The internal speaker beeps when trying to double click and PM somebody on your buddy list.

    My specs:

Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit (all updates) & Yahoo! Messenger v9.0.0.907 beta.

    Comment by Venom — November 21, 2007 #

  141. I have read through all 180-some comments on the previous area and 140-some comments here. I must laugh at some of the things I am hearing and seeing. With only a few acceptions, I have 9.0 operating very similar to 8.1. I have only run into a couple issues which have been reported through the beta feedback. This version of Y!Messenger works great with Vista and the Yahoo 360 add-in is a whole lot better than in 8.1. Although I am earnesty waiting for the Vista version, this version is a major improvement upon 8.1 Some of these so-called “bugs” people will never take into consideration that it just might be something within their own system that is causing it and find it convenient to blame the new product. For some reason, I am unable to use voice within a conference, but can use voice on a pc-to-pc call. Is that Yahoo or is it Vista. I personally think it is a majority of Vista’s problem.

People should not make blanket statements like, it is not compatible with Vista, or every person using Vista or XP cannot use it. It always crashes. Here’s a clue people. Yahoo 9.0 has never crashed here, works great and is faster than 8.1, and YES I am running Vista. I also see people always complaining that the 9.0 version is garbage or doesn’t do this or that or whatever, saying that Yahoo is not taking their customers into consideration. PEOPLE, this is a beta version (anyone with any amount of intelligence knows what “beta” means). If you cannot handle the beta version, then go back to 8.1 until a full release is made that is not in beta stage… EEEAASSSHHH!

This is a great version of Y! Messenger, team. I love it and will continue using it until the long awaited Vista version is released, for that is the one I want, but until then will use and help to better 9.0. Could 9.0 use some improvements? Of course it could, but so could every single program sitting on this computer.

    Comment by James — November 21, 2007 #

  145. Sarcasm?? Nope and I am being realistic in my comments about it. I’m a straight shooter. If/when I think something is trash or garbage, I say so and I don’t mince words. 9.0 has NEVER crashed nor ceased in its operation here, has been very stable, is faster than 8.1 in most aspects (not all) thaat I have seen, has a nice layout, functions and features. Maybe it does eat resources, but I have yet to see it slow my system. It is obviously not eating enough resources that I noice it. I love 9.0 and hope to watch it get ever better through constructive feedback from those who know, understand and realize it is a BETA version. No one is twisting anybody’s arm to run it and those who can realize that it is BETA will give constructive and useful feedback.

    Comment by Dale S — November 21, 2007 #

  146. Well, keep in mind no two machines are alike. You can’t expect a program to work flawlessly on all computer and configurations.

While it may work perfectly for some, for others, including myself, run into bugs and other issues. But at least we’re trying to do something to help Yahoo improve Messenger by giving them the bug and issue reports here and in the feedback form.

My advice if you run into an issue? Well, write down exactly how the crash/bug/issue happened/happens and add what operating system you use (XP or Vista) if it’s 32-bit or 46-bit (normal is 32-bit), what anti-virus/firewall/spyware programs you have running, etc.

As much information we can provide to Yahoo gives us a better chance at issues getting addressed. =)

  147. True. Windows Live Messenger is not exactly one of my favorites. I personally rarely use the file transfer option in Yahoo Messenger, but I sat here today and watched i transfer a 1 meg file over to my wife’s system in less than 3 seconds. I notice some similarities with Live Messenger and in fact there are a few things in Live Messenger I wouldn’t mind seeing in Yahoo. Considering I am always IMing and conferencing and using Messenger to accomplish many taaks, so far it has worked. In fact, I finally hit a problem today, some kind of Visual C library thingy. Course that was sent via beta feedback. I am not saying there are not issues, just not most of the issues that I am reading about. Maybe I am one of the lucky ones. Oh well, time will tell how much better it will get.

  148. I agree with what you are saying Venom. What is funny, I have two different machines running Yahoo 9.0 Vista based and relatively few issues…. at least so far. As we dig deeper into the program and what not, I fully expect things to arise….

But after reading all about the complaints and issues 9.0 Beta has, I’m staying as far away from it as I can! Sounds to me like some software developers are trying to “Cash In” ASAP regardless of the consequences. Thanks, but no thanks!

  162. Hey guys,

Nice work on the interface – i like it; but i do end up getting errors when opening Yahoo

    ———
I keep getting 2 errors whenever I try to open YIM 9.0beta or close it; or when I restart my computer – and YIM starts automatically with WINDOWS.

The instruction “0×02806bd8″ referenced memory at “0×0283dc64″. The memory could not be “read”. Click on OK to terminae the program.

The instruction at “0×7c9105f8″ referenced memory at “0×02830010″. The memory could not be “read”. Click on OK to terminate the program.
    ————-

I uninstalled yahoo and installed it over and over; and with different setup files (mutiple downloads) – still gave me same errors. Any ideas on why I am getting this. I am available through email.

Cheers and keep up the good work.
    John.

  163. In spite of all the comments above, I installed Y! messenger 9.0 beta, and it works great! I still have to get used to the new skins, (no classic view) and they really should add games back (I’ve heard they’re working on that) but other than that, it’s great– and I’m running it on XP Professional, SP 2.

I wont do any ranting or raving, As you know Windows vista is a challenge anyway. (one that I paid for). I’m sure that it has been a challenge for you also. I would love to have any updates you may have came up with so I can have the latest version. Send me something! HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

…. merging several yahoo ID’s of the same person into one would be great too.

… my fiance is japanese. Why can’t she use the japanese IM version to chat with me ? And btw .. why can’t we use yahoo mobile for japanese numbers ?

    Comment by Dr.A — November 26, 2007 #

  167. I have been using YM for a long time, because I love the interface, the emoticons, the rates are right and its got cool features!
YM9 Beta is good.. but it can be made better!

    Features I love:
    1. Call forwarding incoming calls. (But may I suggest that you provide a new icon for users who have enabled the feature? Skype offers this feature and I think it’s a good feature too!)
    2. Phone out balance visible and at the top rather than at the bottom.

Could you fix the following bugs please?
Bug #1: A big glaring bug: I use the Phone out service and call PC-PC regularly. Logging into YM9 beta does not always show the Phone Out balance. (I know I have credit). I am forced to log out again and re-log-in.. and then it seems to work!

Bug #2: Voice quality has definitely deteriorated! Both for PC-PC and PC-Phone services, both of which I use regularly. Please improve it! I think YM8.1 was the better in many ways, most importantly in the sound quality department. I thought there would have been no compromise in that area in YM9 Beta.. but it seems wanting in this area.

Bug #3: Checking “Ring PC Speaker” without having admin rights causes YM9 Beta to crash! (Under Messenger->Preferences->Calling and Audio) (especially on my laptop at home.. I run Windows XP SP2. Never had any trouble with YM8.1)

Bug #4: Checking “Automatically start Yahoo messenger” does not work. (Under Messenger->Preferences-> General)

Bug #5: Super Webcam does not work even though the settings have been turned on (Under Messenger->Preferences-> Super Webcam)

    Areas where improvements are required:
    1. Messenger skins: Very dull and boring. Makes it difficult to read “Messenger, Contacts, Action and help”
    2. Reduction in the time interval the contact details of a contact on messenger is visible.
    3. Bring back the tabbed feature for contacts and address list (like in YM8.1) I liked that more than having to scroll like in YM9.0 beta.
    4. Make it possible for custom message (in status bar) to be modified or deleted.

  195. I don’t like the new chat behaviour. With previous versions the messages go out like this:

    Arun: message1
    Kumar: message2
    Arun: message1

    In the beta is:
    Arun:
    message1
    message2
    Kumar:
    message1

I really don’t like the first line break is a waste of space, that is one of the things I dislike most of MSN Messenger.

And also I prefer to see the nick on every message. I hope the old way could be added at least as an option in the next build.

i think it is better to remove the plug in & add contact buttons from the main window to be showed.

YM 9.0 beta has the following issue :

It steals focus even when running in the background. Say I am using notepad or MS Outlook, the current window just loses focus but still stays on top inactive. I will have to click on it to regain focus. This is very irritating and will happen atleast once every minute. I have confirmed that this is because of YM.

I start sending several files and when something goes wrong with network or whatever and transfer gets interrupted Yahoo deletes all the files already transferred (without even showing the courtesy to put them in the trash bin) This is a very annoying and time wasting feature, esp with how often file transfers fail on yahoo messenger network.

  228. I’ve downloaded version 9 b4 when it first released had no problem with it but went back to 8.1 for a while now I have wireless and tried re installing version 9 and now I cant seem to ever log in is it because I’m using a wireless connection or is this version just that crappy.

  229. Just curious if yahoo has ever considered the tabbed windows for the Vista Version in a version for XP as well. I understand wanting Vista to be different, but a lot of people that still use XP find that the taskbar can quickly become clattered when doing work or school work on computers while also having like umpteen million IM windows.

  230. Unicode compliant is the biggest lie I’ve ever heard about Yahoo Messenger. It’s outragous that you dare say sth so gravely imprecise. Putting aside all techicalities I dare you to call Unicode compliant a messenger that doesn’t allow me to write character from the UTF-8 charset! Or more precisely it reacts to my typing them with deleting the contents of the message.
If that’s a joke it’s on you. I don’t know who was the brain behind making shortcuts for diactrict letters mess up the typing experience (since Y!M 6 or so) but really good going sir. A really smart decision to piss off people who use sth aside the latin alphabet, which would amount to about everyone except english speaking countries in the world. Bravo.
No wonder Microsoft can’t decide on buying Yahoo out. Even they have some common sense left.

  232. I faced really hectic problems with new Yahoo Messenger Beta 9 version.
    1. My XP crash within 15 to 20 minutes after I start this new version of Yahoo Messenger Beta 9.(I guess, It conflicts with the my laptop inbuilt webcam driver)
2.It log off and log in very frequently.

I hope Yahoo will look into this.

So i deleted it, and tried to go back to the tried and true 8.1 But i CAN’T!!! As a matter of fact i can’t install any yahoo at all now. I get this every time I try:

Yahoo! Suite Installer has encountered a problem and needs
to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience.

I have even done a regedit and removed yahoo from the software sources an still can not install. I NEED help please, yahoo voice is the only way I can call my wife in texas from where I am stationed at in Okinawa. Please help…………..THANX

  235. The Beta version had some issues for me.
    1. IM window would freeze during conversations, hour glass would turn and turn for up to a minute or more.
    2. The way messages are displayed, under the persons name.
    3. Tonight I kept getting online notifications for people I had removed from my contact list a long time ago. They were not even in my address book.
I rolled back to version 8 after #3. happened. I do not want to hear people coming and going all night who are no longer on my list..
    4. I agree with comments about the skins, top bar great, the rest of it.. not great. Oh and in the IM window having the emoticons, audibles, etc grayed out made me think they were not available. I liked them in color.
    5. Had a message pop up in the yahoo mail window.. I do not care for that feature. The person who was chatting with me was showing online in my mail window but not on messenger.. I would type a message in an IM window he could see it and respond, but I could only see it in the Mail window. Very frustrating.

I am willing to give it another shot in the future though.

  238. So, I was very excited when I saw that yahoo beta 9 had come out and that it was “supposed” to work with vista. well guess what it doesn’t. I can’t log into yahoo 9 at all I tried every tip and trick posted to get it to work with vista and nothing. Now I love yahoo, I have been using yahoo mail and yahoo messenger for years and I have never been as disappointed with yahoo as I am right now. I expect yahoo to care about their users and try and fix an glitches or problems in a timely manner and honestly right now yahoo has all but dropped the ball. If yahoo doesn’t make an honest attempt at fixing yahoo 9 so it will work for vista users I don’t think I will be able to continue using any of yahoo’s products. Which will really be a shame.

I see others on yahoo Answers have had similar issues, only the sound seems to be a bit different for several people.

PLEASE release a fix for this or remove the sound all together.

    Comment by Darren — April 30, 2008 #

  244. Hi Darren,

Try changing the audible category in your IM window. We think there may be one or two sets that cause this error (e.g. when the last used Audible category is NCAA, Insults and Hellos). In 9.0, the audibles set loads even if you don’t have the menu open; so try changing to a different audible set and see if you still have the issue. Thanks,

Also, supposedly you can right click a group name and select permenantly invisible to everyone in that group, but it’s not working. I had to go through & right click on each individual name in the group.

BRING BACK THE EASY STEALTH OPTIONS PLEASE! it totally defeats the purpose of staying invisible if you log on & then have to select invisible afterwards, there are some people you just NEVER want to have to chat with unless you choose!

Also, let us interact with all the functions when invisible please! We always could before!

  268. Yahoo! Messenger 9 Beta install hangs at 99%. I have two computers running Windows XP Professional Service Pack 3. I installed Yahoo! Messenger 9 Beta on the notebook and it is a wonderful product. I attempted to install it on my desktop (which had Yahoo Messenger 8.1) but the install hangs at 99% A GLB.tmp file such as GLB1C.TMP gets stuck at 50% CPU usage (I have a hyperthreaded processor). I’ve rebooted. I’ve uninstalled. I’ve renamed the Yahoo! folder and attempted to install. I’ve terminated all processes and turned down, then shut down all firewalls yet the problem persists. I’ve attempted to wait it out, but after a few hours the program is still hung at 99%. Is this a known issue? Is there a registry fix? (Desktop is a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 with 2GB of RAM and 1.3TB of HDD space running Windows XP Professional SP3 on a broadband connection, with Zone Alarm Pro as the firewall and anti-virus product.)

  276. The focus stealing is quite irritating, really. Wasn’t sure what was causing it, but I had a sneaking suspicion, since I just installed the 9beta version. After a bit of search, I found that it is indeed the messenger. It happened twice since I’ve started to type this message in. I’ve already tried to use TweakUI, it has an “prevent applications from stealing focus” option, but it seems to do me no good with this issue. The funny thing is it somehow steals focus from it’s own chat windows.
PLEASE, fix it soon, or I’ll be forced to turn to other IM clients in the near future.
    Thanks.

    Comment by sam — October 6, 2008 #

  290. I’ve had no issues running nor installing Yahoo Messenger 9. It’s run very well and visually has appeared better than 7+ in every way except 2. I like that Yahoo Chat’s captcha code for entry is now in the window rather than a link opening in a browser. I also like the ability to hide display pictures together like MSN has done. The merger between MSN and Yahoo does need to be extended to file-sharing and other capabilities, but that can wait…

My only complaints are the lack of either a classic skin or ability to create custom skins; And most importantly, grouped messages… At least make the grouped messages an optional feature, because everyone I know who has 9.0 despises that change. I’d go back to 8.1 if I could reinstall it just for that one feature, it seriously annoys me that much.

To explain what I mean, messages in 9.0 appear like this:

    Tim: Hey.
    What’s up?
Have you tried the new Yahoo 9.0?
    John: Nope.
    Why, is it any good?
    Tim: Yeah dude.
    It’s awesome.

Whereas, in Yahoo 7, 8.1, and the others, that same conversation would appear like this:

    Tim: Hey
    Tim: What’s up?
Tim: Have you tried the new Yahoo 9.0?
    John: Nope.
John: Why, is it any good?
    Tim: Yeah dude.
    Tim: It’s awesome.

That’s so much more organized and just better visually. Some people may like the grouped messages, but at least make it OPTIONAL, not standard. That’s a horrid idea to make a change like that and not let it be optional. Forcing a change isn’t good under any circumstances.
