  1. Absolutely great! I’ve been waiting for that Show/Hide Display Images button for a while now

Great update! Can’t wait to get Leopard.

A Panther release would be pointless in my opinion. Concentrate on Tiger and mostly on Leopard. Maybe you can do some Core Animation tricks in there

  2. Great!

BUT I think this should be beta 3?

  3. Actually it’s just an updated version of Beta 2, so that’s why we’re not jumping to name it Beta 3. Thanks,

  4. Yay for MAC. I might test it out with my MAC computer. thanks Yahoo!

  5. Heh I knew this was coming. It was a forced update since the previous beta 2 could not run AT ALL on 10.5. Glad it was done quickly. Was stuck using adium for a couple days.

I will be running this new build for my list of known issues to see what other under the hood fixes may be present as I’m sure this is a new build based off nightlies that no doubt went under other changes as well.

  6. Thank you so much for all the work being done on the Macintosh platform. I have tried it out and when I try to enter a room it does not give me a captcha link, is this a known bug? Has anyone else had this problem? I am running 10.4.10 if that helps. Thank you Sarah and Macintosh Messenger Team.

  10. Would it kill yahoo to even attempt some feature parity with the Windows client?

“Hey, try out all these neat animated objects and backgrounds – but don’t expect them to actually work in a chat or message session on the Mac!”

Remove animated objects and backgrounds and drop in about 10 other features, such as avatar facial expressions mimicking the smilie just typed in, or using/hearing the sound/voice/music smilies.

  11. Just in time for Leopard’s release too…

    Comment by Venom — October 26, 2007 #

  12. Mike:

I am a Mac developer, and there is a big issue with embedding Flash elements in a Mac app. I know it sounds crazy, but basically Flash elements consume crazy resources and cause big instability. I would suspect the reason you are not seeing some of the PC features in the Mac client is because they are Flash based (the animated themes, the audibles, etc). You should pressure Adobe to make the Mac version of Flash player MUCH better.

Also, I sort of like the fact that the Mac version of Messenger is so much cleaner and streamlined than the PC version, which is a bit more “cartoony” in my opinion. Just my 2¢

    =O

  13. Also, kudos to Karl and Chris on the Mac team at Messenger. Your app is getting better, and the updates are rolling out faster. Nice work.

  14. Version 3.0 beta 2 (build 75170) Report:

    Critical Bugs:

    1. Hang when loading an extremely long chat from message archive, app never recovers because for some reason once it finally finishes loading it, then it asks it to refresh, and starts to reload the thing all over again, endlessly.

    2. Webcam connections are less reliable than b1, the bug fixes to reliability made things worse. Constant dropping of cams both viewing and transmitting, it will appear as it’s still on but will have dropped connection to server and dropped other part from viewing or you from receiving images…it actually shows up as “user stopped broadcasting”. UPDATE: This behavior has been coming and going which is now leading me to believe it could be a server related issue.

    3. Chat becomes laggy and spikes cpu usage and beach-balls some once history gets very long. It should auto purge old chat data like PC counter part does to avoid same problem. Messenger will be slowed to a crawl after a few hours in chat.

    4. Overall the excessive use of CSS style sheets and script within webkit windows in every aspect of yahoo messenger makes it much slower each release getting slower and slower. On a 733mhz G4 test system it runs so slow i can actually watch it drawing the toolbar buttons and lagging just to make text appear on screen. Definitely a serious problem. It’s a chat app, photoshop lags less (literally, i fired photoshop up and played a little, photoshop had a better overall snappiness to UI. Well until a large graphic was opened lol). This has gotten much worse in chat with the CSS layout being even more complex than previous beta 2 release. Should convert some of the UI to native nib files. Especially the chatters list. Parse it into an RStableview or something. Take all the overhead off of the webkitview.

    5. Application crash from webcam if internet connection is shaggy or under serious lag.

    6. /join command lets you join invalid rooms and ignores the packet yahoo sends saying this is an invalid request. Mac Messenger clears the chatters list and thinks you changed rooms but really you’re still in same room because server refused the join to an invalid room. /join needs to acknowledge the error and display it and deny person the room switch to the invalid roomname.

    7. Avatar downloading in chat should be OPTIONAL as it’s a major hog to download 50 avatars upon joining a room. Not to mention security thread do to the exploits in current avatar function that allow it to exploit main profile IDs and used by boots or bots. Should continue to only download avatars from buddies in the room with option to download avatars from everyone else.

    8. Room full messages should be displayed in PM window instead of a growl notification. If room is full it should represent the captcha image with letters already typed so submit can be used to try again. Server allows for retries on join if room is full by resubmitting same code multiple times.

    9. IF validation returns a timed out response or failure response, it should alert the user of such and attempt a retry or abort instead of placing you in room and saying it was successful when it for sure wasn’t and no chatters list or chat-room packets are sent. Messenger should only place you in room if chatters-list is sent to avoid this confusion as well.

    Other Bugs

    1. Time stamps in chat room don’t show properly unless disabled and then re-enabled.

    2. App may show wrong avatar on sign-in screen.

    3. PM windows and chat windows observe bad horizontal scroll bar behavior from very long hyperlinks. hyperlink doesn’t get properly text wrapped to margins of the conversation window and causes horizontal scroll bars to appear.

    4. People invited to cam show up on the viewers list but what if more than one person is invited, how to tell which ones are viewing and what ones are not if they are all on list and cam window only says “2 users invited” also when someone is invited it no longer shows number of viewers. UI needs some tweaking on these issues.

    5. Buddy-list does not honor address-book entries for MSN Live usernames that are in address-book on yahoo like PC counterpart does.

    6. Mac Messenger still erases address book entry for a user added to buddy-list whom an entry already exists for on address-book server. Entry should be updated not overwritten.

    7. During heavy internet lag (ISP was having issues, major latency) Yahoo Messenger would take a LOT longer to launch, several bounces on both macs (intel and ppc). Unusual being the lag should affect connecting not app launch(unless app automatically checks for updates during launch?). On same note, app has unpleasant beach-ball when choosing to connect during same lag. App should remain responsive in case you want to cancel or something. Rather than having to force it closed.

    8. Text may not wrap when typing a message that exceeds first type line. When this happens you will no longer be able to see your text you are typing.

    9. Message archive saves folders for all users encountered in chat, including bots and non friends while you are in room. At time of chat logger empty folders are purged however, but they shouldn’t be created in first place if users didn’t actually PM. (again, client unable to differentiate PM behavior from Chatroom behavior since Chat is using same conversationview.nib. Also very after clearing spam PMs from bots, the bot folder cannot be deleted from message archive it has to be manually purged from application support\yahoo\message archive directory.

    10. Unable to view own webcam. Permission is always auto denied. Probably unusual for me to list this. But for some dial up users I know super-mode screws them up so I view my own cam to give it 2 viewers on purpose.

    11. Message archive should save chats as chatroom name instead of file naming the chat log every singe chatroom participant in room that can fit in an OS X file name.

    12. Message archive should select NONE by default when window is opened. This will prevent it from wasting cpu and time loading up a chat that it decided to select on it’s own. Especially bad when it’s a chat room log that’s very long. Which triggers the hang bug from critical issues section.

    13. Preferences under “messaging” shows an example conversation telling about the Mac Messenger’s limited feature set users can use now. It says they can use call feature now. Since call was removed near last minute this pref section was overlooked.

    14. “username is on your ignore list. If you wish to contact this person you should first unblock him.” This message is displayed when a user is on ignore and you open a PM to them. But the error is using the word “him” instead of a non specific item like “them” or “this person”. or even just “him/her”.

    15. “onmouseover” username information on buddylist does not work for all buddylist entries. I have a buddylist of 72 buddies, it only works for first 61, the last 11 buddies no matter how many times I try I cannot get any information from hover, doesn’t even show the hover tooltip at all that should have information like screen name, how long idle, etc.

    16. Unable to view a users cam without adding them to buddy-list or if they send an invite. Most simple option would be to add a “View Webcam…” menu command to contacts menu like 2.5.3 has. This has been reduced to a minor bug since you can view people in chatrooms now at least. But still can’t view those names not on list or in a room (some friends serve cam on other IDs when in chat to avoid the obvious trolls).

    17. Avatar in PM window for buddy may disappear and not be viable if the person changes status from available to invisible, then back. Or if they change the picture being displayed. The refresh makes it appear behind your icon and not be viewable without copy and paste contents of chat window into textedit to see the icon is still present just buried.

    18. Mobile icons don’t line up names flush with busy, idle, or standard buddylist icons. Example here: http://www.mysticalos.com/images/ym30b2icon.jpg

    19. Window size from chat room is saved into PM window size. (I imagine because the same nib/window is being used for both with different CSS layouts). Chat windows should be big, and saved big. PM windows should be small, and saved small. Split the nibs. It also helps move toward goal of eliminating excessive javascript and CSS anyways in optimizing rendering speed and resource hogging of current system.

    Most requested features:

    1. Cam window detached as an option. Buddy-list integration should not be forced.

    2. Webcam viewer window statistics, the Sub bar that 2.5.3 had, time of last image received etc.

    3. Color fades/effects on OUR typing not just buddies.

    4. Ability to disable nicknames/Actual Names in Chatrooms (separate from PMs)

    5. Option to exclude chat rooms from tabs. Opening a room and having it added to a tiny PM window as a tab is annoying. Always have to drag it out then resize it. Then hope new PMs don’t get added to the chat tab bar instead of the open PM window tab bar. Should allow separation of chat from tab controls all together.

    6. More control on webcam for super-mode. On mac it can’t be disabled or behavior controlled like windows version.

    7. Options to log chatrooms separate from PM windows. I only want to archive my PMs. Not every chat room I visit.

    8. Join Chatroom menu saves recent rooms and profile used in them. But it doesn’t save actual room number. Room number would be nice for those that like to frequent same rooms.

    9. Send message to group. Ability to send a message to an entire buddy group. The options to stealth an entire group and invite entire group to conf were both added in beta 2 which is nice. Just missing that last feature.

    10. Ability to clear old profiles from signin screen history without having to go into ~/library/Preferences/com.yahoo.messenger3.plist and editing the values out.

    11. Ability to view a profile of someone that’s not on list. Where you type in users name. Also good to put in contacts menu with Same with “View Webcam…”

    12. Camera settings. Especially for isight. iSight has annoying auto focus which just works really bad sometimes with yahoo webcam. It can be turned off ONLY by program basis, not globally. So it can only be disabled if program supports advanced cam settings. But should be easy to add since it’s practically just a button that opens up the systems camera controls themselves. Work around for this right now is to use iglasses 2.0 input manager.

    13. Display Cam icons for chatters in chatters list. It’s obvious voice users cannot be displayed in this manor since that information is only sent when connecting to separate voice server. But cam icons are sent in the chatters list packet.

  15. Turns out the problem I was having was not due to the new Beta2 messenger but with my Macintosh. I am very impressed with this new release and being able to enter the captcha code without a web browser. Great work Mac Messenger team.

    Comment by Sloar — October 27, 2007 #

  16. Well, this is certainly looking pretty slick, but the archiving is messed up badly. I turned it on and now I can’t seem to turn it off. That wouldn’t be a such a bad thing but when you go into a chat room it creates a folder for each chatter that enters or leaves the room and one for each person that says something, whether they are a bot or real person. And that wouldn’t be a big problem, but you can’t delete those folders. I know Adam has pointed all this out already (except maybe the problem with not being able to turn off archiving) but I thought i’d repeat it to emphasize the issue.

And I can’t get the ignore feature to work.

These are the big problems with me.

    Comment by RenoDavid — October 28, 2007 #

  17. Thanks Adam for your thorough report. Regarding:

    7. Avatar downloading in chat should be OPTIONAL as it’s a major hog to download 50 avatars upon joining a room.

You should use the “Hide Images” button at the top of a chatroom window. We remember which rooms you disable images for, and there is also a
setting in Preferences if you want to globally turn of display images from all Messenger for Mac windows.

  20. Greater compatibility with Windows Messenger + the ability to “not” have to re-request my MSN contacts to opt-in (i.e., allow me to add them to Yahoo) would be nice. Otherwise, the latter is just really annoying.

Being able to view MSN Personal Messages and properly view Contact Display Pictures would also be great.

    Comment by Bob — October 30, 2007 #

  25. This is still buggy, crashes often I’ve been using yahoo messenger beta for over a year now. the mac yahoo messenger feels like yahoo messenger 2.0 for windows!!

The two major services that I use for yahoo are yahoo mail and yahoo messenger. Both for me are on beta! and the new yahoo mail doesnt work on safari! It seems that yahoo thinks macs are not worth supporting.

I’m tired of waiting for yahoo to fix this.
if skype can do it, why cant you guys do it?

Please check http://www.adiumx.com & http://www.skype.com to see how well they do it.

    Comment by Paul — October 30, 2007 #

  26. To the list of bugs mentioned here already, I’ll add that Beta 2v2 does not reliably display your own avatar. I see my avatar in the login window, and it is remembered in the preferences, but when I sign in it is not displayed in the messenger window. I have to go back to preferences and reselect the image file from my hard drive (even though the image is already previewed in the preferences) to get it to show up.

  28. What’s the rationale behind using Yellow as the “available” color in the glowing dot, when all other messenger services and clients use green? Yellow is typically reserved for when a user is idle. I see all these Yellow spots next to my friends’ names in the Yahoo Messenger list, and my immediate assumption is that they’re all away from their computers! A green/yellow/red system would seem to be much more intuitive.

    Comment by Huy — November 2, 2007 #

  34. For changing your font color, open up your preferences, then messaging , click my fonts and its the button on the right with the T and color in it. Hopefully we can use this blog for feature requests and bug reports, if so I would like to ask the Mac Development team if they could add tabs in the messenger buddy list . One tab for online friends and one tab for offline friends to make it easier to send offlines without going into the view menu and clicking show offline contacts. I think it would be a nice feature to compliment the Macs tradition of ease of use and being intuitive. Also does the Mac Messenger Development team plan on implementing fades? Thank you for all your hard work on making the Mac Messenger better.

  36. Julie (nov 1st) – I have the same issue as you. That damn wheel keeps rolling and no connection, although something must be working cause I’m told that folks in my friends list are logging on and off AND those damn spam witches can still get through to say “hello BUZZ hello there, what’s your name, age, sex, location, etc…” AND I can’t block ‘em ’cause the preferences list is limited to connection and general settings – all else is greyed out. ggrrr…

Hope someone can help sort this out as the new Yahoo Messenger is useless as it stands.

    Comment by Art Bristow — November 3, 2007 #

  37. It’s easier to change font color by control/right clicking in type area in message window. Text entry uses a standard webkit text entry box complete with spellcheck as you type, change font/style etc. Although I do think a more familar UI would be nice than these options tucked away in a contextual menu.

    Comment by Adam (MysticalOS) — November 3, 2007 #

  38. As for the beachball at launch. that’s number 7 on my bug list above. It happens when messenger is unable to reach the updates server when it checks for updates at launch. Usually a result of either a network problem at your end, or yahoo’s. Either way. It is a bug.

    Comment by Adam (MysticalOS) — November 3, 2007 #

  39. Other Bugs:

    20. PM tabs may not reflect the current status of the user. Example here: http://www.mysticalos.com/images/yahoo/yim_tab_bug.jpg

    Comment by Adam (MysticalOS) — November 4, 2007 #

  40. Another bug: the “automatically sign in when Messenger starts” option does not work (for me anyway, on Leopard).

I’m afraid this version is a real step backward from Beta 1.

    Comment by Mark U. — November 4, 2007 #

  41. I live in east coast USA and chat overseas a lot, mainly Philippines and Romania. Ever since Leopard, this version of Messenger would just shut down or not start up at all…a kernel panic. Many times (but not all the time), I would be chatting and a friend would sign in visibly then BOOM…shuts down and won’t stay up after signing in. I can sign in, but as soon as my messenger list appears, it shuts down. Only if they become invisible again, will Messenger stay up on the Mac. (I’d have log into Messenger on my PC and ask my friend to become invisible, log out of my PC Messenger, then log back in on my Mac….all would be fine as long as they remain invisible.) Or, I would log into Messenger on my Mac, see they are visible on my list just quickly enough before it shuts down. There is some link between the visibility of my buddies and the kernel panic of Messenger shutting down or not staying up. Please fix. Thanks!

I used the Yahoo voice on y PC all the time, now that I have a MAC would be nice if Yahoo got to work on getting voice going in the MAC version, not working on chat rooms, work on the things people use the most, It cant be hard to do since skype has done it. Maybe yahoo should hire some skype programers to work for them since skype knows what they are doing. Yahoo sucks with out the voice.

  51. Hi,

A clean interface for the Beta 2 release of the messenger but i just can’t find the “CALL” button in the messenger. Is this something that i am facing or has Yahoo screwed up big-time somewhere? ‘coz frankly i don’t see the point of all the cosmetic changes and then leaving out voice…that’s the Windows style…

Change the looks…make the product more heavy and keep all the bugs intact so as to fund future releases of the product!

  53. Yahoo can’t be a condsidered a REAL chat provider until VOICE has been implimented. Honestly, that should have happened over two years ago… How is it possible that this feature has not yet been enabled?

Give my a VOICE and I will talk to the world!

    Comment by Monty — November 10, 2007 #

  54. Nive,
You can communicate with Windows users, but our Mac versions are embarrassingly featureless and not really usable for good conversation. I was very surprized last night, when I tried using the latest Yahoo version and found that Voice still not been enabled on the Mac platform.

    Siladitya,
Just double click on the contacts name. This activates the chat window and you can begin typing away.

Let’s hope that Yahoo is close to making Messenger more usable, in the mean time folks, tell you Windows friends to join you on SKYPE. It has both Voice and full screen video options. Works wonderfully.

    Comment by Monty — November 10, 2007 #

  55. no voice chat yet?
Beta1 promised voice chat in Beta2

Here comes Beta2.2 and still no voice chat. I think we should wait another 10 years to get this feature. Or just stick with skype.

    Comment by bazzoola — November 14, 2007 #

  56. All of us MAC users are all waiting on chat, thats what most of the blogs are about, but this product manager that yahoo has, what is her name “SARAH BACON” well shanswers some of these but if you notice anything to do with voice she bypasses. Will not answer a one and give us MAC users some kind of answers. You Know SARAH we have been waiting for voice for so long from yahoo and a lot of us MAC users are tired of waiting. We have heard that voice is coming and all they are is broken promises. If you got voice working yahoo might just make a little more money off of us MAC users, but in the long run now with all the broken promises about voice you are losing money from us MAC users. Maybe yahoo should think about a new product manager that would tell us something on when voice will be available. If you got voice going in yahoo you might be able to get all those MAC users back from SKYPE, but right now SKYPE is so much better. SARAH you are the product manager tell thme what the MAC users want “VOICE”.

  58. Great work!!
The latest build (75170) is much more stable than previous release. Anyway, here’s some issues:
    - Message Archive saves spam message!!
    - Can’t delete entries on the left side (users)
    - Can’t select multiple entries to delete
    - Sometimes, after being connected, empty offline messages windows popped-up.

  59. Hi, sorry if this is duplicate and I missed it somewhere. I cannot seem to sign into my mobile number anymore. Every time I try to do so, Yahoo is logged off, then I get the little message box that says it crashed (and wants me to document what I was doing before the crash). Then when my friends check, they say I am not listed as “mobile” – that I just appear offline.

To be fair, I also “crash” when I just try to log off, but I don’t care about that. I just want to be able to go mobile. Thanks…

  62. Hello!
I downloaded the Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 beta 2 version. But whenever am trying to sign in there is a pop up window which read: The application could not connect to a messenger servers. The servers may be busy, please try again. Am using firefox browser as my default (Safari not uninstalled). Initially I was able to sign in but then after that I can’t. What should I do?

  64. The previous beta of version 3.0 beta 2 worked fine on my mac running 10.5.1 but since I updated to build 78326, I cannot connect to the server unless I select the behind firewall option in the preferences. I can no longer connect to chat rooms either – I go through the whole process of joining a room, but when I click connect, nothing happens.

  66. Wow.. I came here to get ideas about why my Yahoo 3.0 wouldnt start up… After reading all these comments, I don’t think i WANT it to start up.
I think I’ll continue using 2.5.3 until things are looking a LOT more positive.
    How disappointing this is.

  67. This has been a very helpful thread. I was going off the rails trying to get the newest beta to connect. Never could. So, after learning about http://www.oldapps.com here, I downloaded the previous beta from, installed it (on Leopard), and instantly connected.

    Thanks, y’all

  70. I want and need the
Send message to group. Ability to send a message to an entire buddy group. The options to stealth an entire group and invite entire group to conf were both added in beta 2 which is nice. Just missing that last feature.

  77. Sorry to ask this silly question which maybe posted before. I am new and using MacBook with Leopard OS and your Yahoo! Messenger Mac 3.0 Beta2.

Every time I tried to log into YM, it says “The application could not connect to the messenger servers. The servers may be busy, please try again.” I have tried almost everything but failed.

I love using YM on my PC and without any problems.

  81. I just downloaded the beta 2 version YIM. I tried to replace it and got this message “the operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items.” Does anyone know what this means or how to fix it?

The only reason I downloaded the newer version, is I can see other people’s webcams, but they can’t see me on beta 1 version. Is there anything I can do on my end to help them see me on beta 1?

    TIA

  84. Upgraded to the new build 3 and now I can’t receive messages nor does it tell me when I’ve got mail. Running 10.4.11. What’s going on?? Very frustrating for sure.

  85. I upgraded to version 3.0 beta 3 yesterday and it didn’t take long before it repeatedly caused my iMac (Leopard 10.5) to freeze. I restarted a few times to no avail, then decided to do a Leopard update (10.5.2), which I had been hesitant to do as I’ve heard things here and there. The installation process froze, and when I forced a restart, was never able to get my desktop icons to come back after logging in. 24 hours later, I’ve had to do an archive install of Leopard 10.5 all over again, and will stay completely away from Messenger until “Beta” isn’t so beta anymore. Is it me?

    Comment by Enrique — April 1, 2008 #

  86. Why does Yahoo not care about Mac users?
They never update anything for those of us with older systems. I’m so sorry I cant afford a shiny new piece of hardware that can run leopard. I’m happy to have just gotten myself up to OS 10.3. Thing is, once my buddies upgrade, our webcam chat is no longer compatible through YIM. Cant you do better than version 2.5?

  87. Has anyone had problems with their Display Image when using YM for Mac? I’ve been trying to get mine to work and for some reason, it won’t display my picture. It only works when I use the Yahoo avatar. I can see the picture/avatars of my contacts but they can never see my picture; they only see a black screen. I’ve made sure to tick the proper options under preferences and my picture size is not so big. Anyone out there who can help?

  89. Anyone finding that they cannot log on as invisible anymore and then allow people to see them online via stealth settings? Trying to do so results in a “stealth settings error” that is lovely and completely unhelpful. Reinstalling didn’t help. This suddenly happened several weeks after install.

We’re aware of the issue with stealth settings and are working on a fix. Thanks for your patience,
