October 17, 2007 on 9:32 am | In Vista version | 139 Comments

Thanks to everyone for your enthusiastic comments on this blog about the upcoming version of Yahoo! Messenger built specifically for Windows Vista. The team hears you loud and clear, and we can’t wait for launch day either! We are working hard to make a download available for your honest feedback and thorough testing. And of course those who have provided their email address will be the first to know when it is ready.

Some of the things we’ve been working on since the last update include:

- Performance optimization for a smooth and responsive experience
- Integrated feedback system for bug reporting and feature ideas
- Updated tab-based navigation
- Ability to install both versions of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows
on the same computer at once
- Updated visual design for desktop icons and Sidebar gadget
- Vector-based animated emoticons
- Aeroglass window integration
- And some things we’ll tell you about later…

Please stay tuned, and thanks again for your patience.

  3. Thanks for the update. Are there any plans to make use of Yahoo! Widgets with Messenger in the future?
Please can we have updates a little more often: even once a month would be nice!

Quick way to install vista. http://youtube.com/watch?v=FVbf9tOGwno , funny as hell. You need to hook this new software up with the Windows XP OS too. Windows XP is still the most popular OS today

  21. Its been said that 99% of the people who say so and so program doesnt work on Vista is usually having a PEBKAC error.

Want to know what a PEBKAC error is?
    “P”roblem “E”xists “B”etween “K”eyboard “A”nd “C”hair..
Meaning, its an ID10T error as well.. Its not Vistas fault its the people who just want to cause trouble..

  22. I can’t wait for the yahoo messenger for vista to be released. Cause myself and a friend of mine are encountering an issue on the 8.1 yahoo messenger . now when i first started out with vista i was able to open web pages from the messenger like clicking on a link in an im or viewing a profile or opening and viewing my yahoo mail from the messenger. cause i would click a link to open and it would bring it up in the internet explorer. BUT now after a while i’m thinking setting on vista or something to do with the security is blocking it from opening any link through an im on yahoo messenger. But i’m stumped. I’ve tried the widows firewall settings, internet options, and more and i can’t figure out what is blocking it. wheni click to go to a link now. nothing happens. HELP!

  24. Well if this is true, then I’m afraid it will be only for Vista, and it won’t be compatible with the previous version… I may be wrong but from what you are saying here, it’s the only choice.
Vector graphics is not supported on Xp (even if .NET 3 is installed). Xp handles graphics a little bit differently (meaning using bitmaps).
As for installing both version on the same computer, well this means that this new messenger is not compatible with version 8, so if you still have friends who are using version 8 you must install both of them… Kind of wierd, but I don’t see any other reason for this…

If you are running windows vista and have yahoo messenger8.1 installed when yahoo vista messenger comes out and you install it will it have any conflicts with yahoo 8.1 thats already on your machine. will you have a mix of 8.1 and vista messenger or will you have to remove 8.1 before you install vista so you can have a clean in stall

  31. I hope they fix some of the multiple problems with Yahoo Messenger with the update.
Chat windows moving themselves to the front everytime some one uses the buzz sound etc. That’s annoying especially when you are working or chatting with some one else and discover the problem.
    Booters, need I say more.
    Abusers.
And a ton of other problems.

I’m ready to leave Yahoo for another chat client, but I’ll wait until the update before I make that decision.

  32. I can see this conversation between 2 Yahoo executives or whatever: “Hey this people that read blog don’t care about anything else but keep commenting on Yahoo Msgr for Windows Vista. We keep deleting their comments but they keep posting. Let’s post another ‘update’ , this time we’ll name some things, so it seems like we are working on it, so they can shut up for a while” – “You got it. I’ll post it tomorrow”
Of course, I know this comment will be deleted too. Why? Because Yahoo doesn’t like the truth. Do you know when Yahoo msgr for Vista we’ll come out? N E V E R!

    Comment by yahoo — October 20, 2007 #

  36. Well, just seems to be more marketing hype – unless Yahoo has gotten into some serious issues then what is it waiting for? Or did the complete dev team walk out the door (with no documentation)? The current version (8.1) is so buggy I don’t even have it installed and this is coming from someone who has always admired Yahoo and was an avid user. The “dream” unfortunately has turned into a “nightmare”.

You type in a code to hoin just to be greated with a room full or user refused join error….Like i said before putting sarah in charge of this was a big mistake

  40. Yahoo! said the release is getting closer. Through the great-vine i heard it was being released in November. So hopefully it will be released shortly. Yahoo still need to add the chatroom features yet… ive not yet seen no information regarding Chatroom integration.

This Application has been designed with WPF and i believe its coded in .Net

Alot of applications you will find are going to have WPF Integration because of Windows Vista!. There are some very nice Vista Security Settings in VB.Net 2008 which are pretty sweet for the User Control Service.

  51. It is really great to see all the people that swear Vista is the most horrible thing ever, or that millions of messenger users are leaving the service over this.

I’d like to just pop in and say that Vista is quite slick. all my pre-vista software works great. no blue screens, crashes or weirdness of any kind. once i had to put an older game into xp compatibility mode for sound problems (diablo II), but that was related to my crummy soundcard drivers. i got a new soundcard.

I think all the “vista sucks lol” you see on the net are written by people jealous that they can’t seem to hack it, either technically (back away from the computer, n00bs), mentally (we fear change. let’s chase it with pitchforks and burn it!) or financially (why won’t this circa 2007 OS run gracefully, with all the visual effects cranked to max, on my 8 year old computer???)

All I can say is, i went to an xp computer recently and was stunned by the play-school interface, the spyware and security problems, the limitations of the old fashioned explorer and the crummy bitmap graphics.

all you people out there hating on vista… sucks to be you. i hope you feel foolish when in a couple of years you finally get a new computer and get to see what you’ve stupidly been complaining about is all nonsense and in your own small, water-logged little heads.

    Comment by yahoo user — October 22, 2007 #

  52. @ Yahoo User,

Try runnings some benchmark tests with your Vista system and see how they match up with XP, then come back and tell me how wonderful it is.

For example, running on equal systems other than the OS SPECviewperf gives the following results:

    3ds max – 89.9% lower than XP
CATIA – 90% lower than XP
EnSight – 90.9% lower than XP

Do I need to go on? There’s also significant drops in framerates when gaming on Vista, as compared the same game on XP. Try Unreal Tournament for a good example.

And don’t try telling me it’s my computer, lol. I have a 3.4 GHz processor, 2 gigs ram, and an nvidia geforce 880 gts. But at the end of the day this is a blog about Yahoo Messenger, so system specs really mean practically nothing. But next time please do some research and testing of your own before you start talking about something you pretty much know nothing about.

Vista…pretty and flashy? Of course it is, it looksa million times better than XP. Vista…more stable, faster, and higher compatability? Absolutely not, and there’s much proof of that fact.

  55. I prayed to god tonight that i wanted the alpha release when i wake up. I wonder if my prayer will come true!

Cant wait to test this Vista Yahoo Messenger! I still believe the release is in November.

Yahoo! please let me put this across to you. All us XP users want to use it on Windows XP. I dont see why not as WPF is available for XP aswell as other few features. The only thing that will not be compatible is the Vista functionality you have added. Thats the only downside. Apart from that it should work on XP unless you using Vista’s Shell within the Application itself.

hope u can try ya best to work something out though.

Im ready to test it on VISTA though as i have it instaled aswell as Windowblinds 6.0 and the Windows XP Default Theme and the Bliss Desktop Background. It looks well like xp yea..

    Comment by Alyssa — October 23, 2007 #

  57. It has to be done before christmas because it shouldn’t take that long to put out a test version that way u could send error problems if it has any so yahoo will make it better than they want to make the final release the best in the world. One thing they better add sound to the video chat and make it faster than Stickam because yahoo messenger im web cam chat is a lot slower then going on stickam.com. I hope you all take my advice and make sure its the right thing to do. For my idea i deserve a little cash if it all works out.

  59. I love windows Vista, apart from the voice not working in messenger/chat. Vista has been out nearly 1 year and still nothing from yahoo. One year and still nothing working!

One year is less time than any major corporation has ever needed to write a program of any kind.

Not until I actually receive a notification telling me yahoo has it released. When and only when it is on my machine will I believe it is true. I do not for the life of me believe there even is anyone working on this product.

One year has past with all these empty promises and still NADA. That sort of tells us in itself they are doing nothing on it.

An entire multi-location with multiple locations can network their entire corporation main frames and everything to go with it, in less than 1 years time.

To just change script/codes in a messenger build taking one year has got to be a joke.

  61. I thing you should make yahoo more desktop than web based. It’s better than add more beautiful features. You shoud make yahoo messenger a yahoo mail reader with download ability to make people read mail when they are offline. It’s would also have calendar, to do list, remote assistance (later), work-in-lan ability to make yahoo the telephone alternative.

  62. Wonderful to hear that Yahoo is working on Messenger for Vista. I was wondering if the Vista version will have a larger ignore bin . I frequent the Naturists and Nudists , Room :1 . There is a person in there that comes in and abuses the chatters with one id. Then he leaves the room and enters again with another id. This pattern continues on . Chatters do use the ignore feature. This person has over 100+ ids that he uses. So, you can see how some chatters ignore bins would be filled up with this persons ids , alone. Please provide all Yahoo messenger versions with a bigger ignore bin. I have reported several of his ids to Yahoo and nothing ever happens. Could you at least provide chatters with a larger bin ????????

  63. Could you guys speed up a bit with this version? I am running Vista and now messenger 7.0 as the lastest version hanged every time I tried to switch between IMs. And as from today, hooray, I can post exactly 5 posts in a room, give or take some chat errors, and I just get thrown OUT of messenger altogether.
And some of the alternative clients like Elite and Yazak DO run, apparently. I don’t want to switch to those, but it sure is tempting.
Do keep up the good work, stop fussing with gadgets that no one cares about and just get on with it? Jolly good, thanks!

  64. Hi Guys, Ive been with Yahoo since it came out! as with Microsoft, You have all seen the Billions of man hours used to get Vista to half work, Vista today is still not perfect “if it ever will?” I am a Computer Tech, This is a nightmare for gamers too, we have 32 bit XP and Vista and 64 bit XP/Vista, We have NO games that work near 64bit like Xbox or PS3. Then Vista came out (sort of) and everyone thinks everything should work? If M/S came across with some code (that they stole?)”there goes my job application for M/S”, “LOL” then maybe it would help other people make programs for the 32 and the 64 Vista, or the answer is simple! Vista will DIE no matter how many B’$ they throw at it! Vista is such a pig n the poke Even M/S know it! until they bring out Vista 2? not just the hyped up SP2, Then no one will buy it any more! We ” AND THAT incudes M/S” should all Thank Yahoo and everyone working their butts off to try and finish a job half done! I Thank Yahoo for trying to do what others cannot do just now! Yes this will be good when it comes out! but shouting will not make it happen faster! Showing an interest would help? but “GET YOUR FINGER OUT!” will not help the poor guys trying to fix Vista out first, Not too mention the 64 Vista! God, Yahoo staff away home for warm milk with a migraine? Welcome to the so called world of Vista!

Two replies in a day? I must get some work done? I saw your input, I thought it was a wind up? but I can see your Prob! If you “Ignore” them you “Ignore/block” his name, each name has an “IP” number like yours has, It is better to “BLOCK” them then you should be blocking their IP address from getting to you? or should do! If yahoo is doing its job? Or Better still find out ways to get their Ip address? But I never told you that!! Ways and means!

  67. I’m pretty sure Yahoo already has the beta, but it’s available only for a selected group of beta testers. It will be launched to the public (meaning public beta testing) when all the major bugs send by certified beta testers have been solved. I’m not working for them, but this are the normal steps each company must take before launching a product. Releasing the program for the public before solving the problems reported by the certified beta testers can cause considerable damage to the company’s reputation. It’s safer to let the public wait for it, then giving them something full of problems.
I said it in the first place, they shouldn’t have presented so prematurelly the new product.

lol try using voice chat… sorry no joy..

If you ask me its a breakdown of communication between yahoo and microsoft..

No software takes 6-8 months and has a comming soon stamped on it without a beta version released months before hand. I recon we could be in for a very long wait. My advice to anyone who is going to buy a new pc, and uses yahoo a lot.. DONT GET VISTA ! simple as.. Just rushed out, half published junk. Bill Gates has a lot to answer for, so does yahoo…..

imagine all these people with new pcs and vista that cannot use yahoo software because noone thought about is it going to work… so much for yahoo/BT corporations leading the way in internet technology…

  80. What exactly does your ‘coming soon’ really mean? I am bored of that Yahoo messenger for Vista page that saw no change for the past so many months. Any plans of releasing the product/beta sometime in the near future?

  81. Thank you very much, Yahoo! for all of your FREE email, messenging, news, and other services you’ve provided me for the past nine years.

I am a Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit user waiting patiently for your highly anticipated release of the Vista Yahoo! Messenger. Take your time to do it right. I have no problem waiting longer.

I also understand you hired one of the best design firms in the world, Frog Design, in California who helped develop some new Yahoo! Messenger concepts. Kudos once again.

Thanks again for your many generous contributions to the world wide web.

Make it for both users…..I request u…Don’t be too hard on our emotions…think it…then say8 !!!

  85. As long as it is ‘coming soon’ and ‘working hard’ its simple to guess that it is not even ready as a alpha forget beta, forget about the date they don’t even know which quarter.

And 8.1 is much better then Beta 9.

I agree with others here that yahoo messenger V8.1 is NOT compatible with vista, also the new yahoo messenger V9.0 is also not compatible with vista because just like the other versions of yahoo messenger i get no voice or sound while in chat rooms etc.I am using vista ultimate edition and i really like it!I find vista very stable on my self built high spec pc and vista boots up and shuts down much faster than xp.

Come on yahoo sort it out!

  114. Ok. Your originally released the “Yahoo Messenger for Windows Vista” site back in January 2007. It has not changed since, and is still saying “coming soon”. For all we know it is a dead project, as we just have your word that something is happening. Show us some progress in vidcasts or releases. Prove that you have been doing something, and the project is not dead. And explain why it never made the 2007 2nd quarter release date.

    Comment by sofia — November 18, 2007 #

  118. Um…there’s the Windows Compatibility Mode in Vista.

    You try using that yet?

And, for those who have had trouble installing Yahoo Messenger 9.0 due to the Side-by-Side configuration error…

First, you need to check the error log file in Yahoo’s file in Program Files on Vista.

Then, if you see install as a text document, open it. Then scroll down to the bottom of the page.

IF you see it say Could not Self-Register [dll name here]

you need to reboot. Then it should work. But be aware, that once you start it, it may crash. Just restart it and it should work from that point on.

  124. I am kinda perplexed, Yahoo anounced almost a year ago that they were launching yahoo messenger for vista.

Instead of launching what they said they were going to launch. They have launched yahoo messenger for mac instead.

Maybe you should launch what u say u are going to launch instead of launching other applications.

Looks like Yahoo messenger for vista took a back seat to the MAC.

    Comment by jessa — November 30, 2007 #

  136. You guys are horridly impatient. I have been waiting just as long as any of you have. I have seen the news of the Beta since it was first added on Yahoo’s website, and I have waited. And I am still waiting, patiently as can be, as it takes time to build a program from the ground up. If you want this program so bad, YOU go and make it. And then complain about how long it’s taking. They are doing this from scratch, brand new source code to be compatible with Vista, and they have to learn the coding that Vista was made with in order to make it as stable as possible. Until they release it, just shut up and wait.

Thank you, Yahoo! Team for working on a Vista-compatible version. Those of us who know that Vista isn’t such a “buggy horrible messed up OS” like people claim, are anxiously awaiting for this program to use. <3 Keep up the work, and update us as soon as possible.

  137. Yahoo messenger for Vista is going to be released when the next Microsoft Windows comes out. That’s what Yahoo is waiting for They don’t want to release it for Vista anymore Microsoft is working hard to come up with a new Windows

    Comment by Light — December 3, 2007 #

  138. look, i am really beginning to wonder if they have an idea as to how to make it. i will be honest, i couldn’t do it. i have been using yahoo since 1997 and i have been an avid user. we were told one thing and never given an explanation as to why it has taken so long. i think that is what we all want. enough of this coming soon mumbo jumbo, just realease it or give us a date and if none of that is possible, tell us what the hold up is. 8.1 sucks with vista as does most crap on the web, but it would be nice to rely on old faithful (yahoo) to make this experience better. just give us an explanation—a reason—etc…..
