New Build: 8.1.0.239
There is a new build of the Windows version of Yahoo! Messenger now available for download (8.1.0.239). It includes improvements in voice quality and sign-in as well as fixes for minor bugs with the new Microsoft Windows Vista operating system that launches on January 30.
If you’re unsure which version you’re using, go to the Help menu in Yahoo! Messenger and choose “About Yahoo! Messenger.” If your version number is 8.1.0.238 or lower, you should download the latest version.
New Free Voice Feature
Now you can use Yahoo! Messenger to call toll-free U.S. numbers that start with area code 800, 888, 877, or 866*. We added this feature to support a new click-to-call advertising campaign for the scary movie “The Messengers,” opening February 2 in the U.S.
If you’ve never called a land line phone using Yahoo! Messenger’s Phone Out service, calling a toll-free numbers is a great way to try the service for free without having to sign up first. Click a phone number below to make a toll-free call right now. (You must be signed into Messenger and using version 8.1).
Call Tell-Me, a directory of information, people, and businesses: 1-800-555-8355
Happy calling!

*Calling features are available to users only on these versions of Yahoo! Messenger: U.S., Yahoo! Telemundo (in Spanish), Spain, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Singapore.

It’s ridiculous that the mac client doesn’t have the same feature set that the PC does. Please fix! it’s been 3.0 beta 1 for ages and before that

Hi everyone, Please keep your comments on topic to the post.
I don’t have an update on the Mac client right now but I hope to publish an article soon with some updates. Thanks for your patience!

Hi Sarah can you please explain why im getting Disconnected from the room. Im not sure if its anything to do with that new Messenger Vulnerability which Torseq Tech posted to you but every room i go in i get knocked off and have to reconnect to Yahoo Messenger im on a 10MB Cable Connection and this should not be happening to me. Also i noticed that the Chatroom Bots like to fool you by typing in White Text and another color.

Here’s some bugs I’ve found in v8.1.0.239 thus far…
1) Chat Word Filter set to ‘None’ is broken. Meaning if you set it to ‘None’, exit Y!M, reopen it and go to chat, the word filer will be on regardless of it being set to the ‘None’ setting. Workaround: Edit filter1.enc in the Yahoo! install directory, and remove everything inside and save it.
2) When you minimize chat windows to the taskbar, the window doesn’t ‘flash’ when receiving new chat messages. No workaround.
3) Multiple bugs in the skinning engine (UI), which causes some skins to appear wrong or messed up, or to ‘flash’ in chat rooms and IM windows. Some skins aren’t updated for Y!M v8.1 yet, classic skin seems to be somewhat incompatible with the ‘Plugins’ bar on the main Y!M window. No workaround
4) ‘Ignore anyone who is not on my Messenger List’ is broken as you already know. Workaround: Turn it off for now.
5) YMSG ‘ghost logins’ issue. Meaning people appear to ’sign in’ and ’sign off’ whom aren’t on your buddy list. Seems to be triggered by going into chat rooms.
6) Some plugins cause script errors. Example: Start the iTunes plugin with iTunes open, and play a couple songs. Then exit iTunes, and Yahoo’s iTunes plugin will give script errors.
Those are all for now. If I find anymore, I’ll log them and post them here ASAP. =) Thanks.

I’m getting kicked offline when in chatrooms all the time as are the rest of my friends. I think I’ll just have to purchase the solution from Torseq Tech [ytkpro dot com] to protect me until you guys address the issue.

As you can see Sarah, a lot of us Mac users feel unimportant. We’ve heard of some news from the San Francisco expo, but that’s just news, text and images. We want it in our hand.
It’s great that Yahoo! now has a Mac team that really does something. If it’s too early for a stable update, at least keep us “entertained” with updates on the Mac version.
Thank you

I have the version of Yahoo Messenger that was released prior to this one, Is it going to be automatically updated ? Or do I have to download the setup file again and go through the entire installation process ?
Comment by Goutam Nath — January 27, 2007 #
Ever since the java version on chat been removed the chat rooms,
ChatterBox,
ShowBiz Central,
and The Press Box
under the Voice Chat category don’t work.
A messege pops up saying “Unable to create room.”
I am not trying to create a room, since they are in the room list!
Comment by Chris — January 27, 2007 #
When I enter a chat room the voice/mic automatically turns on. I would like the messenger to remember next time I enter a chat room if I have voice/mic off, to stay off.
Comment by Dave — January 27, 2007 #
Dave, try YTK Lite or YTK Pro as it has an option to turn off auto voicing. =)

Seriously, why is the Mac version of Yahoo Messenger sooooo far behind in feature set to it’s Windows counterpart? Get with it Yahoo.
Comment by Robocub — January 27, 2007 #
Thank you, YM Blog !
At last, it is nice to be told clearly by Yahoo what the latest version NUMBER is – and even moreso to be given some idea of “what’s new” in it.
This blog fills a previously massive P.R. gap. Thanks again.

Hey!
Thanks for this amazing version of Y! IM….Will the 800 free calling work for countries other than US? Means if we call from somewhere like Pakistan to a US 800…will it work free?

Yahoo phishing is everywere, Yahoo trys to prevent it with login seals and other ways.
The advisory I am makeing is if someone falls for a phishing attack.
If I got my account stolen by someone phishing or just a bad person, all they would have to do is change my password and zip code then the link Yahoo gives for forgot password would not work.
Yahoo lets people change the zip code but that is a major question for if you forgot your password or if your password has been changed. Yahoo should not let people change there zip code on there account information page. or Yahoo should not ask people for there zip code if they forgot there password or if it been changed.
You can’t get your account back if it has been stolen becouse zip code problem.
If yahoo fixes the zip code problem there will be hundreds of less phishing pages aimed at Yahoo users.

I’m sick of yahoo automatically installing the toolbar every update. This is rediculous! it prompts me if i want to install it and every update, I click no – don’t install it. Like clockwork, you guys install it anyways, change my home page to yahoo.com and hijack the IE search. This should be illegal! NOW – as icing on the cake, there is no uninstall in the add/remove programs for the toolbar, even though it’s listed. I’m so sick of these websites forcing software on it’s users…

Well, I was able to uninstall it, once i unchecked the toolbar from being displayed in IE. The uninstall went VERY quickly for a 53MB application – so I wonder if it was actually uninstalled because it’s still trying to hijack my search utility in IE for it to search yahoo….
Comment by Ken — January 29, 2007 #
I never use the installer from Yahoo! Messenger homepage. It just sucks
Use the one from http://www.softpedia.com – no toolbar and internet explorer hijack or whatever. And also you can install it offline, because it contains the whole application inside.
Both are made by Yahoo!. Why don’t you post a link to the offline installer for us on the downlaod page?
Comment by Lucky — January 29, 2007 #
the reason is because they want to be devious and install things when we clearly mark that we don’t want the software. This way, we can think of their company as devious and only use it because work uses it to talk to oversees programmers. The added bonus is that since I feel this way, I will never purchase anything of theirs, no upgrade on the music player, anything. Thank you Yahoo!
Comment by Ken — January 30, 2007 #
Sajid. Yes, you can call US 800 numbers from anywhere in the world. Just be sure to put a “+1″ in front of the number.
Comment by GD — January 31, 2007 #
Are yahoo users can call the 800… in Canada too? or it’s just for those of USA.
Comment by alitoba74 — February 2, 2007 #
Hi alitoba74,
If you’re using a version of Messenger that offers Yahoo! premium voice services, you can use this toll-free call feature. The eligible versions are listed at the end of the blog post. The Canadian version of Messenger does not offer premium voice services so you would not be able to use the feature. Thanks,
Sarah Bacon

You say that the 1-800 feature is a good way to check out the phone out feature for free. However, I haven’t been able to figure out anyway to call a toll-free number without giving you $10 in prepaid credit to get signed up (other than possibly the numbers you included in the blog).
Comment by Chris Sumpter — February 3, 2007 #
Actually, I can’t even dial the numbers in the blog without signing up for Phone Out. So what happened to “If you’ve never called a land line phone using Yahoo! Messenger’s Phone Out service, calling a toll-free numbers is a great way to try the service for free without having to sign up first”?

How come you can’t leave your own voice on your voicemail. Is that ever going to happen or will we have that dull drone sound forever?

Question… When will Yahoo Messenger for Mac for GOLD?
It has been in Beta 1 forever…
Will it ever catch up to the windows version?
It seriously needs to go toe to toe with Windows… I’m waiting.
Please someone tell me.

The outgoing rates to international destinations is ridiculously high and Yahoo! has done nothing at all since last 1 year or so to bring the rates down. I have already switched to another service (for making international calls) that allows me to call international phones at much cheaper rates and better quality than yahoo!.

I purchased a new computer that has windows vista on it. I d/l the newest version of yahoo thats supposed to be compatible with the windows vista but I am still unable to use voice in chatrooms. Still works on my windows xp. Is there some other upgrade or tool that needs to be used now?
Comment by Nicole — February 21, 2007 #
I too, am running Windows Vista Home Premium. And, I too am noticing the same problem as Nicole (previous blog). The next version (Yahoo Messenger made for Vista).. will that next version fix that voice problem in chat rooms? And when will that next version be available to the public anyway?

How do I turn off the re-direct to yahoo search page in IE7? Each time I try to do an address bar search, I’m sent to a www9. site (yahoo results). I have tried to reset the default to google etc. but it only works in the search bar. I hate being hyjacked! any ideas?
Comment by Brian — April 15, 2007 #
Hi Brian,
When you’re in IE7, there’s a drop down menu arrow next to the magnifying glass that sits next to the search box in the upper right corner. Click on that menu and choose “Change Search Defaults…”. I think changing settings in there will help clear up your problem.

Hey Sarah,
I was chatting with a YM CS staff earlier today because I called a 1-866 tollfree number with YM (I have both PhoneIn and PhoneOut accounts). I got a “the number you dialed cannot be reached from your calling area” message.
The YM CS staff I chatted with said that Yahoo Voice does not support tollfree numbers. Isn’t that interesting when you (Sarah) had written this January about calling tollfree numbers with YM?
I told the YM CS staff that that isn’t true because I’ve been calling various tollfree numbers before. I now realize that YM doesn’t work with all tollfree numbers.
To re-prove to myself and demonstrate to YM CS staff that YM is capable of calling tollfree numbers, I dialed 1-866-246-7262 and 1-888-723-8881. Both calls were successful (i.e., got connected to the company I’m calling).
I’m using Yahoo US version 8.1.0.401.
Out of curiosity, I dialed the two numbers you mentioned in your article:
1-800-899-9619 – Not successful. I got this message “This isn’t valid. Please check your listing and try your call again.”
1-800-555-8355 – Went through!
So, this further supports my observation that YM works with some tollfree numbers but not with others. I have a list of other tollfree numbers that doesn’t work with YM.
Could you, Sarah, explain why there are tollfree numbers that can be dialed from YM and other tollfree numbers that can’t?
Comment by Mattie — July 26, 2007 #
Hi Mattie – Sorry to read that our customer care did not know about the ability to call toll-free numbers. Thanks for setting them straight.
That 800-899-9619 was set up for a movie promotion (The Messengers). The movie is long gone out of theaters so they probably disabled the phone line. Sorry about that!

Hi Dear Sir / Madam,
When I use the Yahoo Messenger to call the USA by the tollfree number, there the PC-Phone call can work well but it limits for 30 minutes only. So I have to redial it if the time is longer 30 minutes.
I would like to set my call longer than 30 minutes. Would you please let me know if it can support and how to do it?
Thank you.
With Best Regards,
Dominic

Toll free number is an essential reinforcement especially when starting up a business. This helps in building up professional image and customer support. This is also the very cost effective technique in advertising and branding.
