You Asked, We Listened: Introducing the Latest Version of Yahoo! Messenger

November 29, 2011 on 8:10 pm | In Uncategorized | 139 Comments

We are excited to let you know that a new version of Yahoo! Messenger for Windows is now available! Here at Yahoo!, we strongly value our users’ opinions and have been paying attention to your feedback and suggestions. This new release incorporates what you have been telling us; we think these new features will help you communicate even better with the people who matter most to you!

Tabbed IMs – One of the most highly sought after features! We heard you loud and clear that being able to effectively organize and manage your conversations is important. No more clutter or juggling – with tabbed IMs, you get to chat with all your friends from one easy and convenient window..

Improved Spam Management – We hate spam as much as you do, and our battle against it is an ongoing one. If you have been receiving invitations from random strangers, you can now ignore multiple add requests with a single click.

New Social Games – Level up on how you are keeping in touch with your friends and family. With over 70 exciting games such as Backyard Monsters, Township and ourWorld, Yahoo! Messenger lets you chat and play games with friends at the same time! Get your friends involved by sharing your game activities and play-status so that friends can join your game and you can join theirs.

Easy Access to Recent Contacts – You may have over a hundred Messenger friends, but most of us chat with only a handful – and usually the same handful – on a regular basis. Your recent contacts now appear at the top of your contact list, so it’s quick and easy to reach out to your regular IM friends.

Smart Archiving – Looking up an old IM conversation has never been easier. Your chat history is now categorized by friends, with your most recent conversations showing up first. What’s more, your IM conversations can be retrieved from any PC or web browser where you have signed in to Yahoo! Messenger.

Snap and Share – Add more color to your chat conversations! In addition to photos, you can now take a quick snap shot of your computer screen and easily share it with your friends.

Quick Access to All Emoticons – Yahoo! Messenger has always had some hidden emoticons that weren’t available on the emoticon menu, which meant you had to memorize their shortcuts. Now you no longer have to rack your brain to remember the shortcut for the monkey emoticon (it’s, for those keeping score). The emoticon menu gives you quick access to all the emoticons, and even remembers the ones you use most frequently!

Now in Romanian too – Finally, we value all our users around the world and try as much as we can to deliver a truly local experience. With this new release, millions of users in Romania will now be able to use Yahoo! Messenger in Romanian by selecting it from the language box on the sign-in page!

Get the latest Yahoo! Messenger today at http://messenger.yahoo.com, we hope you’ll enjoy the new version as much as we do!

As with any new release, we want to hear all about your experience — what’s working well for you and what’s not. Try it today and let us know what you think through the “Send Feedback” link on the Help menu.

Yahoo! Messenger Team

***UPDATE***

It’s come to our attention from the Yahoo! Messenger Community that hackers are intentionally exploiting a newly-discovered security vulnerability affecting Messenger for Windows. At Yahoo!, we take security very seriously and we greatly appreciate those who flagged this to us. We are actively working to completely resolve this issue.  In the interim, we have pushed a fix that will protect users against this vulnerability. Messenger users need to log out of Messenger and then back-in for the fix to take effect.

  1. This looks great! Thanks for the tabbed IM windows!

  2. I am truly glad to read that Yahoo! Messenger it’s at last avalable with romanian UI language. It’s something that could be done years ago, but It’s never too late and in my opinion the translation in a local language it’s a sign of respect for the users.

  3. is there an option to get rid of the recent contacts group? if yes, how do you do it?

  4. Since a few versions back, the video sharing function doesn’t work correctly. I can see it on the screen and hear it but the image is frozen. Also, when my friend updates her picture, I still see the old one. I have uninstalled IM reinstalled, reinstalled Adobe Flash. REALLY FRUSTRATED. It’s been about a year and I was hoping that this version fixed the issue. Any help or suggestions?

Really love the new emoticon stuff though!

  6. Appears to be a problem.

If you had the UK language selected before (and hence downloaded) then you upgrade, lots of menu options don’t appear correctly, entries in the preferences are missing, and it crashes, the new smiley selector doesn’t work etc.

Choosing the US language fixes it.

Is it only the Windows users you pay attention too? I know a many Mac user has been asking for some kind of update for YEARS! We never hear a word about anything, not even to tell us to forget it, the product is dead. Hearing that from Yahoo, would be better than nothing at all.

  22. Alex, I don’t think that is a bug. I think that is how they intended it to work for example you now get a preview of the smiley before you send it so you know what you are sending just in case you screw up.

Also why is there no option to customize Recent Contacts?? I mean I know damn well I’m not going to get an answer but god damn how do you put in a new feature but not give any customization options for it??

  25. In Yahoo! Messenger 11.5, I choose “When I receive message minimize the message window to the taskbar” and “Open new message window in tab”. When I’m chatting with Mr. A, then Mr. B chat with me, the window creates a new tab and minimize to taskbar.

Expected: I choose those 2 options above, then when new message tab appears, my message windows doesn’t minimize.

  52. Hi! Who translated the software into Romanian? The translation is good, but some terms could be chosen better, I mean to chose another terms: “tab” (In English and Romanian) could be translated with “filă” (available in Chrome, Firefox, Opera), BUZZ could be translated with „Bâz” because it’s an onomatopoeia. It’s a weird thing that some texts seems to be translated with a machine translation (simple terms not translated, and in other texts are translated that “terms”). And a very bad thing that some words are written without Romanian diacritics, which is lack of professionalism.

  73. Yahoo just released 11.5. A friend sent me an SMS message and I had her chat box up and the message came in fine. I closed the chat box then right clicked her name to send back a message and the SMS message doesn’t work. I logged out and back in and clicked it again and it worked. Then closed the chat box and right clicked her name and then SMS and it wouldnt work. So I called her and asked her to send an SMS message to my yahoo. The sound played but the message did not come in. So then I decided to try the new history which I turned on but had never looked at. None of her SMS messages show up period but the ones I sent her show up. Did anyone beta test out this version? Bottom line it appears if I am in yahoo I can’t receive any SMS messages unless I have their chat box open first. Can we please fix these issues and quickly.

  76. Seems Yahoo doesn’t like my comments about the new messenger as they keep deleting them.

Obviously the programmers can’t handle criticism.

So here’s another problem with the new release.

The Emoticons don’t show up, nothing but a blank white screen.

For christs sake Yahoo, get your act together and don’t release anything as a full version when it’s in fact a BETA.

    Your typo is still there in your coding too, number is spelt N U M B E R not N U B M E R.

And again, get of the Recent Contacts, it’s not needed it’s a pain in the arse!

Would like to know seriously who asked for tabbed conversation windows???? I doubt anyone did which is why everyone is heading to their preferences to change it back to how it should be.

Lastly, why fix something when it’s not broken?

    Comment by yahoodude — December 13, 2011 #

Like fixing the “Ignore Chat Invites” so that it actually does something, a way to disable “Imvironments”, cleaning out the bots from the chatrooms so real people can use them and bring back the old profile pages, you know, the ones that were actually useful before yahoo decided to trash them without telling anybody that they were going to do it.

    Comment by GS — December 17, 2011 #

  86. Why don’t you stop people from locking chatrooms? Shouldn’t that be part of your responsibility to chatters? The Yahoo help site & report abuse does no good. Travis J. Bourque & i.gidget have been locking rooms for months, keeping chatters out of tehir favorite chatrooms. Look at 40’s Love:3 & 40’s Love:7. What good is your abuse report pages if nothing is ever done to stop this? You don’t even ban the locking bots that fill up the rooms, how silly is that?

  97. When are you going to make a new MAC version of Yahoo Messenger?
The old version is really ANCIENT legacy… with quite some annoying bugs (like profile picture, choppy webcam feature that crashes alot, failing file transfers and more)
Why you don’t make a porting at least for the Mac Intel platform? Shouldn’t be that hard.
You know, it’s not just a Windows and iPhone world out there…

  99. with the new version 11.5 SMS messages are not received unless the chat box is open nor do they appear in archive history from any user who sends the SMS message so only one side of the conversation exists. If messenger is open and no chat boxes open the sound plays telling you you received a message but no message actually shows. When can we expect a fix. This is very annoying.

  100. Is the conversation history stored locally in this version of Yahoo Messenger or is it still stored online on Yahoo’s servers?

    Comment by tsean — January 6, 2012 #

  104. if you set your messages to minimize to the task bar then that is when SMS messages are not delivered. Also they do not store in history either. The SMS message plays the sound to let you know it came in but it does not show. If you change your message to show the message window then your SMS message will show when it is delivered but it still does not store the message in history. I also do not have the show messages from background windows at bottom right of screen checked… Very annoying

  105. I don’t like the new YM because the archive it’s saved online. And if anyone finds out my psw will have full access to my archive.
Why don’t you put an option that let’s you to save the archive on your computer?

Anyway, I’m still using version 10. No updates for me with the mentioned “feature”.

    Sorry, Yahoo!

  113. If one chooses that upon receiving a new message the window is to minimize to taskbar, this happens also when one of the contacts in your current I`m types.

Imagine this : Have 3 contacts in 3 tabs. You chat to contact 1 when contact 3 decides to write you something => chat window minimizes.

This was allright in the previous version when there was a chat window/discussion but with the introduction of tabbed chat I think this work a little bit hectic.

  114. “Not found
The page you were looking for doesn’t exists.”
    (from a blank profile page)
Even a 3rd grader could spot the grammar issues with that!
That is just one example of what is wrong with Yahoo products. Shoddy design, poorly thought through, and done mainly to try to be the same features as what “the other hot site” uses. Yahoo used to be a good product, LONG AGO. Get the pornbots out of the chat rooms, get rid of the roomlocker flooders, and MAYBE if its not too late, some people might start using your products again. Profiles,, , we dont need a myspace/facebook clone, not everyone is into social networking and letting everyone on their buddy list know when they picked their nose! A profile is about that person, not thier friends, and running conversations of public chat. Cloud computing is NOT for everyone, let the USER decide where they want chat history stored. I see you deleted my previous post, that means you read it, hopefully you will pass on my thoughts that are no longer there.

First of all, when i try to import the archives from previous version i get an error message, so now i don’t have access to my conversation history. And second, i want to be able to save my archive on my computer not on yahoo’s servers.

  122. “You Asked, We Listened”???????? Then how about fixing the problem you have with the bots. The reason they are still in there even with captcha is it only takes a human once to log them in & then he can be gone about his business. All you need is a boot option that if a user gets added by enough members in a room they get booted out. There is an online petition you can sign at http://www.change.org/petitions/yahoo-inc-fix-the-bot-problem-in-their-chat-rooms-with-a-boot-option-2 Why don’t you really listen to the people yahoo.

There is NOTHING wrong with my interenet connection. I tried the troubleshoot option but that wasn’t successful. I also tried changing connection settings as reccommended and that failed as well. Is there is anything else I can do?

  126. BT and Yahoo have now managed to stop me using Outlook Express as my preferred e-mail software by blocking my access unless I use YM. Up until now they have only made the system run very slowly so I have persisted with OE.
I use another supplier for my charity work so can use OE without a problem or speed reduction on their system. Seeing all your comments it seems that I was correct to use OE rather than YM.
It would appear that I will have to change suppliers to get a decent service. Comments anyone?

  130. The Recent Contacts facility is useful, for some, and for some purposes. For me it is terribly annoying – to have my Messenger filling up with the name of every moron that hails me. Constantly having to get rid of all these cretinous ‘Recent Contacts’ after I’ve been in a Yahoo chatroom is a task every bit as arduous and distasteful as checking over a dog for ticks.
You can select the ‘group’ and then go to Contacts/Manage Groups and delete the group – but Yahoo won’t let you. Yahoo, I think you haven’t been listening hard enough; perhaps you only got the first part and then rushed off while we were still in mid-sentence?! You make a very serious mistake in imposing this hideous trash-catcher on me. You should give me the means to unburden myself of it. I should be able to get rid of, or hide, this ill-thought ‘innovation’. If I could govern it, rather than it embarrassing me, then we might say you had been ‘listening’, Yahoo. Recent Contacts in present form is a bad idea because of the privacy/user control issues that it creates. It’s essential that it be optional, not mandatory. Change it would you, please? Here is my opportunity to say, by the way, that the artist who made the Yahoo emoticons was and is the original master emoticon-maker of this and last century[-x and it is good, yes, good, that his/her noble work is now fully available on the latest Messenger[-(

    Comment by Nathan Hall — February 3, 2012 #

  131. To summarise, to add my voice: PLEASE REMOVE (or re-configure, as per above) the mandatory RECENT CONTACTS ‘group’.

It is useful only to people who have exceedingly long lists. To everyone else it is unnecessary work, endlessly deleting names one does not know or like and did not ask for from one’s private personal list of contacts.

    Comment by Nathan Hall — February 3, 2012 #

  132. rather have chat archive back to old way by dates — can remember about when something was said or done to look up past info. but having to go back day by day thru all chat to get to it is crap. and with new messenger i lost all archive prior to first part of dec 11 which is bullcrap.
On recent contracts put on it when u right click it a line where u can delete all in it. Just headache it creating a new sub group n making it longer for me to go down to my sub groups to find someone .

  137. Dear Yahoo,

I used to use Yahoo Messenger on Windows 98.

I stumbled on this while browsing and might I say, congratulations on the tabs. I’ve been using Pidgin and Kopete, which has had this functionality and no spam, spyware, or obnoxious advertising for years.

I guess while you were busy stuffing Messenger for Windows full of useless crap that nobody ever asked for, in order to justify a dependency on Adobe Trash (which is there to run obnoxious advertisements), functionality like tabs, which must have taken you an entire 10 lines of code to implement must have just slipped your mind.

This is typical of proprietary software. It keeps getting larger and full of more malicious crap while it misses the little things.

    Yours truly,

Someone who still has a Messenger account to use with Kopete because some people refuse to join the 21st century and use XMPP.
