Farewell – Yahoo Web Messenger – Nov 1, 2011

The decision to “end-of-life” a product is never an easy one — especially when a product has been well-received by customers and members of the original team that created it still remember all the blood, sweat and tears that went into it. But, there comes a time when certain products reach the natural end of their “life” and in the case of Yahoo! Web Messenger, we will be discontinuing support for it after November 1, 2011. We’re doing this for two main reasons:
- First and foremost, now you can continue to use a Web-based IM experience in Yahoo! Mail: Initially when we launched Yahoo! Web Messenger it was quite popular with a number of folks who didn’t want to install the Messenger client on their computer. Students, travelers and people who frequently used loaner computers understandably didn’t want to bother with the download, but still wanted an easy way to stay connected to their IM friends. Yahoo! Web Messenger was a perfect solution. But, thanks to the latest version of Yahoo! Mail launched earlier this year, users can now easily IM and SMS with Yahoo! Messenger in Yahoo Mail with only a web browser, centralizing their emails, IMs, and SMS messages in one easy location. This feature in Yahoo! Mail made Yahoo! Web Messenger somewhat obsolete.
- Consolidate resources to deliver a best-in-class instant messaging experience: Today Yahoo! supports Messenger on the Windows PC desktop client, Mac and mobile and tablet devices, including iPhone, iPad, Android smart phones and RIM devices to name a few. We’re seeing an increasing number of users on these products and we’re working hard to continually improve and enhance the innovative aspects of Messenger like gaming and video calls. By discontinuing support of Yahoo! Web Messenger, we’ll be able to reallocate resources to develop cool, new features for Messenger.
For all of the Yahoo! Web Messenger users out there, we encourage you to download the desktop client and see some of the enhanced features like chat with your Facebook friends. For those of you who don’t want to (or can’t) download Messenger on your computer, click here to find out how to use Yahoo! Messenger in Yahoo! Mail.

Feeling sorry for you but this is what I expect. Yahoo is losing its significant market share because it can’t compete with others. Just give some examples: Yahoo Mail v.s Gmail, Yahoo Messenger (with VOIP) v.s Skype, Yahoo 360 (this one was already closed) v.s Facebook … The only successful product that you have now is Flickr.
Talking about messenger, you have a poor development plan and support. While the Windows version is growing by adding more and more features and support, the Mac version is still in Beta stage for years.

Compare Messenger to IRQ? Right, no comparison. Messenger is one of the best products Yahoo has and they think they can “capture” social networking advantages by forcing users to go through a browser.
I have been shifting more activity to gmail even with the new Yahoo format which I do find acceptable. Yahoo makes the kind of decisions that say they don’t want my business.

Very disappointing that this service is going away. The Mail interface to YIM is very poor at best, yet you’ve provided no stand along clients to people that choose not to shell out big money for terrible OSes from Microsoft!
Please recognize that the web interface to YIM is the ONLY method to connect from alternative OSes (like GNU/Linux), and by eliminating this service, you are effectively cutting off loyal users!
It baffles me that in day and age, with competing services available from other vendors, that Yahoo would do anything to risk driving away their users.

I am very disappointed that Yahoo has chosen to eliminate the web interface without providing a useful alternative. The mail interface to YIM is very very poor, and extremely limited in features and functionality.
Simply recommending that everyone install the desktop client foolishly ignores that fact that Yahoo has only provided a developed client for Windows computers! Many people do not wish to spend big money to purchase and install terrible operating systems from Microsoft!
Please recognize that the web interface provides the ONLY means for users of other OSes (such as GNU/Linux) to connect to YIM. Yahoo is effectively driving away that entire userbase with this decision. I’m am surprised in this day and age of strong competition from other vendors that Yahoo would blindly ignore their loyal users in this fashion.

When I had discovered your Yahoo Web Messenger I had notice that it was limited to what YIM was designed for.
When there were issues w/ the current YIM I went to access it @ Yahoo Web Messenger.
@ Yahoo Web Messenger I could access my IMs as well as reply or forward IMs thoroughly there to those already on my contact list.
It’s obvious that not enough users were either aware or utilizing it like the current YIM 11.
Maybe if the staff had incorporated other features it would have received the much needed attention which it required to keep it afloat & on the Internet.

I keep on receiving an IM from someone called bendy_curlygurly. I do not know who this person is & I do not want to receive any more. They are unsolicited and I have ask not to be IM by anyone. I do not want the IM feature if I am going to receive unsolicited IMs. How can I get rid of it? I have done everything Y!A have suggested Thank you.

For me, this is a welcome change. It seems to me that this is the same as gmail. I really can’t compare the two though because I haven’t used the yahoo mail chat yet but I am sure that they are equally effective for the purpose.
