More Goodness for Messenger Users on Android

April 22, 2011 on 8:37 am | In Features, Mobile, Uncategorized | 43 Comments

Since the first release of Yahoo! Messenger App for Android, we have been working hard to improve performance and have released a series of new features, intended to offer you the best in class IM experience on your Android mobile phone.

For those who aren’t already aware, here are some exciting features we would like to call out.

FREE VOICE & VIDEO CALLING: Why limit yourself to just IMs? Yahoo! Messenger for Android now supports FREE voice and video calling, so you can feel like you are right there as you connect with your friends and family, wherever they may be in the world. To activate this functionality, be sure to install the Yahoo! Messenger Voice & Video Add-on in addition to the Yahoo! Messenger App for Android.

FACEBOOK CHAT INTEGRATION: We understand your friends and family are everywhere and connecting with them should be simple and easy. With that in mind, we worked on integrating Facebook Chat within Messenger so that you can send and receive messages from your Facebook friends in real-time while you are on the go.

STAY SIGNED IN: Stay signed in to your chats on your desktop PC computer and Android mobile phone at the same time. You get notified about new messages where you are active which means you never have to miss a conversation.

We hope you will enjoy these new features as much as we do. Try them out and let us know what you think!

  6. How about a move to SD option? I’d likely consider this app more seriously if there was one.

  7. Just back from reading android market comments… I am not inspired to take the leap. Shouldn’t you also indicate that this is a BETA as well?

  9. I know this isn’t the place to suggest anything but I tried every link and can’t find a way to directly send feedback or suggestions. You should make that easier to do.

Yahoo! Messenger for Vista was a beautiful application and I think that considering the Windows 7 is a lot better and uses the same technology. It would be nice to see Yahoo! Messenger for Vista become Yahoo! Messenger 12. I think that you could implement a wayyy better look and theming experience on Yahoo! Messenger and update it to where people won’t get tired of using it. I’ll be honest. I’m not fond of using Yahoo! Messenger much anymore because the look isn’t up-to-date and the speed hasn’t been as good as it could be.

  10. Hello,

I can’t use Yahoo Messenger on my Android devices anymore and that happened since yesterday. Also, I can no longer locate the Yahoo Messenger app on Android market. I even tried to download it from the Yahoo! homepage without success. Also, I get this weird message when I try to download the app via Yahoo! homepage – “This item is not available on your carrier”. What’s that supposed to mean? I never had this issue before. What’s going on?

    My devices:
Xperia Arc – Android Gingerbread 2.3
    Xperia X10 – Android Eclair 2.1

    Thank you.

  11. Seriously? An update to the Android version?
How about updating the desktop app too. Yahoo! Messenger for Mac is still in Beta since June 28, 2006, latest version is 3.0.1 Beta (build 235554) from March 26, 2010. Also the Windows version is still in Beta (11.0.0.1751 Beta – November 16, 2010). Yahoo! Mail also Beta. I don’t know how this could happen, but I’m tired of waiting. Also the Desktop app seems very outdated to me, the same look, just minor changes like that stupid Facebook chat integration, message archives on the Yahoo!’s servers instead of my PC, not even giving an option to the user to choose how he would want to store his archives. I think killing Yahoo! Messenger for Vista was really a bad idea. It was elegant and clean and it was well integrated with Windows Vista. I think you guys should resurrect the project again instead of borrowing the design of it to the smartphone apps and mail.

  12. I don’t get notifications of new messages on my android phone.

  13. A small problem the Y!M app disables the phones ability to sleep when it’s running so as a result the battery dies very quickly, about 8 hours on my phone which sucks since I’m used to going 3+ days before needing to charge. So it would be nice to have a nice easy button or something to shut down Y!M instead of having to go into the settings to do it (going in the settings to shut down on app does that make any sense to anyone). Also while Y!M is running there should be a visible indicator in the notifications bar.
Nice to see though that when it’s in the background it does not use up much bandwidth about 4mb in the 8 hours on my phone while Y!M was in the background idle.

Another thought is with the android phones being able to do so much already, texting, sending pics videos etc. and not to mention some pretty awesome apps to handle voip, go sms pro awesome etc. I just can’t imagine Y!M for android (or any other chat program for that matter) being all that useful or really wanted on the android.

What made Y!M for pc in the past great was the chat rooms, for actually just chatting with individual friends it failed, far better alternatives were always available but the chat rooms. Unfortunately throw in years of booters and tons of spam bots and what is either an inability or unwillingness to do anything about those two programs has left Y!M chat rooms undesirable. Now if you folks could fix this problem, forums have and it’s fairly easy and offer chat room access on android now that would be interesting.

For now I’m uninstalling Y!M for android, it doesn’t offer anything new, actually with go sms pro, friend stream and the facebook app (even facebook own built in texting) Y!M for android offers a whole lot less, add the battery drain.

  21. I used to use y!messenger for my main chat app many many years ago.

I have stopped using it and am using google chat instead partly because of SPAM. I do not get unsolicited attempts to make contact by spam-bots using the google service. I used to use messenger on my blackberry and it was an annoying process to block unwanted contacts. I only open it up in my yahoo mail now but since most of my friends have migrated away the only contacts I get are spam-bots. The whole feel of Y!Messenger is now shaky in association.

  38. Loved the Messenger app on my original Galaxy Tab, but am wondering when you will update it to support Honeycomb devices like the Galaxy Tab 10.1. It seems the screen size would allow for a great user experience. Count me in as a beta tester…

  40. The Messenger Android app has a colon – “:” – at the end of the title under the app icon, so instead of seeing “Messenger” I see “Messenger:”. Please fix this in the next update – it looks annoying. Xperia X10 (Android 2.3).
