It’s here! The new Yahoo! Messenger Beta is now available for download. Yahoo! Messenger Beta makes it fun and easy to share, connect, and play with friends and family – no matter where you are in the world.

We’re excited to tell you about all the great new features in this release:

DO MORE THAN JUST IM – PLAY SOCIAL GAMES WITH FRIENDS
Instant messaging is great but it takes more than just IM to stay in touch with the people who matter most to you. The new Yahoo! Messenger Beta offers more ways than ever before to connect (and have fun!) with friends and family. Not only can you instant message, text, and make voice and video calls, you can now play social games right within Yahoo! Messenger.

  • Play socially – Play some of the most popular social games with your friends, starting with offerings from Zynga, Elex, and OMGPOP. Games include:
    • Fishville and Mafia Wars from Zynga – Coming soon
    • Balloono, Pool, Draw My Thing from OMGPOP
    • Happy Harvest & Happy Manor from Elex
  • Get your friends involved – Share your game activities and play-status so that friends can join your game and you can join theirs.

MANAGE ALL YOUR SOCIAL NETWORKS FROM ONE PLACE
Having trouble keeping up with different groups of friends across various social networks? Yahoo! Messenger Beta brings together your social experiences from across the web and provides a single destination to see what your friends are doing or let them know what you are up to.

  • Keep up with friends wherever they are – View, comment on and like updates from Yahoo! Pulse, Flickr, Facebook, Twitter, and more, all from one place, right within Yahoo! Messenger.
  • Post one status to multiple social networks – Share your Messenger status simultaneously on Yahoo! Pulse, Facebook, and Twitter.
  • Chat with Facebook friends – In addition to your friends on Windows Live, you can now IM your Facebook friends right within Yahoo! Messenger.

STAY CONNECTED ANYTIME, ANYWHERE
As you and your friends become increasingly mobile, it is essential to stay connected no matter where you are, across devices. That’s why Yahoo! Messenger keeps you connected whether on desktop, the Web, or mobile devices.

  • Enjoy rich experiences across devices – Now on Android! – Make free video calls, and share photos and videos between PC, iPhone, and now Android.
  • Converse virtually anywhere – Start your IM conversations on your PC and continue them from your iPhone, Android, or any Internet-enabled device.
  • Always be available – Stay signed in to multiple PCs simultaneously so you never miss a message.
  • Easy access to recent conversations – Retrieve recent IM conversations from any PC where you have signed in to Yahoo! Messenger.

Learn more and download the new Yahoo! Messenger Beta at http://messenger.yahoo.com/beta/win We hope you’ll enjoy the new Yahoo! Messenger Beta as much as we do!

As with any new release, we want to hear all about your experience — what’s working well for you and what’s not. Try it today and let us know what you think through the “Send Feedback” link on the Help menu.

Also note that video calling on Android requires OS 2.2+ and the Yahoo! Messenger Video Add-on. We support the MyTouch 4G & EVO phones, and will support additional devices in the coming weeks.

  10. One of the features that I was most looking forward to was the ability to remain logged in between multiple computers but as it stands Yahoo Messenger and Yahoo Messenger for Android seem to still disconnect each other. Did I misinterpret “always be available” or is this something that will possibly be corrected in future versions of Yahoo Messenger for Android?

  11. nice version but:
the border is ugly, and when i try to import the arhives it says “A problem occured while importing your existing archive…”

btw, why don’t you just add tabs chat in IMs windows? open a lot IMs windows filled all my screen.

  21. i love the new messenger!

    new things r unbelievable:
    1. facebook [and wlm] chat through msg on xp, finally! something wlm didn’t deliver [so i can finally ditch it]!
    2. games, games, games!
    3. comments on updates from various services and posting to them! directly from msg! omg!
    4. msg histories stored online! nice!

go yahoo! u r doing amazing job, and don’t get anyone tell u otherwise!

ps. all these win7 fanboys/girls whining about “i want aero” simply get on my nerves. don’t listen to them, u r doing great job, supporting ppl than do not follow every single windows update microsoft does [god bless].

  22. To the guy who said “Yahoo Messenger 10 + Facebook = Yahoo Messenger 11″ … you’re right. I was thinking the same thing. However, I like this new integration for it! However, I still enjoy using Yahoo Messenger “Vista”, even though it’s just basic features. It’s great for when my friends want to use my computer! I am just surprised at Yahoo for not unleashing full potential to the messenger of Windows 7. Come on, it’s been a year already!

Oh, and one last thing … for the people saying there’s no new features in Yahoo Messenger 11 (besides Facebook), if you’re using Windows 7 … right click on the icon in your taskbar (not the one by the clock, the big one when your buddy list is open).

OK, so 1 new feature for Windows 7 users. Will we see further improvements?

    Comment by thefalcon2k — November 17, 2010 #

  23. I am very glad with new version 11! becausee I see new aero on yahoo messenger on Windows 7. I am so happy about this!

  25. Yahoo gets off the schneid and brings back proper WPF support! Also, the FB linkage is a real plus. (A huge advantage to the proper WPF support is better skinning – even better, you can access the changer right from YM itself, as opposed to going to Preferences! The skin-changer is to hte left of the minimize button.)

    Comment by Christopher Estep — November 17, 2010 #

  26. For those of you complaining about the default skin/color scheme, change it. The color/skin-changer in YM 11 is just to the left of the Minimize button (it looks, in fact, like a multicolored button). I don’t like purple, either (it reminds me of grape jelly), so I changed it to blue (to match/complement my Windows 7 color scheme, which takes all the hints from my wallpaper).

    Comment by Christopher Estep — November 17, 2010 #

  27. Still no support for Windows Aero

On the downside, Yahoo Messenger 11 Beta comes with the same non-native, colorful themes that have been the norm for a few versions now. If you’re looking for something that will integrate well with your Windows 7 install, this isn’t it, Yahoo Messenger still stands out like loud, purple unicorn at a funeral.

Features like tabbed conversation windows and others that power-users have been wanting for years are still nowhere to be seen. If Facebook integration and mobile use are important to you, Yahoo Messenger 11 is going to be great, if not and you wanted something more, well, at least, you’re used to not getting it by now.

You can start testing the Yahoo Messenger 11 Beta by grabbing it from the link below. While this is labeled as a beta and some bugs should be expected, it should be stable enough for regular use based on previous beta releases of Yahoo Messenger.

    Comment by Softpedia News — November 17, 2010 #

  28. a) Why is there no option to keep the conversation history local anymore? I have to choose to either keep it remotely on your servers or not at all, which means I have no access to it when I’m not online.
    b) Still no tabs.
    c) Why the mash of native and own skin UI?

    Comment by Ryan — November 17, 2010 #

  29. Extremely OUTSTANDING.Really good work by YAHOO ,simply the BEST updates. A small bug is there ,if some user was on IM MOBILE and if that user is back online on yahoo messenger , it still consider that user it as on MOBILE status.

  34. The native window border is the only pleasing thing about the UI.

    Comment by Native UI — November 17, 2010 #

  35. In my opinion Yahoo! Messenger 11 Beta it’s the same as the previous version, plus some social features that I don’t even use. The theme it’s just without spirit. I’m using Windows 7 and the border kinda looks awesome, but inside the border nothing is changed… I just some social stuff. I noticed that the icon it’s still unchanged, it’s the same old one… 32×32 one. Windows 7 support even bigger icons… The Jump List feature it looks unfinished to me, and the status icon in the task bar just annoys me.
There’s still no tabbed IM support.

I loved Yahoo! Messenger for Vista, it was really god, I’d wish that the Yahoo! Team would make something similar in the upcoming versions…

  40. I like the new beta, but I have some issues with the new conversation archive.
1.It won’t import all of my old one, which is very annoying as I have to go to it alot.
2.The actual messages are all messed up. A lot of the words are capitalized when they shouldn’t, a lot of gibberish, and a lot of wrong words.
3.There’s no way to separate conversations by Person, which makes it very annoying.
    Please fix these ~Qhj

  42. Uhmm.. hasn’t this GUI (or one very similar to it) been used for the last three versions of Y! Messenger? I like it, but it is beginning to age. I really loved Y! Messenger for Vista and wish that project would be revived for 7. Y!M could definitely benefit from user-created themes and an improved GUI. Also, wasn’t the beta for v10 not too long ago? I don’t want to see a v11 beta next month; let’s not go all Apple-style…

Over all, however, I am still impressed with the experience I receive from Y!M and it will remain my primary IM’ing program.

  124. I have tried absolutely EVERY solution on the net and still cannot get text to show in my conversation window. Its driving me insane! Script settings are fine, software all up to date, uninstalled all yahoo traces then reinstalled. Doesnt matter what I do I cannot see conversation in the window its just blank once you press enter!

    Comment by frustrated — December 4, 2010 #

  125. The new “conversation history” interprets conversations wrongly. There are _a lot_ of cases where I’m having one big conversation with a person and the history is divided in 100 “conversations” with that contact. And if I want to follow the full conversation I have to select each conversation and scroll it from top to bottom.

The old approach of putting all messages with that person from a full day was better.

    Comment by Valentin — December 5, 2010 #

  126. If I select only some networks on which to publish my status and close the application, when I open it again, it doesn’t remember the past settings.
Yahoo messenger tries by default to send to every social network, it should remember last user settings.

  127. I have just installed the newest version of Yahoo Messenger 11. But, i’m wondering why my Display Image doesn’t appear on my YM, yet, it is visible from my friends’. I have Internet Explorer 8 installed and Windows XP OS. Does the problem have something to do with the system requirement?

I also notice that some newest features on YM 11 don’t work properly with my computer. For example, i cannot use the new environment, i cannot import the archive conversations.

    Comment by Yanti Adi — December 6, 2010 #

  128. How can import message archive in yahoo messenger 11 ?

I just installed yahoo 11 and uploaded on yahoo servers my archive.

After searching on my computer, i found many other conversations that i want to upload because i want to use the search option in conversation history.

But the button in settings – conversation history who was called “import existing archive” has disappeared.

Reinstalling yahoo10 and then yahoo 11 will not solve the problem. That button is gone for ever.

How can i import the remaining archive?

  141. Conversation History is more or less buggy, or even broken. It claims to keep a history of all your conversations but it flat out doesnt do such a thing, it either randomly saves certain convos or doesnt save ANY. Bad bad bad! There was nothing wrong with the message archive so im going back to 10.

    Comment by Rich — December 23, 2010 #

  142. Beta Test Review:
    1) Convo history is poorly implemented and buggy. Does not import correctly. Layout of imported messages is poor. Do not like that you can no longer store messages locally. There should be an option as to store locally or online-they are MY messages, I should control where they are stored.
    2) YM beta continually logs out YMail. I’ve tweaked all settings, nothing solves. If I shut down YMbeta, all is fine.
    3) Still not able to be connected in 2 or more places at once (as WinLive has done for years). The promo text implies this is possible-”always connected”
    4) I like the aero effect
5)some have said it is resource intensive, but I did not notice that.
Summary: Yes, it is a beta that needs more development. I have uninstalled and gone back to YM10 and will wait to give the final version a tryout.

    Comment by David — December 28, 2010 #

  143. I switched to the Beta11 version and all was good with my Yahoo Music Plug-in but at some point I accidentally closed the plug-in and when I went to look for it on my plug-in list it just disappeared. I have the Games…iTunes…News…Weather…etc… but for some reason its gone. I go to the Yahoo! Plug-in website and its nowhere to be found so I had to settle for the Yahoo! Web Player website for now. I suspect that me being on vacation in the Philippines has something to do with the problem since on my messenger’s plug-in list I have the Y! Answers SouthEast Asia plug-in. Anyone have any clue!?

    Comment by Ricardo — January 1, 2011 #

  144. My oly complaint so far is that the beta version has a faulty conversation history. It does not save all of my instant messages, it seems to pick at random what to store. Also it’s really frustrating the way it divides the message history. It would be a lot better if I could just choose the name of the contact and see all of the conversation instead of having to scroll for different parts of it.

  163. Hello, it has come to my attention that there is a chat room exploit with the ability to remove any user from a chat room. The exploit is in rampant use and must be fixed immediately! In a matter of seconds, an entire chat room can be cleared of users. The fact that this exploit has not been patched already is a complete disregard of the ethics involved with software programming.

Here are the packet types, in sequential order, used to execute the vulnerability in Yahoo’s server-side chat room software. The first packet is of content type 87, the second packet is of content type 150. Both content types are base 10 numbers. The packets are standard packets found in Yahoo! Messenger, and have not been obfuscated in anyway. The socket sending the packets is not signed in to YMSG, and the username inserted into the packets is the screen name of person being targeted. A single connection is used to send the packets. After both packets have been sent and the socket is closed, the target ID leaves the chat room.

  175. I had liked it for the most part. I have the concerns most others are having with regard to the conversation history not working properly, but my main thing is the Facebook chat feature. When I initially started using the beta it worked fine, but after I updated my passwords for yahoo and facebook I have not been able to re connect. I keep getting a message that I was able to sign into yahoo/facebook but the connection was not able to be made.

  177. I was wondering why my Yahoo IM contacts were no longer available to me in iChat on my Mac, and they also didn’t show up on my iPhone using IM+. Now that I’ve looked at all your nifty Messenger upgrades I can understand why. However, it would have been great if you had considered continuing to support basic messaging interfaces with jabber based IM applications so basic communication with the IM world was continued. Please consider such an interface.

    Thank you,

  178. Great stuff! but here is the big question, can you disable it all? I do not want to link my yahoo account to my Facebook. yahoo just represents my online chatting stuff. where Facebook represents my offline friends and family. i don’t want to combine the two. so my question is can i turn all of these things off. just like with 10. the cam and voice chat is great. but what about those of us who get harassed in chat rooms by people who don’t take no for an answer. can we disable any of this crap? the last thing i need is more spam on yahoo and Facebook and perverts who do nothing but harass!

    Comment by Johnny — February 10, 2011 #

  179. Johnny, you don’t have to link your yahoo to your facebook it doesn’t even ask you to; you have to go into the preferences and purposefully do it. Though the benefit of linking your accounts was that it allowed you to use yahoo messenger to chat with Facebook friends on facebook chat as yourself.

All the stuff in 10 is here, and I think you really don’t understand at all what the facebook thing is looking here. The only Facebook people that you could IM or could IM you are the exact same ones who could do it on the Facebook webpage. The only thing that linking Facebook with your yahoo account did, aside from logging you in using Facebook (if you choose to), was allow you to use Yahoo messenger to chat with your facebook friends who are online and signed into the facebook chat that hovers at the bottom of the facebook pages.

  197. I have helped weave this for all the people around. It is useful, but watch out how you set your personal settings. Always know who you accept to chat with.

If not, strangers, spammers still send you spam, but it is a way to stay anonymous. For me, makes me feel better, it is easier to say no, than to get harassed.

  198. Yeah, the window border is really ugly, I hope that in the next update it will be fixed, and i don’t like the ideea to upload my archive and it to be available in any computer. Someone could hack my account and see my conversations.

  201. I HATE the new Conversation Archive. It’s buggy, it splits up the messages awkwardly, and each page only has about 20 lines or so, it’s a pain to read long conversations.

I don’t need to access my history from other computers, so please give us the option to use the old archive style!

    Comment by Valerie — March 18, 2011 #

  202. Yahoo, please return the archiving back to how it used to be and stop archiving messages on your servers! It’s a BIG privacy concern.

  204. Hi.
    Thank you Yahoo!
I like the new version but there’s something bothering me about the new messages archiving system.
I really hate it. I’ve uninstalled the new version because of that, please bring back the old archiving messages system.
My archive is very important to me.
    Best regards,
    A.

  205. you guys need to syncronize yahoo messenger with yahoo chat and the pulse profile, so that it updates our nickname and age and info in chat. it has been over 3 years since all that was updateable and changeable.

  207. not bad, although the conversation history getting saved online is a biig privacy risk, what if your id gets hacked? so i would suggest yahoo gives us an option whether we want to save the conversation history online or locally.

  210. Please make the function to make the ‘My Information’ area where my display pic and status box able to have the option of being compact like YM 8.1. Its just too large for my small laptop screen.

Plus, can you guys make an option to create the notification box more compact like in YM 8.1.

I need my ym to be as compact as possible as i have a lot of friends and im using a small screen laptop.

  212. Hey, The only problem I’m having with the beta release is random crashing. I love that when my internet cuts out it grays the windows so I know that its not working though. I like the that you allow windows to theme the borders I hated that my Tavaris theme didn’t work with yahoo, now it does thank you.

I’d also like to add support for creating a Linux version, I know you guys tried a few years ago and it was a pain but please try again, if you can make it work on an apple system( Linux based by the way) you shouldn’t have an issue making it work with at least the ubuntu and mint versions.

So in conclusion great job! release a stable version as soon as you can so I can IM crash free.

What is the point of this??? You people want to spy on us or what?

  219. Please tell me you have a “Windows Classic” skin or “unskinned” setting for this version. The eye candy is nice, but I’d like the lower overhead of it just going with my windows colors and widgets instead of everything being skinned.

    Comment by Zach — July 4, 2011 #

  225. Please do remove the Aero border for Yahoo Messenger, my eyes hurts just by looking at it. I feel uneasy whenever I look at it. So in my opinion, either make it look like YM10 or make it FULL Aero, (like Windows Live Messenger). *no comparison intended*

    Comment by Carl — July 5, 2011 #

  226. Ugly border, please remove!!!!!!!!!!

    Comment by kat — July 9, 2011 #

  227. Is it possible to make the Aero bar optional? I dislike it as I prefer to use the black skin and it just doesn’t match.
Also I don’t see a reason for an extra rim around my message screen. In YIM 10 it looked nice.
I don;t like MSN because of all the extra rims and buttons and flashy stuff. It is what i chose yahoo for.

Also, some of my friend do not seem to have gotten this extra bar upon updating. Any leads on that?
    Kinda envy them..

    Nice job otherwise!

  228. I would really like to have separate options to see who’s coming online for Yahoo and for Facebook. My circle of Yahoo friends is much more limited than the facebook, so now I’m getting constant fb logon/logoff notifications which is very annoying.
