Yahoo! Messenger API to come in July

July 6, 2010 on 8:29 am | In News, Other services, Uncategorized | 18 Comments

An update on the Yahoo! Messenger API: This is taking a little longer than we like – We have some last mile details to take care of but we are committed to launching the new Yahoo Messenger API very soon.

Let me say that we are really excited about the response and enthusiasm that we’ve received around the opening of the platform behind our popular Yahoo! Messenger service. The team is working hard to make sure that these new APIs meet your expectations, that they are as simple as possible, and that they contain all the key features you need to develop great applications and services.

For this reason, we’ll be in contact really soon… Gotta get back to work!

  5. Hey does this mean that people from the open source community doesn’t anymore have to do magic tricks just to implement Yahoo! Messenger on operating systems Yahoo! ain’t supporting, like, uh, Ubuntu?

Specifically, does that new API include webcam, voice and file transfer support?

Why won’t you guys make a port of YM for Linux anyway? Or maybe if you could somehow help in completing Yahoo!-related feature-sets on existing im softwares like Empathy or Pidgin or Kopete that would be awesome.

That’s for your own sake guys. Because I’ve been telling my friends to ditch Yahoo! Messenger altogether since I’ve gone Linux. So maybe I don’t have to do that anymore.

  6. I for one love the idea of open YM API gives us developers a chance to work directly with messenger instead of outside.. As far as Voice Over ip goes.I’m looking forward into hearing more and more into what will all be included hopefully it is more open to help outside developers help to maintain Yahoo! Messenger just remember If it wasn’t for the error reports and bug reports we wouldn’t be at version 10 Full And I Do Agree Yahoo! Messenger Should Be Fully Linux Supported Well By Now

  11. Why does Yahoo ignore the mac platform? I don’t understand why it’s still in beta, with an update every other year…. we mac users DO use yahoo you know. Integrating in ichat would be a great solution if you do not have a team that’s dedicated to the mac platform.

  12. I am really upset about yahoo messenger because it hasn’t been working since about a week and I can’t chat with any of my friends or family, usually when I sign in my YM always pops out immediately but since a week ago it says: Error ( Cannot load resource DLL)
and its starting to be really annoying.

So please hurry up on putting back the YM.
I would really appreciate your understanding and help.

Thank you very much and have a wonderful day.

  13. I am not sure if this is yahoo’s approach to make yahoo cross plateform or they are just making it open to develop plug-ins. I personally think yahoo messenger API is very outdated now, it was originally developed years ago. Probably you guys should rather make the protocol open and create a community project to develop a QT API based client on yahoo protocol. QT is the next Java in my opinion.
