Poll: Why do you use Video Calling?
April 27, 2010 on 10:15 am | In 10 version | 18 Comments
It has been close to 6 months now that Yahoo! Messenger 10 came out of Beta. As many of you know, that one of the most significant upgrades in this version was the ability to make High Quality Video Calls. It has been heart warming to see how well our users have adopted this feature and gradually made it one of the most popular and engaging features on Yahoo! Messenger 10.
In a poll conducted over the Blog about the various Video Call features, the Full Screen view and the ability to share photos/videos/files etc with your buddy while on a Video call were by far the most popular.
Some of our users also love the fact that they could do various fun effects while on a Video Call. Imagine it is Christmas and you are far away from your family – isn’t it cool that you can quickly have a video call with your family and then morph yourself as Santa Claus and celebrate Christmas together?
So, here is a quick poll so that you could share with us as to why you use the Video Calling feature:

I have not used Video calling yet.
Don’t know too much about it.
Thanks
Emilia.

I like the HQ video chatting, but I wonder when you guys will finally bring around the Tabbed Chat windows? THAT would be a “popular and engaging feature.”

Actually, I just looked on the YM10 Features list and it says that the Mac version of YM even has Tabbed IM windows, I’m sorry, I don’t mean to rant/vent hear but this is one of the biggest gripes the community has and I don’t exactly see how a poll over the Video Calling feature has much to do with product development.

I only have sent calls, so I await the outcome of Video calling,,,too early to tell.

This program is a great way to communicate with friends and family if you are overseas. It was way better than a simple email or even a phone call. You can actually see who you are talking to. I think this is a great program.

It’s clear to me, most users don’t use the feature – it was one of Sarah’s pet projects that nobody really cared for, yet you can’t drop it.
Start fixing those major bugs instead please.

“how well our users have adopted this feature”???thats a BIG lie-most of the users in the chat still have messenger 9 or old versions of messenger 10 that video calls dont work with them!so i dont know from where u bring that fake results…NOBODY USE THIS VIDEO CALL FEATURE-everybody use the old webcam broadcast which also let me know who has a cam on and who has a cam at all with this lil tv icon on the users list in the room.
and the video call quality is still SUCKS and i have to put the call on hold and release it just to make it stop being blurry! so this feature is totally USELESS unless u adopt the technology in SKYPE or MSN video calls cause in those programmes the video call quality is perfect especially in SKYPE!

Actually it’s pretty much useless especially for the women in yahoo chat who get constantly harassed by perverts who not only expose themselves on Cam as well as trying to get the women to expose themselves on Cam! I wish there was a way you can get rid of it honestly. also it’s just another thing the Booters can use to boot people off of messenger! just another thing Booters can flood someone and make their messenger shut down. really you should have the option of either turning it off or getting rid of it completely! work on getting rid of the Booters and revive your chat service. you got a good thing going here. but the Booters and the spam bots are killing your chat rooms! the booting is so bad i have to use a 3rd party client. I don’t even go into the rooms with the regular messenger anymore. It’s pretty sad when 3rd party chat clients are more advanced then Y10! Get to work here!

Video calling provides a very high quality video output, even on my cheap webcam, and it is very useful and convenient for calling family and friends that are a continent away.
The issue with this is that the adoption rate of Yahoo 10 has been less than satisfying. I had to preety much force a handful of my friends to upgrade from Yahoo 9 so we could take advantage of this feature. This is in no way an issue of the product itself, rather the poor advertising done for it.
However, as many other users have pointed out, Yahoo Messenger is still missing out on alot of popular features, such as tabbed chat windows and Windows Aero support.
Overall, it’s a very welcome addition to Yahoo Messenger, but the program as a whole still has alot of things that can be improved on.

I love doing yahoo messenger and video chats. I was chatting with my friend in Australia last Christmas and we both used the Santa face thing…we got to laughing so hard that we started to cry. I also sent him a cheesy letter from santa. I love doing funny stuff like that. I know us older folks know the truth about santa, but if you go to http://www.letterbysanta.com and send letters to your friends and other older people they always get a good laugh out of it, especially because they will have no idea who it is from. lol.
