Another example of why Yahoo has failed and Google has taken over. I have lost count but this must be like the 10th beta version of version 3 for the Mac and its only taken 5 years to get here. If you are not going to develop it just kill it and be done with it. I guess you could also dump it on Microsoft and let them develop it, oh wait thats what you did with search. Lame!
Comment by Alex Rodriguez — March 26, 2010 #
finally, thank you! but i’m expecting more upgrades.
Comment by f — March 26, 2010 #
I’m a big Yahoo fan since the 90’s but I’ve gotta agree with Alex on this one…
Yahoo — You’ve gotta either get on the horse, or get off… Straddling Mac people (the most crazy, nutcase, and zealous of all) along with beta after beta after beta is just disheartening and somewhat insulting.
I have all Apple stuff yet I still use Yahoo for search and e-mail despite the white, shiny, fancy “Google” whitebox in Safari welcoming my next query. Yet I still use Yahoo. Does that make me crazy?!
Yahoo’s gotta show some love to the Mac community if they (Yahoo) want Mac community love in return.
Comment by JuanGuapo — March 26, 2010 #
all come on you guys
want want want want why can you guys this be happy that the mac 3.0 is out at last for you mac uesers
the yahoo IM team works hard on geting that out
ok there still may be a few bugs with it but that can be fixs and fast so this be happy and stop with all the want want want things
Comment by David — March 26, 2010 #
6 years later and YM for Mac 3.0 is still in beta?
That’s impressive, you just beat Gmail for longest beta software cycle…
Comment by Paul — March 26, 2010 #
Thank you for fixing the display image issue. It was quite annoying to set my avatar each time I logged in.
Comment by Lucky — March 27, 2010 #
I find it quite appalling that the Y! Messenger for mac contains tabbed IMs and has a cleaner UI. Secondly…why should mac users be faced without obtrusive advertising? I’m sorry to say that this is unfair and very biased.
Comment by Derrek — March 29, 2010 #
All these new versions are great (as far as I can see) but what about a new version for New Zealand? Australia has one and they are only next door. I only have Yahoo!Xtra messenger 8 and it doesn’t work at the moment. I want 10. We don’t have any other version available here. Why why why? We want it too!
Comment by Jules — March 30, 2010 #
this version is just as buggy as the last.
crashes everytime i log into another account.
Comment by jenny — March 30, 2010 #
@Alex Rodriguez
Yeah, google talk does even have voice on Mac. so what are you trying to say? No cool smileys. Not even close to features of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac.
@Messenger team. thanks for the update. still waiting for the next one. I hope you would release the final version soon with a lot more feature
Comment by tosh — March 30, 2010 #
This version is worse than the last… I think all Mac users should boycott Yahoo!
Comment by po'd — March 31, 2010 #
ok.. so can you please tell me why Y! Messenger for Mac randomly decides when the webcam will and will not work? i used it a week ago.. now no matter who i talk to I have no option to broadcast webcam.. i thought if i updated to the “latest BETA version” i might have some resolution.. but.. no. I mean really.. it is so buggy. I’ll stick to my iChat and delete my Y! account because this is beyond ridiculous.. Step it UP!!

I just saw the blog announcement of the image fixes…
Humbug. Doesn’t work for me either. What’s really sad, is I’m sure older versions of YM had more features for the Mac, such as the ability to share photos with IBM users.
Yahoo just doesn’t care anymore.

The latest build (3.0.1.35554) on Leopard (10.5.8) – I have lost the functionality of BUZZ a.k.a CMD-G
Comment by Anton — April 15, 2010 #
I can confirm the buzz issue! That’s just hilarious..
I’ll give up soon on Yahoo mail and Yahoo Messenger.. they don’t care about us anymore..
Comment by Aetherius — April 16, 2010 #
Buzz does work for me if I use the pull–down menu. Still no joy with the display image problem, however. Is it working with other people?
Comment by RenoDavid — April 16, 2010 #
This is so wack. I’m done with yahoo as soon as I finish selling my buddy list on google talk and skype.
Comment by Fred — April 19, 2010 #
there’s not enuf room for good and more stylish UI for XP version. …dough! mac ahead!
Comment by dwiRianto — April 23, 2010 #
Yeah, the Mac version of Messenger is in eternal beta moving from tiny version to tiny version over the years, but at least the functions that matter are there (IM and voice). I don’t care for IMVironments, Audibles and all that crap, and when I’m on Win I always disable them.
Sure, the new video-call thing sounds nice (but that’s what Skype is for), and the photosharing is something I often miss. And the webcam ‘option’ is a joke compared to other services.
Other than that, the UI is quite pretty and Mac-like, without all the messy clutter that is the Win version, and I’d rather have it like this.
Among my friends there is a slow but palpable trend of moving towards Gtalk (and 90% of them are on Windows). The Win client of Gtalk is quite developed, while on the Mac… there is no official client. I use Adium or iChat. (iChat is a very good choice if you have other friends using iChat, voice and video chat work quite amazingly – better than Skype).
Anyway, 3.0 Beta is fine as long as it works and has the basic functions for IMing.
Comment by Andrei — May 3, 2010 #
i have been a Yahoo fan since the 90s and still an avid user of ur email service, however your messenger service is not update…and there is either a bug or a problem with the voice service, i know a lot of friends who decided against using Yahoo…..and honestly speaking i think Yahoo doesn’t even care anymore to provide some minimal quality service.FIX YOUR VOICE SERVICE.
Comment by Ra — May 5, 2010 #
OK….the display image thing is working properly again. Just noticed today. Cool!
Comment by RenoDavid — May 9, 2010 #
Well, for me the YM works seamlessly on Snow Leopard (10.6.2). Not much difference, but some crashes i had seen before are gone. So, quite a nice experience.
Just waiting for Photo Share, and i don’t need anything else
. Sarah, please see when you can get it here, coz am quite a fan of Yahoo for it’s messenger
.

I have tried 3.0 latest beta for mac,it was working fine for me but after upgrading to latest 10.6.4 SL i am facing hanging issues when replying in the chat box.It hangs for a minute and than send the message to recipient.
Comment by Ibrahim — June 29, 2010 #
Still having the same display image problems that have been an issue for the past year. Tired of Mac users being second class citizens!!!
Comment by MAB — July 9, 2010 #
On a 10.5.8, the March build crashes often as in once in a couple of days. I judiciously send in a report. I wonder when the next build is due ? Why cant the mac developers put out weekly builds and call it beta-builds ?
Comment by Anton — July 14, 2010 #
help, been trying to log on to YM for the past 3 hours but nothing is happening. early today i was able to but now nothing is happening. im using an old powerbook g4. need YM to communicate with people in different countries.
what’s happening?
Comment by sv — July 14, 2010 #
Anyone know what’s happening at Yahoo IM for Mac these days? On my iMac I cannot log into Yahoo IM. All I get is a color wheel and it lasts for hours if I let it. I’ve used Adium as a work around, but it lacks some of the functionality of Yahoo IM, such as selective invisibility. Yahoo IM works great on my MacBook Pro, though, so go figure. I’d like to use Yahoo IM on my iMac. There don’t seem to be any answers anywhere out there, as you might find with other applications.

Seriously. I use yahoo messenger every day, and I have ever since it was first released y-e-a-r-s ago.
Now I’m on mac, and I really want a update. I love the GUI. It’s simple.
But, what i want in the next version is:
* Better plug-ins
* Themes for yahoo messenger, like change it to different colours. And I would also like to see more themes (styles, and colours) for the chat window.
* Games, I want to be able to play games with my friends that are on yahoo messenger for windows.
* Moving display pictures, meaning .gif support.
Will we seriously ever see a newer version? Can someone from the yahoo for mac team please honestly answer us that, and also When we will see it?
Comment by donald duck — December 2, 2010 #
i’ve been using ym on my pc since ym was first released. now i switched to an iMac and i was really disappointed to see the ym for mac is at the level the ym for windows was about 5 years ago..
- no photo sharing
- no embedding of photos or videos into chat window
- no zync-like plugin
- no popup in the right corner displaying the message received when window is minimized (and this was quite useful on the pc)
- and when receiving emails, the notification looks more like a code than a simple From+Subject email notification..
why is it so hard to implement functions that ym has had for pc for ages?
Comment by alex — December 23, 2010 #
How come there is no new version for the MAC? the current version crashes too much.
Comment by katie — February 16, 2011 #
Why aren’t you updating Messenger for Mac at the same rate as the Windows version? The Windows version is in what, 10 or higher? And the Mac version is in 3? Wow…Seriously? You can stay silent on the issue all you want and ignore Mac users but how long do you really need to keep this in BETA? Please show your loyal Mac users that you’re at least listening by at least giving us an update on your blog. That’s what this thing is for right? Thank you.
Comment by e bags — February 19, 2011 #
I must say, I do agree with the bulk of the posts I see about Messenger for Mac. Having recently switched from a G4 (Quicksilver) to a new Mac mini, and then discovering that my Messenger 3.0 beta was lying to me about being up to date, I downloaded and installed the 3.0.1 beta (build 235554). To my disgust, the Display Image issues appear to have been completely ignored, despite the claim of a fix for that issue being in this update.
With today’s development tools, you guys should be able to have the exact same code for each OS and let the compiler do the work of generating the correct binaries for the appropriate OS. These continuous coding bugs, at the very least, suggest a serious disinterest in providing a quality product. There are reasons I refuse to use Yahoo for my web searches, and the (lack of) quality in Messenger for Mac is one of those reasons.
While I hate to say this, at least Microsoft’s Messenger for Mac, while generally behind in features compared to the Windows version, is more stable. It’s really very sad when I see somebody with lower quality code than Microsoft. I mean, I only use Windows because it’s still the better gaming platform. Real work, however, is being done on my Mac.

I have to state that this ver. for mac is terrible .
This ver. is very slow and definitely very old compare to the one PC has and its not fair. Why is it that this ver. can’t share pictures or even buzz normally. Its so complex that its idiotic. And over a month now I have been trying to change my display image and nothing. It still the same image. So please “the yahoo community” you should really step it up. We mac users are still one of your loyal customers not just PC. AND WE DESERVE THE SAME TREATMENT!!

this update has made messenger for mac nearly unusable. cant see chatters list in chat rooms, so if you want to go into a chat room you can find some one to chat with,,,i think you should just mac messenger available to pc users only, and bag the frustrating program challenges to mac….there is no committment to mac users by yahoo
