iPhone update now available

The latest update to Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (version 1.3) is now available. This latest version includes updates for display images, file sharing, as well as support for more languages.
With this new version, we added one of the most frequently requested features from our users – the ability to change your display image right in the iPhone app. Use an existing photo that is stored on your iPhone or take a new one. To change your display image, tap on Settings, then “My Contact Details”.
We also fixed some bugs that were causing display image update problems. So now when your friend updates their display image, it will change in your contact list as well. You no longer need to sign out and back in to get display image updates.
The file sharing feature also got a nice boost. Now you can IM both photo and videos that are stored on your iPhone. You can also receive and view photos, videos (.mov, .mp4), Microsoft Office documents (.doc, .ppt, .xls), .txt files, and PDF files from within the Yahoo! Messenger app. Note that you can only receive those additional types of files, not send. When sending and receiving, the maximum file size is 15MB, which is much larger than the limits of MMS.
This update also includes new language support for French, Italian, German and Spanish. If your iPhone uses one of those languages, your Yahoo! Messenger app will as well after you download this latest version.
To help combat IM spam when you’re on your iPhone, we also added a preference that allows you to ignore messages from people that are not on your Yahoo! Messenger contact list. To set this preference, tap on the Settings icon and look for “Privacy” in the Options section. The preference is turned off by default, so if you want to ignore people not on your list, be sure to go into Preferences and update the setting after you install this latest version.
To download the new version, tap the App Store icon on your iPhone and search for Yahoo! Messenger (you may also see an update alert on your App Store icon). Or click here to download it through iTunes.
We hope your enjoy this latest version. If you have any technical issues with Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone, please send us feedback by tapping on “Settings”, then scrolling down and tapping on “Report Problem”.

Sarah,
Nice work. This remains one of my most used apps on my phone.
Just a couple of thoughts that ive posted before.
It would be nice to have the option that would allow you to choose a different name to appear on your text messages.
For example, I use SvRxxxxx on my contacts for messenger. When i send a text that same name shows up and people dont have a clue who the heck i am. Would be nice to allow an option for that and also a signature for sms if one isnt in place. Just a couple thoughts. Keep it up sarah and crew.

What about the ability to select which screenname is talking to a particular contact, both at message time and as associated with the contact?
Comment by QNetter — December 3, 2009 #
The display image bug was pretty annoying, now that it is fixed I like it much more even though it is my preferred app anyway!
Keep it up!

Do msn contacts work? (or at least show me as offline so they don’t send me a message I can’t receive)
Comment by matt — December 3, 2009 #
@matt – No, sorry, we don’t support MSN contacts in our mobile versions. We hope to change that in the future but no definitive date right now. And yes, when you’re on a mobile device, you appear offline to your Windows Live friends. Thanks,
Sarah Bacon

Hi Sarah! Again thanks for all the hardwork and making this app more and more refined! I do have a suggestion for maybe a future update. The issue I have is that when someone im’s me and I don’t get to it and want to check the time it was sent, once I open up the app, the message is displayed as having the time I opened the app up and not the time the im came in. More of a small detail, understandibly, but nonetheless a feature I think is important if you’re an im fanatic like me. Again kudos to you and your team for one of my favorite and used iPhone app out there!

I second Miggs215 comment. Suppose someone pings me with “Leaving now” message. If I’m not by my iPod Touch when it arrives, then I really don’t have any idea when the message was sent, and when that person had left to meet me. This is a hypothetical scenario but this issue bugs me more often than not.

when are they going to make a win mo app? seeing as they have an app for apple devices an app for rim devices but no app to be found for win mo.

Hi Sarah,
Great update thus far. I’ve been waiting to be able to change my pic forever via the mobile app.
Also one request, will you ever implement a “typing notification” feature? It would be really helpful for both users to know if someone is typing a reply or not.
I would like to request the feature Miggs215 spoke about. Usually if you sign into Yahoo Messenger on the desktop and you receive offline IMs, it tells you the time and date of the message; however, if you do this on the mobile app, it never says whether the message you just received was an offline message, and it gives you the current time and date of the message that was just received. This should be fixed.
Thanks.

what about security issues? you keep adding all the crap one can imagine but the application(doesn’t matter on what platform it runs) lacks certain things in the security department(you know very well about them since version 8 or so).
i’m considering changing IM software throughout the company…

Oh, it would be so nice to support MSN contacts… most of my friends don’t understand how better and awesome Yahoo! is, so they keep with that windows live argh.

I really like the update. Yahoo! Messenger is one of the most used apps on my iPhone. Thanks for all the hard work.
There are a few feature requests that I think would make this into a 5-star app.
1. I would like the ability to Select and Copy text from the text bubbles.
2. I would like the ability to change the colors of the text bubbles, because I would like to use the same color scheme that the Messages app uses.
3. The date and time stamp should be from when the (offline) message is sent, instead of when it arrives.
4. It would be useful to have typing notifications registered from the app to the network. It would also be useful to have an icon that displayed when the other person was typing.

Hey, Love the new 1.3 version
Though it gives me an alert to “Connect to iTunes for allowing PUSH NOTIFICATIONS” , used to work fine on previous versions of this app.
Here’s d screenshot :

Push notifications have been inconsistent over the past few days. System issue or software problem? Also experiencing more than normal “Message Failed to Send” errors in the past day or so?
Seems a few others here are experiencing the same?
Comment by vl — December 17, 2009 #
is there an option to backout to a previous version of the app? I’m experiencing many more problems since updating to 1.3

Hi,
Just wanted to ask if there’s a way to specify stealth settings for specific contacts?
What I mean is a feature similar to the desktop YM client, wherein a person signed-in as Invisible and selectively choose to appear only for some of their contacts.
Thanks.
Comment by raist — January 13, 2010 #
@raist – Right now the iPhone version does not offer per contact stealth settings. You can only be available to everyone, or invisible to everyone. Thanks,

what about text msg billing ?
Are yahoo messenegr messages counted as data or txt msgs?
Comment by clavicle44 — January 30, 2010 #
@clavicle44 – SMS messages sent through the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app are counted as data, not as text messages under your plan.

if you have ignore people not on your contacts “yes”, can those people still see that you are on line? i had someone add me as a contact, then refused to let me add them, and i would really like to make it so they can’t see me.
thanks,

In re: to SMS messages sent through via YM counting as”data” and not as texts – Does the phone # to which the SMS text is being sent show up in ANY billing detail or are the “receivers” of the messages completely anonymous except to the sender when sending?
