Connection help in the latest Yahoo! Messenger
November 18, 2009 on 7:34 am | In 10 version | 104 Comments
On a normal day, we double click on the Yahoo! Messenger icon to sign in, the yellow smiley wakes up, and our contact list loads. Then we’re off and chatting with friends.
But sometimes, not everything works perfectly. Sign in issues can sometimes be attributed to problems with an internet connection. This is why we added a new Connection Troubleshooter tool to the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 10.
If Yahoo! Messenger has problems connecting during the sign-in process, a small window will appear alerting you that there may be a problem with your internet connection. From there, you can click the Troubleshoot button to let it run some connection diagnostics on your machine. After some quick analysis, it will recommend some next steps for resolving the issue.
The wizard also records all the steps it took while diagnosing the problem. Click the “Show Details” button on the final screen to view the details (sometimes it’s helpful to copy and paste those details when working with customer care on an issue).
The connection wizard is only available in the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 10 (10.0.0.1102 or later) which works on Windows XP, Vista and 7. You’ll only see this wizard when there is a problem with your internet connection, such as a missing connection or problems with your internet proxy.

I keep downloading YIM 10 but never get an icon, even tho I tell it to run, it does not appear anywhere – can’t even uninstall in control panel because it never installs
I’m installing on a brand new computer that came with Windows 7

I get this message when I try to log in, despite being connected to the internet. When I click on troubleshoot it runs through the tests… then just disappears. Why won’t it let me connect?

so i got windows 7, and i’m trying to get the tray icon of yahoo messenger 10 changed. if you have windows 7 you’d see the new tray icons for sound, battery and internet are black and white, so therefore i tried changing the little yellow and red smiley into a black and white one. tried modifying the messenger .exe file and replaced the 16×16 icons, both the 8bit and 32 bit ones, but the changes occur only in the task bar if i have the messenger window active. could you point me out please to how to modify that icon ?

The new version 10 is installing a redistributable x86 and is causing a 0xc0150002 error when messenger tries to initialize. I went back to version 9 and everything is working fine, please advise.

I am having trouble getting YM 10 to connect. The troubleshooter says it can’t connect to the Virtual IP server. I have been using YM for a very long time and this is the first problem I have encountered. I noticed this problem after I created the new log on that is stored on the computer. I have tried un-stalling and re-installing YM and get the same error message twice.
Please help me, BTW, I am not a fan of the YM web messenger.

I had messenger 9 and used to have alot of sign in issues and had reset my password and re-install the messenger and then it used to fix it temperarily. So I got frustated of it and downloaded version 10 and now I having the same issue. I even have Yahoo Phone in and Phone out voice services and I am extremily frustated as to how this Yahoo messenger is not working for me.

Downloaded to YM 10 and now having signon issues, and locking up my netbook, I use windows XP home. Never had these issues with YM 9; Friend in UK had to upgrade his YM from 9 to 10 because our cameras would not work because of two different versions, he runs windows vista, he is now starting to have same issues as I am. Please fix or PLEASE GIVE US WAY TO DOWNGRADE BACK TO YM 9 until issues are worked out. I have had to pull my battery to get my netbook to hard reboot, you gave me blue screen of death last night and no I have no viruses.

Messenger 10 seems to be worse with proxies than earlier versions. There is no field to specify a static HTTP proxy URL, it relies on IE proxy settings. But you guys didn’t think of “autoproxy”. YM10 cannot connect if IE has autoproxy settings.

The ONLY solution to this infuriating problem is by clearing your Cache and History from/through IE. Try re-opening http://www.yahoo.com on IE then try logging into Yahoo Messenger again.
Your next log in attempt to Yahoo Messenger will be SUCCESSFUL. Worked for me and a lot more that I know were experiencing the same problem!
Comment by Eden — January 21, 2010 #
Oh and btw, please post and let me know if it worked for you as well, thanks!
Comment by Eden — January 21, 2010 #
Yes… As pointed out here, any connectivity problem to http://www.yahoo.com from Internet Explorer (IE) could give such an error. My computer was infected by some virus that changed the LAN Settings of my IE to use a Proxy and I got the same errors when I tried to use Yahoo Messenger. So, clear your Cache, check IE settings, and make sure you could access Yahoo web site. It will resolve your issue.

I am having the same problem with the rest I tried to diagnosed this problem by following the instruction, deleted cache and cookies, reinstall it and also deactivate my email chat. Bt it is only my yahoo messenger that i can’t sign in. My Internet connection has no problem. Thse are the details when I tried to troubleshoot. I can’t even copy them it is too fast for me to copy them but I checked everything is passed….
please help.
Thank you.

I did not need any of these. I had the same problem. What i did was..
1) open internet explorer
2) tool -> internet option -> lan settings
3) make sure automatically detect settings is checked on. then save settings..
4) sign in to yahoo again.
It worked for me.
Comment by Pradeesh — February 17, 2010 #
Thanks Pradeesh. Your steps worked for me. The problem was pre-empted by a virus that changed my IE settings (I use firefox though) Also, for those having problems installing YM10, you can go to softpedia.com to download the setup file.

I too have this ‘COMPONENT_TYPE_YCP’ YCPError: ‘YMSG.ColoSelectionTimeout’ login problem an I don’t use I.E. so can you please provide a solution to this problem for those of us that use FireFox? Thanks in advance, J

Open details on the alert and follow the instructions. Make adjustments in Microsoft Internet Explorer by opening Tools—->Internet Options——>Connections. If Dial up use Add and follow instructions.
If Cable or DSL use LAN Auto Detect and use Proxy Server port 80

Hi, I work over my company’s VPN and we have all the browsers(including IE) configured to auto detect the proxy settings;this has been there for years and is supposed to work this way only.
The bad news is that YM 10 fails a big time; it crashes while signing me in.. Yahoo needs to fix this..
Comment by Abi — March 28, 2010 #
Thanks for not giving a single clue on how to remedy this. Typical Yahoo bullcrap…don’t even know why I bother anymore.
Comment by farquaht — March 29, 2010 #
This yahoo messenger sucks..
Comment by Shienna — April 12, 2010 #
Finally, after searching all over yahoo, I find the answer to my problem, a simple proxy setting that had gotten screwed up. I hadn’t thought of checking IE’s settings, since I don’t use it, I use Firefox instead. Maybe if yahoo’s problem wizard wasn’t so obsessed with password issues, it might have told me to check these settings.

Hi,
Thanks to the people here who gave their input. I had the same problem as everyone here with logging in to yahoo messenger. A few of the posters here mentioned changing settings in IE Local Area LAN Settings. I unchecked everything and now my yahoo works. I guess my IE is still being used for something, even though I’ve stopped using it years ago!
Thanks again for everyone’s input.

Comment by pissed off — December 10, 2010 #
I fixed it. Wanted to post here in case someone else had the same problem.
Went into IE, then tools, then internet options. On the connections tab clicked lan settings and unchecked the box saying to use a proxy server and checked the one saying to automatically detect.
Problem solved…

Comment by sandesh — December 17, 2010 #
Clear your IE cookies, history, and cache. Check your IE’s LAN settings, be sure to “check” the “automatic settings” box, and “uncheck” the “use a proxy server”.
Restart your yahoo messenger, and it should work, If it still doesnt, I really dunno how to help

Hey Guys, I’ve been having the same problem only recently when none of my connection settings have changed, I did however find what seems to be a temporary fix at least for me.. On Yahoo before signing in I clicked on Messenger>connection preferences I use to have the radio ” (o) connect directly to the internet” selected and had no problems… sense I had this issue this morning I switched that radio to
” ( ) Connect directly to the internet”
” (o) Connect Via Proxy Server”
“(o)HTTP Proxy”
That seemed to get me in, good luck and hopefully there is a permanent fix for this soon
