New FoxyTunes plug-in: Control and share your music
October 28, 2009 on 11:32 am | In 10 version, 9.0 version, Features | 19 Comments
Our Mac users have had this for awhile, but now our Windows users can also control their music player and share what they’re listening to with friends using Yahoo! Messenger.
The new FoxyTunes from Yahoo! Music plug-in lets you easily control your desktop music player as well as share the track you’re listening to in your Yahoo! Messenger status.
To get started, install the FoxyTunes plug-in, available for users on Yahoo! Messenger 8.1, 9.0 or 10. Once it’s loaded, click the “Select Player” menu and choose from a long list of players that are supported by the plug-in. All the biggies are there – Windows Media Player, iTunes, RealPlayer, Winamp, Musicmatch – plus many more.
When you select a player, it will launch it on your desktop (if it’s not already open). Then use the controls in the FoxyTunes plug-in to begin playing the song, skip to the next song, pause, adjust volume or move ahead in the song by clicking the progress bar.
To share what you’re listening to with your Yahoo! Messenger friends, click the “Share your music” icon (the one with two arrows on it). Be sure the box for “Display current song as your status message” is checked, and then click your status message menu at the top to select the currently playing song from the list. When the next song comes on, your status will automatically update.
Another handy feature in the plug-in is the ability to open and play an audio file from your desktop. Just click the “Play File” icon and choose the song you want to play.
The plug-in also includes quick access to the accompanying music website, FoxyTunes Planet. Click the FoxyTunes Planet button while listening to a track and you’ll go to a page for that artist which includes the latest news, lyrics for the song you’re currently playing, more tracks you can listen to right on the page, plus videos.
When you’re sharing your music via your status message, friends will also be able to click on your status message and be taken to the artist page on FoxyTunes Planet.
To add the FoxyTunes plug-in to your Yahoo! Messenger, visit the plug-in page on the website or click the “Add Plug-ins” button in your main Messenger window and select it from the list.

Ms. Bacon there appears to be a typo on the plugin page:
“Last updated:

Version:
1.0 “

@SFGC – Wow, this plug-in is an oldie!
Thanks for the heads up. I’ll get that updated.

It will not work for me, all I get is an error message telling me “Oops! We’ve had an error. FoxyTunes encountered an issue. Restarting your computer will fix the issue. No rush, whenever you’re ready.” After rebooting I get the same error message.
Windows Vista Home Premium SP2 64bit
Messenger 10.0.0.542-us BETA
Error report page failed repeatedly too

Oh good, it trashed the plug-in manager too, now I can’t even uninstall it. Nor can I install or uninstall any other plug-ins.

After a Windows alert dialog box informing me of compatibility issues I rebooted a second time, this at least got me another install dialog box from FoxyTunes, although it still didn’t work. A third reboot got it, but I still have no access to the plug-in manager which was working fine right up to the point of installing FoxyTunes.

It’s now been 6 restarts of my computer. I have uninstalled, re-installed, then again uninstalled Messenger 10 and downgraded back to Messenger 9. I still have no access to the plug in manager so I can not uninstall this plug-in, uninstall any existing plug-ins or install any new ones. The Plug-in manager is merely a blank window. It worked perfectly before i installed FoxyTunes.
I recommend avoiding this for now, until the bugs are fixed. It works great but it’s really not worth the collateral damage.

Can someone please direct me to where I can get support for Yahoo Messenger on Blackberry? I see many people complaining on Twitter about not being able to log in through their phones (I have BB Storm recently upgraded to 5.0 OS). I was hoping there might be a blog post about the outage as it’s been days for a number of us!
Any help would be great. Thanks.

What makes you think that all of your subscribers will continue to use Yahoo Messenger? I will go to a more pleasant messenger service. You are being too directive Sarah. I don’t appreciate anyone telling me what I must do. You are accustomed to dealing with sheep. I’m not part of the food chain.
