Yahoo! Messenger 10 update: video bug fixes
September 29, 2009 on 4:13 pm | In 10 version | 77 Comments
An update of Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta is now available (10.0.0.542). This latest version addresses a couple of video call bugs, plus some improvements in messaging about how it works. Changes in this latest version include:
- Improvements in the webcam detection logic. If you were able to use your webcam on 9.0 or other IM programs, but not on Yahoo! Messenger 10, this fix should take care of the issue.
- Explanation for grayed-out video call button. If your video call button is grayed-out when you’re IM’ing with a friend, it’s because they’re on an older version of Yahoo! Messenger. In order to receive your video call, they also need to upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta. To help reduce confusion about this, we added an inline message explaining this.
- Smoother handling of unanswered calls. When you make a call to a friend but they don’t answer within 20 seconds, the call is automatically terminated. Previously there was no messaging about this, so we added one to let you know that your friend did not answer your call.
- Better explanation for downgraded video calls. In the event your internet connection can no longer support the full video call (e.g. video + voice), the conversation gets downgraded to a voice-only call. When this happens, the video picture disappears. This is the correct behavior, but we added some inline messaging so you’ll know when and why it’s happening.
We hope everyone is enjoying Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta. If you have any feedback, good or bad, please be sure to submit it through our feedback form, available under Help > Send Feedback in the product.
And if you encounter any technical issues while using Yahoo! Messenger 10, go to Help > Report a Problem to Yahoo! to provide us with information that will help us troubleshoot the issue.

If the user is on your friends list. You can right click their ID and scroll down to More Actions, on the sub menu click View Webcam. Also if they have the Webcam showing in their status message you can click and View it from there.

Sarah, I have to report some very annoying bugs I’m experiencing with this new version.
1. When I go in the Help menu and choose Check for updates, Messenger crashes (I’m using Firefox 3.5 as my default browser).
2. When I’m trying to send files (send, not receive) to my friends, Messenger suddenly closes with no warning.
Waiting for rapid fixes.
Best regards,
Petru

Again the ever increasing CPU usage. Using Firefox and Yahoo Messenger shoots up CPU Usage percent. Too much memory leak from Yahoo Messenger and is becoming heavier with every release.

i am not pertaining to “How to view a webcam” what i am saying was, nothing appears on the webcam window even if the target user’s webcam is connected and online..
as i kept using the newest beta build, i constantly struggle on this one.. and same goes to the other party, a user not using the beta build, when i invite them to view my webcam, it just appears “the user has accepted the request…” and never progress from it.. AFAIK, the status or prompt message should be turned to: “the user has started viewing your webcam”…
so to the YM team, please do check it.. it might be because of the video calling that made two different YM versions (specifically a ver. 10 user and a non ver. 10 user) unable to use the simple webcam feature (which functions very well on version 9 and lower)…

i also experienced and still experiencing this one both on the last ver. 9 build and current beta build..
i can recreate the error, and since i keep the error logging service, i see it always points to:
ModName: idmmbc.dll
ModVer: 5.18.2.0
Offset: 0000d81b
and what i do to recreate it was tick the sign in invisible, then i sign in.. after a few seconds i online my status, then after a few seconds again, i sign out.. then that error appears..

@SeishiNui
idmmbc.dll is a idmmbc belonging to Internet Download Manager LSP dll\r from Tonec Inc.
Also your webcam are the drivers up to date? Is your cam selected in the Yahoo! Mesenger preferences under Voice & Video Devices and also Webcam.

@admin when you posted about the new beta, you remarked upon how there was very little, or indeed any, feedback on the cam features.
Many people then proceeded to list numerous bugs from this new version and before, but you seem in this bug release only to have fixed the cam things?
Yahoo! is about us now, so please address our bug reports

The bug with file sending got so annoying to me that I think I’m going to downgrade back to 9!!! Please answer our bug reports, we won’t punish you… it’s part of the human way of being to make mistakes… just acknowledge them… that’s all we want.

It’s nice to see Yahoo taking somewhat of an interest in their services and products but from what I’ve seen with Yahoo Messenger 10 and the road ahead I think it’s a case of too little too late. But good luck anyways.

so now IDM and YM conflicts each other? as far as i remember, it happened on the last build of version 9…
also, regarding the webcam, i am completely using it flawlessly on a version 9 YM on the same PC… so it not a question of the webcam settings/performance… and for an added info, i am using an acer laptop, installed version 9, used the webcam, then installed version 10, used the webcam and there, it malfunctions.. when used together with my desktop that has the version 9, my laptop cannot view the connected webcam..

I cannot seem to download the latest Beta 10 version, and since I have been trying all day, even going back to 9 version, I get an error message and cannot open the application: “(Application error) correct startup of the application has failed (0xc0150002). Press confirm in order to close the application”. What is wrong and how can I fix this problem?
Comment by Marilyn Kano — October 6, 2009 #
A friend of mine is using the newest 10 beta along with me (542-us) and she is still getting the messenger 9 chat windows. She can’t view any video calls since 9 doesn’t have that feature at all. when she goes into the help section, and looks up the version, it is the same as mine. I don’t know why she is still getting the 9 chat windows. she has downloaded the beta 3 times, but to no avail. She is using vista. I have suggested that she uninstall completely and reinstall to try and solve this, but it was late, so she didn’t have time to try that. I will comment back after she has tried that.

YM10 on my xp computer worked for one day then it refused to start back. (reinstalled many times, even deleted every yahoo file) Same error message: “cannot open the application: “(Application error) correct startup of the application has failed (0xc015000etc). close the application”. Seemed to have corrupted my antivirus as well… I was happy for one day… Actually I was perfectly happy with YM7 without the blinking ads all over it..

i’m having a persistent issue with the video calls in the beta. everytime i or my friend initiate one, i get a warning message that my mic and speakers cannot be detected (in spite of the fact that they work perfectly with all other applications). i then lose all audio on my computer, and the only way to get it back is to restart the computer. any ideas on how to fix this would be gratefully recieved…

Messenger…Please change this in following versions…

Hi!
Has anyone encountered the problem of A/V synchronization? There are times when the video chat goes almost perfectly (the audio is always delayed somehow), but in some cases it is very annoying. Oh, and another thing. I say a complete phrase and the other party receives it a few seconds(!!!) later. And it isn’t the internet speed, we both have high speed broadband connection, and I have tested it several times with no other active download/upload.
Regards

Yahoo Bugs
- Yahoo Beta 10 works fine with my webcam, & also works with a friend who has the latest Beta 10 overseas. Regular webcam window works, but not Video call? I do have another friend overseas that it works fine with!
- I loved the Yahoo Vista, & it worked dreaminly under XP. I was so in love with it, except I could not find where to get the audio/webcam version of it? Please, please, please, please, Vista XP was totally perfect if you have webcam & audio. I wish you still had it, or at least de-uglify the current offerings! 10 for Vista was so cool with tabbed IM, sleeks skins, color selector.
I love, love, loved the Vista version. Bring it back, please?
I just want webcam, audio, chatroom, & email checking on it to make it perfect!
Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Comment by Bogdan — October 18, 2009 #
The *STILL* persistent unfixed bug with all currently available versions of YIM is that there is no direct link on the download page for the full stand-alone installer for Yahoo Instant Messenger.
The only installer that Yahoo is currently permitting to be made available for download is the web installer which is merely an installer stub that downloads a destroy-on-execute temporary copy of the actual installer.
Comment by Jeni C — October 18, 2009 #
@Sue – Yes, you can download Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta in Canada. Note that our CA site does not yet offer version 10, so you’ll need to get it from the US site: http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/winbeta

I personally love, Yahoo, more than any other Instant messenger, their Emoticonds,Audubles, The Buzz, Hidden emoticons and the sleek style of it. the bad thing is that my webcam is built in, so its not the greatest neither the clearest. I am sure if I get a new one and a better one, this will be It.

i use YM 9 and IDM too, and experienced the same problem when i sign out YM while IDM is still running..
simply uncheck the “use advanced browser integration” on the IDM option.. i still check the “mozilla firefox” on the “integrate IDM into browsers:” option, though..
and now the problem is gone..

When I try to connect with my wifes messenger via video it comes up with the following:
The video call has been converted to a voice call because LeckLeck Boxshall’s configuration doesn’t support video calls.
She is using version 7. Does this mean that version 7 cannot converse with version 10?
She does not want to uprade as her family scattered all over the place have varying degreees of connectivity. And version 7 is the one they all seem to have working on all their PC’s
Comment by Robert — January 20, 2010 #
@Robert – Yahoo! Messenger 7 and 10 are not able to video call together. Both users need to be on Messenger 10 to use the new video call feature. She will need to upgrade to 10, or stay on 7 and only be able to use voice calling.

I have acer laptop with builtin camera. I have attached a microsoft webcam to this laptop which shows up in control panel “Scanners and cameras ” as usb device #3. This however does not show up in Yahoo messenger web cam option ( Camera Source ). It shows two video devises usb video device followed by an identical usb video device. ( not followed by #3 ). Chosing either of these two sources loads the laptop’s builtin camera and not the attched external camera. Could some one post or email an answer?
I want to be able to use the external attached and not the builtin camera. If I disable the the internal camera by device manager will it work?
