This weekend, we released an update for the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app. This latest version fixes the issue that some users were having with the contact list disappearing upon sign in. Thank you for your patience while we worked on the issue.
To download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (v1.2.3) that includes this update, go to the iTunes App Store or tap the App Store icon on your iPhone and search for Yahoo! Messenger. If you already have Yahoo! Messenger installed, you may also have an update alert for the app.

@Sarah Bacon-
I reported this issue one or two releases ago, but the iPhone app has some significant bugs related to avatars.
First, it’s only pulling in the avatars of about half of my buddy list. The other half show as blank, despite the fact that they all have avatars.
Second, for those buddies that have updates their avatars, only the original avatar shows up on the app. The app is not properly updating the avatars.
While avatars don’t affect the functionality of the app, they do add quite a bit to the fun of using the app. Are these issues going to be addressed any time soon?

@Cedric – You’re very welcome! Glad to hear the fix cleared up your issue.

I have downloaded the yahoo messenger app to my iphone (1.2.3) and know my user id and password, but keeping getting the signon error of “Sign-In Problem, Unable to login right now, please try again later.” Not sure what I’m doing wrong. I am trying to access the site through the cell network and know that I have a strong signal. Thanks for your help.

My son just got his new iPod touch, but he can’t signed in to the Yahoo! Messenger app. When he tries he gets this message:
Yahoo! Messenger Sign-In Problem
Failed due to an known reason.
Please try again.
[Yes, it says "an known reason".]
He is using the correct credentials. In fact, I tried with a wrong password and the app told me it was incorrect. I can sign on with my account with no trouble, and his account won’t work on my iPod, either. He can, however, log in just fine on our computers (Mac & PC) and the Yahoo! app (not messenger) on his iPod.
I tried both of his sisters’ accounts, as well, and neither of them work, either. I can only deduce the problem stems from the fact that they are all Family Accounts.
I’d love to hear an explanation as to the cause of this problem. Maybe the Messenger app is confusing itself with chat (which is restricted for Family Accounts)?
Of course, I’d love even more to see this particular bug squashed.

Why isnt there a version for Windows Mobile users? the m.yahoo.com is so inconvenient, i should keep on clicking the refresh button all the time …. grrrrr

Still having a couple problems-
1) The time stamp is ridiculous- it stamps with the time I go into messenger to pick up the message. Which means I have absolutely no idea when it was sent. Yes, I have push enabled (which works fabulously, thank you!!) but if the phone is in my purse, or turned on silent if I’m in a meeting, I don’t see when a message comes in.
So please please please change it so the time stamp is from when the message was sent. It would make things so much better.
2) When someone changes their avatar, I only see the old one until I completely Reset. (Annoying, yes, but definitely not as big of an issue as #1. If you can fix problem 1, I will be incredibly happy with the app.)
Thanks!

Are there plans in place to allow chatting with Windows Live contacts from the iPhone? I enjoy this feature on the PC version and was disappointed that it was missing on the iPhone version.
Comment by Korey — September 22, 2009 #
Please add the block icons to the blocked contacts.
I cannot make the difference between block and unblock contacts.
&
Please make copy/paste text possible from a chat window to another. It will be very useful.
Thanks & good luck !

I have updated and my contact list is still missing. The list never loaded and I just get a blank screen. Even this update did not fix it for me. Advice me on any thing I can do to make yahoo messenger work again. It’s completely useless now having to rely on other messengers
Comment by Avinash — September 22, 2009 #
@Avinash – Have you tried removing the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app completely? Then restart your phone and reinstall it. Hope that helps,
Sarah Bacon
Comment by Administrator — September 22, 2009 #
@Korey – We do not have definitive plans at this time to add support for chatting with your Windows Live contacts on the iPhone version. If there is news on that, I’ll be sure to update here on the blog. Thanks,

Great news for me. Contacts show on login.
. One note that may be helpful. When doing the update via the iTunes store on the desktop, it said it updated the iPhone successfully. Logging onto YM showed that it was on 1.2.3. Unfortunately, the old issue was still there and it looked like all was lost. Later noticed that there was an update in the iTunes store that is native to the iPhone. Clicked in and saw that YM was still available for update. Using the native iPhone update reloaded YM and after that the fix was in…
Hope that helps (also seems to have fixed the issue with users showing up in multiple groups which was very annoying. Really would like to see the non-native users and a way to do stealth settings on a per user basis but otherwise, this is a very nice fix. Thanks Sarah and team…

I have problems with the yahoo messenger 123 for iphone.
1) constantly gives error msgs stating that I have been signed in from another location?
2) have a option to save conversations.
3) have a option to change photo/avatars.
basically, can we have more options as if signing on to a computer.

we are waiting for Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Go for Nokia 5800…..
Comment by Mehedi Hasan — October 2, 2009 #
Is anyone else running into the issue where once you touch the yahoo icon on the iphone, it takes at least 90 seconds for the conversation window to load? When I receive push notification of a waiting message and I touch the yahoo icon, it takes forever for the screen to load with the new message. This happens with both high strength wi-fi and Edge. Any idea why?

I am using Yahoo pingbox feature on my website so my customers can chat with me live while I am logged into Yahoo Messenger on my PC.
Is it possible for them to contact me using Yahoo Messenger for iphone 3G?
Presently this feature is not working.
Comment by Wayne Campbell — October 19, 2009 #
@Wayne Campbell – Sorry, but to be available online in your Pingbox you have to be signed into one of our desktop versions of Yahoo! Messenger, e.g. version 8, 9 or 10 for Windows, or Yahoo! Messenger for Mac. Thanks,
Sarah Bacon

Been running yahoo since it released on my iPhone 1st Gen. Recently updated to FW 3.0.1 and got the v1.2.3 update to yahoo messenger. I had a minor iPhone problem the other day and had to reapply the 3.0.1 FW for the iPhone. I restored everything and wanted to reset most of my applications. I used the Reset Yahoo button and cleared all the conversations from the iPhone. I noticed that it mentioned it would clear the contacts list. I figured that signing out and back in, that it would repopulate the buddy list. It does not repopulate the buddy list upon signing back in. I can use a 3rd party app to sign into Yahoo messenger and it populates the buddy list. I can verify that buddies are online using a Mac laptop. I see that the iPhone does sign in to the account if I leave the Mac laptop Yahoo messenger running and sign in using the iPhone, i get a message that account has signed in from a different location. Just need to figure out why the buddy list is empty and not re-populating and displaying my buddies that are online. Please help and let me know if I’m doing something wrong.
Comment by Robear — October 26, 2009 #
@Rozbear – The disappearing contact list was a bug in our previous release but has since been corrected. Try completely uninstalling the iPhone app and then downloading it again.

Ok, I have removed the application and went back to the app store to install YM v1.2.3 and restarted the application and still, buddy list is still not appearing. I had at least one buddy online checking with my Mac laptop. Is there anything else I can do or check? I removed the YM application by holding on the icon until the black x appears, selecting on the x and selecting OK to remove. Please let me know. Thank you for your time and help.

Why MSN is not connecting with this iPhone version YM? You will get a lot more user if this is supported since you already have push notification. Maybe there is some technical or financial issue on this one? Hard to imagine…
Comment by trying2use — October 30, 2009 #
To the Admin,
I have removed the YM application and installed it again. I’m still not getting the contacts list to show up. I have installed the Yahoo One Connect application from the app store that I had been using before the YM app was released. After installing the One Connect app, it successfully connects and displays the contact buddy list. Closing the One Connect application and re launching the YM app, it still fails to display any contacts that are online. Why does the Reset Yahoo button effect this application in this way? It really shouldn’t remove any contacts and should only clear resent conversations and reset any other non contact listing options in YM. This seems to be a critical issue if someone should use that button.

Guys,
I had the same issue on my Iphone. The yahoo messenger app on my iphone works fine when I’m connected to Wi-Fi. But it throws unable to Login message when I’m off the Wireless and connected to the Internet on my 3G network.
After a lot of research on the Net, I finally found the root cause. By default my network provider Vodafone has barred my content Control. When they removed this barring, my Yahoo messenger App works fine anywhere.
Check if you fall into this scenario… good luck.
