Discuss your friend’s latest update

September 15, 2009 on 3:28 pm | In 10 version | 15 Comments

In the new Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta, we introduced an alternate “Y! Updates” view of your contact list. In that view, you see a list of the latest updates from your Yahoo! friends.

Updates can come from your friends’ activity on Yahoo! sites like Buzz, Movies, Answers, Flickr, just to name a few. Or they can create updates by using other social sites on the internet such as Twitter, last.fm, Stumbleupon and more. More on updates

When you’re in the Y! Updates view, it’s also easy to IM your friend to chat about a particular update. Hover your mouse on their update until you see a dropdown arrow menu appear. Click on it and choose “Instant Message”. This will open a new IM window with the update snippet inline in the conversation.

If your friend is also on Yahoo! Messenger 10, they’ll see the update inline in their IM window. It’s a great way to start a conversation about their latest update. And when you do, they’ll know what you’re referring to.

Even if you don’t have an update from a friend, you can still easily IM, SMS or video call them from the Y! Updates view. Just use the contact action bar at the top of the list to find your friend. Hover on their name in the search results and click a contact method like IM, call, SMS or email, from their contact card.

  1. Now if there was some way to control it besides killing it all off in your profile.

I would also like to have control over an IM alias status reporting in Messenger.

I had a comment on a profile show up in my work alias IM status. Not so good.

  2. I like the direction Yahoo is heading with this. I’m hoping in time we can get additional sites on board. Keep up the good work. One suggestion would be to allow an easier way to make contacts/connections – possibly to search by city or profession.

  3. Is Yahoo having server issues?

I get locked out of chatrooms very often now. Can’t log in through the captcha and I also get an error message claiming the “validation session has either expired or a servers error occured – please join the chatroom again”.

No matter how many times I try and no matter which chatroom I try, I get the same error.

  4. It’s still pretty useless to me. I can’t really use it to keep up with my twitter or facebook streams. Most of my contacts haven’t set up Yahoo Profiles or filled out the account links.

  7. Can YAHOO! to put a feature like this:
[checkbox] “Allow links in the conversation windows and my contact list” ?
    Thank You

  8. This feature doesn’t work very well as my tweets would update on Yahoo the day after I posted them.
Make sure you fix this when 10 is released and everybody should be happy!
Oh… one more request: since I switched to Ubuntu, could you realease a YM client for it?

  9. Sorry guys, had to give up on Y!Messenger….

The push notifications were down for iPhone the other day (all day!) but AIM was working fine. I rebooted my iPhone, so did my wife, and sure enough….no push notifications for Y!Messenger were going through. I thought it odd since I usually get at least 1-2 a day. I tested AIM and the notifications were going through just fine. I liked Y!Messenger better but until the reliability is at least that of AIM, I won’t be using it.

  11. I downloaded the YM10 beta and found out that I could not use some of the services like voice call to a friend who has YM9. I deleted YM10 and installed the YM 9 version. Now I cant connect to the voice service to make calls from pc to pc, it says connecting to voice service but does not connect at all. I use the same broadband service to my desktop and there I can make pc to pc calls.
    What could be the reason?
