9 things NOT in 9 for 9-9-09

September 9, 2009 on 12:01 am | In 10 version | 22 Comments

If you’re into numerology, today is a special day. Aside from the date looking and sounding cool, today’s date represents the last set of repeating, single-digit dates that we’ll see for almost a century (until January 1, 2101).

So in keeping with all things 9 today, I thought I’d list out 9 things that aren’t in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0. Or in other words, nine reasons why you should try out the new Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta. Here we go…

9) Much improved 1:1 video calling

8 ) A new alternative view called “Y! Updates” that shows you what your friends are up to on Yahoo! and on other social websites

7) Choose from 16 languages at sign-in or under Messenger > Preferences > Language

6) A new way to sort your contacts – by availability or by recent activity

5) A new Insider with more news, Yahoo! Mail and weather [OK, technically 9.0 has this too but 10 had it first!]

4) When you IM a friend about their latest update in the Y! Updates view, the update shows inline in the IM window so you can both refer to it

3) More controls for Yahoo! Updates. Decide what types of updates you want to see and from whom. Go to Messenger > Preferences > Yahoo! Updates

2) Updated icons in the IM window

1) Because it’s new!

For more details on these new features, view our Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta article from launch day. Or watch the demo video:

We hope you’ll try out Yahoo! Messenger 10! When you do, be sure to send us your feedback by going to the Help menu and selecting “Send Feedback”.

  6. Sarah B.,

I’d like to provide you with 9 features I’d like to see in YIM10 when it comes out of Beta.

    1) A brand new UI with Aero Effects.
    2) Windows 7 Jumplist support
    3) A WMP and Yahoo Status synchronizer.
    4) Tabbed Windows.
    5) An option that integrates the main window with conversation windows.
    6) Various tabs allowing you to email people directly from Yahoo IM.
    7) More options on what sections of the Main Yahoo IM windows you can show and hide.
    8) More options on what sections you can show and hide of the Conversation windows, especially conference windows.
    9) Search feature for the Message Archive.

I sincerely hope you will take these features into consideration. Features like these will help yahoo to succeed. Yahoo Messenger service is wonderful in my opinion, however, the program is falling VERY behind in development and imagination in comparison to Windows Live messenger, and digsby.

    Good luck with future development!

  7. @Alex – Thanks for your suggestions. What do you mean by “An option that integrates the main window with conversation windows”? Thanks

  8. You guys really need to do something about the bots in the Yahoo Chat rooms. Over 75% of “users” in each chat room are now bots. In fact, probably over 75% of rooms are filled entirely by bots so you can’t even get into them. The CAPTCHA system has obviously failed to do anything other than make it more annoying for real people to get into chat.

Here’s an idea: why don’t you all hire enough people to put a paid Yahoo employee as an admin inside each chat room with the power to kick out the bots?

Either that, or make “infinite ignore lists” so I never run out of room to ignore more bots.

Skype has this great feature that keeps the buddy list and conversation windows in one window. It’s great for those of us who do a lot of multitasking. Rather than having all our conversations spread across our desktop, it’s all one window, with our buddy list. It’s an amazingly useful feature.

  12. you will have to drag me kicking and screaming to install y10. why? i couldn’t care about videos calling! you can do that just fine in y9 by going into a private conference with voice and turn each others cams on!
i really couldn’t care less what other people are doing online or where they go. so i don’t care to see updates. when i am forced to take this? and i am sure i will be. i do hope you will give the options of turning all that crap off.

  14. @saurabh khajanchi – Are you using the India version of Yahoo! Messenger? If you are, that version does not support any voice features. You’ll need to install the U.S. version at http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/winbeta to get voice features.

  15. I (and so many other users) would love to see Yahoo Messenger 10 with Aero glass and updated with all new icons (similar to the Mac version). I think you guys would gain market share if you could do this. It would be cool if you could design it similar to the Vista version, which was really cool!

Hello. I would like to show you a concept image I made in spare time. While this concept is not very yahoo’y, I think it will give you an idea of where I’d like to see Yahoo go one day, warning, it is quite a large image.

    http://i227.photobucket.com/albums/dd7/Alex_Nova92/IMConceptWIP.jpg

Allow me to be clear in saying this is NOT what I expect any Yahoo UI to look like, as I said, it’s not very yahoo’y, however, I would like you to consider the concepts held with in the image, such as Aero effects, combined buddylist and chat windows, so on and so forth.

  18. Does Y10 still come with spambots and booters
Seriously when Yahoo implemented the captcha system you should of consulted with a software security expert they could of told you in 2007 that captcha’s were already easily defeated and that it was as temp. solution at best.

Yahoo should consider consulting now with a software security expert as the spambot and booter problem is easily a solvable solution, has been for years.

I also have a few other improvements I would like to see, Yahoo Messenger is hard on resources, just watching Y! Messenger make over 1000 registry request in a second is a good indication, so I would love to see future Y! Messenger code cleaned etc.

Other then that it’s not bad.

  19. Lisa is a Yahoo! Messenger Power User :-)

Please let me ask again, are there any news about the YM Power User Program? I’d really like to know if there are future plans for the program. A real confirmation would be great! (I’d prefer Sarah Bacon to confirm hence she is the only one who knows what is going on)

    Thank you.

  20. Sarah,

Has Yahoo given up on the chat rooms? It would seem so.

Captcha is useless and should be removed. Bots have now pretty much overrun every room.

    Its a real shame.

  21. Hi

I watched the demo video for v10 and to be honest you didn’t convince me to even try it out, no offence.
The new video features might come in handy someday, but since I seldom do any video chat i’m neutral about that.
On the other hand, I read through the comments and I agree with what Alex(comment written on the 9th of September) had to say – i’d like most of those features.
Hopefully you’ll be able to implement some of his ideas
