Update to Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta
September 3, 2009 on 11:30 am | In Mac version | 108 Comments
An updated version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 is now available.
This latest version includes a couple of new features and many bug fixes to help enhance overall stability and performance. Other changes were made to ensure compatibility with Apple’s latest version of OS X, Snow Leopard.
For the first time, Insider is now available in Yahoo! Messenger for Mac. The new version of Insider offers quick access to the latest news, including local news for U.S. locations. You can also check the weather, see what awaits you in your Yahoo! Mail inbox, or easily search the web, images or video.
This latest version also includes a “Report a Problem” feature to make it easier for Mac users to report technical issues they’re experiencing. To access it, click on the Help menu and select “Report a Problem to Yahoo!”.
From there you can select the feature area that relates to your issue (sign in, messaging, webcam etc.), and then describe the problem you’re having. We really appreciate it when you submit your problems this way as the diagnostic information that’s included helps us better troubleshoot the issue.
Download Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta
As always, we appreciate your feedback which you can submit by going to the Help menu in the Mac version and selecting “Send Feedback”.
We hope you enjoy this latest version!

Since I installed the new one, messenger will no longer work. Tried to re downloading, and still, it just starts to log in, and spins and spins.

I would hope growl was pulled (or updated to 1.2b1 sent to mailing list) to amke sure the old growl isn’t leaking memory and causing issues with messenger since the current release is a mess on leopard.

The Mac version of YM look so much better than the Windows version. It doesn’t have that crappy skin which stands out from the native OS UI. It’s not polluted with buttons and icons, just the main necessary ones. I’m so jealous.

The growl beta that actually supports 10.6 (not out of date framework still embedded in YM)

Yea mobile messenger for the iPhone still does not work for me, every time i try to log in it says, “Unable to login for an unknown reason, please try again.”
Comment by Foodmanchew — September 4, 2009 #
And to justify my post not being out of context, I am writing it here to indicate Yahoo really needs to plan and start developing a cross plateform Yahoo Messenger instead of maintaining a seperate Mac version which has been lagging in features and updates for obvious overhead it creates to maintain two versions for two OS. With Netbooks and Linux based phones (Nokia’s Maemo OS and Google’s Android OS) you are going to have to maintain yet another voice call and video call capable messenger version.

This has been a long time since I used yahoo msg. Because I am using Ubuntu. Is there any plan for releasing a version for Ubuntu?
Comment by Maq — September 7, 2009 #
Nice update, however, I wish the rest of Yahoo’s apps were as integrated w/ the Mac as this one.
Comment by John — September 7, 2009 #
@Maq – At this time there are no plans to release an Ubuntu version.

I already sent a problem report about this: I’m on Leopard (10.5.8) and after updating to this version I can no longer see the contact list. Messenger logs me in but hangs at the loading spinner and then the application locks up and I have to force quit it. (And yes, I “uninstalled” Yahoo Messenger using AppZapper and then reinstalling it – no result.)
Thanks to Time Machine I was able to revert to the previous version, otherwise it would have been Adium for me (aka no audio chat and no file transfer support.)
About Saurabh’s comment about keeping a cross-platform version: all I really miss from the Windows version is the Photo Sharing thing. I really don’t want that dreadful interface or the *shivers* banner at the bottom of the contact list. People coming from Windows who see the Mac version of Y!M go “Wow! This is Yahoo Messenger?! It looks SOO nice! What theme are you using?”
Comment by Andrei — September 8, 2009 #
I downloaded the latest version but Yahoo! Insider won’t work for me. It doesn’t load when I sign in and I can’t find it anywhere.
Comment by Ashley — September 8, 2009 #
It still doesnt have all of the features of the microsoft edition, such as photo share, after being a beta for years.
Comment by Justin — September 8, 2009 #
why is it only “3.0 beta”? mine is 3.0 beta 4,, so is it beta 5??
besides, if this is an upgrade, why i cant find it with “Help > Check for Updates…” ????

I know you’ll just delete my comment Sarah.. but I’ll post anyway. I’m glad you at least are still putting out maintenance releases for us Mac users. But Insider.. as a new feature? Come on. It’s a way to plug yahoo content, but it’s more like popup than a new feature. How about photo sharing? Or games? Something we’d actually want.
THAT would be awesome.
Comment by patrick — September 11, 2009 #
Maybe it’s me but, I don’t really care for the Yahoo Insider thing. That could had been left out IMO.

3.0 doesn’t work. Where can I get the previous version?
Comment by olderversionplease — September 11, 2009 #
Well, you asked for comment, Sarah!
I have just downloaded the latest version, as prompted to by Yahoo Messenger itself. Like people have found, it just hangs on the spinner during login. It’s a serious mess and it has just undermined itself for me and many others. This can’t possibly have been thoroughly tested.
Please respond to mine and other comments and let us know when this will be fixed.
Thank you.

Comment by Jake Edmonds — September 12, 2009 #
I installed the new update.
All the contacts in my address book are named only with Nicknames. The older version of Y!IM used to display the nicknames if no first or last name was available.
Can you please fix this?
Comment by John — September 12, 2009 #
Sorry, Sarah. Delete this comment if you will, but that won’t change the fact that this update was a sheer waste of time.
Insider? Really? Er… how many people here actually read Insider? How about putting up a functional feature that mac users have been begging for for YEARS instead of a useless one that people don’t even need? Why are themes such an issue? Granted, it’s been awhile, but Google’s Chrome browser for mac is to be theme-compatible, so we all know it can be done–and it’s not taking this long to do either. And what’s up with photo sharing? Why are you doing this to your consumers, Sarah, Yahoo? Why not give us something we actually want in an update instead of a silly “report errors” feature? We can all appreciate a good bug/compatibility fix, but please don’t insult us with such useless features while continually and flat-out IGNORING any and all pleas for what we really want. You don’t even give us a yes or no, or even a “Shut up, dog!” You just ignore us. How do you think that makes your consumers feel?
Yahoo’s customer service to the Mac experience is horrible. Many people have been generous enough or naive enough to continually congratulate your efforts to make Yahoo Messenger better. I’m usually one of those people. You see, we all appreciate effort, but there are those people like me who can only stay so optimistic for so long before finally giving in and saying “What the heck is going on, and why are we not getting what we need? Why are you ignoring us?”
I’m tired of being ignored, Yahoo. Please fix this soon.
Comment by Wolfe — September 12, 2009 #
Same for me – ever since installing the ‘upgrade’ Yahoo Messenger will not work for me. Spinning circle, force quit, etc.
Perhaps the friendly folks at Yahoo could post a link to download the previous version again. Now if I want to access yahoo I have to use the web messenger – yuck.

Comment by sw — September 13, 2009 #
i was confused when i got the update notice since we’re moving from 3.0.4 to 3.0.. seems like a backward move.
i updated anyway, hoping to get better webcam and audio support since lately my yahoo messenger’s webcam’s been real slow and crashing (same thing happens with the person i’m chatting with), and audio’s been seriously lagging. File transfer’s been having lots of errors, Also when i plug in or out of a usb device the webcam goes off and i cant switch on again unless i sign out and back in.
So now i’m on the updated 3.0 version —- and i’m experiencing the SAME PROBLEMS!
Will someone PLEASE fix the problems instead of coming up with redundant stuff like yahoo insider?

POSSIBLE SOLUTION TO SPINNING PROBLEM:
When I downloaded the updated, I noticed the program was running very slow, but whatever. However, all of a sudden, I got the spinning circle. I reinstalled the software, but that didn’t help. I tried to login with a different Yahoo ID, and it worked like a charm, so I figured the problem had to do with my old profile. I backed up the conversation logs by doing the following: Go to your user folder, then Library, then Application Support, then Yahoo! Messenger, and move the Logs folder to another location (I dragged it to my Desktop). After backing it up, I deleted the Yahoo! Messenger folder in Application Support. Also, I deleted the following folder: Your User > Library > Caches > Yahoo! Messenger (this folder contains some files including Display Pictures for both contacts and yourself). Later, I deleted the following file which contains your preferences like your saved Yahoo ID and password, your Custom Status messages, and general preferences: Your User > Library > Preferences > the file name should be something like com.yahoo.messenger3.Users.YourYahooID.plist. Then, I uninstalled the program from the Application folder and removed the icon in my Dock (all of this because I’d rather be safe than sorry); I believe this guarantees the software has been removed completely from your computer. Afterwards, I just reinstalled and I was able to login no problem. If you need to restore your logs, you should just move the folder you backed up to the location you took it from and replace the existing one (in my case it was empty). Please be aware that this solution worked for me, I AM NOT SAYING THIS IS THE SOLUTION THAT WILL WORK FOR YOU! ALSO, THIS IS NOT REALLY A SOLUTION, JUST A WORKAROUND TO A PROBLEM THAT YAHOO SHOULD LOOK INTO AS MANY PEOPLE ARE EXPERIENCING IT. I will check this thread the following days so please let me know whether this worked for you or not

I’m running Snow Leopard – and was told by a tech savvy friend that the problem might be that Snow Leopard is running at 64bit whereas most other programs are still on 32bit. I have no idea what that means, but I do know that since I installed the update, yahoo has not worked! I was able to sign in the first day, but not able to send any files or use the webcam. Now I can’t even sign in, I just get the spinning “ball of death”.
I have to agree with some other people on here, and ask if this program was properly tested? PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE give us a link to the old version. This new one is not ready for use.
Comment by Cassandra — September 14, 2009 #
Oy!…post the old version. I too can not access my yahoo messenger now. I don’t even get a spinning icon. The program simple just refuses to open up. grrrrrrrrrr

Helloooo…Yahoooo, is anyone listening? I uploaded the new beta version and now nothing works. The program will not run at all. It appears that Yahoo has completely abandoned the Mac users. Really sad, as I have been a faithful, longtime user that really loved the app.
Please post the older version that actually worked, or fix this current buggy piece of poo!
Comment by Michael — September 15, 2009 #
I don’t think Sarah likes us. We probably seem like a bunch of loud right wing Conservatives at a Dem. Congresswoman’s town hall meeeting.
Really, it’s nothing personal. We just need a link to the Beta 2 version (I think) to download, that actually worked.
Comment by Yang — September 15, 2009 #
As Wolfe and some others have commented. We like that there is at least some work on YM for the MAC, but would would love to see the feature set catch up with the PC version. Can we at the VERY LEAST, get a post on the blog saying that you at least hear us and are working on this, or that there is no planned support for those features (so we can just move on!) You give that message about a Ubuntu version to @Maq above, can we get the same satisfaction? Just please tell us Yes or No if yahoo is even thinking about adding features like Photo Sharing (as listed in the feature compare, this is even in the iPhone app??), Address Book integration, and Games. Just to name a few.
Thanks (Please)

I have yet to see any Windows user look at YIM for Mac and say OOH, this looks so nice! The banner thing aside (personally I’d rather have a little unobtrusive banner if it would mean something more enjoyable to look at), YIM for Mac looks EXACTLY like eeeeeeverything else on a Mac (with the exception of things such as Google Chrome and DivX player, who have stepped up and dared to be refreshingly different). The “theme” YIM for Mac uses is the standard Mac UI (user interface). Think about using something like the Windows Control Panel (the classic Windows 98 style, not the remade XP-Vista-7 ones) for a messenger interface and you’ll see what we’re dealing with here. We like the way Mac looks, but that doesn’t mean EVERYTHING has to look like it–especially when we KNOW there’s an alternative that Yahoo is keeping from us for some unfathomable reason–maybe even deliberately. Who knows? We’ve asked and asked and gotten zip in reply.
Comment by Wolfe — September 15, 2009 #
Is there any way to disable the Insider?
Also, will there be a 64-bit release of YM soon?
Thanks.
Comment by Marian — September 16, 2009 #
Today i logged out of my messenger (newly updated 3.0) for a few minutes and after that i just can’t log back in at all. It keeps telling me i entered the incorrect login credentials when everything was correctly entered. I freaked out!
I then tried signing in on my other machine which is the earlier 3.0.4 version running on imac, and same thing, kept telling me incorrect credentials!!
I tried logging in on my iphone chat apps (incl. the yahoo one) and it worked ok. I’m able to sign into yahoo mail and web messenger with no problems, so it seems the server for the yahoo mac messenger itself just wont recognize my details all of a sudden.
I reinstalled YM but it didnt help.
This is getting really really frustrating!! HELP!!!
Comment by hovanvan — September 16, 2009 #
Andrei,
Yeah, my comment just before the one you read (which was moderated for some other reasons), mentioned replacing the advertises in the main messanger window and chat rooms by “Yahoo Shortcuts”. If you are not familiar with Yahoo Shortcuts, they are softlinks (dotted underlines on some words) that show you yahoo search results, yahoo maps, yahoo movies or yahoo stock results for a words in your chats. Right now they have this only in Yahoo Mail.
Comment by Saurabh — September 16, 2009 #
I am running Y!Messenger on Snow Leopard and it seems to work quite well. My only complaint is that stealth implementation is quite trivial, as it does not allow to set a custom status message while being available for a limited group of buddies. That means that whenever you are invisible for 90% of the list and you want to set a status message, that automatically makes you [and your custom status message] available for 100% of the buddies in your list [maybe, except for the ones in the ignore list
]. That being, said, Y!M works fine for me, but I feel with my fellas Y!M users that do not seem to be enjoying the same functionality as I do.
However, provided the fact that Y!M is a free service, the consumer’s attitude should not be that demanding [even if they (aka we) are right]…
yours…
Comment by cedric — September 17, 2009 #
@Cedric
You know, I thought about that some time ago. It’s true that service is free, but is that really an excuse? Many free services are offered for both Windows and Mac, and it’s not common for the companies who offer the services to be so (purposely?) neglectful to one side over another. Even Microsoft Messenger, who is also behind the times on the Mac front, has enough decency to respond to their users and tell them what’s in the works, and not have the gall to pass off new message notification as a “new” feature.

After trying all the suggestions, nothing worked so I went back to my troubleshooting steps and was able get it to work for me.
I went into my /Library/Quicktime folder and removed everything except the two codecs required by iMovie (AppleIntermediateCodec and AppleMPEG2Codec). You have to restart since they are system level codecs.
After a restart, I went straight to Yahoo Messenger and it started right up. Webcam works fine as well.
I do a lot of video work so I had to pull 12 codecs out of the Quicktime folder, so I will have to test them one at a time putting them back to see which was the culprit.
Either way, Yahoo Messenger is working like a charm now. I hope this proves useful for someone.

With so many comments, most of them negative, it’s surprising that there is no response from Yahoo. Anyway, I am using version 3.0 beta (build 191946) and my display image has never worked since I downloaded that version. I am still on Mac 10.5 Leopard (not the snow version). I am just glad it’s a minor issue (I can live without people looking at my profile display although it seems as such a waste if there is a feature that doesn’t work). I am also glad that my main messenger and VOIP service is not Yahoo.
Comment by Avigayil — December 2, 2009 #

What finally got my isight in the last version to work, and then the upgrade to this version, was to do as Ron said and go into your quicktime folder and remove things. I also completely deleted all the yahoo files and folders from the computer, as explained earlier in this thread.
mac hd/library/quicktime ….. and for me, I removed everything except the flip4mac stuff. I reinstalled the last build that worked, and then upgraded to the newest, and it signs in and isight works.
Hope this helps.

I’m using the newer version, 192773 for Mac on both Snow Leopard (macbook) and on Leopard (G5 PPC) and again the display image doesn’t work. The online help in yahoo answers is just PC related and yet again Yahoo has failed to bring out a version that even does what it says it does on the tin. Very disappointing.
When’s there a new version which does support this again, Sarah?

Please allow us Mac users to make the incoming webcam image larger. Fu screen would be nice, but any improvement over that little 2″X2″ image of the person I’m chatting with would be something. half screen, quarter screen even just getting to 4X4 would be much better

We love our Kindle Fire, but as many people have said it has some drawbacks when compared to the iPad, especially on size and power. But I’m impressed with the new specs of the Kindle Fire 2 with the 10inch screen. Some of the new specs are at kindlemad.com and I think they will be opening up pre-orders soon.
