Tips for making video calls in Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta

August 27, 2009 on 1:51 pm | In 10 version | 71 Comments

Hopefully many of you have been able to try out the new video call feature in Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta. We’ve heard from some of you that you’re enjoying it, but we’ve also heard that some are having problems with the feature.

Here is a short FAQ about video calling in Yahoo! Messenger 10, including some troubleshooting steps to take if you are having issues.

Is there a minimum set of requirements that I need to meet before I can make video calls?
Yes, there are and you can see the complete list of requirements on our help page. Below are a few tips for ensuring the best video call experience:

- A computer with the Windows XP operating system or later, a 1 GHz CPU processor and 512 MB of RAM.
- Broadband Internet connection speed: Minimum of 300 Kbps download and 128 Kbps upload.
- Video card: Minimum of 96 MB memory.
- Webcam: Follow manufacturer instructions for ensuring proper webcam installation, including the use of the installation CD.
- Be sure you have the latest version of Microsoft DirectX® installed.

To test whether your webcam will work with our video call feature, go to our webcam detection help page.

I meet the minimum requirements. Can I start my video call?
Yes but we advise you that you go through the recommended steps to make your first video call. This can help you avoid most issues or problems. For example, make sure you run the video and voice call setup wizard before you place your first call. You’ll find it under Messenger > Preferences > Video & Voice Devices > “Open Video and Voice Setup” link.

Why is the Video Call button greyed out in my IM window?
Video calling is only available to users on Yahoo! Messenger 10. You and your friend both need to have Yahoo! Messenger 10 installed to make video calls. If your friend is not sure of their version, tell them to go to Help > About Yahoo! Messenger and check the version number. If they’re not on 10, they can download it from the Yahoo! Messenger website.

Why does my video call hang up after ringing for several seconds with no answer?
There is no voicemail available for video calls. As a result, your call will ring and then automatically hang up if no one answers after several seconds.

I have my webcam connected – however, the Video and Voice Setup instruction within Messenger cannot detect my Webcam?
To diagnose this issue, please try the following:

1) Connect your webcam to the computer and go to the webcam detection page.

2) If you are unable to see your own video at the above link, please follow instructions from your webcam manufacturer’s installation CD to install the webcam drivers. This should fix your webcam detection problem that you are facing. If you no longer have the CD, visit the manufacturer’s website; they typically offer the latest drivers in their support section.

3) If you are able to see your own video then please submit your messenger diagnostic logs for us to debug the issue. Get instructions on how to submit your logs

My friend’s video does not appear (window appears black) during a video call
There could be several reasons why your friend’s video does not appear during a video call. First, ensure that your friend is also on Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta. If they are but their video still does not appear, then please ask your friend to follow the instructions here to help figure out the problem.

We appreciate your patience and help in making sure that our new Beta can work with as many webcams as possible. Thanks,

I like this new version, but guys where is the Always on Top option for the Video Screen where I see the buddy from the video chat?

That is an absolute must if you want to put the video on top of the screen so you can do other things while conferencing.

I have an internal mic on both computers and all the setting are correct, nothing muted, etc. I did the calibration for the internal mic and it worked fine – system heard me state each phrase, etc. Can someone please tell me what to do to enable people to hear me when I phone. This is maddening!

  19. [...] In addition to both parties needing Yahoo Messenger 10 beta on their Windows computers, there are some basic system requirements. You’ll need Windows XP at least, with a 1 GHz CPU processor and 512 MB of RAM. Your broadband internet will require a minimum of 300 Kbps download speed and a minimumand 128 Kbps upload (test both here). Then there’s the video card. You’ll need at least 96 MB memory. A Webcam is mandatory to output video calls (but not to see a buddy’s video. You will, however, receive an alert on your end.)   22. I have a question to Mrs/Ms. Sarah Bacon;

It is not Yahoo Messenger 10 related but it is a general Yahoo! Messenger question.

I would like to know if your Yahoo! Messener Power User program still available. I mean, will Yahoo! continue to invite more people to join the program or is it over with the invitations? I just want to know if there is hope for more invitations to the Yahoo! Messenger Power User program. I’ve also sent a short e-mail to Yahoo! Messenger Customer support last night but haven’t received any answer yet. (guess Yahoo! Customer Care team knows that my question is not very urgent and/or important)

    Thank you

    Comment by robert szombati — September 1, 2009 #

  23. @robert

The power user program is only available to U.S. Yahoo users. Which I find very unfair. What about the rest of the world Yahoo!? Do we not count.

    Comment by SGFC — September 1, 2009 #

  24. @Robert – Unfortunately I do not know what the plans are for the Power User program. If I get any updates, I will let you all know. Thanks

    Sarah Bacon

    Comment by Administrator — September 1, 2009 #

  25. @SGFC – I get your point. My account is a *.yahoo.com account, doesn’t that mean that I use the US service? Some of my buddies also have that rank and they are from the same country as me (not US) but they also use yahoo.com. And also, I am using Yahoo! Messenger since 2001 now, every day and that’s why I was wondering..

@Sarah Bacon – Thank you, I will look forward for your answer regarding the Yahoo! Messenger Power User program.

    Comment by robert szombati — September 1, 2009 #

  26. Hello
Is there any button only for the webcam, like in the older messenger? or there are buttons just for the video and voice call? It’s annoying that we have to go to Actions menu/More actions/invite to view webcam and then choose between video call and webcam. It would be nicer if there was an arrow where the video call is, so we can choose from a video call and a webcam.

    Comment by Crispy — September 2, 2009 #

  27. @robert

I can assure you that Yahoo will NOT add more users to their Y!M power users program. The last time they added some users was in April this year and since then nothing happend.BUT still i find it unfair because they still have that page (when you click on the crown on your buddy who has the power user rank) with all that “bla bla” to get the power user rank and the help page with all the ym power users info.WHY dont you delete that page already Yahoo If you know this thing is no more available?MY advice for robert and to all other “faithful” yahoo messenger users out there is to stop dreaming and hoping!YOU peole were unlucky you havent been invited to that program by now.Yahoo messenger will NOT add more power users to their program and that is final! They already have chosen a lot of people and they know it is enough!

    CHEERS!

    Comment by Andy G — September 3, 2009 #

  28. Ohh that’s too bad. I just kept hoping to get that special crown someday. I wanted to feel special too, you know. ;-)

Andy – may I ask, where did you get this information from?

I already tried fixing the connection and my firewall but still not yet working. I jus really want to call but i tried finding some solutions still not working.

    thanks.

    Comment by debbie — September 4, 2009 #

  30. @debbie – are you using Yahoo! Messenger behind a proxy server? If not, just make sure the “connect directly to the internet” tab in your Yahoo! Messenger preferences, in the connection section is checked.

Also if you’re behind a wireless router, make sure you set it up properly. Yahoo! Messengers Voice and Video ports needs to be open in order to use these features (refer to your wireless router users manual for how to open ports).

    Good luck

  33. In YM ver 9.x I used to be able to just “invite this contact to view my webcam” in chat mode only (not video calling), but now in Beta 10 that button no longer avail..

I thought there would be user out there who prefers to type & not necessary have to be on the call while on webcam.

    Comment by Harry H — September 7, 2009 #

  34. Harry,

the webcam button is missing in Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta sadly, but let’s hope that Yahoo! will re-implement this feature in the fnal version.

However, you can still invite people to see your webcam by clicking on Actions -> More Actions, and there you have “Invite to View My Webcam”. Your webcam will start just like in Yahoo! Messenger 9 without the calling feature.

  58. Yahoo’s new Video Call feature works great, or at least it does if both parties have a high-speed connection, a fast computer running Windows 7, and a decent webcam. The resolution is fantastic, even in full screen and watching both cams, the motion is smooth, not jerky like with the regular cam, and the audio is crisp and clear.

Two suggestions for improvements, which I imagine are on the drawing board anyway:

    1. When in full screen mode, it would be nice to be able to send text messages as users may not always be able to talk, such as in an office or public setting.

    2. I would like to save Video Calls just as I can save text sessions. I tried using video capture software that works well with other programs, but it doesn’t capture Yahoo Video Calls properly — on playback, the video runs at double or triple normal speed, and I could find no way to alter that.

Other than these minor gripes, I have no suggestions. Version 10 is a great leap forward because of the new Video Call feature. Kudos to Yahoo’s software developers!
