Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone 1.2.2 now available

August 25, 2009 on 10:53 am | In iphone | 121 Comments

Thanks to everyone who has been using and providing feedback on our latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone.

Based on your helpful input, we’ve made lots of updates to this version which is now available in the iPhone App Store. Here’s what’s new / changed:

No more Idle status
Now when you exit the Yahoo! Messenger app on your iPhone but are still signed in, you’ll show as available to your friends rather than Idle. We agreed – showing up as idle didn’t make great sense since you want people to IM you.

Buzz got better
Ok, not every feature off the blocks is perfect and this one took some tweaking. In this version we’ve refined the Buzz notification sound and added a preference to turn Buzz on or off in the event you don’t want to use it (under Settings).

We also added vibrating notifications when you send or receive a Buzz. And if you’re in a conversation with someone and another friend buzzes you, you’ll see a notice on the screen.

New notification sound
Oh your bleeding ears! We heard you didn’t like the new IM notification sound so we changed it up a bit. Karl the engineer describes it as “shorter and prettier”. We hope you agree.

Fixed the address book integration
The iPhone address book integration faltered in our last version so we fixed it in 1.2.2. Now when you’re composing a new SMS for example, you’ll be able to access numbers in your iPhone address book, not just in Yahoo! Messenger.

We also tweaked a few things to address some bugs, crash and login issues.

To download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (v1.2.2) that includes these updates, go to the iTunes App Store or tap the App Store icon on your iPhone and search for Yahoo! Messenger. If you already have Yahoo! Messenger installed, you may also have an update alert for the app.

As always, please use the Report Problem feature in the app if you run into any issues. You’ll find it under “Settings” in the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app.

  1. Just installed new version and experienced a bug after first launch: Only one contact was being shown to me, even though I knew there were more online. Went into settings, turned ON show offline contacts, and then all my contacts were shown to me. Logged out, logged in, turned OFF showing offline contacts, and everything seemed fine.

So looks like there may be a small bug hiding in the code related to the ’show offline contacts’ setting.

  2. I wish that you could be able to make an avator on the iphone and be able to choose different colors from everything such as backgroud to the text boxes. And custom sounds for each contact and be able to go through the contacts in our phone. Overall very nice app Sarah way better than AOL which only keeps you loged in for hours instead off weeks like yahoo does.

  3. ok, got the update

    1. still no stealth settings – why?!
    2. the notification sound is the same!! only is has less delay (echo) – shame, i will disable it, asap (great work, to your engineer, Karl!)
    3. ok, no idle status, but when will you go idle? never, right? some of us don’t like being idle, after leaving the app, but have you thought making a setting to enable/ disable or adjusting the time untill you go ‘idle’? this will please both sides.
    4. still not being able to view entire conversation!!! this is ridiculous!
    5. still not able to change change your avatar directly from the app (camara acces – take photo / use current)
    6. the avatar in the app does not update, i’ve changed 6 avatars since i’ve first used the app, and it displays the one that i first log’d in on the iphone, but the pc version shows the actual avatar. this is a bug, right?

no need to answer this, Sarah, don’t botter.

    Comment by someone — August 25, 2009 #

  4. @someone – Stealth settings are part of the app. You have the option to sign in as invisible or to set yourself to invisible under “Settings”. However there are no per user stealth settings.

Thanks for the other items – I will pass them onto the team.

I’m wondering if there is any consideration of yahoo messenger for Android in Yahoo Messenger team?

  7. @Sarah – per user stealth settings i was reffering to, this is one feature that most of us, need.

now i’m trying to downgrade to version 1.2.1 (luckily for me, i have saved the 1.2.1 ipa in my pc) why do this? because of the non-idle option, i was getting used to it:)

However, this update 1.2.2. Didn’t fix the contacts disappearing issue. I still cannot see any contacts on the buddy list!

  13. Couple of issues and concerns
    1. Push notification did not work after reinstall. I had to reboot phone for it to work.
    2. Sound is still awful. It would be best if you can have a setting to select from a variety of sounds (if possible). A sound similar to iphone SMS notification is the best (for me )
    3. Good work on keeping the loading time of app reasonable. This is my biggest concern as many IM apps have extremely slow load time and frequent crashes that makes them useless.

    Thanks.

  16. yes, yes. a lot of updates for iPhone applications but the mac messenger is in beta phase for more than 3 years…
may be you should charge 0.99$ for the Mac OSX version too, may be then we would see some development on that front.

  20. I had Yahoo Messenger App on my Blackberry Pearl and really miss it. On the Blackberry you could do everything just as if you were on the PC. For example, the stealth mode (being alerted when someone you were waiting for to sign on signed on), changing your sign on pic right from the app. I really like Yahoo Messenger out of all the rest and hope that they will soon update to be able to do everything that I was able to do on my Blackberry.

  22. I agree- steath settings for individual contacts would be nice, but I would also like to change it for an entire group of contacts too. I like being only online to certain friends/family at night, and it would be a pain to have to change every individual contact in a group.

    Comment by mostejo — August 26, 2009 #

  23. It would be nice to get the idle option back (even if it would not be the default behavior). Also, there’s a new bug in this version: many times after I start the app I can’t see anyone in the list. I need to restart it to get my list populated.

  24. @ Sarah

My wife and I were using AIM for the iPhone to save money and drop SMS from our phone plan–instead of sending SMS messages, we now send IMs and it works great w/ iPhone 3.0.

We switched to yahoo messenger a little over a week ago and haven’t looked back at AIM since. Messenger loads a lot faster than AIM, it doesn’t require you to log in daily, it’s not as ‘glitchy’ (as my wife says), and it has a paging (BUZZ) feature.

Anyway, just thought I’d share that at another two more people are using messenger b/c of your teams’ efforts.

    Thanks!

  32. I have Yahoo Messenger on both a Blackberry Storm and iphone 3g. So far, here is what I notice:

    1. the iphone version has lackluster sounds/notifications. On the Storm, I can change the notification settings based on where I am (at work I want to be discreet and not have the Yahoo chat thread pop up on my front screen, but at home that’s fine! Plus I can change the sound settings on JUST messenger, and not the whole phone! So my phone ring can be loud, and my YM sound can be half the volume. Or I can set it to simply vibrate when an IM comes in and turn ALL other sounds off–such as the sound when you open the app. PLEASE give us versatility to chose different sound/alert “profiles” like the blackberry).
    2. Storm supports WAY more emoticons between blackberry users. Where are any additional emoticons that people can BOTH see between blackberries and iphones?

Thanks for letting me leave my comments!

    Comment by SimpleIdea — August 27, 2009 #

  33. And one more request: on the Blackberry, you can SEE when someone is text back to you. It either writes “so and so is writing you a message” at the top of the screen, or it shows a little ball with gray lines in it to indicate someone is writing you back. It’s very helpful when you want to know whether to stick around for a reply or not. Why can’t my iphone show that?

    Comment by SimpleIdea — August 27, 2009 #

  34. I love Yahoo Messenger! A request is:

    1. Be able to change the sound just for the messenger
    2. Notifications when someone comes online
    3. Be able to change icon pic from App

A blackberry can do this. Please have the APP do it for the iPhone. THANKS!

  35. Can you add a log off option into settings. Still keeps logged on for 2 weeks? Must be a better way.

When I leave my messenger online, i leave it because i want to talk to someone when he comes online, and it would be quite good to have per user stealth settings so I could put only him online and I wouldn’t get a message in every 5 mins from others asking me ‘what’s up’

    Comment by CJ — August 29, 2009 #

  44. It seems to me that the latest update is less stable than the previous. I’ve experienced many more instances of dropped messages, or messages not being able to be sent unless I re-start the application and/or phone.

In terms of features I’m assuming that your ultimate objective is to provide the same functionality as in the desktop versions. If that’s not the case, I would like to see the message archive feature available on the iphone.

  48. @Sarah Bacon – several people here commented about avatars, and I’d like to add my comments to the mix. Will the next version of Yahoo Messenger for the iPhone contain better integration of avatars? About half of my friends’ avatars do not show up on the iPhone, despite the fact that they appear on YM on the PC. Plus, a couple of my friends have changed their avatars, each of which has updated on the PC, but they do not update on the iPhone. Finally, while chatting with someone using the iPhone app, they do not see my avatar in the chat screen. These 3 avatar related issues really need to be addressed before YM for the iPhone is a true companion to the PC version. Any chance these issues will be addressed soon?

  58. When you send an Image every fajl has the Image.jpg name. It’s VERY annoying!
The image resolution is 500×375 (or 334×500). Is this a joke? I want to send 3MP images or screencaps in the original (320×480) resolution.
You can’t do anything until the image sending is pending.
You can’t cancel a file transfer.

MSN or non-yahoo contacts do not show up on the list. It does not matter if they are online or offline or if I show or hide offline contacts (not new in this release).

Quick set up: On my windows desktop YIM client, I use a non-default font and color.

Ok, the issue: When I am messaging with someone on the iPhone YIM app, my font and color goes to the default, but ONLY when I am messaging with someone on the iPhone app.

It’s a small bug, but since it makes it obvious when you are chatting with someone on an iPhone, it’s kind of a big deal from a privacy perspective.

  72. Can Yahoo Pingbox be used for business websites? Meaning, can multiple visitors be on a website and chat with the business at one time, or do they enter a que? I am considering Pingbox because I need a live chat I can use for my business and mobile phone (when I’m away from the computer). Also, will messenger and Pingbox work with other phones outside of the iPhone?

    Comment by Titus — September 2, 2009 #

  73. @Titus – Yes, Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox can be used on any website. It’s tied to one Yahoo! ID, so each visitor that uses the Pingbox to contact you results in a new window opening in your Messenger.

In order to receive messages from a Pingbox, you need to be signed into a desktop version of Yahoo! Messenger. You can’t receive messages from a Pingbox on your mobile phone, including the iPhone.

  94. I have a 3GS v3.0.1 and i just downloaded the yahoo messenger to chat with my wife who is using a blackberry. messages come in fine when i have the app open on my iphone but when i close it i dont get any messages when i try chatting on the blackberry. It does work on the blackberry without having it open almost imediatately but the iphone never gets the messages if its closed so i guess push isnt working for me either. I have notifications on for it. Thanks for your help

  95. I dunno if it has anything to do with the new iPhone 3.1 firmware + iTunes 9 release, but the day they were made available, my push notifications stopped. I am still running 3.0 on my iPhone 3G. Another thing, I did notice before. I had tried to check the push notification by sending myself a message from another yahoo while just after syncing with my PC in iTunes. No badges, no sounds, nothing would work. Can anyone confirm either of these two?

  112. @Rich, I think thats whats wrong with mine. But honestly, this is going on more than a few days now. One minute itworks, the next it doesn’t. My boyfriend in Iraq messaged me over and over and I didn’t even know. I didn’t get to talk to him. For that reason I hope its fixed SOON!

    Comment by April K — September 15, 2009 #

  113. @Sarah Bacon – Please fix the PUSH failure issues. This app is awesome, but without push its just not practical. Please fix it soon!!! :-(

  114. The App is great, The only thing I think should improve is the the notification sound level, I’m talking about the one you hear (if you can hear it) when you have the app running. Some time I preffer to close the app because the Apple Notification system has a higher volume level. It should have a level setting because maybe somebody like it the way it is.

  115. anyone else experiencing load times of >30s on chat windows? This is a really basic issue that makes the app unusable.

  116. My son just got his new iPod touch, but he can’t signed in to the Yahoo! Messenger app. When he tries he gets this message:

    Yahoo! Messenger Sign-In Problem
Failed due to an known reason.
    Please try again.

[Yes, it says "an known reason".]

He is using the correct credentials. In fact, I tried with a wrong password and the app told me it was incorrect. I can sign on with my account with no trouble, and his account won’t work on my iPod, either. He can, however, log in just fine on our computers (Mac & PC) and the Yahoo! app (not messenger) on his iPod.

I tried both of his sisters’ accounts, as well, and neither of them work, either. I can only deduce the problem stems from the fact that they are all Family Accounts.

I’d love to hear an explanation as to the cause of this problem. Maybe the Messenger app is confusing itself with chat (which is restricted for Family Accounts)?

Of course, I’d love even more to see this particular bug squashed. 8-)

  117. I installed yahoo messenger on my iphone a few days ago. Unfortunately, push does not seem to work. When i’m not running the app, i do not get notified that someone has sent me an IM. I have to open the app to receive IM’s which is not very useful. How can I fix this? Or isn’t this feature available yet?
