Introducing Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta
August 24, 2009 on 1:00 pm | In 10 version | 286 Comments
Warm up your webcams because the all-new Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta has arrived! This latest release is full of great new features. Without further ado, here’s what you’ll find inside (and don’t miss the demo video near the end of this post):
High-quality video calls
We’ve completely redesigned our 1:1 webcam feature (under the hood too). Now you can make a high-quality video call to a friend with synched audio, right in the IM window. Features include the ability to swap video windows, position the video windows side-by-side, mute the call or place it on hold. You can even go full-screen with your video call. To get started, click the new “Video Call” button in the IM window.
Note that the friend you video call has to also be on Yahoo! Messenger 10. And these video enhancements are just for 1:1 video calls; broadcasting your webcam to multiple viewers (with no audio) has not changed.

New “Y! Updates” view of your contact list
People are busy these days, doing all sorts of interesting things online. To help you keep up with your friends, we added an alternate view of your contact list that shows a real-time stream of their updates, including Messenger status message changes. If they’ve opted-in to share their updates via Yahoo!, you’ll be able to see what they’re saying on Twitter, reading on Yahoo! Buzz, listening to on last.fm, and more. More about sharing Y! Updates
Just like in the regular contact list view, you can easily IM a friend, start a video call and more, right from the Yahoo! Updates view. Or use the contact action bar to quickly find a friend without switching tabs.
We also added additional features for how and when you see your friends’ updates. When a new update comes in, a “toast” alert will pop up in the lower right corner of your screen. If you want to disable these, go to Messenger > Preferences > Yahoo! Updates. You can turn alerts on and off and even update preferences by contact or by type of update.
Download Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta
Find more to chat about
Within the new “Yahoo! Updates” view, you’re sure to find more to talk about with your friends. To make it easy, we added a hover menu that lets you quickly IM a friend about their update. When you do, the update appears inline in the conversation window, so when you start your IM with “I can’t believe you said that!”, your friend will know what you’re talking about. Note that your friend needs to also be on Yahoo! Messenger 10 to see the update inline.
All-new Yahoo! Insider
For a lot of our users, Yahoo! Messenger is one of the first things they fire up on their PC in the morning. When they do, Insider is there to get them started. But we thought a new design was long overdue.
This new version looks a lot better and includes your Yahoo! Mail, a ton of news (Today, headlines, local news), weather, and Yahoo! Search (web, images and video). We even added a new Y! Insider button onto the main client window, so you can open it anytime to get the latest news or check your Mail or weather. View screenshot
Change your language easily
If you use the U.S. version but wish it could be in your local language, you’re in luck. When you start up Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta, you’ll notice a new language menu on the sign-in screen. Choose from 16 different languages and the buttons, menus and various parts of the interface will change to that language. If you’re already signed in, you can also change your language under Messenger > Preferences > Language (you’ll have to restart Yahoo! Messenger for it to take effect).
New ways to sort your contacts
We added a couple new ways to organize your contact list. First is by recent activity which will list your friends with the most recent updates at the top of your list. We also added the ability to sort by availability, so if you usually show all contacts in your list whether they’re online or not, this will help bring the online friends to the top. Sort options are located in the drop down menu on the right side of the “Contacts” tab.
New icons in the IM window
We also added new icon designs to the toolbar in the IM window, and you’ll also find specific buttons for video calls and voice calls.
Watch the short video below to see the new features in Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta:
As with any new release, we welcome your feedback about what’s working well for you and what’s not. After using Yahoo! Messenger 10 Beta for a bit, go to the Help menu and select “Send Feedback” to get started.

Pleease make yahoo messenger integrate with Aero from Windows Vista or 7. The available skins look ok, but the glass efect would be nicer! Thanks!

Please find some bugs:
1. No “:” emoting in chat.
2. Voice automatically opens in chat.
3. Text toolbar automatically opens in chat.
4. Can’t use the up cursor to scroll between messages previously sent in chat.
5. In the ignore list in the preferences, if you select all, and choose remove, many remain left over, and you have to repeat.
6. When entering captcha, it can be very unresponsive.
7. After closing chat, then choosing “sign out” from the messenger menu, the chat screen may re-appear in a frozen state.
8. After closing chat, and then messenger, messenger may not be started again from the start menu, it must be ended through ctrl-alt-del.
9. Some ads will allow the ad window below chat to open to half the screen.
10. A horizontal scrollbar appears on the chat user list when unnecessary.
11. The last user in the user list appears incorrectly often.
12. The default user font is black in chat, but appears as a dark grey.

Oh no… where’s the Romanian translation?
Oh come on Romanians are mega-fans of Y! Messenger… it’s a true phenomenon… we even have the word “mes” to denote Y! Messenger in sentences like “hai intră pe mes” (“go log in on Y! Messenger”)

Great work, Yahoo team! New features sound cool, I will have to check them out and I will provide feedback after some use. Feature wise I think you guys are on the right track, but from overall strategy I think you guys are going in a bit wrong direction. With all these features, Yahoo messenger is becomming a portal to many yahoo services and also is going to attract lot more users, which is the good part. But the bad part is, continuing to build new features on top of the old messenger core, is making it bloated (not necessarily too slow, but huge download size), unmodular and for these reasons unportable to OSes other than windows, keeping all features and look n’ feel intact. At this point what you guys really need to look into is revamp the core of the yahoo messenger, which is minimal and allows and manages plug-ins very efficiently. That way each plug-in (module) can be given to a team and thus its easy to port features one-by-one to a different OS. You can also easily create 2 or 3 different kind of Yahoo messenger packages based on available features and download size for lets say (1) netbooks, (2) laptops/desktops lite version, (3) true multi-media and messeging hub kind of fully blown yahoo messenger.
I am saying this, because if you don’t do this now, someone else like, google, aol or microsoft is going to do this pretty soon.
Also its high time messengers don’t look like messenger anymore, they have grown to be more than messengers, i.e. communication and entertainment hub. So they should have a completely new main window, focusing less on buddy list and more on all available features in the messenger. I already have one new concept design, I will try to provide the pic via Yahoo messenger Feedback, I might work on some more concept designs, if you express interest.

Sigh, sorry I can’t enjoy it since I use Macs. Messenger for Mac rarely gets any updates. Can you give us any news on an update for the Mac version? And by update I mean something that has actual features that would bring it in line with other versions? Thanks anyway..
Comment by jeremy — August 24, 2009 #
OMG, this is a terrible application ever, the user interface look horrible, not much changes from version 9. For me, i would think that why dont yahoo just keep the interface same as version 9 and add more features into it because the interface in version 10 look more ugly compared to version 9 (expecially contact,Y!update and plugin button). or why dont yahoo just continue develop yahoo messenger for vista and rename it to version 10 or whatever…Yahoo messenger for Vista was the most awsome application from yahoo.

Can you change the look of your screen name (color, font) in the IM window in this version?
Comment by Mike — August 24, 2009 #
Yahoo! Messenger looks horrible on Windows 7. It doesn’t have a shadow and it’s the only window that doesn’t fit. Why are you doing this? Why are you shooting yourself in the foot? Just provide default purple theme if you want, but don’t force ‘98 style themes on a 2009 OS. Take Trillian for example. You guys could learn a LOT from them. The contact list window is not Win 7-like, but it fits perfectly and you can customize it in hundreds of ways.
By the small feature set you’re providing, this is more worth of being version 9.5 than 10.
BTW, it’s been a few years now since the Mac version has been in beta testing without any updates in recent months. Just reminding you, in case you forgot about it

[sorry about the typos, please delete my other comment]
Seriously guys, what the hell are you doing? This will be the tenth release of Y!M and you’re still adding a some useless, bogus features nobody really uses that much!
Like, when will Y!M be able to remember IDs and passwords separately? People get tired of having to type their ID every time they sign in, just because they’re afraid of identity theft and disable remembering of passwords. Another thing would be remembering more IDs via a drop-down menu.
For Christ’s sake, these features have been around in other IM applications since the time of Y!M 8. Does Yahoo! even take into consideration user feedback for the improvement of user friendliness?
Another thing that shouldn’t be hard to do is the addition of status macros for displaying music player information like song title, artist, album, etc. This information has been in constant standardization and improvement for the past decade and a half. Can’t you guys keep up?
And I’m only dreaming of the day when a “custom emoticons” feature will be implemented. I know that’s a bit more complicated, but this is the 10th edition we’re talking about! Hello!
Some of the stuff I’ve mentioned can be realized with the aid of third party programs. Some are more accessible to the average user, some require better skills. I think, overall, Yahoo! would have a much more popular IM application on their hands if they made it easier for users to add custom content much easier.
Really, instead of hiring graphic artists and voice actors from all around the world for silly things like Audibles and buggy IMVironments, hire a couple of programmers to make Y!M more user customizable! That what it lacks in order to become a more popular application. Please quit wasting so much time!
Why should Yahoo! care about any of this? I don’t know. Maybe because more popularity means more page hits, which in term means more revenue from advertising. But maybe that’s just where I’m wrong…

Why you are still preseting Yahoo Messenger 10 on Windows XP ?? Windows XP is in the Extended Period it is no longer sold and now the most used windows on new pc are Windows Vista and 7. You should really make a aero interface and more localized languages. I am from Romania so i am still waiting the Romanian language.. Thanks for understanding..
Comment by Ionut — August 25, 2009 #
Seriously, this is the best Yahoo could do for a “new” version? 9 wasn’t even that much of an update from 8. Get off your butts Yahoo and start making a real IM client like the Vista version was turning out to be before you trashed it.

I am a huge fan of Yahoo! Messenger, but I have to agree with what the people above are saying, though, they are being unfairly harsh. I haven’t even downloaded 10, nor will I, till some real updates are made. I really want to see Yahoo succeed, but, the features are not being provided that are in demand, such as tabbed messaging, and Aero interface. Is, or will, Yahoo be working on getting these features into Version 10 in the near future?

I do hope as Y messenger 10 matures that you give us an option out of those y updates. I don’t do twitter or anything like that. I don’t care if my uncle jerry is mowing the lawn. Who cares! And I don’t care what other people are doing online. The whole update thing to me is ridiculous. I shall pass on that! And of course I don’t care to let people know what I listen too or what I am watching on you tube. Actually I find all of that a whole lot of annoying. I go on yahoo to chat with friends. If they are on? They are on! If they are off? They are off! I do not care to know if they are listening to music or anything else they maybe doing. This is coming from a person who thinks twitter is a waste of time.
And as for video conferencing? It’s no big deal. You can do that on Y9 by just simply going into a private conference and pulling up each others cam and talking on the mic. To me I will have no use for that. I never use the call a PC feature. This is just another feature certain foreigners will use to force themselves on the women in chat rooms who don’t take no for an answer or perverts trying to expose themselves to them. I do hope you will have an option to turn this off in preferences!
As far as the call a PC goes, Usually there are idiots who abuse it by calling and harassing women in chat who can’t take NO for an answer anyway. These are the same dolts who buzz you if you don’t answer them right away or you tell them you don’t want to be bothered and they continue with that annoying BUZZ to try to get your attention because they are too stupid to figure out you that you don’t want to be bothered.
I hope you are fixing the feature in options where you click it so only friends on your list can IM you and that it don’t block everyone in the chat rooms at the same time. Right now when I check the option of only having people on my list that can IM me. I can’t see anyone in the rooms unless they are on my list. Sure we just want our friends to chat with us. But we also like to see other people who may or may not be our new friends. It’s nice to turn off IM’s and still use a chat room and not get bothered by bots or perverts. Also that option where only friends can IM you can cut attacks from booters in half by 50% You need to fix that!
As far as chat goes. I still think the rooms should be in a browser and powered by java. That will get rid of the booters. I don’t know about the bots. I still say yahoo get’s paid by the porn peddlers. Can’t prove it though. But it sure seems like that! Even with CAPTCHA they get through. By having a browser java based chat? It would eliminate all that booting going on completely. By people using a separate name in chat and on the IM. The booters won’t know who to boot and the people in chat can tell their friends what name to add in their IM. But hey this only makes sense. Other people are doing it and most chat services don’t have porn bots or booters. Makes you think huh?
Another option that needs to be removed is the mic lock in chat rooms. I am getting sick and tired of hearing people. Burp, fart, wheeze and type on their keyboards because they put it on and forget they have it on. Heard an interesting fight between 2 people the other night in one of the rooms. Thanks to mic lock. I really didn’t need to know her hubby sucks in bed!(rolls eyes!) now really?
I also wish you could bring back the standard skins. Bad enough vista uses a ton of graphics memory up as it is. It would be nice to strip the messenger and use a basic windows skin.
On a good note! I am glad your keeping support for windows XP. Most people who are buying new computers with vista installed are removing vista and installing windows xp on them. Most of us consider windows XP as the upgrade from vista. Just because Microsoft says vista is number one? Most of their VISTA sales were forced on people when people bought new computers. To me that don’t count as a honest sale People are still removing vista from their new computers and replacing it with XP by the hordes. Even most business are still using XP because of the cost of upgrading all of their memory and older computers to support vista is outrages. Even with windows 7 coming out. It will be a good year before most who will decide to give up XP for 7. So you have to keep support for XP. And if windows 7 turns out to be as horrible as vista? You may want to keep supporting XP. Honestly!
Y10 has more features I think most wont use. But hey on a happy note for the perverts on yahoo, the new cam conference will give perverts something new to perv with. Adding an extra annoyance for people who don’t want to be bothered. Something new for the retards and perverts to harass people with. Good job yahoo!
It would be even better if you can turn offers for cam conference off. I do hope you are adding that option.
It would make me real happy if I can turn the cam conference off and those annoying twitter updates off as well. I know those twitter sites are popular now. But there is still some of us who just wants to chat with friends and don’t care what they are listening to or what sites they are going though. I really don’t care honestly. And I really could give a rats butt if anyone saw what I was listening too or what site I am going too. Please add and option so I can turn off my own updates as well. Because I really don’t care to know if my sister bought a night gown from some stupid web site. Like I really need to know that!(rolls Eyes!) So I do hope you add a feature in options to turn all of that crap off. That would make me happy!

Okay, I’ve compiled my bug list and suggestions list for this beta (I did this for the last 9 beta too) and I’ve submitted it to the Feedback form.
My bug list (includes some of what Sean found):
01. Instant message windows sometimes don’t remember their size and location.
02. Part of the instant message window appears below the Superbar in Windows 7.
03. The text input area in IMs doesn’t remember its size (defaults back after you close Messy).
04. Taskbar item flash upon new chat messages (when minimized) in chat room hasn’t worked since Y!M 7.5.
05. You can’t disable the IM tips anymore.
06. The horizontal scrollbar that appears on the bottom of the chatters list.
07. When you move a window on top of the chat room user list, part of the user list is “invisible”.
08. When Messenger is minimized to the system tray and you exit chat, you can double click the systray icon and the chat room window will “ghost” for a few seconds before it closes.
09. The main contact list window doesn’t remember its absolute position on Windows Vista and 7 when you size the window on the edge.
10. Some instant message windows appear “small” and cramped – you’re forced to resize the window and exit it so all other windows will appear correctly and not small.
11. Entering CAPTCHA sometimes causes to become unresponsive (frozen basically) for a few seconds.
12. Random lockups upon typing notifications and IMs from some users.
13. The MessageFormat resets when a chat room or IM window “locks up”.
14. Chat emotes “:” don’t work in chat anymore since 9.0 beta.
15. Display pictures sometimes become corrupted (appear as a black image). Suggestion for this below.
16. File transfers will fail most of the time because the uploader’s speed is too fast for the client to handle.
Here’s some suggestions:
01. A Connection Troubleshooter (Windows Live Messenger style) to diagnoise various sign-in issues and to check server status.
02. Make use of Windows Aero on Windows Vista and Windows 7 to add a “glass” effect to the contact list, IM, chat room and conference windows.
03. Link the new profile database to chat rooms – names entering chat use the old profile data which we can’t edit anymore (like chat nicknames!).
04. Tabbed messages. I think it’s finally time Yahoo! Messenger has fully functional tabbed messages, don’t you think?
05. Replace the GIF based emoticons with the Flash based emoticons that Web Messenger and several IMVironments use.
06. Right click menu item for display pictures to “refresh” the display picture (redownloading it). This could potentially address the “black box” display picture issue.
07. Add the feature back to check files for viruses (via a option to select your AV) for file transfers.
08. Add a Instant Message “answering machine” feature as an alternative to ignoring everyone on your buddy list. This way we could filter out people we do want to talk to and people we don’t.
09. Instant Message auto-responder feature when status is set to busy.
10. The ability to have animated GIF display pictures.
11. Add a search function to the message archive viewer.
12. Multiple account option that saves accounts and passwords and allows us to switch between them (like Windows Live Messenger, AIM, ICQ, etc.).

Some bugs / annoying stuff I found :
1. Drag-and-drop file transfer does not work. You have to use the “Send File” button instead. Cumbersome.
2. Fonts on the sign-in screen and preferences window look really really bad.
3. The entire application looks awful on Windows 7. Consider adding a transparent titlebar/menu area and/or native skin support.
4. Also related to #3, the interface is really, REALLY crowded. Consider adding and option to remove stuff like the Yahoo Updates tab from the interface, or make unwanted stuff be less “in your face”.

I don’t know why you guys stoped working on such a promising version like YM for VIsta and continuing to work on the same core that is outdated and hasn’t brought any major updates since i don’t remember when. Like someone said before, it’s 2009 guys.
In the last few months i seeked an alternative for IM cause of the same old boring interface that looks unatural on Win Vista and 7. And because of an annoying error on sending files that occures 95% of the time i try to send a file to a friend.
In conclusion if you want to keep your market share of IM users you have to 1)change the interface, make it aero and 2)make it more customizable,3) change the emoticons, 4)make tabbed windows. 5)try to figer out why that error occurs(i tried with 4 different ISP so i don’t think that the connection is the cause) and most of my friends have this problem it’s not just me, nor the viruses and other malwares are the cause) “A problem occurred while transferring the file “xxxxxxxx.xxx”. The transfer has been stopped.”

Sarah,
New Insider window is good, but I don’t think anyone uses Yahoo Insider. Its kind of an old fashion thing now. I usually have Insider disabled. I took a look at Yahoo Insider after probably over a year, just because you mentioned it as one of the things that was updated. Like I said it looks good, having Yahoo Mail view might come in handy, but I’d rather go to yahoo home-page for news or click Yahoo Mail button on my Yahoo toolbar to view my emails.
One more thing I would also like to suggest regarding all the people using bad language is, although it is certainly not acceptable using such language here but I think its an outcome of their comments not being heard for long long time. You guys have created this blog to hear what people think about Yahoo Messenger in general. If people are not commenting about the new Insider window or the new video call feature, it means those new features are of less value or they might take time to get traction (I assume so in the case of video call, but Insider is certainly of no value in my opinion). You cannot force them to comment about things that you are excited about. You have to see what users are eager and excited about.
I have been seeing this trend since this board was created. Admins have been responding only to comments they are excited about and usually filtering out other peoples’ comments. I have always used good language in my comments, yet I have yet to get a response for one of my comments.
It is like adding features that you see fit while pretending to listen to users by creating a blog and responding to or reading only those posts that correspond to features you are excited about.

@Aghi – Video call will only be enabled if your webcam is plugged in and being recognized by Yahoo! Messenger. If it’s plugged in, go to Messenger > My Webcam to test it out. And for both voice and video, those will only be available when you’re trying to contact someone who can receive those types of communications. So if a friend is using Messenger in Yahoo! Mail for example, they are not able to receive voice or video calls so those buttons would be unavailable to you. Hope that helps,

1. You need a radical change in UI. Adding more sinks or even aero would help.
2. I’m from Romania, I would like the Romanian language package
3. Tabbed IM windows are really useful
4. Change the UI . Nobody needs Y! Updates.
5. Make the search archive thing
6. Make a box or something in the preferences menu where I can disable adds. They are absolutely annoying
7. We don’t really need IMviorments…or Audibles for that matter. Nobody really uses them
8. Change the emoticons or add some new ones.
9. Make it more like the Y!M for Vista was. I hated Vista users just because they had that very cool lookin’ Y!M.
10. Allow the users to make changes , like …I don’t know, modify emoticons…more costumisable , I’d say.
11. Put back that thing with , when I hover over the status box, a text apears with my current status and other info. I had that in v9 and it was useful, at least for me.
12. Do you people really listen and take action about what we Y!M users say? Or are you just saying yes, yes, yes by default? Please, listen to us, or everybody will eventually convert to Windows Live Messenger or who knows what other IM Clients. Please, listen.

I think everyone finds big advertises annoying, have you guys looked into replacing those main window and chat room ads with ‘Yahoo Shortcuts’ like thing? Yahoo Mail has something called ‘Yahoo Shortcuts’, if you enable it, it underlines some words and hovering mouse gives you a popup bubble with related search results or if its an address it gives you map or option to add it to your address book, if its a movie it will show movie info and showtimes.

Where is the real-time voice call volume control?
Comment by Hadnagy Laszlo — August 28, 2009 #
Seen the clips on internet, saw the “features” and i`m again disappointed.
the Y!mess looks like the old boring 7.0 … , same windows, same things …
… what ever changed from 7th version to this 10th ? some few good things, but NOTHING really impressive
the only moment when Yahoo had a chance to show superiority was with the impressive “Windows Vista Edition” , not only that interface was perfect , but of some features never replicated to “9″ or “10″ … example from Yahoo!Messenger for Vista Beta (1.2.1.1046) – Messenger – preferences – Alerts – when – “a contact comes online or goes offline” – “do not alert me” ( same as in all other versions) + !!! and exception !!! “But always show a message for the selected contacts” and you can check box those that you really need to see when they connect/disconnect
I know you have problems, everybody has them, … but at least do something or choose to close the business if you can`t handle it
community suggestions should be 1st priority to you as company, just ignoring them each and every time will drop you even further in the crisis
it was proposed to you some time ago, and maybe you can do it this time : make the Vista Edition – code public – >> http://www.fsf.org/licensing/licenses/gpl.html
imagine the buzz around a project like this, imagine the people that see their work inside a program used by so many …
you only have to THINK at least ones

Problem of people complaining about updated Mac version is only going to get worse when Google launches their Chrome OS next year. Nokia who made a deal with Intel is also likely going to use Intel’s Atom processor for their new line of Internet Tablets. Solution to this is to start planning a cross plateform Yahoo Messenger. I am not sure how feasible a Java based version is, but sooner or later you are going to have to pull the trigger on writing a cross plateform version from scratch. The sooner you do that the more ahead of your competition you will be.
If Yahoo doesn’t make a decision now, the only IMs available for Netbooks and Tablets (Nokia and Apple are planning tablets) will be Google talk and Skype. Hey, bow about using that money from Microsoft deal to buy out Skype from Ebay? Ebay is already regretting their decision of buying Skype couple of years ago and looking to spin it off.
Comment by Saurabh — August 28, 2009 #
And also a hint that incase you do plan a new cross platefrom version from scratch, it will need to look more like a music or video player than a messenger (just my vision) and also keep in mind the increasing use of touch screens
Interface must be touch screen friendly!

The most prominent feature in the update has got to be the high-quality video calling, which is likely targeting Skype users. They also threw more sociability into this release… you can view the status updates (from Facebook, Twitter, or Last.fm) of your friends right in your contact list. [...]

To the mac users: I really don’t know why you insist on complaining to yahoo for yahoo messenger for macs short comings. Who you should complain to is apple computers. You should be asking the makers of mac. Why you can’t have a voice in a chat room and why your messenger lacks the basic features that window y messenger has. Maybe mac can get together with yahoo and bring voice into chat for mac users. I don’t think it’s really yahoos fault yahoo messenger for mac comes short. Yahoo can only work with what mac gives them to work with. Which is why I will never buy a mac. To over priced to begin with. You can buy 2 windows PC’s for the price of one mac. And macs don’t have nearly as many plug ins as windows has to enjoy the internet via chat and so on. I would love to own a mac. But they still have a long way to go. Mac is like a pretty girl with no personality. Sort of like what yahoo messenger for vista was. Pure eye candy but had hardly any features. I didn’t use it because you couldn’t even go into the chat room with ym for vista. I am glad they dumped it. A wise decision for yahoo. Another pretty girl with no personality. But then vista is as well.

Yahoo messenger team you people need to make something new now. What i have noticed in the last 3 releases of yahoo messenger was the chnage of the theme and a new style given to the features {no improvements}. Just re arranging stuff deosnt work. I seriously love yahoo for the reason it allows me to connect so vastly. But it requires some amazing changes.
As mentioned above again and again, Glass interface is required in a new release now, that saves the headache of finding the perfect colour theme.
There are alot of bugs that need fixation. Like photo transfer errors which occurs time and again. And many other bugs mentioned above and possibly you people are aware of.
So please do something amazing to Yahoo messenger. Yahoo Messenger for Vista was something really amazing, Make something similar or please put yahoo messenger of the list of production make no more of it.

John…. sorry dude, but you are so far from wrong it isn’t even funny. OSX has all the underpinning necessary for text chat, video chat, audio chat its just that Yahoo Messenger for OSX is over 4 years old. Apples own iChat software proves how good it could be, but Yahoo won’t allow them to link to Messenger, so for that we are stuck with AOL.
{and no I’m not a Fanboy…. I am however a switcher, used Windows for 25yrs… and now don’t know why it took me so long to leave}

Since version 8 I have seen a bug where if you get disconnected from messenger, have audibles disabled, and then go through log in screens to re-connect(often form a new IP) you must answer 1 audibles are disable woudl you like to enable them for every IM window open. Has this bug been remedied in this version?

In Windows Vista SP2 (32-bit edition), with all the latest updates installed and also I have a 3-User McAfee Internet Security 20009 installed with all the latest updates and DAT files installed. I have Yahoo Messenger 9 and I want to install Yahoo Messenger 10, without uninstalling Yahoo Messenger 9. When I double click the icon on Yahoo Messenger 10 and follows the instructions before it begins to download, while Yahoo Messenger 10 is in the process of downloading, when it goes to 30-35%, it suddenly goes to 100%, even if I am on dial up or broadband speed.
Even if I uninstall Yahoo Messenger 9, and I want to have Yahoo Messenger 10, after I follow the instructions before Yahoo Messenger 10 is in the process of downloading, same thing happens when it is on 30-35%, it suddenly goes to 100%, even if I am on dial-up or broadband speed.
Yahoo Inc. can you please resolve this issue.

The rest on my first comment is correct.

It is still incredibly hard to find someones profile when your are chatting with them in an Instant Message. At the moment if you want to view the profile for the person you are chatting with you have to go:
Actions > Contact options > View Profile, from the main menu bar. Very few people will ever figure this out and as a result very few people actually view profiles.
Why can’t you put a Profile button in the manin Icon menu bar beside “Environments, Activites, Photos”, then people will see it and click on it, no long complication menu paths.

There is a list of things I dislike in Y! Messenger 10 :
1-The Voice and Video Calling menu it is not working for me (doesn’t see my camera); So I am not able to use my web camera.
2-The New Y! Updates tab is annoying. I just closed my hi5 account for the same thing. You shoul remove it and place instead a tab with mails(like you did in the Insider).
3-The GUI is the same from messenger 7.5 before you sign in ,the difference in version 10 are the language selection.(I’m still waiting for Romanian language). From Messenger 9 there are some new skins but there is not a major upgrade of how it looks.
and The Things I like about Y! Mess 10:
1-The language selection before sign in;
2-The new icons for webcam , mic ;
3-The new Yahoo Insider who is very usefull for me; The older was very annoying.
So I hope that you understand the demands of Yahoo Users and resolve in Mess 10 Final Version this problems or in the next one. Thanks.

If I’m watching a picture for example and i try to send it to someone, messenger freezes, same thing happens with every sort of file. If I am using he specific file I am trying to send, messenger freezes and then I have to shut it down using task manager.

Is something wrong with Yahoo! chat servers these days?
I am just not able to enter the chat rooms. After the Captcha code verification, all I see is the message ‘You have been signed out of Chat. If you want to sign in again, please join a room’.
I am using Messenger 10-Beta and Windows XP SP3. I tried downgrading to 9.0 and then 8.0. But, that didn’t help.
I have never faced this kind of an issue. Is there a resolution to this? Does anyone know a remedy? If this is a bug or know issue, Sarah please could you take a note of this again. Thank you.

Comment by Jancsy — September 5, 2009 #
I honestly don’t see that the captcha function in chat is doing its job. Every time I log into chat I get bombarded by bots, My ignore list is hundreds of entries long. If captcha is incapable of doing better than this, then just remove the annoyance. Yahoo finally got it right with Y!M for Vista. That should be your focus. I personally will not install any new versions of yahoo until there are some dramatic changes. I’m not going to list those changes again as they have already been listed repeatedly on this blog. Please Yahoo, Please listen to your users. They know what’s best for your products!
Comment by David — September 5, 2009 #
Hi,
Why some major bugs are not fixed?!
Plug-ins in YMessenger 9 were not working. It was always saying, “an error occurred while trying to access “X” plug-in.
It was OK with me since I wasn’t using any plug-ins.
Now with this new Updates tab, I receive this error every time I start the messenger! Other plug-ins still give the same error message.
Call button still doesn’t work in Vista after 2 years! It stucks while trying to connect to server. In version 10 it is even worse, because Voice Call button is totally disabled!
After 2 years, Yahoo developers still don’t know that they should not write in Program Files, and should use AppData folder in Windows Vista and 7. If a user wants to make backup of his chat archives, he must be a geek to find out what a virtual storage on Vista is, and where it should expect his archives!
Deleting multiple ppl from your Friends List or Contacts List usually fails, and you’d better do it one-by-one.
Audibles have problem with IE 8, and if IE 8 is disabled, the user cannot use or watch Audibles in chat.
File Sharing still sucks, There is little chance for file sharing to work if the people exchanging files are not friends in Yahoo.
If you let someone Add you, you have no way to revert your decision. What’s more, if you ignore that person later on, Ignore doesn’t work!
And the FUNNIEST one…I cannot even report these errors to Yahoo, cuz if you try “Report a problem to Yahoo”, after writing a description of your problem, and press Send, you will get a message that submitting report to server failed!!
I had to Google to find this blog and post the problems I am encountering in Yahoo Messenger 9 and 10 BETA!
Isn’t it better that Yahoo Messenger team listen to customers and fix the obvious bugs before they start new features that many of them aren’t really interesting to the majority of users?!
How many people have reported voice chat problems in Vista, or plug-ins error, or Audibles?!
The only reason I am still sticking to this messenger is that most of my friends are on Yahoo, but again if I want to share file with them, I should convince them to use e-mail, and if we are going to have voice chat, I have to make them to use Skype or Windows Live, cuz Yahoo’s doesn’t work on Vista!
I hope posting errors here has some effects unlike all those unanswered questions in Yahoo Answer for Yahoo Messenger problems, or buggy bug reporter of Yahoo Messenger.
Regards

Please take a look at Trillian or GAIM, both have Tabbed feature!
Comparation YM vs Triallian:
1. Tabbed –> YM= No Trillian= Yes
2. Multi ID –> YM=No Trillian=Yes
Tabbed and Multi YM ID is a MUST HAVE!
PS: GTalk Labs version has TABBED feature now!!! Maybe this is time to switch to gtalk which hear their clients seriously

If you guys do two things for me, I will download this version and never look back.
1.) Give me the open to make a new name line everytime I type something else, like in versions 8 and lower. I still haven’t graduated to 9 because of this and lord knows I will hold onto 8 as long as I possibly can unless this gets fixed.
2.) I don’t like userpics showing in my list. I always have just the little Yahoo smilies next to the names on my my list. It looks really unorganized to me.
I like that 9/10 have the different colored themes but these two features annoy me to no end. I also like most of the new features in 9/10. But PLEASE add these options. I don’t think they’d be hard to add and I would switch in a second if I had these options!
Thank you!

Yahoo chat rooms REALLY need human moderators, like in the ole MSN days, Moderators can boot out the bots.
Why is focus being so much on new when basics of old are not addressed? what about more secure from booters, flooders etc? Whole new markets have been created by people voting with their wallets/feet wanting more secure connections (yahelite, ytunnelpro)

In 9.0 and 10, we offer a compact list view which results in small icons showing up next to each contact rather than a large image. I recommend using that view to emulate what you like in 8. More info here: http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2009/06/02/what%e2%80%99s-new-in-yahoo-messenger-90/

There used to be a voice volume control slider in Yahoo Messenger 9. Why the hell have you taken that out?!
Seriously, why should a user adjust global volume just to turn Y!M voice up or down? This sort of application behavior shouldn’t be allowed. For instance if I want to hear my buddy at a lower volume, I have to turn my PC / speaker volume down but then I might not hear some music or other applications’ sounds too well despite their volume being maxed out.
A user shouldn’t have to adjust every other sound on their computer just to get the desired volume from Y!M, only to readjust to initial volumes when finished using Y!M voice. I see this as a serious usability issue and I really hope you’ll fix it in the next alpha or beta release.

I am tired of Yahoo looking completely inconsistent with the rest of my modern UI in Windows 7. Please AT LEAST give us an option to disable the built-in skin and use normal windows theme (Aero) instead.
If anything, at least give us the ability to use the Aero window borders and caption bar buttons, so we also get the shadow and fade effects when managing messenger windows.
In Messenger 9, I had to rename some folder in messenger to get Aero, but it made some of the UI unusable because it depended on your forced skin.
Please give us an option to disable the skin and use our native Aero!

Hello, I am using verion YM 10 Beta but as far as I know, my contact is on 9.0. We had not chatted for a while and it was during this time that I upgraded to version 10. He may still be on 9.0.
Question #1: Why suddenly, the voice and video chat is GONE from his ID when it was there since I upgraded
Question #2: When I open a message box under his user name, I noticed that the ‘VIEW WEBCAM & INVITE TO VIEW MY WEBCAM” options are grayed out. Also the Environments option is grayed out. The only options left are to send a message, SMS, regular email or call his computer. What does this mean? Please advice? Thank you

SARAH BACON, have you ever heard any suggestion and feedback before??? Why is your team very RELUCTANT to switch to the AERO interface?!!!!!!!! oh come on you can have the skins available there if anyone wants it and uses xp, but i bet MORE YAHOO MESSENGER USERS will switch to the aero skin once it gets available.
The WPF version of y!m before that was built for vista is the NEAREST interface that captured alot of GOOD feedbacks, however you did not continue the development for that version!
This time you wanted to go to version 10??? but with the UGLIEST LOOKING WINDOWS APPLICATION INTERFACE your team is giving us your loyal users your team and yahoo is not utilizing one of your largest hold on the customer share, and that is yahoo messenger.
SUMMARY:
Make the yahoo messenger version 10 interface use aero by default in vista and windows 7 machines capable of doing it. leave the old ugly and cheap skins for those still in xp.
PLEASE DONT MAKE US WAIT FOR version 11 to get a visually appealing yahoo messenger interface!
Don’t you have any member of your team foucs on revamping the interface? make it look native in win vista and win7? make it look visually stunning while giving a powerhouse of features? why can’t you do both at the same time????
UPDATE THE INTERFACE, LOOK and UTILIZE Y!M TO YAHOO’s OWN ADVANTAGE.
dont be stuck on the UGLY and CHEAP skins!!!!!!!
learn yahoo, don’t get lefty behind! listen to your supporters, or else you will lose them, like what is happening now. better start listening now than regret later.

I’ve been using Yahoo Messenger for 6 years. Mainly because it’s no. 1 chat program used in Romania. Although i probably wouldn’t use it in Romanian, i still think it would be a nice addition considering the number of romanian users.
I’ve seen yahoo from 6 to 10. Yahoo is already used to making a big deal out of each improvement. Every time you improve something, you make a new release. It’s already yahoo 10 but it’s not that an improvement since messenger 8. its just some bug fixes and slightly different look (rearranged buttons).
First thing i do when i set up yahoo is disable insider and IMvironments and Audibles ( dont know why i cant disable IMs now). I’m not suggesting pulling insider, audibles, ims or status updates. Leave them as they are, but they are not essential. As a matter a fact i think only few users make use of that option.
There are so many different areas in which yahoo messenger could improve! I dont understand why is the yahoo team stressing on insider, audibles when you could improve performance and the look. Gtalk, Skype and MSN messenger look a lot better even without aero peek. Transparency is a must in a future yahoo version ( like the vista beta).
I’m sure that you don’t even listen to users and this new version is the best example. I bet there were more users urging you to change the look and make it user friendly than to improve audibles, insider and what else.
And come on what’s with all these versions? Messenger 7, messenger 7.5beta messenger 8, 8.5 beta and then 9. One after another with so few improvements. Take it slow in a couple of years you’ll be at messenger 15 still without glass effect only with bugs fixed

I have Windows 7. Could that be the problem?
Comment by windows 7 — October 24, 2009 #
it would be nice to integrate the messenger into the sidebar as with messenger for vista
Comment by gabybv — October 28, 2009 #
Video quality excellent, however the biggest draw back (which makes v 10 unusable, hence I have reverted to 9 for all of my three users) is that voice and video cannot be initiated separately – this completely kills resources on both Vista Ultimate, Vista Home and XP Home (the sound module is what is killing resources on all OSs).
When using Yahoo Messenger 10 with video call, on an Atom Processor with 2GB ram, the CPU is working between 70 to 100% and it is impossible to use any other application, also the system ends up crashing.
When using yahoo messenger 9 on the same system with video only (no voice) the CPU is working between 15 and 35% – which allows for other apps to be used and the system becomes more stable.
The new Yahoo is also too much for much more powerful systems (Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2 GHz, 800MHz FSB, 4MB L2 cache, with 1280 MB NVidia GeForcen 8600M GT, and 3GB DDR2) and using the webcall feature whilst using simple flash based games completely kills the voice and slows down the system to unacceptable levels. This does not happen when using yahoo 9.
I look forward to v10 where video and voice can be activated separately.
Comment by Flora — November 1, 2009 #
With Messenger, I can finally get it installed and running on my laptop. Version 9 would get stuck trying to log i, and I never could get it to work.
But now with version 10, i cant get into chat rooms. It just hangs with “Getting categories list”. Does this work for anyone?
Comment by slang — November 1, 2009 #
@Flora – Video and voice can be activated separately. In Yahoo! Messenger 10, there are two new buttons in the IM window – one for Video Call, one for Voice Call. Use the Voice Call button only to initiate a voice conversation.

-=-=–
so why when i click Video Call button, voice conversation also being initiated?replying to your message,i think you click both button to initiate video call with voice.do i sound smarter?
what does flora means is JUST bring back button to broadcast the cam without sounds, voices, ringing tones or whatever beeps – like the old version.
Comment by rw — November 4, 2009 #
@rw – That is correct – a video call automatically initiates voice. If you don’t want to transmit voice, I recommend muting your microphone in the video call window.

I can’t even check this version out. Every time I try to install it I get a message that says “The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK to Terminate. I have yet to have a version of Yahoo Messenger that worked fully and completely since around the time of Messenger 7. Anymore, I’m telling my friends to find a new IM Program to use.

About a week ago all sounds in Beta 10 audibles, buzz and alerts disappeared. I have done everything that can be done even unistalled and reinstalled the application to no avail. The sounds play from the location on WMP but not while chatting. Window shakes on buzz still no sound. I am using Vist Hm Prem on a Lenovo 5800 all quite new. Would love to have my sounds back, HOW?

why can’t i upgrade to messenger 10 with my Mac? why do i get an older outdated version option when i click the version of messenger 10 for Mac to download?
Comment by Skimchick — December 3, 2009 #
why older versions of yahoo can send cam to v10 but not the other way around? I know eventually everybody will be required to simply use v10 but would be very useful during the long period of transition. I miss the plain send cam option without it having to be a video conference.

I was hoping they would add an emoticon editor. Like if you wanted to add an emoticon that winks but has it’s tongue out or it has it’s tongue out but has its eyes closed, something like that. It kinda adds more depth to the chat, when it comes personal discussions. Makes it more interesting and lively. Oh and I like the new yahoo 10 though it crashes sometimes when I log in

I found a way to get the Windows 7 native Aero Glass theme to work with Yahoo.
What I did was, I went into Program Files (x86) and found Yahoo>Messenger>Skins
First, cut away all skins but the default skin.
Then enter the default skin folder and remove the ‘theme’ folder. I created a folder for all of the cut away skins, and I put this in it as well in an easy to locate place.
The result is that it is Aero Glass (http://i805.photobucket.com/albums/yy338/Jafloogan/yahooaero.jpg)
One problem, is that some of the text became unreadable tiny. BUT, this isn’t an issue if you know what you’re doing, plus mouse overs solve this, and I think we all know the Aero Glass is more important

Comment by Vanessa — April 26, 2011 #
I uninstalled it immediately for these first 2 reasons.
1) It installed yahoo helper tool bar without asking permission. If it did ask me permission it was hidden.
2) to import saved conversations you have to give Yahoo permission to access you conversations.
I never even used it for one second, imagine that !
