Status update: Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone

August 19, 2009 on 4:47 pm | In iphone | 42 Comments

My bad, I was mistaken. As some of you might have seen earlier, I wrote a post incorrectly calling out Apple for a delay in the iPhone app approval process. This is what I get for partaking in too much of the free caffeine we get here on the Yahoo! campus…

Turns out I didn’t have the latest information about our Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app, which is awaiting approval and release by Apple.

If you want all of the gory details… Two weeks ago we submitted an updated version of Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone to the App Store for approval, but withdrew it to make some additional fixes and enhancements. Doing so reset the approval process timeline.

So the newly submitted Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app has been with Apple for less than a week, and is well within the timeframe for their approval process.

Mea cupla. We’re a big company and despite all our fabulous technology, we can get our wires crossed and a certain blogger (yup, me) can jump the gun.

We’re thrilled that all of you are enjoying Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone, and we look forward to working with Apple to bring you the update soon.

Sarah Bacon
Product Manager

  1. I wonder if Sarah will be fired for this major gaffe against Apple. This is quite bad.

  2. People make mistakes – IMO I’d consider this a learning experience rather then something to fire someone over.

I can’t even fault Sarah for thinking the worst of Apple – there is a lot to take issue over with the current way apple manages the entire app approval process. Looking forward to the FCC follow-up, :-)

  3. Hehe… no biggy. Anything you can share with us on what’s fixed/changed/added in the upcoming version? Thanks.

  4. Sarah should be fired anyway, because she keeps ignoring the horrible porn bot problem, and continues to remove any posts about it. It’s really, really sad when someone acts as childish as she does….why not just make a blog entry saying she supports porn and porn bots and doesn’t give a darn about people who want to chat without being bothered? Really, Sarah and the powers that be, GROW UP!

  8. No wonder Yahoo! has lost it’s mojo. Their product manager doesn’t even know the app review processes, nor that changes are made to her product.

Yahoo! get a better product manager.

    Fire Sarah Bacon

  9. Yes, I have to agree. Bad product managers ruined the company. Sarah Bacon is a prime example.

  10. Sarah is a f-in idiot. Look forward to her being fired. Love how you deleted the original post you tightwad. Own up to the fact that Y! Mobile rules your world and you are nothing other than an internal API babysitter. Loser.

    Comment by Google Lover — August 19, 2009 #

  11. I am quite surprise how many people are crucifying Sarah for this. She made a mistake, acknowledged and corrected it in the blog.

    We should all move on.

I can’t blame her nor anyone who develops apps iPhone for being frustrated at Apple. They are notoriously complicated and slow when it comes to app approval.

  12. Just goes to show how incompetent this woman is. The least a “product manager” should know is whats happening with her products. Quite sure she wont get fired but then its no surprise considering the rut yahoo is in.

  15. She is so incompetent that she is busys herself censoring legitimate complaints about failing products and announcing new gimmicks rather than working at the problems at hand. That’s pretty bad. Yahoo! is in very rough shape, in part, because of staff like her.

    Comment by Tim — August 20, 2009 #

  16. Your apology doesn’t sound much like one. Take responsibility. Please use the words “apologize” or “I’m sorry.”

You should have not blamed Apple so quickly.

  18. @SM – Some minor changes like sound tweaks, preferences. Minor but I think you’ll appreciate them. Once it’s available in the store, I’ll let you all know the full details of what’s in it. Thanks,

  19. Seriously folks, it’s a mistake not the end of the world. Maybe you all don’t work in the corporate world but things like this could easily happen in a large company, we’re not all perfect. The fact is that she recognized she made a mistake and owned up to it. She could have just not said anything and left her previous post as it, now THAT I could justify a public outcry but not this, c’mon, really.

    Comment by Alan Williams — August 20, 2009 #

  20. Well, Sarah was being nice here! It is understandable. The whole world knows about how unpredicatble Apple’s app review process is.

Sarah, consider releasing your app fro Cydia at the same time. That way, we can give you feedback. Don’t forget that Cydia users are much more geeky/technical, so better feedback! It is perfectly legal (Qik and Tap Tap originally started from Installer/Cydia).

Cheers and come on people, why should Sarah be fired for speaking her mind? On a sidenote : Apple should fire ATT.

    Comment by Kiran — August 20, 2009 #

  21. Nice to see a retraction when the information was incorrect. There are problems with the AppStore though. Look no further than iKeepass (encrypted password program). The app takes a long to time get a response from apple to just get rejected for seemingly dubious things. The app was originally submitted in march I think. I am one of the people waiting for the release because we use the desktop version so we don’t want to use a different password storage program.

If you really want some insight into what developers are going through…

  22. Boy a lot of people have time on their hands. Calling on Sarah to be fired because she misunderstood Apple’s App Review timelines and ‘didn’t apologize hard enough’?

    Get a life.

Messenger team: Can’t wait to see the app!

    Comment by Kevin Fox — August 20, 2009 #

  23. It’s OK. Mistakes happen. To show how sorry you are, you can arrange for one of the following to happen:
+ Feature parity between Mac and Windows Messenger. You want to talk about things taking too long?
+ Acknowledge that 95% of people haven’t bothered filling out the stupidly useless profiles you forced on us without asking, and give us back what was already working before.
+ Get someone with an actual brain to sort out the spam bot problem in the rooms and perhaps save yourselves from irrelevance.
+ Employ someone to man your help desk
+ Stop using retarded phrases like “reach out” when all you mean is “talk to”.

    Any of those?

    Nah. Thought not.

    Comment by Ian Davies — August 20, 2009 #

  24. How about a flash or java based mobile messenger? So that all mobile users can use it, not just iPhone users.

    Comment by Saurabh — August 20, 2009 #

  25. Yahoo really needs to pull it together. Didn’t a similar situation happen a few weeks ago with the push update? You screwed it up then had to pull and resubmit it? On another note is the final version of Yahoo Messenger for Mac still stuck in the “approval” process after what 3 years? Someone is being incompetent here and it isn’t Apple.

    Comment by jeremy — August 20, 2009 #

  26. Mistakes happen, it’s not like Apple has had a lot of good press about the App Store approval process either. No harm, no foul.

On the plus side, I’m anxious to see the new Yahoo messenger w/ Push notification (so I can finally ditch AIM)

    Comment by John B. — August 20, 2009 #

  27. That’s a petty, petty populist whine from a product manager whose company has never set a public deadline or service level.

She deserves a good smack around the ears.

    Sincerely,
    %$#@!

  28. You should FINISH the mac OSX port before complaining about Apple (eve if they are not doing things right…)

    Thank you

    Comment by elton — August 24, 2009 #

  39. @Elton – Push notifications while your phone is in sleep mode do work currently. Can you submit a problem report from your phone with that information? From within the app, tap on Settings, then scroll down and tap “Report Problem”. It will help us see what might be causing the issue on your phone. Thanks
