Help with sign-on issues in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0

August 18, 2009 on 4:23 pm | In 9.0 version | 42 Comments

As more of you are upgrading to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, I see periodic comments on the blog about sign-in issues.

I’ve listed some recommend steps for troubleshooting sign-in issues on Yahoo! Messenger 9.0. If you are having problems, please read through them and follow the instructions to try and resolve your sign-in issues.

1) Be sure you have the latest version of 9.0 (ver. 9.0.0.2162). If you’re not sure what version you have, go to the Help menu in Messenger and select “About Yahoo! Messenger”. Note the version number, and if it’s earlier than the version number above, download and install the latest at http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/win.

2) IMPORTANT: Visit the sign-in troubleshooting help page and read each section. Follow directions where needed.

3) If you do continue to have trouble signing in after trying the steps above, contact customer care and provide them with answers to the following questions:

a. Indicate what steps you have taken so far when troubleshooting the issue. What settings you’ve changed etc. This will help prevent customer care from asking you to try things that you may have already.

b. What error message are you receiving, if any? Please provide the error message text, as well as any error codes.

c. Using Internet Explorer on your computer, can you successfully sign in to any or all of the following websites? [Note: be sure you use IE, not Firefox]

https://login.yahoo.com/ (Yes/No)
http://mail.yahoo.com/ (Yes/No)
http://webmessenger.yahoo.com/ (Yes/No)

d. On your computer, are you able to sign in to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 with any other Yahoo! ID? (Yes/No)

e. On a different computer, are you able to sign in to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 with your Yahoo! ID? (Yes/No)

  2. Thanks for your quick response. Looks like a lot of people have problems with their accounts these days and they really needed a guide like this to know exactly what they have to do in order to gain access to their accounts.

  3. Maybe a login troubleshooter/connectivity tests like in Windows Live Messenger could be useful when issues as such occur? Could check for open ports, default gateway, HOSTS file, DNS, proxy settings, etc. My guess is *some* of the login issues has something to do with a firewall and/or router blocking the connection/ports.

Also a server status function would be very useful when/if the servers are currently down or up.

  4. Hi Sarah,

Thanks for your post .. regarding the trouble shooting of yahoo messenger …

but i am facing some different kind of issue while login my yahoo id in messenger ” Your account has been locked”

i was searching on internet and came across below interesting post http://yahoo-exploit.blogspot.com/2009/02/unlock-your-yahoo-id-through-yahoo.html

So is this your security measure to secure yahoo id or is it yours week point which is not yet fixed?

  5. Ok thats good for sign in problem but lately messenger won’t even SHOW UP when i click on it. What’s the deal?

    Comment by Brian Smith — August 20, 2009 #

  6. Brian,

If that happens, then you need to press Ctrl+Alt+Delete to bring up windows Task manager, go to ‘Processes’ tab, find Yahoo messenger process, click on it and press ‘End Process’.

After that you should be able to run yahoo messenger again normally.

If you cannot follow what I wrote, simplest alternative is to logout of windows and login again. It is quicker than restarting computer

  9. Hi.

Since monday i can’t login to yahoo messenger, it sais my password is wrong. When i try to get a new one i get the Sorry your pasword cannot be reseted online. I got this after some Photo Sharing. About 25 people i met on forums these days, had the same problem but Yahoo Customer Care answered their mails and now their account works. I wrote two mails already, and i wonder, why my account does not work yet. What am i doing wrong i wonder?

  11. Dear Sarah,

I can’t contact them cause it wants me to log in after i go to the link you gave me… and i can’t sign in What to do?

  12. Sarah, shame on yahoo…….Its funny how yahoo can go into my internet explorer and alter settings to make it ok for yahoo to have full access to my computer, and not only do they alter that but they alter my security too. I can change the settings after getting out of messenger but once I go back the settings are changed back to full access for yahoo, come off it i am sick and tired of yahoo stalking me and millions of people on the net…you don’t need in our computers thats private, sure you say you have programs to stop that, but all those millions of users that are unaware of what your doing is remarkable, shame on you yahoo for stalking us…

  13. After reading the above post, I went into IE and changed everything that I could in the Security section to “Prompt”. I could get into yahoo mail, my yahoo, etc after that but had to continually say it’s ok to run scripts. I still can not, however, log into messenger.

    Comment by Elaine — August 21, 2009 #

  14. Yes you can contact Customer Care and you will get back the Generic Response Page for Yahoo Help. It’s useless to contact them as they have computer generated responses for everything you send to them. Sarah Bacon is a Fake Name used by employees to post on here to cover up Yahoo’s mistakes, goof ups, and lack of basic help when they screw up or don’t know how to fix what they messed up. Best thing to do is go to the Yahoo Chat Help chat room as ask for help there or do a generic search for help from other users. Stay away from contacting Yahoo Help as its a waste of your time.

  28. the trick to successfully log-in to y messenger after entering correct password, having a reliable internet connection and uncompromised account?try logging out of ymail after disabling chat function;and from a reliable suggestion(tested it actually, works for many similar log in probs) is to right click yahoo icon/s at task bar then exit.or follow sarah’s instructions on task manager.incomplete log outs, left out,not exited “extra” ymessenger chat windows, seem to prevent “new” logins.this is just a simple workaround, but it works!

  41. Hi there just wanted to give you a quick heads up and let you know a few of the images aren’t loading correctly. I’m not sure why but I think its a linking issue. I’ve tried it in two different internet browsers and both show the same results.
