Yahoo! Messenger on the new yahoo.com page

Have you tried out Yahoo!’s new home page yet? This latest version gives you even more ways to customize the page with your favorite news, sites and services.
For the new Beta page, we worked with the team behind yahoo.com to create a new Yahoo! Messenger module. This new version provides a quick view of which friends are online, plus you can easily IM them right from the page. Here’s a quick look at the features of the new Yahoo! Messenger on yahoo.com:
See all your friends in one place
Like the versions we currently offer in Yahoo! Mail, this Yahoo! Messenger module will show you all the friends you’re used to seeing in your list, plus other online friends that are in your Yahoo! Address Book. These are grouped under “Your Yahoo! Contacts”. You may see friends in there you didn’t even know were on Yahoo! Messenger so drop them a line to say hi!
Instant message or send a SMS text message
You can start a conversation with a friend right from the home page. Find them in your list and then click the IM or SMS icon to the right. This will launch a new IM window in Yahoo! Messenger where you can start chatting. Note that the SMS icon only shows up when you have a mobile number in your address book for a friend.
Search to find a contact
This one’s handy for those of you with a lot of friends. Use the search box at the top of the module to quickly find a friend in your list. Once you do, click the IM or SMS icon to start a conversation.
Collapse/expand groups
Click the arrows at the right of a group header to expand or collapse a group.
Change how your list is sorted
Click the Settings icon near the top of the module to sort your list alphabetically or in reverse alphabetical order.

This is great! I have a suggestion/request not quiet related, but somewhat related to this. The flash based webmessenger checks for flash player version 10, otherwise it won’t load. It would be great if that script was modified to also allow flash object to load on flash lite. That way many touch screen phone users (other than iPhone) who don’t have native yahoo client, can use the webmessenger.
Thanks,
Saurabh

I am confused as to why you have to give people a tracking cookie every time they open yahoo messenger and even if you happened to clear the cookie out before you leave, when you leave yahoo messenger gives it to you again, seems to me these tracking cookies need to be renamed to stalking cookies seeings they track our every movement on the web and report back to a third party(could be hackers the ones who invade our email and send things to all of our list), or advertisers for products they think we need because we looked on a web site and saw a similar product… Stalking is against the law, why are you allowed to send us a stalking cookie when we open things like yahoo messenger or one of your web sites, the web suppose to be a safer place than what your offering with these stalking cookies???

I love Yahoo.com because it’s more lively n more personal than windows live. To me it actually pops up at u n says I’m here, it’s fashionable, stylish, modern-can personalize it anyway u want(windows too, but not as much), and features unlike windows live. windows live is more business like oriented. Also i agree with some that the chatrooms can use a good clean up-however it really relies on the user to use discrection-on them(yeah rite),they’re not gonna care. I have both windows live and Yahoo, keep up the good work.

To me they seem to be copying AOL. First they copied aol webmail and now AOL homepage. You should just take some inspiration and then be a little creative. In making yahoo mail similar to that of AOL they made it a lot slow, harder to read and buggy. Although new homepage doesn’t seem bad, but hey be a little creative, don’t copy too much.

I’ve been a loyal YAHOO! user for a long time, but the new homepage is enough to make me consider switching to google for good. Running my mouse over an item does not mean I want it to open; I would much rather take the millisecond it takes to click on a link I want to open than for every link to expand every time my mouse rolls over it. I dare say I’m not the only one who finds this annoying. The structure of the page is fine, but that feature is infuriating.

@ Ed, it doesn’t open an item as soon as you hover the mouse over it. They kept a little delay for that reason. So if you are just moving cursor through the screen, you should be fine.
If you are intentionally staying on an item thinking about it, its actually better that it pops up the item menu and gives you more info/description about it.
