Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone update now available
July 20, 2009 on 7:40 pm | In iphone | 177 Comments
The latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (v1.2.1) is now available. Here’s what’s in store for you:
New message alerts
(push notifications)
We’ve taken advantage of Apple’s 3.0 push notifications platform to enable new message notifications. Now, you will be notified when a new IM comes to your iPhone, even if the Yahoo! Messenger app is closed (or your phone is asleep).
The new message alerts for Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone work like the push notifications you get for Mail. When a new message comes in, a badge appears on top of the Yahoo! Messenger app icon on your home screen, indicating the number of new messages. This badge is based on cumulative messages received so whether three friends send you one message or one friend sends you three messages, you’d see a “3” on the app icon either way.
We’ll also pop up an alert on your home screen when a new message comes in. This is similar to when you receive an SMS text message on your phone. A notification overlays your home screen and you can decide whether to view the new IM or just close the alert. Even if your phone is asleep, we’ll wake it up and display the alert message.
You can also be notified with a sound when a new IM comes in. If your iPhone is muted, it will vibrate instead.
You can choose to use all or none of these new message alerts. To set your preferences, tap “Settings” on the home screen, then “Notifications”, and finally “Yahoo! Messenger”. From there you can turn on/off the sound, alert or badge notifications (they’re defaulted on when you install the app).
Now that new message alerts are included, you may want to make sure your Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app icon is visible on your primary home screen. Get tips from Apple on how to customize your home screen icons. Using the same method, you can also drag and drop the Yahoo! Messenger app icon into your dock.
Stay online for up to 2 weeks
The Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app will keep you signed in and visible to your Yahoo! Messenger friends for up to two weeks. When the app is closed on your phone, your status will show you as online but in an Idle state. Friends can IM you and when they do, you’ll receive a new message notification as described above.
There are a couple of ways your Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone availability can be interrupted. The first is if you sign into Yahoo! Messenger on a different device, such as your computer. Currently you can only be signed into Yahoo! Messenger from one location, so if you tend to move back and forth between your computer and your iPhone, just remember to sign in to your Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app to ensure you’re online.
The other way to go offline on your iPhone is to manually sign out of the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app. In the app, tap on Settings, then scroll down and tap “Sign Out”. This will close the app and you will be offline, no longer able to receive messages on your iPhone.
Buzz your friends…with an iPhone twist
Buzz was one of the most requested features from our users on the iPhone app. So you’ll be happy to know you can now buzz away to your heart’s content. We also gave it a little iPhone flavor. When you want to buzz a friend, just shake your iPhone vigorously. Your friend gets buzzed on their end and you’ll also see the usual BUZZ!!! message in the conversation window.
We also added a few other items… Search in the app is now integrated with the Contacts app on your iPhone. Now when you search for someone’s mobile number so you can SMS them from the Messenger app, they’ll show up, even if they’re not on your Messenger list. We also added a preference to turn off the landscape keyboard option and we fixed a bug so that empty groups in your contact list will no longer be shown.
To download the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone (v1.2.1) that includes these new features, go to the iTunes App Store, or tap the App Store icon on your iPhone and search for Yahoo! Messenger. If you already have Yahoo! Messenger installed, you may also have an update alert for the app.
If you run into any issues with the new version, please use the “Report a problem” feature in the app to let us know. Tap on Settings, then scroll down and tap on “Report a problem”.
We hope you enjoy this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone.

P.S. – If you installed 1.2 last night or earlier today, please uninstall and install it again. The one we submitted last night had some issues with push notifications, so be sure to install this final update. Thanks!

On the notification page…yahoo isnt popping up? Do i need to do anything with any other settings??
Comment by jesse — July 20, 2009 #
Just checked the App Store at 9:05 pm on July 21 and 1.2 is still the version that is available; no push?????
Comment by Chris — July 21, 2009 #
@jesse, @Chris,
After installing 1.2.1 (that is the final new build, if you have 1.2, uninstall it and reinstall from the App Store), you should get a notification upon first sign-in asking your permission for push notifications from Yahoo!. Once you agree to that, push notifications should work (they are for us). If you don’t see Yahoo! under the Notifications menu in Settings, then you have the wrong version of our app. You need 1.2.1.

Apple has not updated their index pages yet, but if you download our app right now, you will get 1.2.1. Apple will update the listing…eventually.

Sarah,
thank you very much for this new version of the Yahoo IM. The push notification now works great. I was wondering if the following features might be in the pipeline for a future release:
1) keeping Available status when not logged into the application instead of switching to idle
2) push notification tone selection
Again, thank you for the delivery of the Yahoo IM 1.2.1. This now makes it a major application for us that use Yahoo IM around the clock
Comment by Pedja — July 21, 2009 #
I definitely dont see the version with push notification. If I click on the iTunes link, I get taken to a 1.2 version which doesnt have push.
How did the rest get 1.2.1?

Sarah Bacon = All is well now…thanks for the fix from yesterday =]. Job well done*

You guys did a very good job with the Push notifications! Thanks for all your hard work!
Comment by Victor — July 21, 2009 #
The PUSH features works like a charm. Thanks for the great update, however when someone trys to BUZZ! me nothing happens, it just says BUZZ! no sound effects at all and the screen does not shake. I didn’t see anything in the settings. How do I get this feature to work?
Comment by Rob Cee — July 22, 2009 #
Thank you, it works like a charm!
One question: how can I collapse/expand groups? Isn’t it implemented yet? Hopefully, this feature will be added in the next release.

Awesome app!! The push and 2 weeks online are great features. Fast update (less than a week!).
BUGS: Landscape keyboard not work (not priority for me)
NO MSN/HOTMAIL BUDDIES – I cannot add or see msn friends (priority)
Comment by fnc — July 22, 2009 #
I agree with Pedja. I would like to be able to set as AVAILABLE and not IDLE when I’m not on the application.
Comment by Sandy — July 22, 2009 #
Sarah – I constantly get the following error “Login failed, please contact customer support”. The old version had no issues at all. Just as soon as I upgraded I’ve been getting this problem. Can you please help? I can’t even log in to send an error report. I know the password is correct, I’m getting all my yahoo mail without a problem. Please help
Comment by A loyal user — July 22, 2009 #
@fnc – Hmm, landscape keyboard is working for me. Might want to check the settings within the app to be sure it isn’t turned off (we added a new preference for landscape keyboard). Also, the app never did show MSN/HOTMAIL buddies; we don’t offer that in our mobile apps at this time. Thanks

@MG – If you’re not getting push notifications, I recommend removing the app from your phone, then reinstalling it from the App Store. You may have gotten the initial 1.2 release that we released to the store on Monday which was not working properly.

. Thanks for the reply!! Now I know there is a yahoo admin here so i am not talking to nobody.
Comment by fnc — July 22, 2009 #
@Sarah – couple of minor things: 1.) initial log in screen still shows “1.2″ version number, 2.) Please update the release date info in the iTunes store. It is still showing a latest release date of 3/31/2009.
Comment by Joel — July 22, 2009 #
@Sarah Bacon – can I get a clarification on the “we’ll keep you logged in for 2 weeks” feature? Specifically, I’d like to know if the 2 weeks is reset each time you open the app. In other words, do you get kicked off the app 2 weeks from the time you first launch it; or, instead, does the 2 week period begin anew each time you launch the app, effectively keeping you logged in indefinitely? I’d like to know that if I use the app at least once every two weeks that it will never log me out. Thanks!

push is not workin with my main email account, but it is workin in my second account
why is this?
it was workin fine yesterday
Comment by Tommy H — July 22, 2009 #
@Brett – Yes, the 2 weeks “resets” every time you actually go in and use the app. So as long as you actually go into the app at least once every two weeks, you’ll stay signed in. This also assumes you don’t sign in on your PC which automatically signs you out from the iPhone app. Hope that helps.

the problem is not with my email because when i sign in to yahoo messenger with that name on my pc it works
when i sign in with that name to the yahoo app i can send and receive messages but push does not work
If i sign out and log in with another name int he same yahoo iphone app push works
but push doesn’t work with my main username
so it has nothing to do with my email not working
i tried uninstalling and reinstalling but that didnt work
how can i get push working?
Comment by Tommy H — July 22, 2009 #
I have problem similar to Tommy H. My wife’s YM app stopped working. I can use my login and push works but it would not work on her login. We tried on 2 different iPhones with the same result. It’s awesome when it works though so we would appreciate any fix. Thanks.
Comment by drin — July 22, 2009 #
@Sarah Bacon,
Id like to know if SmS messages also use this push feature.
It appears that the SmS messages wont push but the IM messages will.
Id like to know if its possible for you guess to push SmS if its not a current feature.
Also, I keep getting a repeated push message over and over again despite the fact the user only sent it once.
It just keeps spamming the same message. Any thoughts?
Great job Team Yahoo.

@sarah
The new version rocks! BUT, will you guys support multiple logons in future? Signing out of iPhone app automatically is not a good idea if I login my PC version occassionally once in a while and having to start the iPhone app again just to keep it alive is tedious. Thanks!
Comment by JoeR — July 22, 2009 #
Ya, Push stopped working here also. So just to see if I could reproduce Tommy H, and Drin’s issues I then logged on with a different Yahoo account, and it worked on that acct. Logged back onto main acct, and doesnt work.

I was wondering if the logon data (user and password) goes through SSL or not when signing in with the iPhone Messenger? I think this is important when using public wifi spots

YAHOO.. Please provide the Preview off option. I don’t want my IM’s to be readable.. Other than that, good update.
Comment by Jack — July 23, 2009 #
Hi Sarah,
Let me be more specific. With the built in SMS app on my IPHONE, I can switch Preview to ‘off’ so when my Iphone is not on me and I get an SMS. I just get “ID so and so.. text message”. It does not show what was written until you click the button “view”. Sarah, please pass this on to your programmers and ask if they can put this for the next update. Once this is available, I really don’t see what else you could improve upon. It would just be PERFECT! Thanks Sarah

Ive LOST push. It was working and now its gone.
Also, Id still like to have the option to change my screen name while sending a text. Would be a great feature to have.
@Sarah Bacon, What happen to push? Its broken.
P.s Ive reinstalled this program 100 times trying to make push work again with no luck.
Comment by SyNisT3r — July 23, 2009 #
Hi Sarah,
The 1.2.1 version app is working great for me (push notifications and all) except for one issue. The contact search. I can do a search and see some of my iPhone contacts and their SMS numbers, but not all of them. For instance, a search for “P” should return three of my iPhone contacts, but it only returns two of them. I’ve tried restarting the phone as well as reinstalling the app to no avail. The only other thing I do “different” is using Google Sync to synchronize my contacts. Could that be an issue?

My experience:
Initially it looked like the PUSH does not work over EDGE. It rocked when my iPhone 3GS is connected to a wireless network though.

For some reason if my status in IM is blank, my friends all see my status set in their lists as “Fan UCLA Bruins.” I don’t know where that comes from as it’s not set in any of my Yahoo! lists anywhere. Any idea where to even look to identify why my status is set that way?
Comment by bd — July 24, 2009 #
@bd – that is most likely a Yahoo! update that you’re sharing with your Messenger friends. In Messenger 9.0, there is an additional line under your name in their lists that shows your latest updates (from Yahoo! and other sites). So if you marked yourself as a fan of the UCLA Bruins on Yahoo! Sports, and you’re sharing your updates, that’s why they’re seeing that. More info on updates and sharing them in Messenger here: http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2009/04/24/sharing-updates-in-yahoo-messenger-90/
You can change your update preferences by going to: http://profiles.yahoo.com/settings/updates

They replied:
“Hello Andrew,
Thank you for writing to Yahoo! Mobile.
If your friends list does not display a complete list of your friends,
you could have your messenger settings set to “view only online”
friends.
To change this setting, please sign into Yahoo! Messenger, while viewing
your friends list access the “menu” area. In the menu you will be able
to change the display option for your friends list. The “Show All

I reported a problem — namely, that the contacts on the phone don’t always appear. I have one contact that usually signs-in from MSN with their Yahoo account. It’s missing on the phone, even though I can see him offline in the desktop client and the web client.
Comment by Matt — July 26, 2009 #
Login no longer possible.
With Version 1.2.1 and even after a delete and totally new install it is no longer possible to initiate a login procedure with a german YAHOO.DE account. A YMAIL.COM account works with no problem.
Initiate means:
After pressing the Sign In Button, a circle appears for a 3G communication with the working ymail.com account. If the normal main Yahoo ID is used (with and without @yahoo.de), no 3G connection is even tried. “Login failed, please contact customer support.”
It is not one of the “normal” login problems like in multi messengers. Because login in the general Yahoo app works.

I can’t seem to get the push feature to work for me no matter how many times I uninstall and reinstall the app. Are there any other settings that could affect this? I generally have the settings > messages > show preview set to off, but even putting this to on doesn’t give me push. All of the notifications settings for yahoo are set to on, and still no push.
I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app about 4 times, but it’s still not working. Any other troubleshooting ideas to get this to work. I was WAY excited for this since it’s the only chat program that I use consistently, and of course, push is an awesome feature. Just wish I could get it working.

Hi Sarah, thanks for the quick reply. I did that already but was hoping there was some easy trick you could provide. Will they respond to my reported problem?
Comment by Rachelle — July 29, 2009 #
@Sarah, thanks for your answer. No I do not have Yahoo! OneConnect installed….

I have Iphone 2G version and loaded the OS 3.0 and also installed the yahoo messenger 1.2.1. For some reason i am not getting alerts (like popup) when new im arrives.
Can you help me. I tried both 2G and wifi
Comment by vkumar — July 30, 2009 #
@Elton – It would be great if you could file a problem report from the app. That way we can get diagnostics on your setup. To submit a report, log in to the app, tap on settings, then scroll down and tap on Report a Problem. Thanks,
Sarah Bacon
Comment by Administrator — July 30, 2009 #
@Rachelle – You won’t get a response necessarily but the team can try to replicate your issue and see if there is in fact a bug that is happening. So your submitted report could help other users as well. Thanks

Multiple logons please. I second that. It’s quite annoying to get signed out of the iPhone when I occasionally log on my Yahoo mail w/ messenger. PLEASE

Comment by RobbertkiD — August 1, 2009 #
@Sarah Well it seems I’ve got the one phone that the push notifications DON’T work on. *shrug* It’s okay though, because for the most part, the app crashes an awful lot for me too. And like other’s have complained, the Buzz feature is really annoying since you can’t disable it.
Thanks anyway. I think I’ll find another chat program that will work appropriately. *shrug*

Hi – same problem re contacts above. only 1 of my contacts shows up. please help this is very annoying and I want to be able to use this app I have been wating for it
Comment by machoo — August 2, 2009 #
Like the app very much. Good job on that. Just wanted to comment on a few things.
I find offline status icon’s grey color is very difficult to see under low light conditions. It could easily be mistaken for yellow, i.e. online. It’s easy to ened up sending a message to an offline person w/o realizing that.
It would be nice to be able to copy part of the text in the conversion window, i.e. not just the text one’s typing but from the previous replies.
Also, I’m having problems seeing contact pcitures on iPhone. They do show up fine in the web UI. Any ideas on whats’ going on?
Keep up the good work!
Comment by SM — August 2, 2009 #
I use the app mainly for SMS with push enabled, but have been having a ridiculous number of problems- messages are being mangled when sent out (receiver just gets garbled characters), messages coming in have been dropped, or they show up in the push message and then don’t appear in the app… and crashing. I’ve had multiple instances where the app will crash on launch (never makes it to sign in screen) where I’ve had to reinstall the app (restarting the phone didn’t help)
Comment by BC — August 4, 2009 #
@BC – Sorry to hear about the issues you’re having. It would be really helpful if you could submit problem reports from the app when you run into issues. Then we can better assess the issues you’re having according to your system. To report a problem, tap on Settings when you’re in the app, scroll down and tap on Report Problem. Thanks!

I don’t want the loud and annoying notification whenever I get a YM. I guess I allowed these in my initial signing in process. So I tried deleting and re-installing on my iPhone but didn’t get the Notifications option, as if it kept my selections from my first install.
Am I missing something? Ready to ditch YM…
Comment by John — August 5, 2009 #
@John – No need to delete and reinstall the app to change your notification settings. Just change it in Settings. From your iPhone’s HOME screen, tap on Settings, then “Notifications”, then Yahoo! Messenger. There are three types of notifications – sounds, alerts and badges. Leave one, some or all on or off depending on what you prefer.

Is there a way to change the status message on my iphone so that is does not read “Im Mobile” but rather available?
Comment by Steve — August 6, 2009 #
@Steve – Actually, if you’re on an iPhone or a Blackberry and signed in, it will not give you an “I’m Mobile” status next to your name on your friends’ lists. That status is only used when someone is on another type of mobile device. When you’re on your iPhone it will show you as signed on (and then “Idle” if you exit the app on the phone but are still signed in).

@ Sarah – the new verions works very well, push notifications are great too, no crashes at all. I prefer the iphone app over the pc one. But i have a few suggestions for the next version:
1. AbiIlity to view the whole conversation with a certain buddy (not just the last lines) – a button to view this, whould be great.
2. Ability to set your avatar directly from the app (acces the iphone camera, use existing / take new foto)
3. Ability to use the stealth settings for contacts in the app
4. Let users manage their status messages, not just when they are using the app, but also when they are not using it. On the desktop version if you set a status message, being idle for a certain amount of time whould change your text status? The answer is no. Hope it gets fixed.
5. Ability to change the notification sound, please (add a few more)
6. Ability to change the log on time, not all of us would want to be idle for 2 weeks.
7. Add support for copy / paste inside the conversations.
Thanks for making this app and i’m looking forward to seeing the next version.
Comment by Alszu — August 7, 2009 #
Ough, and the most important
Visibility. Make the text field just for one row. It’s useless to have two lines and nothing to see in the chat ‘window’
Comment by Alszu — August 7, 2009 #
As Alszu says, please let us set stealth settings for individual contacts, or at least groups in future. Especially for push!

Hi Sarah! Quick question…my boyfriend is a US Soldier deployed so we use messenger as a means of communication. I used to sign into Yahoo Mobile so that I was “mobile” on people’s list. that stopped working
So i uploaded 1.2.1 Messenger on my Iphone. It read it says you will stay logged in for 2 weeks, and you will go idle. Here are my questions
1. If I log in before bed, and sleep 8 hours, i will be idle and still able to receive messages correct? I dont want to miss him.
2. Why did SMS stop working? It was perfect before…
3. I am signed into my Iphone at work all day. I sign out when I get home and sign in on my PC. Does the 2 weeks start all over again when i sign back into my Iphone messenger?
Thank you for taking the time to help me. Im sure he appreciates it too
Comment by April K — August 12, 2009 #
One more thing Sarah, if you dont mind. I also have Yahoo! OneConnect on my phone…….should I take that off????
Comment by April K — August 12, 2009 #
@April:
Q. If I log in before bed, and sleep 8 hours, i will be idle and still able to receive messages correct? I dont want to miss him.
As long as you sign in on the iphone after leaving your PC, you will receive messages, even if you’re not actually in the app or your iphone is asleep. If your phone is asleep, the message will still come through, similar to an SMS message.
A: Yes, you can sleep in peace.
Q. Why did SMS stop working? It was perfect before…
A: Hasn’t stopped working as far as we know. Please use the report problem feature in the app to report any issues. You’ll find it under Settings in the Y! Messenger for iPhone app
Q. I am signed into my Iphone at work all day. I sign out when I get home and sign in on my PC. Does the 2 weeks start all over again when i sign back into my Iphone messenger?
A: Yes, the 2 weeks starts anew everytime you sign out and back in to Messenger on your iPhone.
Q: I also have Yahoo! OneConnect on my phone…….should I take that off????
A: Yes, we recommend removing it. You should use the Yahoo! iphone app for other Yahoo! services, and Y! Messenger for iPhone for Messenger features.

@Sarah….ty so very much. you put my heart at ease
In regards to the SMS not working……before I installed the Iphone messenger, I would sign into yahoo mobile SMS at 92466….well now my messages arent received by my contacts, and its hit or miss if i get theirs. thats what I meant
from what I know the messenger for Iphone is working awesome….any insight? I removed OneConnect as well.
Comment by April K — August 12, 2009 #
@April K – Hmm, I would not know where to begin with the 92466 codes. I found this page on the mobile site but not sure it’s anything new to you: http://mobile.yahoo.com/messenger/sms
You could also contact mobile customer care: http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/mobile/forms_index.html

One other quick question….I got logged out of the Messenger while in a meeting (it was in my desk drawer…by the way it drops the signal) and I was wondering if I sign back in……does any missed messages push to me and tell me? Or do I have to log into messenger on the PC….or do i miss them all together…LOL Just curious. Thank you for being so helpful!!
Comment by April K — August 13, 2009 #
@April K – Yes, offline messages are supported with Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone. So if you’re signed out and someone IMs you, then you sign in, you will see those messages waiting (as long as you didn’t get them on your PC). Hope that helps,

I love this app. I only have two small complaints. I REALLY wish I could change the alert sound. It’s loud and obnoxious. The other thing is the placement of the send button is awkward. It should be out of the typing area. I inadvertently hit send often in the middle of typing a message because it’s right there next to the space bar.

It’s august 19th now and when I download the app from app store and start the app, the splash screen says version 1.2 even though it says 1.2.1 in the app store.
Could appstore be feeding the wrong version?
There is no update available and I tried uninstalling and restarting and installing again.
I noticed that when I start the download from app store I get a message saying something like ‘this app is free because you have already purchased’. Could it possibly be downloading the previous version that I downloaded…???
This is really frustrating =/
But I realize this may be a problem with the App Store….
Any suggestions?
Comment by Sage — August 19, 2009 #
@Sage – The app store is providing the correct, latest version which is 1.2.1. After you install it, sign into the app and tap the Settings icon. Scroll down and you should see the version number (1.2.1) in the About section.

I’ve been using yahoo messenger app for my iphone and it just works well for me.
But, since I’m a HEAVY user for Yahoo messenger, I got my iPhone only can be used till the afternoon (half day).
e.g. after 1 hour full chatting usage, my battery will only last at around 70%.
Any other user has the same problem with me?

I love this app, but there is ONE thing I would love to see changed. Please, Oh, God, Please, give me the option to disable my BUZZ feature on my 3GS. Sometimes I’ll put it in my pocket and my girlfriend gets 50 BUZZs and she’s about ready to kill me. For those of us who don’t use the BUZZ feature, there isn’t enough medication to keep me sane when this happens. Please consider in the update. Thank you…on behalf of my girlfriend.
Comment by Brent — August 23, 2009 #
@Brent
I have an easy hint to disable BUZZ.
Point out somewhere above the keyboard during conversation as it would fold down the keyboard before you put the phone into your pocket.
The phone won’t BUZZ anyone without keyboard being activated. Plz have a try and update. Hope it will help you
@Redjaru:
you use it every day, but do you have any battery issue?
how long do you use it per day?
Comment by Ocky — August 24, 2009 #
i used it every single day, in fact i kept it on 24/7
i do have battery problems,it happens when im on chat with someone(when the application is running). when the app is closed(push notification mode)it does affect the battery to drain faster, but not much.
Comment by redjaru — August 24, 2009 #
Sarah, ok you’re right I do have 1.2.1 – but then this means that the push notification isn’t working when it should be.
Have there been any reports of push not working with jailbroken & unlocked phones?
Thanks!
Comment by Sage — August 24, 2009 #
@Sage – We don’t test or develop for jailbroken phones so if that is what you’re using, it’s likely that is the cause of the issue.

Hi Sarah, for organizational purposes I will number my questions.
1. I am currently in Spain and have been using Yahoo SMS via the iPhone messenger app.
2. I have been successfully sending and receiving SMS to users in the United States and India AND receiving push notifications.
3. As of two days ago approx. They same cell users I have been successfully sending and receiving SMS are still receiving my SMS but I am not receiving their responses.
4. I open my iPhone app several hours after several people whom I successfully received from before and I have no messages. Therefore push notifications are obviously not working,
5. I have logged out and back in several times and done a soft reset on my iPhone and I am still not receiving SMS.
Question: Are there server issues recently?
Thank you, Jasmer
Comment by Jasmer — October 18, 2009 #
I think it would be a good idea to implement volume control for the incoming messages when the iPhone is in sleep mode. Sometimes loud is good, but other times I would like it to be quieter.
Also, is the chat history set for a certain number of messages or a certain amount of memory? I wanted to review a conversation, but it doesn’t scroll very far. If it’s not shown on the screen, does that mean it is gone forever?
Comment by Yohan — October 27, 2009 #
@Yohan – Yes, the chat history on the iPhone version is set to store the last 15 or so messages only. Right now they are not archived beyond that but we hope to change that in the future.
Thanks,

I would really like to see an option to change the yahoo messenger sound or at least set the new message notification to vibrate only. The alert sound is horrible.
Comment by Jon — March 10, 2010 #
I cannot get push to work, my notifications tab says that all of the yahoo messenger options are on (alerts, sounds, badges) my push system is on in the mail options, and I am using a wireless internet network. If i go into yahoo and come back out again it will add a badge to the icon if i have a new message but it does not work by itself. I am still logged in on the app when i come back to it so that is not the problem. I have tried deleting the app and re-installing it with a new user but that does not work either. I am not using a iphone but I am using a ipod touch, version 3.1.3, my yahoo messenger version is 1.3.1. When i originally set up the account and it (yahoo) asked if i wanted notifications i said no, i could not find this option again so i deleted the app and re-installed it with a new user but it never asked me again, is this the problem? If so, how do I access that option again?
Comment by Jason — March 27, 2010 #
everybody is asking in a polite way about MSN buddies. for a business unit, you need to make all kinds of clients at least work in the same way. the mobile client may have different GUI, special features for mobile devices, but it doesn’t make sense to block some of the existing features that already provided in web client and standalone desktop client. if your app cannot make users connect to the MSN contact as other clients, it’s not ready to release! users choose this app, because it’s from yahoo, it’s called yahoo messenger. you’re not making this app work the same way as “yahoo messenger” should. don’t shame yourself, you spend time doing enhancement, yet not working on what you should’ve done long time ago.
Comment by Sherrie — March 27, 2010 #

Comment by Jason — April 5, 2010 #
When I’m on idle and someone calls, texts or emails me…does idle shut off and I become available again? Kinda like when I’m on the computer…when I’m logged on to IM, even if I’m not using IM, but I’m emailing or browsing the web, i become available again.
Comment by lee — May 8, 2010 #
I noticed that messages transmitted through the iPhone app are in plain text, can be easily sniffed by a packet sniffer and see the contents of a message, I also noticed that the URLs are being exposed as well displaying the person’s username and your username when transmitting messages. A serious privacy issue here, I cannot see how yahoo can allow this to happen
Comment by Ack — May 11, 2010 #
Can you customize the alert sound per friend like assigning them a specific ring tone? The alert notification now is REALLY loud.

Hi Sarah (Enhancement)
As a few have already mentioned…notification is great, but I don’t want the message displayed in the notification. I only want to know who sent the message. Apple added this feature for messages (Settings>Messages>Show Preview – which can be turned on or off).
Can you please tell me if and when this feature can be added to your roadmap/product?
Thanks!
