Installation options for Yahoo! Messenger 9.0
June 19, 2009 on 2:54 pm | In 9.0 version | 44 Comments
Since we have a lot of users upgrading to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 right now, I’ve seen some comments/complaints about the extra programs and settings that are bundled with the Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 installer. I thought I’d take a moment to explain what they are and how you can customize your own installation.
In addition to the Messenger client, there are a few other items that you can add at the same time while installing Yahoo! Messenger 9.0: Yahoo! Toolbar, setwww.yahoo.com as your browser’s home page, and set Yahoo! as your default search provider (in the search box that’s built into your browser window).
On the first screen of the installer, the additional items are listed. You’ll also notice two items at the top – typical install and custom install. Click on the custom install link and it will show you a more detailed set of options for your install including desktop and quick launch shortcuts, Yahoo! Toolbar, and the homepage and search settings mentioned earlier (pictured below). Note that if you already have some of these things installed or set (e.g. you already have Yahoo! as your homepage), they won’t appear in the list of options.
If you want all of these items installed along with Yahoo! Messenger, just click the Next button at the bottom. Or uncheck the boxes for the items you don’t want. None of them are required for the installation of Yahoo! Messenger, they are simply extras that we offer to our Yahoo! users.
These same options are offered during the automatic upgrade process that happens when we offer you a new version at sign-in (which many of you are now seeing for Yahoo! Messenger 9.0). These same customization options are available in that installation wizard as well.

Hello,
Why do you still ship all this bloat by default, when a lot of people just disable it at the first run?A lot of bandwidth could be spared on your side… You could use something like Winamp is doing, with more installers having different feature sets for everyone..
Also, why do you keep forcing the new protocol and let the Linux people out, once again?
These prove once again that your lousy company doesn’t care about the users, but only how to make greater profit.

Actually I still just wish during install you would quit changing my setting on starting Yahoo automatically. I turn it off EVERY TIME I upgrade, because you keep turning it on.

I have lost too many personal informations from my previous pc and I was told differently.
Comment by the flex — June 19, 2009 #
But why check them by default? If a user is interested, let him check them. Everytime I and friends of mine install Yahoo! Messenger, I have to do a lot of extra clicks just to disable all of the extra crap. Then I also have to find a patched Yahoo! Messenger to remove the stupid space/bandwidth using/annoying ads.
Comment by Luckyy — June 19, 2009 #
It seems most people want these options off by default, and you are supposed to be creating these services for your users, so why not make them off by default – I get sick of having to untick them each time.

I have Google as search engine, and it works much better than any old-fashion search engine. Why should I use Yahoo search as my default web page?
Not everyone likes it’s web browser bloated, and I know that when I do need to search for something, I don’t want to make a coffee break as the browser loads all kinds of toolbars and plugins and stuff. That’s why I keep an ad blocker, no toolbars, and I clean up the cache as regularly as possible. Why do you push a useless toolbar?
As said by a previous poster, it’s annoying turning off start-up loading of YM, why not make it a post-install mandatory choice before the installer exits? Plus, having a lot of programs starting at start-up means a nearly unusable computer for the first 10-20 minutes of work, and some of us really needs the computer to be up and running as soon as possible.
I am using Linux about 80% of the time; should Yahoo compile a version that could work under Wine I couldn’t be happier. However, since this particular wonder will not happen, I am forced to use either pidgin or kopete, both very spartan in useful features. And now, they no longer work.
Good going, Yahoo. Keep thinking that ad pushing is more important than keeping your user base happy, and you’ll soon be a victim of the newest hype on the net at instant messaging , whatever that will be.

I would like the option to keep the face of my old Messenger and I like the old emoticons better than the new ones, but the option is not always there and I don’t know how to get them back. Can I have the update with the old face and emoticons?

Why did my audibles, buzz and photo options dissappear when Yahoo automatically upgraded me? How do I get these options back on my messenger – I’ve been thru the menus but I’m totally lost – can someone help?

For folks having trouble with YM, you will not get help by complaining in the comments section of this blog. You can come join our Yahoo Group For Yahoo Messenger at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/yahoo_messenger

I have a computer services biz. and have tried to install {repeatedly} the 9 version into a Vista Home [fully updated] computer for a customer [who insists upon using it disregarding my advise].
The download and installation proceeds to finish, HOWEVER, the only user which has any access [even though installed via a standard user's account] is the administrator’s account. OBVIOUSLY, unless one is a complete moron, the administrator’s account is NOT used for Internet access, nor should it be used during initial set-up other than to allow installation…
I see no area in which to allow access, nor should I need to, as once installed into the standard user’s account [via the administrator's authorization] all of the application/usage should be handled there…
Reading the numerous issues associated with YIM, one could reasonably state it appears to be an unreliable product.
Yahoo answers [if one can call them that] and this blog seem to devoid of helpful information regarding installation issues, and error corrections.
Simple and direct answers, or links to the relevant materials pertaining to installation issues and error corrections would be appreciated and certainly conducive to potential and/or existing users.

@amir -
Sounds like you may have downloaded our Indian version which does not have voice services in it. I recommend uninstalling and then going to our US site (http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/win) to install the US version which has all the features.

I have searched high a low, but cannot find an answer as to why there is no version of YM 9 for Linux.
You guys are currently developing for Win, Mac, Web, iPhone and Mobiles, but still no Linux???
With the proliferation of Linux based netbooks along with the large linux installed userbase, surely it makes sense to develop it. After all, you guys developed it for OSX and as we all know, Linux and OSX are closely related.
I have tried various different alternatives to YM on Ubuntu and to be honest, most are rubbish. Pidgin is probably the best of the lot of them, but i can’t use my Yahoo credit with that!
Seriously though, I can get YM on my mobile phone, but yet I can’t get it on my netbook. It seems stupid to me, just plain stupid.

Is there any chance that a future version of Yahoo! will allow me to disable the skin and use AERO in Windows Vista/7 please? I am tired of Yahoo not looking consistent with the rest of my OS, when aero is a LOT prettier than ANY of the Yahoo! themes (particularly cuz NONE of them have foggy translucent borders or fade effects when handling the windows).
I always noticed Yahoo! is always a few steps behind when it comes to appearances (Yahoo! Games UI still looks as plain as windows 95, for instance), but please allow us to at least disable the Yahoo! Themes so we can have it use Aero like all our other programs.

Yahoo… when are you going to get a Linux version. I have stopped running windows all together and as other have mentioned, it is ridiculous that I can have in on Windows, Mac, iPhone, Mobile Phone, Blackberry, etc but not on Linux. The only version of Linux yahoo messenger looks like a joke and if I understand what I have been reading, wouldn’t even connect to the yahoo network anyway anymore. As Jonny said, if its not something y’all are looking into and planing on fixing soon, then I will just move off of Yahoo altogether and I will encourage any of my friends/family/clients to do the same, whether they are on Linux or not.
This is ridiculous to be ignoring such a growing user base.

I just got a new computer but every time i try and install YIM it says that i cant do it cause of firewall, the thing is my firewall is turned off so what do it do its making me angry

I just upgraded to the new 9.0 version because I was being prompted every time I logged in. I was nervous about upgrading because it looked so different. I am happy to say I like it so far… except for one thing. The placement of the typing notification message (”… is typing a message.”) It now appears at the bottom of the conversation pane. In the version, I upgraded from, it appeared at the very bottom of the window below the typing pane. This was much better because I could keep all my msg windows at the very bottom of my screen and get advanced warning of when someone was sending me a message. Now the message is so high up, I can’t see it because the things I am working on cover up that part of the msg windows.
Please, please, please change this back. If not, I guess I will downgrade because I think this will be a deal breaker for me.

My father is using an older computer with Windows 98. He is getting messages suggesting Yahoo Messenger 7 will stop working after August 15. It appears that Messenger 9 requires Windows XP. Is this true? If so, what can be done to keep him on line? He is not able to upgrade his PC or operating system.

On BOTH of my Dell notebooks… whenever I upgrade to ANY version later than 7.0 – I have an issue with it logging me off and back on – repeatedly all day long. Pretty much every minute or so. I have tried to upgrade to the last 2 releases… and still had the problem. So I had to uninstall and go back to version 7.0. I’ve heard other people say the same thing. What is the problem??? And why do only SOME computers have the problem?
Comment by Shelley — July 2, 2009 #
Should have made it clear in my last post: I’m talking about Yahoo versions that keep logging me off… and the only version that seems to WORK is 7.0…. and now I keep getting all these messages telling me my 7.0 version will no longer work after 8/15/2009. Well guess what?? The NEW versions don’t work for me AT ALL. So I guess I’ll have to find another chat client.
Comment by Shelley — July 2, 2009 #
I have noticed that I am getting the same problem, its hard to keep up a conversation when I am having to reopen a new chat window with them every few minutes because the one I had open has logged in and out so many times that it no longer responds to anything. Am wondering now if I should go find an older version of Yahoo as well to use till the bug gets found and worked out.(if it helps anyone its happening to me on a 2008 toshiba satelite dual processor with Vista). Hope the bug gets found and worked out soon!

Hello, I have downloaded the new version of Yahoo Messenger and it is not working for me. I deleted previous versions on my computer and restarted many times. The first time I downloaded it– it worked for a little while and then made my computer freeze, so I restarted. After I did that, I clicked on the icon/link to open messenger and it would not open. So, I uninstalled it again and tried to download it again. This time, it is stuck at 99% and will not finish downloading. I can open messenger, but it will not accept my ID and password. I use this for work and it is compromising my work day today by doing this and costing me money. Please someone help so I can be done with this. Thank you.

Hello Everyone…
On Yahoo Messenger I am curious about two things…
when someone sends you and offline contact note…
I have never used this before…how do you bring it up yourself on Messenger? The other day a contact sent me a Hey…and I was outside/not online…and by the time I came in and noticed another box of Yahoo, but unspecified contact, it was hours too late…and I think I clicked it off by mistake…
Explanation needed on this type of contact.
Second, to see if a contact is showing invisible when really online…online info says hit Conference on Messenger and then the contact name and Invite…there is a Green Talk Button…if that is on, does that mean the contact is onlining Messenger?
It goes off and on I’ve noticed when you bring it up?
Could this all be explained to me?
Thankyou,
Am Novice in these things,
Layna.
Vancouver, Canada.

If you have archives enabled, you should be able to view the logs for that day and retrieve the missing conversation.
