Upcoming iPhone release with push notifications

June 17, 2009 on 10:53 am | In iphone | 66 Comments

Today Apple’s new 3.0 operating system comes out for the iPhone. One of the exciting new features this will bring to the iPhone is push notifications, or the ability for an app to alert you of something even if you’re not running it (similar to how the Mail app on the iPhone alerts you now to new messages).

For Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone, this means you’ll get notified when a new IM message arrives, even if you aren’t actually running the app. Our new version with push notifications is not ready yet, but we wanted to let you know that we are working on it and hope to have it out soon.

We’ll let you know here on the blog when it’s ready.

  1. i quite enjoy how this blog has become a yahoo messenger for the iphone blog, where its using the gui from the yahoo messenger for vista that was killed off and not even covered near as much as this has been

  2. Don’t complain if your a windows user. They gave a MOBILE version of messenger photo sharing before the mac version even got it. How is a mobile version going to get features first.

  7. I bought my iPhone back in mid-May and had push technology on it then. Why are you now just talking about this?

    Comment by browneyedangel — June 18, 2009 #

  8. Dear Mrs Browneyedangel,

Yahoo! are a bit slow to catch on; where others are leading, Yahoo! are following.

    Sir Thomas.

  9. Before the 3.0 update the iphone did not allow apps besides Exchange/Mail to do that.

    Comment by Blah — June 18, 2009 #

  10. LOL Easy to see what happens… iPhone people are whiners just like they whined to AT&T. So Yahoo has to quickly adapt for them.

    Comment by Chris — June 18, 2009 #

  11. Or maybe the iPhone is the first mobile platform to actually support applications like this in any kind of actually useful manner.

    Comment by tt92618 — June 18, 2009 #

  12. Perhaps Yahoo! burnt their bridges with Microsoft, so to spite them they are cosying up to Apple.

    Comment by Tommy — June 19, 2009 #

  13. Just a few comments. I love this app but id like to see somethings added. FIrst, The push is a MUST for iphone 3g and 3gs devices. This is something yahoo should have been ready for the day of the os3 release.
Also, On the sms text message side id like to see an option to add a different name to your text as opposed to the regular yahoo log in name. That would be a big help.
Another thing is giving the sms side more of a true text message feel. Make it look like true sms. I know that would require alot of effort im sure in the programming but it would be nice to have.
I appreciate how well yahoo messengar for iphone works. Its the only app that ive never had a single problem with. Just needs a couple more features to make it perfect.

  14. OK.. you use xcode to make Messenger for iPhone.. how bout using it to get the Mac version out of beta?

  15. Will the push notification also notify you of when your buddies come online? If so, then that would be nice.

  18. To: Sarah Bacon, Product Manager.

In addition to the PUSH feature for the I-Phone YIM application, it would be great for the app to be able to store and alert for more than a single ID.

Signing in and out of multiple IDs is time consuming.

    Thank you, Lance

  19. Finally! I cant wait for the update for push notifications on YM for iPhone. But if youre going to have an update, please let it read HIDDEN EMOTICONS coz it cant, a buzz feature, more emoticons, ipod to PC calls and an alert if a contact goes online or offline… It will be really great if you add the stuff ive mentioned.

  26. We use Y!M a lot in our office and it will be so nice when the push notifications are done, until then it’s not really a viable mobile communications tool… who has the attention span for just keeping one app open?

Please hurry! The update is sorely needed!

  27. Yahoo! Messenger iPhone app is one of my most eagerly awaited push app (the other being a Twitter client).

    Comment by nutmac — June 29, 2009 #

  28. Wow, this is taking longer than expected. The yahoo app was already very late on the scene. Is this update going to be the same way?

    Comment by dmag — June 30, 2009 #

  29. This comment is for the person that referred to iphone users as whiners! If you think were whiners then go to the Verizon Wireless Website and read some of the reviews on the Blackberry Storm. Im sure since your referring to us as whiners you have never owned or so much as even used an iphone. Let me guess your a Microsoft Fan. Anyway I have never and will never whine about my iphone. It is without a doubt one of the best pieces of electronic equipment ever manufactured.

  30. This is taking some time to publish this app. AIM came out a day or two after OS 3.0 came out. AIM is ok, but I have more friends that use Yahoo. The fact that AIM stays logged in for 24 hours and push notifications makes it a good app, if Yahoo can do the same thing it will make Yahoo a great app. Let’s catch up to the rest Yahoo.

  33. Where the heck is push? What’s up? Is ATT twisting your arm because they know they’ll lose money on messaging?

Is the argument whether or not to restrict push messages to wifi?

I don’t see this in a week, and I’m converting over to something that supports push. No push, and Yahoo IM is pretty much useless on Iphone…

  35. Any news please ? Aim allready has it , time to step up to the plate.

    Comment by Ady — July 5, 2009 #

  36. Release push, or explain. To those who say “hey, it’s free, give them a break” I say, if they can’t release, admit it. If you won’t release, explain it so we can determine if we need to drop this currently dead-end client app. IM+ is out there.

  37. in less then two weeks, 3.0 will have been released for a month and still no PUSH; plus the development kit has been available since what MARCH?! I won’t be using this app any longer until it is updated. AIM wasn’t available same day but at least they got it out the first week. STEP IT UP YAHOO!!!!

    Comment by KB — July 6, 2009 #

  38. I don’t understand why they stay behind. their messenger app wasn’t even released until march or april of this year when the app store had been open since JULY 08! Must do better to keep up.

    Comment by KB — July 6, 2009 #

  39. It’s been OVER a month since the original Yahoo posting above.

I, just like many others, have been asking you to give us an answer for a release date, even if it is only an ‘expected’ release date. Obviously, Yahoo doesn’t read their own blogs, as some have speculated. Very disappointing.

‘Hoping to have it soon’ doesn’t tell us $h!t. “Soon” could be next year when compared to the life expectancy of an oak tree. Unfortunately, you may as well be comparing it to the life expectancy of ants . . . . . . the insect that Yahoo employees and production managers must consider us, the nameless faces on this Blog who are losing their faith in Yahoo’s “abilities”.

Be active with the people that keep you in business, or you may lose your business altogether . . . . . . . . .

  40. Why doesnt push on the yahoo mail app work? i only get email sporadically and about 2-3 hours after its sent to me usually. (Tried fetch too but with no real improvement.)

When push is enabled for yahoo messenger will it also now work for the yahoo mail service already existing on the iphone? If not when will real push email come to yahoo mail on iphone?

    Comment by noel — July 6, 2009 #

  41. This is why they are not successful, they are always 12 months behind everything. Apple should have give the option to PUSH mail from the begining. Yahoo c-ya going to somthing in this century.

  44. C’mon Yahoo…..i thnk its because of the upcoming iphone 3.1 version they don’t want to release the update and in a short tyme release another version that wil work for 3.1 again……….bt 3.1GM is already out…cant you atleast fix an expected release date???

    Comment by Em-nice — July 8, 2009 #

  45. Man you guys are whiny bastards. It’ll be released when it’s released. It takes time considering they have to created a push server and make sure the backend is working properly before releasing it. I’d rather them take the time to do it right than release buggy alpha code.

And if it’s bothering you all so much beejive and IM+ already has push enabled. Purchase their products if it’s that big of an issue for you to wait.

  46. Yet another example of internet anonymity == Stupidity

bdizzle I have your back…. As a developer I totally understand the need for through testing. Come on people… How many apps have both a web interface and stand alone PC interfaces AND iphone interfaces to test???

It is no where near a simplistic situation and I am SURE I am not accounting for all the required testing.

Oh yah and so far it has been FREE….

Sarah Bacon your group kicks ass. PLEASE disregard the anonymous idiots.

  48. I just jailbreak and run backgrounder… the extra memory really helps on the 3GS. My Yahoo IM app no longer gets closed because of lack of memory.

Push would still be very nice although it’s quite intrusive. I’d just like a badge on the app icon showing I have a message versus a pop-up on my screen like the AIM app.

Gotta admit the Yahoo update is annoying considering an AIM update was released very quickly after OS 3.0 updgrade.

    Comment by Mike — July 11, 2009 #

  49. @Monsoon that’s exactly the point. Development takes time, and it has phases it has to go through. I work in IT and a software rollout that can affect approxiamtely 40 million devices shouldn’t just be deployed all willy nilly. Considering there are other alternatives to get Yahoo! messenger with push, I can’t understand all the complaining.

@Mike in AIM you can tell it push what notifications you want to have. Badge, popup, or sound. Its under Settings>Notifications>Aim then pick which notification you want. I’ve been considering getting a 3GS so I can run backgrounder with it. It’s either a 3GS or a new HD camcorder lol. I’m conflicted!

  52. Why does the Yahoo messenger for iphone not work with contacts that are using LCS / Office Communicator? It really degrades the value of a communication tool when half your contacts show offline incorrectly

    Comment by Eric — July 17, 2009 #

  53. Hi,

This is such a great news! Btw, I just have serveral feature requests:
    – stealth setting: show online/offline/permanent offline to a particular buddy/friend
    – Play more with landscape mode: I have to switch to portrait mode to go back to friend list while chatting.
    – (optional) sign-in in landscape mode

    Comment by TomLee — July 20, 2009 #

  54. If you look at how many people downloaded the original YM app, it is obvious that even at a $3.00 charge this is not on the top of Yahoo’s priority list.
It will come out, but its no wonder its already 4 months+ in the making.

    Comment by JeffP — July 20, 2009 #

    Comment by Disappointed — July 21, 2009 #

  64. My guess is that someone just screwed it up and submitted the wrong version to Apple. Bad for Yahoo! Apple has a part to play in this mistake too because they should read into the release notes and try push notifications… why nobody noticed this at all?

    Comment by Sam — July 21, 2009 #

  65. Is the version 1.2 support the push notification feature?
I’m doubt of it as it never ask for permission using the push notification like other apps that have push feature.

I was read at appshopper.com that the new version 1.2 have push support, but them the iTunes Store description is differ and none information about push notification.

    Comment by Paul — July 21, 2009 #

  66. Thanks for the update sarah!. I really like version 1.2 so far. I like the buzz feature. Yes, Push is broken but other than that its great. Thanks for the hard work and hopefully we will have push soon.
