We’re retiring versions 6.0 to 7.5
June 9, 2009 on 9:40 am | In News | 163 Comments
As Yahoo! Messenger gets older so too do some of the “vintage” versions that are still in use by some users.
In an effort to provide the best experience for our users and maintain high security standards, we will officially retire Yahoo! Messenger versions 6.0 through 7.5 in August, 2009. This means that if you are currently using a version of Yahoo! Messenger that is below 8.0, you will no longer be able to sign in and use it after the retirement date in August.
If you are one of these users, you’ll begin seeing messages in-product about the upcoming retirement. You have several options for continuing to use Yahoo! Messenger:
Option 1: Download the latest version for Windows
You can use Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 which offers enhanced security as well as better protection from spam (info | video demo | download). It was even voted the best overall client in the 2009 About.com IM Awards. 9.0 also includes more advanced features like voice calling, free mobile text messaging (SMS), as well as the ability to IM with friends that use Windows Live™ Messenger.
Option 2: Use Yahoo! Messenger for the Web
If you can’t use the latest version mentioned above, you can always sign in to Yahoo! Messenger for the Web from any web browser. No extra download or installation is required. With our web version, you can send IM’s as well as SMS text messages to your friend’s mobile phones for free. Our web version also includes anywhere archiving, allowing you to access your message history from any computer or browser. Try it now at http://webmessenger.yahoo.com.
Option 3: Use the built-in IM feature in Yahoo! Mail
Both versions of Yahoo! Mail offer a built-in feature that lets you send and receive IMs. If you’re using the all-new Yahoo! Mail, just click the status menu next to your name in the upper header and change your status to “Available”. This will sign you into Yahoo! Messenger (you also have the option of staying invisible). IM conversations occur in separate tabs within your Mail page.
In Yahoo! Mail Classic, you’ll see a module on the left hand side of the page labeled “Chat & Mobile Text”. Click on the status menu in that module to change to “Available” (or Invisible). IM conversations will show up in a small box in the lower right corner of your Yahoo! Mail Classic page (but it won’t interfere with your Mail messages or using Mail).
As an alternative, there are also solutions available for your mobile phone. We recently launched Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone and additionals versions are available for other mobile handsets. Find out more
And remember, no matter what version you migrate to, your contact list always goes with you. As the date gets closer, we’ll remind you again here on the blog and provide the final date for retirement.
Thanks,
Sarah Bacon

Stupid, stupid, stupid. I can’t get any of the newer versions to work on Vista.
That’s it. I’m switching. Pidgin or Instantbird or something else other than that load of crap which is YIM.

@Aimee – Have you contacted Yahoo! support about your problem?
@Mans – Please learn more about the software industry, specifically about product life cycles, before criticizing this positive decision by the Yahoo! Messenger team.

Well guess you kids didn’t do your homework. Unless it was to make me upgrade to a new computer, which will not happen. So now that I cannot see my e-mail or use YIM guess I don’t need Yahoo any more.
I was on my YIM just two days ago and now all my contacts are gone and my e-mail does not show up because I can not upgrade my computer to the latest thing.
If it doesn’t work on what I have I must go elsewhere with all my e-mail and IM needs. Yahoo, Yahoo is dead or at least run by stupid kids that don’t know how to make things work.

It’s about time YMSG12 through YMSG14 bit the dust.

The way our router is set up for our offices, it will not let the newer versions of yahoo work on our system because of the security issues with video and voice chat. If there was a way to turn that part off we wouldn’t have an issue.
So, I guess since we can get 9 to work in our offices and 6 & 7 are going to retired.
Then I guess our reps, trainer and support staff are nationwide and international will have to go somewhere else.
Comment by Not a Happy Company — June 9, 2009 #
sorry, I meant can’t get 9 to work.
Comment by Not a Happy Company — June 9, 2009 #
That’s not good. I can’t access Yahoo! Mail, Answers or anything from my other computer (the only computer I use messenger on) so I can’t use those features. The older versions of Yahoo! Messenger don’t work on my computer.
I guess I’m screwed. I’ll have to go find a messenger that actaully works since Yahoo! decided to be jerky.

In other words to ram more ads down your throat you have to upgrade, but dont worry, they have ad blockers out there if you search

Can someone please tell me where I can get the older (8.x) version?
Comment by noworkie — June 9, 2009 #
@Not a Happy Company:
No offense, but whoever was responsible for that decision has some seriously flawed logic. The audio conferencing and webcam vulnerabilities are patched in the new versions (if I’m not mistaken 8.1.0.416 and newer)… The old versions are the ones that are vulnerable!

YIM team: You seem to have fixed a lot of things that were not broken. On the other hand, I still cannot do basic things like search through message archive.
Pressing on a group name used to expand/collapse the group. Now it tries to send an IM to everybody in the group. Really? Was that based on usage data, or did some product manager just make it up?
What was wrong with old message formatting? Again – did you choose the new one based on some data or did some PM/exec make it up?
Comment by noworkie — June 9, 2009 #
One day I have Yahoo IM and the next ….POOF! its gone. For a few friends thats the only way I keep in contact. Gonna miss ‘em…gonna miss ‘em ALOT. Some of us can’t afford to upgrade computers so we rely on old ones to get us thru. I’ll gladly upgrade to the new Yahoo messenger version if you’ll buy me a new computer. Is it a deal?
Comment by Annie — June 9, 2009 #
Does this decision affect older versions of third party clients?
If not, then I should not be getting a nag message every time I connect.
If so, then I will be boycotting Yahoo due to their decision to make it impossible for people who have older computers they cannot afford to replace to use their service.

i have an ‘old pc’ running xp home (2600) sp2
and newest messenger 9.0 (2160) and it works wonderfully..
great work guys.. it stands out for me vs msn live, irq6.5, and aim ( i used all of those too) in stuff to do in instant messeges. plugins & more..
Comment by KT — June 9, 2009 #
You should retire version 8 and 9 beta too. Because version 8 it is older (3-4 years) and 9 beta is beta. You should let the older version that you can sign in the version: 9.0.0.1912. That things that …yahoo mess 9 doesn’t work on older pc it’s true but people should make an upgrade..we are in 2009 not in 2001.And the thing that yahoo mess 9 doesn’t work on XP ,Vista or 7 it isn’t true .I have 3 pc with that windows and it’s work smoothly on each one with the latest version now(9.0.0.2162).
Comment by TheAwfulDud3 — June 9, 2009 #
Dear Sarah,
I understand the fact that Yahoo is moving on and retiring the versions as stated in your post.
I remember not so long ago that you posted something about “Retro” Yahoo gadgets or something, for us Retro fanatic I think we should have a version called YM Classic same as the Yahoo Mail Classic. What do you think?
I like YM 9 but I also prefer a YM with less features to it but for using PMs only and SMS and I also understand theres Webmessenger, Chat through our Mails or Mobile Mode messenger but its not the same as the Yahoo Messenger itself.
Please Sarah I know you have a big influence to Yahoo Inc but dont shut us out of the Classic Yahoo Messenger.
Thanks.
Yours sincerely,
Dave

You guys just don’t get it. Version 7.0 was fine. If additional security codes must be written that’s fine, but why should those codes change the basic functions? You are inserting ads at the bottom of chat windows where it used to say “Joe is typing” with local ads designed for me to say to myself I should go buy a car? Give me a break, please. I hate other Messengers out there, but soon Yahoo will be an old favorite of mine instead of my everyday chat client. Now, put that in your pipes and smoke it.

Great, yesterday we had a couple clients within our company get the popup warning about needing to upgrade to the current version before August 15th. Today none of the clients are even able to login to the service. They get the popup and hit close and it just ends up looping over and over opening the warning message without allowing them to login.
So by needing to upgrade by August 15th did you mean June 10th?
We run all our IM traffic through Symantec IMManager as we are on a corporate network. As of right now I have multiple traders down. Thankfully we can force them over to Pidgin which is still working. Guess we will just have to now mandage pidgin as a resource instead of giving them the choice of Yahoo.
Comment by Casey — June 10, 2009 #
@weallone – If you cannot access your Yahoo! Mail from your PC, you may have far more serious issues than needing to upgrade your Yahoo! Messenger software.
You would only need to upgrade your PC to new hardware or operating system if you aren’t running Windows 2000, Windows XP, or Windows Vista.
Also, please re-read what Ms. Bacon said about the change-over date. Their systems have not switch off access to the older versions yet. Either you are completely making up what you’re saying about not being able to access things, or you have a very serious issue with your PC possibly caused by one or more viruses.

@Not A Happy Company – Yahoo! Messenger is not intended to be a business communications tool. It is targetted at consumers. If you truly have an international business with an IT staff capable of blocking various versions of the YMSG protocol, you should be using an enterprise messaging platform such of Microsoft Office Live Communications Server or Jabber.

All this fuss and all that effort to impliment “new” chat versions and no evidence of any effort whatever to block porn bots, cloners, booters and room flooders. Why not fix OLD problems before introducing anything new. Leave well enough alone!

Stability before features is what I say.
Yahoo is closely tied to Micro$oft. Seriously what can you expect. Hehehee.
Comment by Aimee — June 11, 2009 #
@Mans – Again I task you with learning about product life cycles as related to software development. I am a software developer. Supporting versions of my product from many years ago would be untenable to management. Yahoo! Inc. is a business that is beholden to its shareholders. Pouring money into bug fixing and development of five year old products that don’t suppor the new advertising methods and are used by an incredibly small minority of users is not good business sense.
Comment by Fake Al Gore — June 11, 2009 #
What a totally dumb decision that is. This move will definately lose the remnants of the community that helped you build up messenger in the first place.
Many of the “old regs” are still using older version as there is a modicum of protection to be had from programs such as Ytunnel! etc. Also these older version are more stable than the newer versions too.
When I can no longer log in with my version, I guess I wont be getting the new version with all its problems as I dont believe Yahoo or more specifically Sarah Bacon has any intention on sorting out the chat room fiasco any time soon.
Its worse than a roach infestation with all the bots in there, and the booters have taken ownership of the rooms away from Yahoo!. For this pleasure I am still required to type in a dumb code which is supposed to prevent their access NOT mine.
Ever since this blog opened we have been begging yahoo for action in the chat rooms, and have had our posts removed. News business will not sustain Yahoo, and they should realise this and try to keep hold of the existing customer base to ensure trust and repeat business.
Comment by easy — June 11, 2009 #
Was about time to remove that old versions.
Finally MUD servers won’t be available anymore for use by bots that scan who is invisible on YM and they will have it harder with the other servers.
Comment by ovidiu — June 11, 2009 #
This will probably lessen headaches on compatibility, I’m all for it. Thumbs up, Y! team.
To those who think this is gonna solve the bot problem, someone will eventually figure out the new protocols, and the problem will return again. It’s a neverending cat-and-mouse game here.

Most of you said that yahoo is like microsoft for forcing users to use newer versions like yahoo messenger 9 . I think this is a good thing.
@easy :”Man you need to upgrade your pc if yahoo mess 9 doesn’t work weel on your pc , and i think 9 version it is more stable than the older not otherwise .You and others say about ym 9 like others said about Windows Vista .Most of you have to upgrade to newer tehnology and use newer software not software realeased 6-7 years ago.”
Comment by Daniel — June 12, 2009 #
last time i checked its 2009 not 2001 for anyone who try to claim “i cant afford to upgrade” you can build a pc for under 200 dollars these days windows 98 is dead windows xp will soon totally be done you really have no valid excuse to complain.. using yahoo as a customer support system i wouldnt recommend you could spend 5 bucks and get flash chat which has the live support feature available…. yahoo retiring the older builds is no different from msn camfrog and others doing the same thing…. or else you still have people running 5.6 ffs besides when you have diff versions of messenger it can interfere with webcams ( which btw yahoo needs to fix them drastically i mean really 1-2 fps? are you for rea?)
other im clients like msn camfrog have way better video… i mean retiring the old is good but you have along way to go before you are in that kind of league and what good does captcha do when it doesnt keep the bots out?
Comment by doug — June 12, 2009 #
This is discrimination! What about the ppl who use old pc’s and can’t install windows xp because their pc can’t handle it. You discriminate poor ppl from rich ppl, poor countries who can’t afford a new pc from rich countries. Remember Yahoo!, there are ppl living outside the US, where believe it or not, they still use old pc’s with windows 98 for basic stuff.
Comment by Gaby — June 12, 2009 #
I’d like to see on the next update version a option to unmask the password on messengers sign in. Using messenger only at home I have no need for my password to be masked and this will help some of us with long passwords to ensure that it was typed correctly.

$200 is a lot of money if you don’t have it. Two cents is a lot of money if you don’t have it. It doesn’t matter how much more it is than people can have, only that it’s more than they have.
All this is going to do is make people go use AIM instead, given *they* seem to have *no* problems supporting older versions…or at least not actively disabling them.
I’m migrating all my contacts to AIM and encouraging people to leave YIM. Is this really what you want? Oh wait, if somebody can’t afford to upgrade, they can’t afford to buy from your advertisers, so they don’t exist, right?
Comment by glorygardner — June 12, 2009 #

Comment by Cliff — June 12, 2009 #
The REASON that I have a version that is apparently scheduled for extinction is that I could not sign in due to a KNOWN ERROR on the new version. Technical support was unable to satisfactorally resolve the problem. Uninstalling the new and installing an old version did the trick.
Comment by Randall — June 12, 2009 #
Will this affect those of use using GAIM on Red Hat Enterprise Linux? The unix version in no longer pointed to on the site, but is still up if you search for it. However, it is likely even older than Gaim.
Guess if they kick me off, Ill switch to AIM as well. Since NONE of the versions will work on my system, not even the WEB one, guess Ill be a new AIM user soon, unless the PIDGIN or GAIM version works. MS windows is barred here, so notne of the current versions are options for those not on MS windows..
Also, I will remember the adverts I see on Y! and not ever buy from them again if this happens….

A year ago my friend came and used my laptop and ran a “portable version” of yahoo messenger. A yahoo messenger was already running, when he ran that portable version the other yahoo messenger instantly quit. After that I couldn’t open yahoo messenger anymore. When I click on yahoo messenger, nothing happens anymore. The problem was solved by installing version 7.0
I’ve tried installing newer version, but any version above 7.0 won’t work. I was able to sign in to version 9.0 but after 3 second being signed in, yahoo messenger just freezes (not responding). I switched back to version 7.0 while occasionally tried upgrading to 9.0 again to no avail.
I love yahoo messenger… I found that the file transfer on yahoo is faster compared to other messengers. But if I can no longer use 7.0 then be it… I just hope that Yahoo realizes that some people stick to older version is because that’s what works for them.
Thanks.
Comment by jostemori — June 13, 2009 #
What does the Yahoo team get from doing this? All I can see is them loosing a huge portion of their users. I don’t know anybody who uses Yahoo 9.0. I’ve tried it, and it gives me the worst migraine imaginable. Not only that, but the Not Responding message comes up if I try to even send a file or use photoshare. I just don’t fancy the thing. Why can’t Yahoo users choose to stick with an older version? I don’t see the problem…

why not patch an old version for the new login, is much more simple then to loose a lot of users.

Yahoo should refocus itself on the development of a Windows Presentation Foundation based messenger like Yahoo IM for Vista. It is true…we are heading into 2010 and Windows 7 will be out in October. Enough of this old Yahoo Crap. I think the biggest mistake Yahoo made was getting rid of Yahoo Messenger for Vista! Perhaps a WPF build that does not include the operating system name! C’mon Yahoo! Show us what your made of!
Comment by BlueAmbience — June 14, 2009 #
This is truly a bad decision, yahoo. I find the older versions to work better then the new versions out there. I really hope you all reconsider. I’m running on 8.0 and I dislike it a lot. 9.0 is too buggy. 7.0 is best messenger out there in my opinion. All it needs is support to it.
Comment by girlnotgrey — June 15, 2009 #
Also, I’ve noticed Yahoo! Messenger is pretty RAM-hungry, at least compared to Pidgin. While Pidgin takes 9,244 K, YIM takes 21,284 K. (Both are signed out, just to make it equal). Yikes!
Also, Yahoo isn’t gonna listen to us. So you might as well use Pidgin (with older GTK libraries) or use another instant messenger.
Comment by Aimee — June 15, 2009 #
This is really awful, since I can no longer connect via 3rd party clients (e.g. Pidgin, Proteus, Adium) I will cease to use Yahoo IM. Yet another mind blowing mistake from Yahoo.
Comment by Mike — June 15, 2009 #
Good, at least the whining users won’t be around. If you’re having issues with Yahoo! Messenger then please do one of the following; a) reformat your PC, b) make sure a firewall or router isn’t blocking access, c) use the latest Yahoo! Messenger build and finally d) use a third party client. Yahoo! Messenger 9 works fine for me, so I don’t know what in the world it could be causing issues for you all.
Get with the times people. Use Windows XP, Vista or 7 with Yahoo! Messenger and not ancient hardware. Who cares about memory usage, PCs typically have more than enough these days.
Why waste your time nitpicking?

True, getting a newer operating system doesn’t cost that much — if you don’t pay for it. What’d you do? Copy a friend’s disc, or d/l them from a newsgroup or a torrent?

@ SoftwareGuy, time to get a new computer or some new hardware if you expect to keep with the times or else future releases of the client won’t support you anymore.
Vendors can’t keep supporting Windows 95, 98, ME, 2K, XP and older hardware forever you know and I’m glad they don’t.

Is there a problem with Messenger? I’ve not been able to log on for an hour now. It was fine this morning. Help!
Comment by Taffythree — June 18, 2009 #
To Cliff-I don’t think it really asks you about installing the Yahoo Toolbar or setting the Homepage. I did the upgrade on my laptop the other day, and I read all the boxes that come up. By default the the settings will go to default irregaurdless of your settings before (Which, is stupid in my mind ’cause it just uninstalls previous versions and installs the new version). So, that would cause it to auto connect on start up, start up with Windows, show the Yahoo Insider.
Now, for my little 2 pennies about this blog.
Not really smart on Yahoo behalf. What they could do is make a little update that goes in with the older versions of the YM to connect to the newer servers. Something like what Micro—hell—does, they still provide updates for 9x and ME, but you can only go so far. You can get all the updates up to the point that they stopped supporting it. Can’t be that hard to make a little script that would be put in the older version to redirct to the new servers.
Yes, using a 3rd party app was an option, BUT! Like me, I am unnable to connect. I run Ubuntu 9.04 Linux, and I was able to use Pidgin until this morning. So, a 3rd party app is out of the option until they get updated. For what I’m doin’ now to talk to my friends on YM is running a Virtual Machine.
I think that it was a bad decision to make the theme so graphically intense. They should have just stuck with the basic theme that matches the Windows theme. Last version of YM I used before 9 was 7. When I started using 9, I saw new things and somethings went missing.
So, what I think about this, good idea for the fact that the company would be saving money, bad idea for the people that they have. They are siding with Mico– in basically forcing people to buy newer versions of Windows. If you have a machine that came with Windows 98SE, you CAN run XP without a problem. Might be a tad slow, but you can do it. All you have to do is disable the visual themes and use the classic view. You may have to do a small upgrade, but that can be done cheap.
Sorry for taking so much space and digressing a bit. Heh.

I run ubuntu 8.10 i have used yahoo forums for years but decided to try yahoo mesenger because thats all one of my friends can use on her phone — i installed it on a virtual machine under windows — then later i discovered i could use it directly from pigeon and have been doing so for a couple of months –today it would not log in no matter what i tried – i even booted into an older kernal — i went to xp and it worked fine — i came back to ubuntu and down loaded a few more clients it would not log in with any of them — i then downloaded the latest version of yahoo 9 and installed it under wine — surprise- suprise — it did not work either — i went back to xp and no problems — even the new version instaled and would work — i used the same instaler i down loaded in ubuntu — now is it just me or has yahoo made it so linux people cant use it any more ?

Real great guys, seems that PIdgin doesn’t even work for me anymore, and I’m guessing its cause of this…and since I am on linux I am surely not going to sit and stare at a ugly looking web interface instead of having a program that will run, and I am certainly not going to get Windows just so I can run Yahoo…what were you people thinking?

How you are implementing the protocol upgrade makes absolutely no sense to me. I use thrid party clients to connect (much easier having a single light weight app than multiple heavy weight apps for each client) and like others have said pidgin stopped working. Right now I am able to force it to use the ip of a server that has not been upgraded yet, but I dont know how long this will last.
The thing that makes absolutely nosense is the breaking of backwards compatibility to a protocol that is widely used (at least for us pidgin users) but even older protocol versions still authenticate to what appear to be upgraded servers. I have heard comments of old versions of gaim still connecting, and I can verify that an old version of trillian still connects. When I was researching to see what was going on I took packet dumps of the authentication process. On a server that doesnt work with my version of pidgin (using ymsg version 15) my trillian client connects successfully (using ymsg version 12).
In this upgrade why are you crippling only selected versions of the protocol? Is this to attack the large user base using pidgin 2.5.x specifically? Because other than that I cannot see any reason for breaking the authentication protocol in ymsg version 15, but still allowing (at least from reports ive read) versions 14 and below (not sure how low it goes).
What is the real reasoning behind breaking compatibility only to a specific version of the protocol when keeping compatibility for more legacy versions?

Ian,
If every program assumed a lot of memory, you run into problems very quickly. Programs need to be good citizens on the computer they’re installed on.
Comment by Rob — June 19, 2009 #
I work from home, and my coworkers and I depend on IM to communicate with each other throughout the day.
Several of us use Pidgin, because it allows us to communicate with people on several different IM platforms, including Yahoo, Google, and Skype, without the hassle of having multiple IM clients open on my computer.
And then, suddenly, Yahoo kills the connection for Pidgin!!!
But this decision is not going to force people like me and my colleagues to use Yahoo Messenger 9. Instead, we’ll just switch to another IM protocol– Like Google, for example, because they DO play nicely with Pidgin.

It appears to me that at one time Yahoo was actually maintained and run by actual people. Yes, human beings. However, as time has passed and Yahoo has grown, it seems that the servers have taken over. You send a message to customer care (so they call it because it sounds nice, I guess) and you immediately get an auto response from an email server telling you how important you are to them. A few days later you get a canned response that redirects you back to a Yahoo help page that you have already tried a thousand times with no results. Finally, after standing before the bathroom mirror with a razor blade to your wrist because you can’t sign on to Yahoo you receive another email from Yahoo customer care telling you to Upgrade with no other suggestions. Don’t even try to call Yahoo on the telephone, there is no one there that can actually speak to you. Perhaps as time goes on they will produce a computer (Like on Sarah Connor Chronicals, I think) that actually “LEARNS’ on its own. Oops, I think they are almost there, now they just need to tap into a HUMAN interface to communicate with the HUMANS that use their service. Face it people, if we are old, we will simply be discontinued. Progress, progress, progress!!!!

Best experience?!?!?
You guys want to provide us the best experience? Don’t retire it.
The truth is that you guys want to cut out all the non-Yahoo messenger apps out there.
If instead of using those cheap tricks, try to understand why people are going away from Yahoo instead. Start doing a better job. Start thinking of your customers and not to yourself.
Comment by zanzaricchio — June 19, 2009 #
Retire it. There’s no need to keep legacy versions around. Hell, get rid of 8.x while you’re at it and keep everyone on the newest version. Why keep old protocols around that aren’t even needed anymore? Third party clients will have to update to adapt to these changes as they come, so cry to them about it. Hell it’s against the terms of services for using any other client other than the official client anyways so it is a waste of time and breath to complain about Pidgin and Trillian and who knows what else isn’t working. It’s not Yahoo’s concern to keep those third party clients working nor do they have to keep older versions from logging in it isn’t a smart business move to keep the old versions working!
Comment by Ian — June 19, 2009 #
To elaborate a little more on what I mean about older versions is that it is a security risk to leave older protocols from existing after a certain period of time.
Comment by Ian — June 19, 2009 #
Why is this protocol change happening now when the announcement is for August 2009?
I’m probably pretty much done with yahoo anyway. I have one contact left who still uses yahoo occasionally. I’ll just tell that person to use google chat.

Yahoo have taken a bold decision, by blocking version 7 ! i think yahoo`s messenger 8 and 9 version is super flop. So Yahoo is forcing people to use 9 or 8. I will use MSN messenger if i cant use YM 7. But i wont use YM 8 or 9. Yahoo messenger is a substitute product not a compulsory ! This kind of enforcement by Yahoo doesn’t make any sense !

1.Yahoo made a good decision to retire older version ( ver. 8 will be soon retired too).
2.People who have Vista doesn’t have a slower system because Vista will run like sh*t on their pc.
3.If you have a pc with Windows 2000 ,98 or older windows ,you should buy a new pc which will run very well Windows Vista in order to run well the Y! Messenger 9.
4.Any software product has his time. The time of Y! Mess 6 and 7 will expire on 15 August 2009. And will be folowed soon by Y! Mess 8.
And now for people from US: Don’t complain too much about slower systems because my country is very poor and a lot of people has a very good computer in the worse case with Win Xp. You cant say that US Citizens dont have money to buy a new pc which will run Win Vista and Y! Mess 9 well.

Really should retire Messenger v8.0 too while you’re at it and leave the choices at v8.1 and v9.0 but that would be infeasible since you’d have to drop YMSG15 too.
Yahoo made a really good decision to retire older versions although I wish they’d do this sort of thing sooner since there’s users out there that abuse the older protocol for malicious purposes. Just get with the times people and throw away the dinosaur PCs and use the latest thing. If for some reason you’re unable to use the newer versions then it is a problem on YOUR side, not Yahoo’s.
Yahoo, please pay attention to the security of your own protocols. ALL of them have vulnerabilities that malicious users can use against other users.

When it upgraded from 8 to 9, it did not give me this option. I always look. If it DID give me the option, it HIDE IT WELL, since I KNOW yahoo is f’ing sneaking like this, so I was looking out for it.
When I update 8 to 9 at my work, I’ll confirm that this is the case, or explain how I missed it if I was wrong. Either way YAHOO IS AT FAULT, since they either dont give the option, or hide it. EITHER WAY, they shouldn’t have it as default.

Use Pidgin. They’ve fixed the bug in 2.5.7.
Better yet, DON’T use Yahoo.
Use GMail. GMail is 1000x better than Yahoo.
Also, the protocol there is standardized (XMPP).
No need to worry about changes.

Hahaha. Plenty of posts makes me laugh. Upgrades (or so called progress) is only good if it makes the users happy, I say “USERS” which means all of them users. Progress is a positive word and should make people happy, otherwise it is a regress. For this situation YIM seems to regress instead of progress. Introducing more problems, whatever that is, is not fun to anyone, not to mention that it will makes them blind to the “good stuff” that where added. The worst problem I read is that it fails to function anymore, making users unable to use the service.
People who say to solve the problem is to buy new PC or such is naive or purely dumb. They assume too much. They assume that everyone would be able to do that (buy new PC or OS and such). You must learn that this is a big wide world. There are reasons that many won’t do that. Some due to money matters, some because they like to keep the old ones, some just prefer the old to the new. Nothing is wrong with their decisions. And you are unable to do anything against it. They are your costumers after all, they decide what they are going to do.
Anyone who says that retiring the old version is good is forgetting something. This is a messaging software! It means that a lot of people are using it and it also means that there are a lot of old versions out there. Retiring the old versions and making them unusable without making the old-version-users happy with the new version is asking for a heap of trouble. Well some might say its okey, some might think it won’t affect them, but what if those unhappy costumers are your chat mates and friends? Would you like to be unable to connect to them?
Some says the newer versions have much more security so join the flow. Not everyone would agree to that, that is full of nonsense. First, not long from now that security would be breached, and there we go again. Second, as just said, not anyone is able to afford to get the newer versions, so even if they like to go with the flow they just can’t. They would just have to go to other directions. Third, not everyone likes where the flow is going and there is nothing to stop them from going to other directions.
I do agree that upgrades to improve utility is good, but as I could see it is not the case. In fact it almost make it unusable to many.
If you just keep ignoring others who are unable to follow, then it shows how merciless you are.
This upgrade, or whatever it is, is not good at all. Upgrades are meant to improve costumer experience. Alienating costumers is against all business sense there is. Unless Y! are able to make their users happy with this upgrade, they had to suffer the loss.

Here’s the problem with v9 folks. Part of the conditions of running the thing is that it will download and install programs without your knowledge or consent. Anyone who knows anything about security knows how stupid and dangerous this is. The clown that uses this to get their own code into machines all over the world is going to have the mother of all botnets. You think Conficker was bad? Just wait. It’s complete b.s. period.
I have a Powerbook G4 running OS X 10.3.9 and I have no means or intentions of upgrading to 10.4 or 10.5… this means I can’t upgrade YIM either.
Thanks to this garbage, I can no longer use Yahoo Messenger.
Way to cut out a sizable portion of your user-base.
In the middle of a recession, when people have less expendable income to shell out on upgrading their OS or computer, you switch to versions which require more RAM and the latest OS… brilliant. No wonder nobody uses Yahoo for anything other than IMing anymore.
Comment by alec — August 15, 2009 #
So what is everyone who still runs Windows 98 SE suppose to do. Yahoo keeps ignoring its customers… it is no wonder so many people switching to Google. First you guys mess up your search engine, then drop everyones profiles for a really dumb profile system, change mail so it crashes in Firefox, and now you are dropping everyone with an older computer from im. There are many many people out there still running old computers as netbooks. What is wrong with you people. There needs to be a major in house cleaning at yahoo.
Comment by Eric — August 25, 2009 #
Well, obviously yahoo doesn’t appear to care what others think, b/c if they did, they would ask the people what they wanted, instead of assuming. While I do still use a older version of messenger(8.0), I will continue to use that, until I have no other choice but to use 9.0 or even 10.0. I really do hope though that yahoo does reconsider their choices to discontinue older versions of messenger, and brings them back. Only time will tell.

For those of you who (like me) can’t afford to drop a grand on a new computer system, but still want to use YIM, here’s how:
Try to log in to YIM. It’ll just sit there being retarded. WHILE it’s just sitting there, log into the web-based messenger. After a few minutes, you’ll log into YIM, and get booted from the web-based messenger. Close your browser, and continue using YIM.
See? It still works.
Yahoo, you’re a total bitch for doing this. Not offering support for users of older versions is one thing, but cutting them off completely like this? It’s inexcusable, and 100% motivated by greed.

Thanks for your strategies. One thing we have noticed is that banks along with financial institutions are aware of the spending habits of consumers as well as understand that most people max out and about their real credit cards around the trips. They properly take advantage of that fact and commence flooding your inbox as well as snail-mail box by using hundreds of no interest APR credit cards offers shortly after the holiday season concludes. Knowing that if you’re like 98% of American community, you’ll rush at the chance to consolidate consumer credit card debt and move balances for 0 APR credit cards.

I leave a response when I enjoy reading an article on a website or if I have got something of worth to add with regard to the debate. And on this great article I was essentially moved enough to leave a comment
I possess a couple of questions for you if it’s allright?. Could it be simply me or do some of these comments come across as coming from brain dead folks?
And, if you are posting on additional sites, I would like to keep up with anything fresh you have to post. Could you list every one of your community pages like your Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile? Thanks!
