Upgrade notice for Windows users
April 14, 2009 on 11:30 am | In 9.0 version | 71 Comments
In the coming weeks, our Yahoo! Messenger 8.x and 9.0 Beta users (Windows) will see a notice when they’re signed in about upgrading to the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 (9.0.0.2152).
When you see the Yahoo! Messenger Update window, click the Update Now button to begin installation. It only takes a couple of minutes and you will not need to restart your computer after it’s complete.
Not sure what version of Yahoo! Messenger you have? To find out, go to the Help menu and select “About Yahoo! Messenger”. If your version is below 9.0.0.2152 you can always visit our website to upgrade to the latest version on your own. Similarly, you can check anytime to see if you have the latest version by going to Help and selecting “Check for Updates”.
Why upgrade? 9.0 offers some new features that are not available in earlier versions such as enhanced security and anti-spam tools, inline media players for photos and video, new “detailed” contact list option with larger display images, support for Pingbox, many new skins, and more. To see 9.0 in action, check out the demo video.

From yesterday my updates have stopped being displayed on Yahoo Messenger main window.
I will install this update now, maybe it will solve the problem.

What about the notice to update to Messenger for Vista?
Oh yeah. The superior version got cancelled so that the turd that is 9 could get pinched off.
Sorry, I can’t run this release. It’s too crap. 8 doesn’t randomly disable my window animations and do God knows what else without me knowing.
Comment by The Jimmy James — April 14, 2009 #
How about adding a What’s New page somewhere (visible) for minor version changes?
Comment by Odyn — April 14, 2009 #
Heh… STILL no search function for my archive
Comment by Odyn — April 14, 2009 #
Yeah, I just downloaded the new version of messanger for Windows Vista and for some reason it isn’t responding. I have repeatedly deleted and reinstalled this hardware and still nothing. It doesn’t even show up as existing on my computer. So, I don’t know if it’s just because I have Vista or what but so far it has only been a pain.
Comment by Mathew — April 14, 2009 #
no thanks.
I sticking with 8.
Comment by yolarrydabomb — April 15, 2009 #
no thank you! give us back the YM for Vista. That was the only reason that made me stick with yahoo. YM 9 is an old crap that everybody hates!

Sarah, I am behind a firewall that uses an automatic connection configuration script and not a proxy server. I am still getting the 81003004 error when logging in. YM 8 worked fine. Ideas?
Comment by Joel Chadwick — April 15, 2009 #
I second the request for the functionality to search message archives.
Also, it would be amazing if Yahoo could log conversations to your @yahoo email account like Gmail does, rather than log them locally. I have messenger on my desktop, laptop and now iPhone. You can see the advantage of having messenger archive the messages on Yahoo’s server.

Comment by bamz — April 15, 2009 #
when will yahoo messenger archive have a search feature?
another feature that would be useful is to upload the archive to yahoo’s servers so we can search in it there.
please implement such features.

I hope in the next months to see a beta release of Yahoo Messenger 10 (to be the continuation of Yahoo Messenger for Vista and 9) and a newer version of Yahoo Messenger 9 (which will have the good features of YMess 8 which lack from YMess 9) and signin in from a version older than 9 stopped.
Comment by Jayzz — April 16, 2009 #
When I log onto yahoo messenger 9.0, my machine begins to hang. The messenger takes up alot of the system resources which the lower versions were not doing. The features seem better but I don’t like the hanging. Do something

I am using Vista Home Premium for a few weeks, and found out that my YM 9.0 has been experiencing considerable lag after 30 mins chatting… Any idea of why and how to fix that? I am using a HP dv4 laptop, so hardware is ruled out. My concern is the condition of YM and Vista, they seems not very compatible…
thanks for any idea…

When i open a chat window in yahoo messenger (i upgraded to v9) I can see what’s on the page behind that window inside the chat window. Then when I try to send a message it locks. When i click send I can’t see the message I sent. When I close the chat window, I get an error that Yahoo Messenger has encountered an error and needs to close.

“Friend typing notification” is still not as accurate with the YM! 9.0.0.2152 as it was before you change its localization.
When you change a functionality in your messenger, please check that it is working as good as it was previously!

Comment by Joe User — April 17, 2009 #
Yahoo! Messenger works fine on 64-bit and everyone should be using Y!M 9, good work team.
Now, can I ask what in the world is with the easy chat bans going around right now? I post links to YouTube, Google and even Yahoo websites it logs me out of chat and keeps me out for at least 8 hours. And if that’s not bad enough, IDs are getting logged out of chat/chat banned for posting an emoticon (only an emoticon) in a message.
So what’s going on with the hair trigger filtering? Seems to me everything’s screwed up right now.

The SMS service from a pc to cell phone is not working and has not been working..I am able to recieve messages from a cell phone to my pc, and cannot respond. Is anyone else having this problem, is there a fix for this or is it another glitch in the new system they are running? Someone please help, there has to be a fix for this problem.
Comment by Michael Weygandt — April 18, 2009 #
I find it very annoying that these messages: “…is typing a message” and “Last message received on…” appear in the message area, right in the place where you’re supposed to see the actual message from your chat buddy, instead of appearing in the tiny space below the box where you type your text, like it was in the previous versions.
Comment by Freaky — April 19, 2009 #
Yea I cannt use the sms too
Is anybody also having problems using the YMvoice- phone out -( pc to phone ) ?
wow its a pain …. always baaa-ad connection Indiscreminate charges for unsuccesful calls
What is this?
Yahoo ! Voice -take this servce away from that third party Jajah they are not helping either

I gotta say, I already have 9.0 and am quite impressed with it. Aside from the missing classic look, it’s quite handy if you use Pingbox alot.

Do not remove “…is typing a message” and “Last message received on…” appear in the message area like many users say. I like this new tipe of announcing. The old tipe like in yahoo 8 is not so cool. I want you to remove signing in from yahoo mess 9(beta) ,8,7,6 in the future( next months) .
Comment by Kalos — April 21, 2009 #
Kalos: I really don’t care where the “is typing message” appears!
But I would be VERY pleased that it works as it was working before!!
Check how it behaves now! I have post many messages in different post to explain what is going on with this notification. Yahoo staff has changed more than its localization! They have made it less accurate than before! It doesn’t really show when your friend is typing. When it starts, it’s OK but in any cases it will disappear after about 7 sec, even if your friend is still typing a long message.
This was not the case before! Check and compare with the one on yahoo messenger for the web!
Comment by poupart — April 21, 2009 #
It really is outrageous that we’re FORCED to install every BLOATED “upgrade” the Yahoo geniuses come up with. Is this one gonna cure ANY of the multiple things we’ve complained about for years? Things that Yahoo has NEGLECTED and 3rd party add-ons and clients (which now seem to be disabled,) have tried to address? Or is it — again — more frills that nobody asked for?
It does not take “minutes to install” on dial up. And what’s with the Web Messenger? Why does it tell me to install Flash 9 when I already have Flash 10???
What good is the “Report as Spam” link in IMs from bots? Why doesn’t that link appear in Conference Invites? (Not that it provides anything more than catharsis for aggravated and harrassed Users.)
SpamGuard is as WORTHLESS as CAPTCHA.
The preceding has been rhetorical, since Ms Bacon rarely responds to anything here.

I have to say ever since I downloaded the new 9.0 my messenger has been crap ever since. I can’t use any picture but my avatar, and I can’t see others pictures. Not only that, I can’t photoshare or send files. This is CRAP, but yet you’re still continuing to forget these types of posts and hook yahoo up with twitter. Get your priorities straight! I want my messenger fixed or I”m not using it anymore.

Bring Back the Old Member Lookup with
interest Groups. Looking for People that
know how to Play the Card Game of
Sheepshead is harder than it should be.
In the Old Version of Member Look-up You
had 992 Members in that Interest Group.
Know Your Lucky if You can find 125 of those
Members. I know You have a few in Yahoo Groups. Because I started a few of them.
WI_Sheepshead_Leagues if You care to check
one of those Groups out.

I still can’t install YMessenger 9 so this notice is useless.
Comment by Preston — April 22, 2009 #
Against my better judgment, I tried this latest monstronsity, because I was getting more frequent errors and LOCK OUTS on V8.
9.0.0.2152 is WORSE than I expected. It didn’t even install correctly. I had to Copy msvcr80.dll and msvcp80.dll from programs that had them to the folders Messy9 expected them to be in.
Classic skin is nowhere to be found, so not only does this bloatware use more of my hard drive, it also uses more of my screen.
I signed on and got PMs and Connection requests from bots. That got worse when I entered a chat room, so I see that indeed, an indispensible add-on has been disabled.
Fortunately, I did I a full system back up before installing this p.o.s., so going back to V8 will be relatively painless. If I’ll continue to be locked out for hours at a time, I’ll get by. It’s not like I’ll be missing anything.
Comment by mal_igned — April 23, 2009 #
Oh yeah, it also had no respect for my V8 Preferences, setting itself up the way Yahoo deemed Messy should be.

This new version is junk! Ever since I downloaded it, I have had problems everyday! Now it won’t let me IM from the home page. I have to go to Messenger add-on to even get to talk. It locks up all the time and dumps me at will. Why didn’t you work out the bugs before releasing this? It keeps telling me I need a new Flashplayer to work now. I have the latest but I tried clicking the notice and it says it downloaded just fine, but no results on Yahoo! Go back to plain Yahoo Classic or fix this mess!

I have old, old compute running windows 98 which will not take the newer upgrades. What happens now, am I just out of luck? I so enjoyed instant messaging but somehow I lost whatever version I had. As I understand it I need version 7.0 or below. Is that correct, and if so, how can I get it back?
Comment by Elbee — April 28, 2009 #
Hi Elbee,
We no longer offer earlier versions of Yahoo! Messenger.
If you’re on an older system that doesn’t support our latest downloadable version, you can instead use Yahoo! Messenger for the Web (http://webmessenger.yahoo.com) or the integrated IM in Yahoo! Mail. These do not require downloads.

Why dont you all just use Windows live Messanger. It just works. It was built by the same people who built most of you guy’s Operating System. Microsoft. Therfore It should work flawlessly. I can tell you now I have not had one single issue with it. The best thing of all, you dont have to keep checking the website to “see” if there are updates. It updates itself. Windows live messanger always advances, in security, GUI, and features. It never takes a step back like yahoo messanger. Stop wasting your time on a problem spree messanger client who’s Development team and customer service is horrible. Do the smart thing and save all of your troubles from the Yahoo Development team and customer service by letting “them” deal with the issues they caused, not you. Switch to windows live messenger. You can even add your freinds who mistakenly use yahoo messanger. You’ll be happy you did.

The way Yahoo treats Messenger users is absolutely outrageous. If there were some improvement, some benefit, other than largely useless bells and whistles in upgrading THEN and only then there might be some justification in making V8 obsolete and unable to connect.
This sucks royally.

@blah – Yes, your message archive will stay intact when you upgrade to a new version. If you want to be extra careful, you can copy/backup the archives folder before you upgrade to a safe location. The archives are located in C:\Program Files\Yahoo!\Messenger\Profiles on your hard drive.
