Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone is here

April 6, 2009 on 9:02 pm | In iphone, Mobile, News | 118 Comments

It’s finally arrived – the all new Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone application.

Now you can take the best of Yahoo! Messenger with you and stay in touch with friends through your iPhone or iPod Touch, no matter where you are.

A short demo video is included below. Here are the top features of the new app:

Instant message: Send text messages back and forth with your friends, including emoticons and web links.

Photo sharing: Take a photo on your iPhone and send that, or grab one from your photo gallery to share.

Stealth settings: Sign in as invisible, or change your status to invisible once you’re in the app.

Custom status message: Enter a custom status message for your friends to see. You can even include a web link with it.

Recent conversations archive: Under Messages, tap a contact and you’ll see your most recent conversation. You can type in a message from there to start chatting again.

Special idle state: If you have to leave the app for whatever reason, like a call comes in or you click a link in an IM that takes you to Safari, the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app will keep you signed in but change your status to idle. That way you can continue to receive messages and provided you return to the app within ten minutes, pick up where you left off.

Additional settings: Tap the Settings icon to change the sort order of your contact list, or to show or hide offline contacts in your list.

Check out the short video below to see the app in action (click here for a high quality version of the video). Background music in the demo was created by one of our own team members, Felix and his Slimcat Productions (thanks!).

The Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone application is free and can be downloaded through the iTunes App Store or through the App Store on your iPhone or iPod Touch (search for Yahoo! Messenger).

Even if you don’t have an iPhone, Yahoo! Messenger is available for other types of mobile phones including the Blackberry. Visit our mobile site to find out what works with your phone.

To sign out of the app, tap on the Settings icon, then scroll all the way down. Tap the sign out button. Or just close the app. Once it’s been closed for 10 minutes, you’re signed out.

    Comment by BiGGie — April 28, 2009 #

  78. Hi BiGGie,

Yes, what you’re describing is our Sign out to Mobile feature. When you’re in the desktop version, go to the Messenger menu and select “Sign in to mobile phone”. You’ll then be prompted to do a quick setup.

After that, when you sign out to your mobile device, you’ll appear as online to your friends with an “I’m Mobile” status message next to your name. When they IM you, you will receive them as text messages on your phone.

Push works nice, though. Just can’t imagine using it often if it won’t let me sign on to mobile.

    Comment by Matt — July 22, 2009 #

  98. Love the new Push to talk feature. Nice improvement there. The only update I didn’t like was keeping the user signed on for 2 weeks, if they just close the browser instead of signing out. That’s kind of annoying I think. Hopefully that will go away and bring back automatically signing out after 10 minutes. Besides that enjoying the app very much. Thank you!!!

    Comment by Ishi — August 1, 2009 #

  102. A lot of features are available using iPhone. I am hoping to see that all those features will be compatible with other phone manufacturers such as Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, etc. I know that the manufacturers of the mobile devices may have or the same OEM or R&D (Research & Development Team) but the real score is the good service for the customers. I am not limiting to iPhone., other manufacturers like Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, etc as well. Let’s say for example if Apple have made one new software for their iPhone to protect and benefit from the new program that may be available for iPhone why not let their competitors buy the copyrights and get royalty from it. I do not mean by owning the program but at least by making it compatible with different devices. This may be applied to other phone manufacturers like Samsung, etc vice versa. The bottom line of this is for the users to enjoy the phone features. Imagine sending an important file to other mobile device that they may be able to read or use in times of emergency? This can save time, money, and life (sometimes).
For example, one I hate most is the incompatibility of one mobile phone in sending straight the namecard to other type of mobile phone and it requires urgency to send the namecard you lose time since you still need to ask the sender to send the contact number AGAIN that you were asking by sending it thru SMS, both lose money by sending SMS AGAIN and the one who requested for the namecard may lose the opportunity as well. What if it is a matter of life & death?
In other words, before doing great things about the features of the Smartphones nowadays like the iPhone, it would be better if they make the mobile phones compatible with other devices.

  105. Sarah, the application is awesome. My query to you is this: why is Yahoo leaving its paying customers in the dust by providing less than third-rate services: I have a Yahoo Business Account and would love to have an instant Push notification for emails – if you can do it for Yahoo Messenger why is it so difficult to provide the same feature for paying customers? Let me alert you to the ground reality that Yahoo has a terrible reputation amongst business users like myself and it is only a matter of time before all these guys would jump off the Yahoo sinking ship.

  106. When I try to start yahoo messenger on the iphone it does not load 99% of the time. It just goes back the main screen with the app icons.

Then, when it does finally load and when I try to message one of my buddies, it takes up to 5 minutes to load the conversation page. The older version did not do this. It started having these issues with the last update!

There are some serious issues with the yahoo IM on the iPhone.

  108. Was wondering if messages sent and received using the iPhone yahoo messenger app will be counted towards my plan?

    Comment by ikku — September 2, 2009 #

  109. @ikku – Are you referring to SMS messages that you send using the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app? SMS sent from within the app will not count against your SMS plan from your carrier. The SMS messages sent in Messenger are just data being sent back and forth.

  110. I meant instant messages sent and received on the app. Will IMs be considered data as well or a text message? Thanks. AT&T is my provider.

  111. @Ikku – IMs sent through the Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone app are considered data, not text messages.

  113. For those with the problems of the contacts not showing, I believe I may have solved the problem !!!

It relates to the number groups of contacts you have. Basically the app will not/can not display contacts when you have them split into a number of groups – if you sort them all just into the one giorup, it solves the problem and you should see your contacts displayed (at least it works for me now !)

Would be interested to know if this solution works for anyone else

  114. Just a quick question. Im very paranoid about texting on my iphone, got slammed an extra $100 recently because I was texting to someone about 45 mins away but across the canadian border. International charge!

So anyways, I worry that AT&T will somehow manage to charge me anyways… so if Im using yahoo chat on my iphone with wifi enabled, i wont get charged per text, correct? And is it really free to text to a cell phone using yahoo?

    Comment by MichaelInNY — September 29, 2009 #

  115. @michaelinNY – Any texts you send from Yahoo! Messenger are free. The SMS messages you send from Yahoo! Messenger are not tied to your mobile phone; they’re going through the Yahoo! Messenger system and use your Yahoo! ID and/or name in Messenger to identify you to to the friend that receives your message on their own phone. When your friend replies to your message, it comes back to you in Yahoo! Messenger. And again, it is free to receive that reply; it has nothing to do with your carrier or your mobile phone.

Potential charges only come into play when you RECEIVE or REPLY to text messages on your phone from someone on Yahoo! Messenger. Hope that helps clarify,

  116. Is it true that if you do not log off your YM thru iphone, even if you close or restrict the application, you stay logged in?

There’s a post above that says: “To sign out of the app, tap on the Settings icon, then scroll all the way down. Tap the sign out button. Or just close the app. Once it’s been closed for 10 minutes, you’re signed out.”

    Which one is true? Thanks.

  117. please move the send button! i always hit it on accident and therefore send people jumbled and numerous messages. or make a confirmation window after you hit send. it’s too easy to hit the wrong button on an ipod touch screen.

    thanks!

  118. @Jenny – We have updated the iPhone app since this post and yes, you are signed in for up to 2 weeks on the iPhone unless you sign out of the app under ‘Settings’. See this article for more information:
