Yes, we’re still in Beta but the team has been hard at work fixing bugs and adding a few new features. Here’s a rundown of what’s in this latest release, Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta 4 (build 156957):
- Over three dozen bug fixes addressing a variety of features including file transfer, display images, voice, chat rooms, stealth settings and webcam.
- Added clearer messaging when receiving anonymous messages from your Pingbox (screenshot)
- Added a preference to separately enable/disable archiving for chat room conversations. Go to Preferences > Messaging and check the “Enable Yahoo! Chat Room Archiving” box (screenshot)
- When you report an IM as spam, it also adds the sender to your ignore list (screenshot)
- To cancel automatic sign in when you’re launching Yahoo! Messenger for Mac, hold down the SHIFT key
- Various performance and memory bug fixes
- Added a new message style called “Kobi lite”. To try it out, go to Preferences > Messaging, then change the Conversation style.

Download Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta 4
We hope you enjoy this latest version. We value your input so please stop by our Mac feedback form after you’ve tried it out and let us know your thoughts.

It looks like Mac users get Yahoo! Messenger with a native skin. How come Windows users don’t?
Comment by RoJo — February 9, 2009 #
@RoJo: Relax RoJo, Even though the Mac OS X version has a more “Mac-like” appearance, it is seriously lacking in features, which is both good and bad. For one thing, it’s annoying that my friends can’t share photos they way the would if I had used Windows. But on the other hand, the lack of features make it way more simpler than the Windows version and no ads.
Want something real bad? Try MSN Messenger on Windows. I don’t know who is who because my friends keep changing nick name constantly. I open my contact list of 30+ people and it took me a while to figure out who is the person I want to talk to. I now talk to all my MSN friends via Yahoo. The inability to control the names in my contact is a huge minus for me.

Kinda reminds me of the Yahoo! Messenger for Vista
Just Macish….
Comment by Homer — February 9, 2009 #
Hey, Im a ancious user of yahoo messanger, however I need to know: How I could show my status with current Itunes track without link?
Thanks
Comment by DREF — February 9, 2009 #
@zoffdino: Sorry if I came off as being enraged or something. I was just curious. The reason I chose to use Yahoo over MSN/Windows Live Messenger in the first place was because I liked having a native skin that wasn’t all cluttered up. I would really love to have
Yahoo does seem to be a lot more stable than MSN is (my old MSN conversations used to be plagued with long bouts of “message not sent” notifications, which is something I haven’t had a problem with in Yahoo), although I do miss having MSN’s ability to draw and send pictures inside the conversation (that Yahoo Scribbler plug-in doesn’t really compare to that MSN feature).
Oh well, I shouldn’t be complaining here. Congrats to all of the Mac Yahoo users who just got an update! (Sorry for raining on your parade!)
Comment by RoJo — February 9, 2009 #
@Rojo: I wouldn’t like my Yahoo Messenger for windows to have a native skin. I would like it to have the old YM Vista interface though.
Comment by Dara — February 9, 2009 #
@Dara: The Yahoo Vista skin/interface was great, I much prefer it over the current Windows one. Too bad they abandoned it.
Comment by RoJo — February 9, 2009 #
I’m all for Y! M…however…would be nice to be able to send photos to MSN users.
Comment by Mike — February 9, 2009 #
The new client is very reliable, stable and enhanced its performance.
While installing the new client, if you installed earlier version of Messenger with root privileges instead of admin privileges will get this warning message “The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient privileges for some of the items”. Just move the existing client to Thrash folder and install the new build version, it works fine.
Comment by Shantha Kumar — February 9, 2009 #
Yes, to be able to send photos and files to MSN users, and have the vista skin with no ads. Now that would be a nice dream.
Comment by Predator7 — February 9, 2009 #
The only feature I really care about from the PC side of things that is not in the Mac Yahoo version if Photo Sharing. I am constantly having to boot up VMWare Fusion to use this in a virtual Windows environment.
Can we please add Photo Sharing to the next Yahoo version for Mac users? Save The Cheerleader, Save The World!
Comment by Ensoniq — February 9, 2009 #
Is it really necessary to have a separate File transfers window?
Please, make transfers integrated in their respective chat tabs, like in the Windows version.
The transfers window has multiple problems:
- you can’t double click on a file to open it – you must first reveal it in Finder
- if you transfer from multiple users or you forgot to clear previous transfers, you don’t know which file is from whom.
- if you transfer multiple small files and try to chat at the same time, the transfer window steals focus from the chat window

Thanks for adding voice support, but now the webcam seems to be broken. I cannot see my friend’s webcam, loops on “starting connection.” Is this a known issue?
Comment by shruti — February 10, 2009 #
Very nice! And I’m happy for the Mac users even though (sadly, in a way) I am not. I still hope we’ll see a Linux version soon. Will we?
Comment by MAD — February 10, 2009 #
Will the UK get this, because their site seems to be void of any Mac software at present?
Comment by coxy — February 10, 2009 #
When will you add address book support for the Mac version?
Comment by Agustin Carvallo — February 10, 2009 #
it has goofy addressbook support, it doesn’t automatically figure out contacts like ichat or amsn, you have to manually link contacts to address cards.
Also webcam still barely works, although listed as one of the bugfixes.
Pingbox? i miss something? that’s a new 9.0 feature but i haven’t noticed it at all in mac client yet.
and new bug. I now get messages from DISABLED profiles, so i’m getting spammed like crazy with bots on my turned OFF profiles that i reserve only for chat. THe reason i created a sub profile for chat was to avoid this, so i can disable it when i leave chat. Now i have to block all messages which I don’t like doing cause sometimes i actually get a real person who did a search or something or looked me up..This needs to be addressed. I’m not liking 50 messages a day from Bots. If the bot problem is not going to be fixed, at least fix the client.
Comment by MysticalOS — February 10, 2009 #
oh found another bug, you cannot delete names off your ignore list if they don’t exist. so now i got a ton of bots on ignore list sine report spam now POINTLESSLY ignores bots (even though the same bot will never message you twice cause it’s haff life is about a day). I get error “unable to remove xxx cause the name does not exist” well no crap it doesn’t exist. So i got a full ignore list of unremovable bots. Brilliant thinking yahoo.
Comment by MysticalOS — February 10, 2009 #
Hi, I wonder how can I save the message archive in a mac, I know how to do that on a pc but a mac, I have no idea. Because when you update to a new version, the archive will lose, but I want to keep my chat history. Can anybody help me? Thank you so much.
Comment by Kelly — February 10, 2009 #
Bah, and i just got the auto ban for deleting names off my ignore list. The server has issued me a ban cause i wanted to delete bots off my ignore list, this ban is blocking me from adding/removing names from buddylist or ignore list, AND it’s blocking me from seeing my buddylist or whos online, it’s also blocking display pictures. Probably PMs too, the PC client usually doesn’t let you login when you get a ban but i guess mac client is bugged with that too, it let me sign in but nothing works. But I know how server ban works, i know you get banned for editing your buddylist too fast (adding or removing x amount of friends within x seconds/minutes etc)….what i didn’t know is that the server script applied same thing to ignore list….I understand why they do it with adding buddies, so you can’t use buddy adding as a way to spam another user. But what i don’t understand is a temp ban from removing buddies or clearing your ignore list of bots. These are examples on how backwards yahoo is. let bots run wild in chat, and PMs, but always constantly punishing real users for things that make no sense.

@ yahoo team – keep on doing the same good job guys. when will you release the final version – good sound and webcam quailty, message archiving, not a separate transfer window (who needs that anyway?). we are already stressed, the PC verson has already reached version 9!!!

I updated my ym to this version last night..
and from then on, whenever I try to log in,
it disconnects for like 2 seconds, reconnect then disconnects again.. this happens 5-9 times before it stabilize..
I’m quite sure that I’m not having internet connection problems.. I’ve tried bringing my laptop to several places with wi-fi and the same thing happens every time..
anything in particular I have to do?
thanks in advance..

Upgraded a few days ago.
BUG REPORT
Launching Messenger returns the following error message when “Automatically Sign In” is checked:
“The application could not connect to the messenger servers.
The servers may be busy, please try again.”
This happens EVERY time on any profile where Auto sign in is checked.
Regular (non automatic) Sign In works. Yes, easy to work around — just sign in manually — but an annoying bug not there in the last version.

this is insane..
my ym has totally gone mad..
now it never stabilizes..
it just keeps on connecting for 2 secs then disconnect then connect again..
I uninstalled my ym.. and now trying to find a site where I can download the beta 3.0 version 3.. this new version 4 sucks big time in my laptop..
sadly, all the sites that I’ve visited updated their mirror links already and now ALL lets you download the same version 4…!! I can’t find a version 3 installer!!

The MAC version is awesome, but when my wife views my webcam (she has Vista) she says it goes black. And it happens anywhere from 5 minutes to 30 minutes after she starts viewing my webcam. My side says she is still viewing but I have to turn the cam off and on and then resend the invite. The voice conversation feature works flawlessly the entire time though. Anybody have any ideas? And you can now choose a new message style for your conversation windows, just to shake things up. More here. [...]

That’s it I declare SHENANIGANS!! Beta 4 has already crapped out and spontaneously logged itself off TWICE in its very first 5 minutes of operation. Get real Yahoo, this is NOT the way to inspire confidence in your infrastructure from your members, nor does it really make people want to stick with your systems. Stop trying to be a second Microsoft, OK? Try to make stuff that doesn’t just run, but runs RELIABLY!

as macuser, yahoo messenger is a great way to meet pc users.. it will never reach the great ichat and i really hope google make googletalk chat good for pcusers so we can meet in googletalk, cause then I can only use ichat..
version 3 has great design, looks wonderful, and it uses little ram/cpu..really great.. After using ichat webcam, its a little dissapointing to use the cam in yahoo, but still; in yahoo a macuser can meet a pc user after all.. U did really well with the new version 3.. Transfer is quite fast too!
What about fullscreen webcam? and not leave out functions for mac.. let mac users get the same functions as pc users..
thanks for a great app

I have to agree about the last skype comment – Yahoo has much better sound quality.
A huge add would be the address book integration. Right now it doesn’t even seem to bring in numbers from your Yahoo address book – which I sync with my Apple address book. Seems like a big oversight on their part.
Comment by Spencer — May 1, 2009 #
I have been working with the new beta for a few days now – Voice support is still not working correctly on my MacBook Pro and Webcams barely if ever work. Looks like the Yahoo team has a little more work to do to resolve these problems.
Comment by pete — May 2, 2009 #
I bought a Mac recently and downloaded Y! Messenger. The 1st thing I noticed what it wasn’t archiving my messages. I left it like that for a couple of days until today which I needed to see my previous conversations. And when I went through the Preference Pane ‘VOILA” It does save.. And I didn’t enable it..
I don’t care how many messenger services have released, Yahoo looks much more user/environment friendly than any other IM service. GTalk looks sooo boorish though file sharing is damn good compared to Yahoo.
In Windows:
Everytime I share a .zip or a photo over file sharing, it creates a problem. and stops sending. I have to restart yahoo everytime it does that.. coz the file is still being used by yahoo in some way or the other though it has stopped sending..
Anyways, The Photo Share option should be improved a bit more in Mac Version
Comment by Ajan — May 3, 2009 #
So, you make a clean version for mac users, then dump windows users with advertising all over the place? In the messenger, webcam ads, you have no shame in the game?
Is this how you treat windows users?
Is it because Mac users simply WON’T put up with ads?
Comment by Donald — May 3, 2009 #

I just purchased a Macbook and had to switch to Yahoo messenger for Mac. I must say I like the windows version a lot better. Call history was easier to find, preferences were more thorough and the biggest complaint–NO PHOTO SHARE. I have friends who have slow computers or just do not want to save a file of a photo I send, all they want to do is view them–PLEASE bring PHOTO SHARE to Messenger for Mac-than I will be very happy with it. I am thinking about splitting my hard drive so I have a partition of windows so I can run the windows version of Messenger–but that is not why I bought a mac. photo share is important to a lot of people-all the blogs mention it.

Thanks a bunch for this new build, it works fine in my case. But when will the games be supported on the Mac messenger too? or the plugins and photo sharing?
.
I know that they bring you profit, but most users simply don’t like them. And I’m looking forward for the final release, and the Linux version
.
And the most important question: Will there be a Linux version soon? I, personally, use a Linux machine too (Kubuntu 9.04) and all i have is an old 1.0 Yahoo! Messenger for Linux, that literary sucks in terms of aspect and functionality. It has only the basic basics of the basic messaging. I know that Linux is open source and that’s the most common excuse for companies that don’t want to extend their work in that area, but there are more Linux users than Mac users, you know?
Thanks again Yahoo! team for this wonderful update, and above all, thanks for sparing us of those ads

It seems as though it happens when the person i am chatting with does not respond for awhile. maybe that person is chatting with some one else, and when chatting with others that is when our ids change position … when it happens i do not see and indication that a message is being typed … why does this happen? I am using the newest version of ym for the mac

Audio video chat isn’t very good, too slow
how can you do to fix it?

Yet another post about webcam issues. Quite frequently, it crashes unexpectedly; which is somewhat tolerable (for a while anyway). But now, it’s quite annoying to plug in my iPhone while using the webcam, and once I unplug it, the webcam service disconnects. By far, this is the worst yahoo messenger service I have ever experienced in my 5 years of usage. I’m sure the devs are working hard to improve this beta, but it still needs a bit of work.

There still is no support for sending out an instant message to everyone in a group. It is something so small that I am sure could be fixed really easily. What’s the deal here?

I am not able to figure why it is getting disconnected millions of times. I dont know if they have resolved the bugs or added the bugs.
Please advise me the way to overcome the issue.

When will photo sharing and video sharing be available?

I use Yahoo messenger on my mac and when I get a message via pingbox it shows up as Guest#XY as opposed to showing the nickname. When I used Yahoo messenger on a PC and signed into my account I was able to see my guests’ nicknames. Is that just a glitch on the mac or some setting that I have not been able to find? Please help, many of my customers who use the pingbox on my site assume that I know why they are once they type in their nickname.
Thank you.

@bebebling – Are you requiring users to enter a nickname or is it optional? You might want to check the setting on your Pingbox to make sure a nickname is required. Go to http://messenger.yahoo.com/pingbox/studio

Sarah, thanks for your response. Yes, the option to require a nickname is checked. Like I said, when I sign into my account on a PC I can view the nicknames of people who IM me through the pingbox. It’s on my mac, which I primarily use, that I only see a guest#.
Any other tips?

@bebebling – I found out today that nicknames from Pingboxes have never been supported in the Mac version, only when you’re receiving pings in our PC client. Right now we don’t have a definitive date as to when support for this will be added to the Mac.

I can’t sign in at all since this update. I get alternating “unknown error” and “servers may be busy” boxes.
