New 9.0 version: may fix sign-in issues

February 5, 2009 on 1:32 pm | In 9.0 version | 289 Comments

We released an updated version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 today (9.0.0.2128). This latest build includes a fix for the sign-in issues that have been affecting some users. If you were seeing an error code “81003005” when trying to sign in, this latest version may fix that problem. Even if you were experiencing a different kind of sign-in issue, we recommend installing this latest version.

After you’ve tried it out, please let us know how it works for you by leaving a comment on the blog.

And yes, we are still working on the installation issues! Thanks for your patience.

  3. Looking good!

After the sign-in and installation fixes, perhaps you guys could look into the widespread issues where Messenger will lock up for 10+ seconds at a time when various things occur (like PMs from certain people, opening a chat window, etc.). I’ve partially traced the issue to an issue in yui.dll and this issue seems to occur more on Vista than XP.

  8. A couple issues.

-The taskbar re-draw issue is present with IM and chat room windows (probably conference windows too). To reproduce this (on Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit) click the minimize button when a PM/chat window’s taskbar item is before another taskbar item (like open folder or browser) and it’ll re-draw itself at the end when minimizing (it shouldn’t do this).

-When you have Audibles disabled and you change skins, it prompts you to enable Audibles. In my eyes, it shouldn’t be asking this in the first place.

  12. Windows XP Pro 32-bit – The install went fine

Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit – The install reach 30 – 40% and stopped responding. Then it started responding again and finished. This has not happened with previous builds of Yahoo! Messenger. Yes I was running it as administrator.

    I can also confirm this:

-The taskbar re-draw issue is present with IM and chat room windows (probably conference windows too). To reproduce this (on Windows Vista Home Premium SP1 32-bit) click the minimize button when a PM/chat window’s taskbar item is before another taskbar item (like open folder or browser) and it’ll re-draw itself at the end when minimizing (it shouldn’t do this).

-When you have Audibles disabled and you change skins, it prompts you to enable Audibles. In my eyes, it shouldn’t be asking this in the first place.

Happens on Windows XP Pro 32-bit as well.

  19. I want to go back to my earlier version of IM I cant dont see anything that I send on the upper screen and I cannot receive any messages though they are coming through at the little alert pop up at the bottom of my desktop. I am extremely frustrated I don’t understand why , when somthting is working fine people have to change it and “make it better” it isnt better how do i go back to 8.0 or 8.2 or whatever the last level was.

  20. What is the deal? 9.0 Downloaded and uninstalled it about three times and it still has an error message when you go to sign on. It seems like your going backwards instead of making it better. I am having to resort to Windows Live and this program would not be my first choice. In Iraq some help would be nice……..

  22. This version still has a BIG BUG…
File sending doesn’t work… If I try to send some file (usually bigger than a couple hundred KB) It stars sending, sends usualy 100-200 KB (monitorizing file size at the other terminal) and than gives an error. The problem isn’t caused on a single terminal (tested on various PCs, different internet connections etc) and also file sending on Messenger 8 and Messenger for Vista (on the same machines that Mess9 gives error) works fine.

  23. Hi , Yahoo still didn’t fix the issue with the extras connection that causes many people to stop seeing their display picture or the other person display picture and end up looking all over the internet for a fix and finding nothing but re installing flash player hoping it will fix the problem and when they do that and it doesn’t work they give up , the problem is not only with the display picture the same it is with other extras as well such as IMvironment , the problem is with Yahoo sensitivity toward any changes made to the network or security settings when other messengers don’t get affected by such minor changes

  25. First I installed the Philippine version of 9, thinking I’d be able to sms the Philippines, but that version doesn’t have the pc to phone calling feature. Thinking I’d lose my address book if I just removed 9. I installed the American version on top of it, and things are fine, except my usb phone no longer works. Can I just revert to messenger 8 without making things worse?

    Comment by Steve Keats — February 6, 2009 #

  26. This version seems to be running better than previous versions.

Also there been updates to these programs that I not yet figure out which ones yahoo uses when running

    Adobe Shock player
    Java

Also Firefox has updated a couple of times as well

I have also notice that certain firewalls do not seem to work well with yahoo messenger

Zone Alarm being one of them that I have issues with recently. Now use comodo and no issues

  33. It would be helpful if everyone when describing there issue’s to please provide the following information:

    1. Operating system
    2. Firewall that you use
    3. Anti virus that you use
4 Is machine up to date with various patches from Microsoft
    5. Do u have the latest java, flash player and shockware
    player

I know from having used it that Zone Alarm and yahoo messenger do not play well together. This is a common problem that the firewall is somehow blocking yahoo from working properly if you did not set up right. Can be remedied by uninstalling, rebooting and reinstalling the firewall.

I recommend using the firewall from Comdo Group. It free and plenty of help can be found in there forums. The link is http://www.comodo.com/

By going to FileHippo.com you can download a simple application that will look for common applications and show you witch ones can be updated. The link for there free update checker is http://filehippo.com/updatechecker

By providing this information and making checking some simple solutions. This should help make it easier for Yahoo, yourself and others to figure out what is causing the problems that are coming up

p.s. one person already found out that there issue was firewall related in this comment section

  35. A group which I conference with regularly has had a Vista crash problem for a long time now. If running Messenger on Vista, and a cam drops out and goes black, you must close that cam window very fast, otherwise Messenger will lock up.
I completely deleted everything having to do with Yahoo yesterday, and loaded the latest Messenger software. Tonight, as cams went offline…CRASH ! I took a screen-shot. If the development team wants it just let me know. I would be happy to pull log files or whatever it takes to fix this. Thanks.

It shows up as one of the processes that’s running but it won’t show the GUI on screen. So basically you click the icon to run and nothing happens. Anybody else having this issue?

I’m changing the status to invisible, and it’s changing it back after 10 sec. maximum. Not to mention the video calls frames(one frame per 100 years). I’m only waiting for one more update, and if nothing changes, I’m only to be found on skype. Why sticking to a certain software when there are loads of other better ones?

The new Yahoo Messenger is a bit too annoying for me. Whenever I receive an IM a message on the bottom right corner appears. And there is no way of turning it OFF. What are the differences in the ids.

For example any characters that are not letters or numbers?

    For everyone

Also If you are using a firewall product (Comodo, Norton, etc). Make sure that the windows firewall is turned off. This can cause issues as well.

Please also state the operating system u are using? It seems that Vista users are having more issues than XP users from what is being stated on the blog. If this continues to be the case Yahoo could end up having a better lead on what the problem is.

Also just wondering if it is a problem in Vista could it because of the UAC control in Vista?

  82. Lets throw out YM 9 and go back to YM8.. I really hate the new version. Especially the fact that you need to be available to offer your cam to someone that is hidden… also when you change font when your talking to someone some times it reverts to standard black Ariel. I hate that too. I have a work around for that by setting the default font in preferences but why can it just stay when you set it manually? YM is a real disappointment.. all my friends comment how much they hate it too. Come on Yahoo.. cant you do better then this?

    Comment by Ben Green — February 10, 2009 #

  83. P.S.
Can you also do something about the frequent lockups and make a better compression routine for web cam? This is the 21st Century.. We put people in space.. can we get ym to make a messenger that isn’t so buggy? Beta Test.. ever hear that before? Also.. lastly.. can yahoo make some improvements on sms? Can Yahoo resolve sms server issues? I expect more from Yahoo then this.

  88. is there any new update to what yahoo messenger plans on doing to fix the issue. I’ve provided a lot of information now finding out it is my actual id that’s giving me problems as my gf is able to log on my computer and I’m not and when I tried logging onto her computer it gives the same error but she’s still able to get on. both our systems are set up the same except she has xp home edition while I have xp professional. We both are running the mcafee av software which also has a firewall software with it. I can access my mail and even go into IM in email but its yahoo messenger itself that won’t let me log on. Can someone at Yahoo kindly let me know what it is they’re doing to fix this issue. This is getting more than ridiculous and truly I am ready to stick with msn. I have many contacts on yahoo and will be a pain to have to track down each of those to use msn.

    Comment by Ben — February 11, 2009 #

  91. I have also similar problem “81003005″, i think this is not YM issue, i have a feeling M$ did something so YM 9.0 won’t run. I remembered how Microsoft killed Lotus, one programmer claimed “DOS is aint done until Lotus wont run”, and Lotus123 kept on crashing on most DOS versions, so users are forced to buy Excel which they thought are not buggy compared to Lotus123. Those are the dirty tricks of Microsoft, and that’s their well known technique to annihilate someone they hate.

    I have a suggestions

-publish the XP services that are being used by YM (from installation TO logging in). Windows Intaller (Started), Windows Firewall (off! -someone claimed this must be done), COM+(started), DCOM(started), etc etc. so that users and admins can install and use YM flawlessly.

    regards,
    YM fan

  92. Hello!
I have posted this comments in a previous news but anyway, i’m writing it again here:

More than the localization of the “friend typing notification message”, I would like to speak about the way it is working now:
When a friend is typing, the notification message appears immediately and stays for about 10 sec. It is always working like this.
Even if a friend is typing a long message for about 30sec or more, I can’t see the notification anymore 10 sec after he has started writing.
So I have no notification for the last 20 sec (or more) and I don’t know if he has stopped writing or not.
To make me clear, in fact, the notification message reacts each time as if my friend was typing for only about 10 sec and stop.
I have also notice that my friend needs to totally stop typing on YM for about 7 sec to re-activate the notification message on my windows.
This is far too long!! And it was not working like this with YM8.
My conclusion is that the notification message is not working as well as it was previously.
It is daily annoying to have this doubt when someone is starting to writing you: “Has he stopped writing? Or is he writing me a long message? “
In conclusion: I would prefer no notification at all than a “non accurate one”.
I would be very VERY pleased to have an answer from the Yahoo messenger team about this.
    Thanks for all.

    4. Did your yahoo id originate from an account with sbcglobal?

This information can help yahoo figure out where the problem is more quickly since there are so many users and computer configurations out there.

  112. Okay, after reformatting my hard drive because I ran into a software issue, I reinstalled Yahoo; I had the first 9.0 version, and, while I was able to find out through your blog that you could change the IM appearance by hitting “ctrl+shift+0″… I’m even /more/ disappointed with the “Last message received on” slash “– is typing a message” location on this new version (which might as well be 9.1). What’s the point of even having the status bar at the bottom, if nothing appears on it now?

Either include an option to change it back, or, another user has been lost.

It’s a shame too; I’d been a Yahoo fan from the start, preferred it over /every/ other IM client… And now, I’ll even use AIM over this. Too many drastic changes that make it a completely different IM client. This isn’t even Yahoo anymore, to me.

    Firewall: Cisco 871
    AntiVirus: McAfee
    Yahoo ID Origination: Free account.
    Yahoo Messenger: 9.0.0.2128

I recieve the error 81003005 when signing in with my account through any computer on my home network. I also encounter the error when connecting outside of my firewall. I created another Yahoo ID for testing and that account logs in properly on all computers. My account also recieves that error outside of my home network.

I have tried resetting my password and that hasn’t cleared up the issue. In fact, it is now causing issues with authenticating to my IPhone. This is becoming quite frustin

I did try installing an older version of Messenger and that failed with my account as well.

  115. While this is likely not an issue for non-business users… just thought I would mention why the new version may not work (like it did before) for some like me.

It comes down to the fact that YIM is built on IE, and regardless of your connection settings for proxy within YIM, IE’s proxy will still be used for many things. The first stage of the two stage logon process is one such thing.

And now the newer builds of v9.0 appear to be doing this first stage “capacity” call slightly different. Such that it gets routed across my VPN link when before it would not if I had YIM set to “Connect directly to the Internet” selected under Connection preferences.

So making sure your proxy settings in IE are correct is important (blank if not using a proxy). But this is not enough to get mine to work while using our company’s VPN, as the VPN software I use for work redirects traffic to our web proxy servers regardless of the setting in IE. And there the request is blocked and a 302 redirect is returned. Even though we are allowed to use YIM to chat with customers, getting this unblocked will likely take some time. This is a problem even if I already have YIM logged in, as when the route is modified, YIM logs out if a SOCKS proxy is not being used.

So for me the only solution so far is to spin up a local SOCKS proxy server (this is to stop the disconnects when I spin up my VPN), and to make sure I am logged in with YIM BEFORE spining up my VPN connection to begin with.

I cannot believe that the yahoo development team is releasing software WITHOUT TESTING IT FIRST to make sure there’s no serious bugs (such as this one – hundreds, if not thousands, of users affected.) 155. LOL, what a simple fix.

    Head over to https://edit.yahoo.com/forgotroot?done=&src=&partner=&intl=us

Click on either “I forgot my password” or “My password doesn’t work”, and follow the process.

Click on the link that is sent to you via email, and choose a new password. Viola. Error # 81003005 is solved.

It seems that whatever changes Yahoo made corrupted a ton of passwords, but yet the client doesn’t tell you that your password is wrong and spits out some ambiguous error code and leaves you trying to figure out what the problem is.

  160. ok going on weeks with this issue. been reading everyones posts and tried everything I see. My account did start with sbcglobal. I use mcafee for firewall and av and use xp pro. everybody but me can sign on yahoo on my laptop and even tried logging myself on my gf’s desktop and still won’t let me sign on but she uses yahoo every day. have changed my pw 3 times. downloaded every version that’s come up since this problem as well as every update filehippo showed me. So now this is gone beyond ridiculous. I’ve not seen any effort on the part of the yahoo team to even address that they’re getting these posts. I do notice a Daniel asking for more info but he’s not posted in awhile. So really what is going on? is there a solution in the works? There’s been lots of information posted by myself and others. there seems to be an issue with accounts logging in on the yahoo messenger platform and not the email or the messenger version in email. I would reallly love to see some kind of response from the yahoo team at least acknowleding and giving us some tidbit on what they’re doing to correct this.

Based on the posts there seems to be a number of issues affecting people’s ability to login?

Did u try resetting your password via the link that is in the post that Brian put. This i think may be the the solution to the problem with error code 81003005.

Because from what i can tell it an issue that yahoo caused because there not enough similarities between everyone with there computer information.

If anyone else has success with the solution that Brian this please post your success so that we know what is working?

  169. Ok, I tried the resetting my password. I tried once with my old password which included numbers, changed it again to one with special characters, and then again to one that was just letters. All 3 came back the same result with the error 81003005. Am not sure what else to try. I can still use messenger in email so all is not lost but it rather inconvenient.

When YM 8 was first released I encountered the same problem, had to use meebo so I can chat with friends. Does YM 9 is also consuming bigger bandwith, when there are many YM users on your area/office, you get shut out?

the strangest thein that yahoo 9 works just fine after being downloaded immediately.. if I turned off my laptop, it doesnt even want to launch and if launches, it gives me teh silly 810030005 message.. I kept my laptop on stand by for 3 days to keep yahoo working.. hte next day it gave me the error message but after I tried again it signed in.. the next day it gave me the same problem again!..

this is so weird and unacceptable from yahoo.. millions of users are using it and they really let them down.. it is a big company and shud give better software and when things like this happen to many many ppl, it shud offer a good solution, not to let us searching the web in vain to fix their prob.!!!

  185. I’m starting to think Yahoo’s not worth it anymore. The 810030005 error for sign-in, the 40402 error for contact detail editing, the relocation of the “– is typing a message”, the new IM appearance (changeable by ctrl+shift+#, but still)… Too many changes that have ruined the Yahoo experience.

I was a Yahoo fan from the start; but now, they should be bought out by Microsoft. At least a computer company would know what they’re doing, and make only the changes that would /improve/ the user experience, rather than piss off the users.

  186. 81003004

    Dear Yahoo,
I was helping my dad setup yahoo messenger on his Win XP computer. We installed the latest Y! 9 and tried signing in with his yahoo id. We got the 80003004 connection error.

He has a brodband DSL connection, so we verified that the YM connection settings and IE connection settings were both set to use a direct Internet connection. We verified that IE itself is happy and connects to websites. For some reason, YM still shows the same error.

I have tried logging him on from my mac and that seems to work. Any pointers on whats going wrong?

  189. How is it possible that Yahoo Messenger, after what seems like months of complaints about the same sign-in problems, still has not addressed the sign-in issues that plague even the newest version? This is ridiculous and Yahoo should be embarrassed for producing such a lousy product that just plain doesn’t work. I will be looking elsewhere from now on.

  190. hello yahoo
ever since, i had been satisfied with the service you provide with the messenger client. considering that users don’t have to pay for anything to use Y!M, you well did a pretty excellent job.
i have downloaded this version (9.0.0.2128) of Messenger and yes, it was able to resolve the code 81003005 sign-in problem. however, the problem just came back yesterday when i tried to sign in; it returns the same error again.
i have also tried to use my other account but the problem keeps on manifesting.

shall i install the newer fix you have (2136), or shall i wait for this bug to be completely resolved?

*i really need the core version of the software because i frequently utilize the message archive, not available via web.im and mail-messenger.

thanks, God bless, and more power!

  191. I’m wondering if any yahoo admin is actually reading these. The problem still exists and there’s not been anything said on behalf of yahoo as to what’s going on and their plans to fix the issue. Its obvious from the posts made that there is a corruption issue with their username database so why is there nothing beingn done? I’m really disappointed with this situation. I’ve been a long time yahoo user and have never been disatisfied till now. If you value your clients at all, say something. Think its very disappointing to everyone that they list issues here and nothing is being said by yahoo.

  202. Pieces of cake I’ve solve this problem
I’ve 2 YM that broken at the office n Home fixed all
Same problem with me I think the problem….. is 1) using mozila because it cleary said that YM using IE as it base cache 2) playing around/ changing 1 account to another ( and not using IE) 3). The most important is Changing the connection… from dial up to broadband or…(if this the case even it is ok to continue ones you change the setting but it won’t affect YM until you must restart your Comp)
How to fix 1) follow every step at http://help.yahoo.com/l/us/yahoo/messenger/messenger9/messenger/ms9tasignintips.html
And always logout after each step With……..IE
With and change you connecting to dialup don’t use the broadband/lan
I think this is the crucial point YM have a problem with the connect just because you guys have broadband connection don’t use it…..
Change back to dialup and apply first and then Restart……………… I wont work if you don’t….. and the result is fixed 2 YM…..

  210. ok have solved my issue after 3 hrs and 20 min on the phone with microsoft turns out I had an issue with sp3 installation that was corrupted. Didn’t know I had the issue untill I tried to install IE8. After hours of “troubleshooting” the final result was uninstalling SP3 then putting in IE8 then redownloading SP3. The corruption of SP3 was causing issues with IE and in turn was giving me troubles on yahoo messenger since YM works off of IE. My suggestion to any of you having the YM issue still try downloading IE8 and if you have problems installing it then you too may have a corrupted SP3 which you can uninstall in the add/remove programs list then redownload it. I hope this helps some of you as this has been the most stressful issue I’ve ever had to deal with and after only 3 hrs of sleep then 3+ hrs with Microsoft am finally relieved the issue is complete.

  223. It may not be your new version of IM causing the #81003002 error code. It may be your connection to ATT through yahoo that is at fault. I found out the hard way. I could not log in to either yahoo mail or IM. If you change carriers leaving ATT your IM and Mail account on Yahoo with an ATT or sbcglobal suffix will be terminated within 60 days. I changed to Comcast and was not warned. I lost 6 years worth of email and contacts with a simple “Sorry” from ATT today. They offered to reinstate the account “If” I paid for a new land line, but since today was the cut off, my account was simply terminated. Be careful that your yahoo account is not linked to your phone service. Cautionary tale.

  242. Upgraded to the most recent version a few days ago..in the middle of a conversation with a friend, it kicks off and starts acting up. Can’t even get a sign in dialog. I reopen it, try to log in, and get error 81003003, account locked. Never got that before on 8, Trillian or Pidgin… and I use YIM daily.

I can still get into my mail via cookie, but am afraid to log out, since it sounds like once you do, you’re stuck!

    Comment by sabr2th319 — June 30, 2009 #

  243. My problem isn’t with signing in but with STAYING signed in. Every few minutes I’m mysteriously signed out of messenger with a notice saying I’ve been signed out because I signed in on a different computer. Please tell me what’s going on and how to stop this from happening.

    1. Operating system – Vista 32-bit

  260. how do you turn off the annoying pop up of when people go online and offline in bottom right of screen. 9.0 seems to have removed that option of turning it off… the older version you had a choice.
Please help out, it’s driving me crazy!!!!!!!

    Comment by dcrab — August 17, 2009 #

  261. @dcrab – From within Yahoo! Messenger, go to the Messenger menu and select Preferences. Then click on “Alerts & Sounds” on the left hand side, then change the options on the right. Click Apply, then OK when you’re done.

  265. Hi,everybody!
I have the same problem, just like Ana.I tried to contact customer care,i mailed them trying to inform them with my issue.I also gave them personal info, so they can identify my yahoo!messenger ID &e-mail.But i didn’t receive any news.Nothing.More than 24 hours have passed since i mailed them with my problem, and i still expect somebody from the contact customer care will help me with this error. It is very annoying and i hope i will get back my e-mail,cause it’s extremely important for me.
Also,i have to say that if i try to reset my password it won’t let me identify my ID.If i try to log in from the web page,it keeps saying me “use your full id” or something like that. But i’m sure i’m spelling right my id and password.
Oh,i hope somebody could fix this problem.
    Take care of yourselves.
    Vlad.

  266. Sara Bacon,

The 81003002 error has to do with your servers … my wife’s email it’s like non-existent :
66.196.82.7 failed after I sent the message.
Remote host said: 554 delivery error: dd Sorry your message to andr*********@yahoo.com cannot be delivered. This account has been disabled or discontinued [#102]. – mta142.mail.re1.yahoo.com

So , tell the people the truth , that by accident your techs deleted some of the accounts. Personally , if this problem is not solved and accounts reinstated … I will have to sell my shares from Yahoo , and just invest my money somewhere else.
You will loose a lot of business because some of these Y!M users are also CallOut users that pay for the services.

    Respectfully , Radu John
