Updated version of 9.0 now available
January 12, 2009 on 8:52 am | In 9.0 version | 125 Comments
Today we released a refresh of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 (version 9.0.0.2112). This updated version includes:
– Various bug fixes to address sign-in issues that some users were experiencing. And another fix for a Windows Vista crash that occurred due to a conflict between 9.0 and IOLO anti0virus software.
- A new location for the typing notification message. When you’re in an IM conversation, you’ll notice that the “XXXX is typing a message” notification now appears inline with the conversation up above (rather than at the bottom of the IM window).
- A new version of the offline message window. You’ll now find a distinction between offline messages from friends on your list and those that aren’t, as well as easier spam reporting.

Click below to download and install this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/win
We are also aware of the installation problems that some users are experiencing. We are working hard to find a fix and as soon as we have one, we’ll let you know here on the blog. Thanks for your patience.

Thanks fo the update. I will download it right away.
The new offline message feature looks very interesting.

Ughhh. Why are we still not able to maximise the main Yahoo! messenger window. This is so irritating to work in a small size window. It’s so irritating that I have almost completely stopped using Yahoo! messenger. I don’t even see anyone online in my Yahoo! messenger list these days.
Please give the option to maximise the main Yahoo! messenger window. I complained about this last time as well. I thought this new version would have that option….but it doesn’t. Why are you people such thickskins?

The new Yahoo Messenger i don’t like how you see users type now in the pm Window y would you’s even do that anyways can yous change it back or have a Option how ppl would like to see users typing to you in the pm window in Preferences
also you’s need to fix with what ever you’s done with the call if im chatting with someone who’s not on my list and they wanna do call you cant even do it now
Comment by Cisco — January 12, 2009 #
Ehh, if I were you I’d make the new typing notification optional with the option to switch between them.
However, the following bugs have NOT been addressed…
Messenger Bugs:
-The size of the text input area in instant messages isn’t saved.
-Sometimes the instant message window size isn’t saved.
-There is no way to turn off the Messenger tips (in the IM windows) in Messenger, other than a registry key from the v8.1.0.421 build.
-Cannot perform : chat emotes in chats anymore.
-Version registry key under HKCU\Software\yahoo\pager is still stuck as 0.0.0.0.
-Messenger locks up for no reason at times, especially with a captcha visible on screen. Could be possibly due to a bug in yui.dll.
I’d recommend going back to the old system put in place with Messenger v8.1 and before regarding the instant message window size, placement and text input area size.
Now, there’s some server-side problems and exploits you guys should be aware of.
Server-side Issues & Exploits:
-Webcam servers are unstable and sometimes unusable.
-Donkey Punch chat room voice chat exploit.
-0×1C additional conference invite packet exploit which can be used to fill the disconnection buffer queue (the ‘buffer boot’) to disconnect ANY users.
-0×1C additional conference invite packets can be sent over 9K in size due to a bug in service 81 (it can only be sent from the SP1 and AC4 servers) which can disconnect ANY users.
-Users are able to launch denial-of-service attacks on the RTP servers of an individual chat room, which causes ALL users to lose voice chat due to the RTP servers having low bandwidth.
I recommend removing the disconnection rule (buffer) from the servers again like back in May 2008, which essentially ’solved’ the buffer boot exploit going around. I’d also recommend moving all the RTP servers to something that can handle DoS attacks on it.

I don’t like the new typing notifications message placement.
FIrst of all it seems a bit strange to have it appear in the middle of the window. (pin it to the bottom left of the window would be better imo) Secondly, it disappears when I’ve typed and sent a new message, so I lose the ability to see when the previous message I got came. Sure I can turn on timestamps, but that’s still more work than before. And that’s always a bad thing.
And now there’s unused real estate where they used to be. I suppose you intend to put text ads there?
To summarize, I don’t see the point of moving it.

I just wish that the Yahoo team will just fix the Webcam Server Busy issue. It is really hard to have a webcam conversation when everytime I or my girlfriend try to connect and we get that server busy notification.
Please just try to fix that problem..
Thanks!

When will Y! Messenger get a decent interface? This new one is pretty flamboyant. Why isn’t there a way to use Windows native skin? Kthxbye.

Oh how nice, messenger has been updated. Unfortunately, because profiles are hosed and chatrooms are mostly “botrooms”, most of my friends have left yahoo which renders any updates to messenger pretty much useless to me…. actually, messenger is pretty much useless to me now.

I don’t like Yahoo 9 becouse there’s a huge BUG on it and not even on this version it’s not fixed. Yahoo 9 still activates automaticly the animation of maximize and minimize.i don’t know if i should call it a “bug” but atleast give us the option to disable it becouse not everybody needs that option and it’s quite annoying

Comment by mucu — January 13, 2009 #
Mucu, it’s only a matter of time until the YMSG15 protocol Yahoo! Messenger v8.1 uses becomes dated, and removed. It may be a couple years until the protocol is pulled since the older YMSG12 protocol is still in effect.
Which brings up a point Yahoo, isn’t it about time to disable YMSG12 support?

I have found that the option of ‘ignore chat invitations’ does not work…Even with the option to ‘ignore all but on friends list’ and the ‘ignore chat invites’ chat invites and add friend invites are still coming through….Booters in chat rooms are using this via ‘conference invites’ to boot people off their messengers..

These are some problem of my YM 9.0 version:
I can’t accept & send file to my friend..sometimes I can do that..but often cannot..
&sometimes my friend see me as invisible while at that time I view available..&my other friend see me available..
when in conference..let’s say we were 7 people..sometimes one of them talk & I can’t see the conversation that he wrote..but only that one person..the rest..is normal..then I have to sign out..sign in again..&then join the conversation again..
why was that?it’s so weird..
oh..&a lot of audibles can’t appear..did not available..huhu..

Congratulations to Carol Bartz on her appointment as CEO for yahoo. I hope that she takes some time to read the yahoo messenger blog posts and re-directs the messenger team to fix everything that they’ve broken or allowed to fail over the past few years. I know I’m probably dreaming but, it could happen. I might even win the lottery, LOL

Hello Yahoo Team.
Congrats for Yahoo Mesenger that you released last time.
I have an idea. It’s something that I want to say to you and I think also that is a good think that you can improve in YM. It would be very nice if you can add a search box on instant messaging window, and one in the message archive area.
What do you think about this? I’ve spent much time searching some words in the conversation window, just to remember something that the person said about. It would be quickly to find these few words that I remember, to find the entire context where it was.
In message archive window it would be also very nice to introduce the search box. I’m sure that every person wanted one day to find an old conversation that they made with someone. For example, with one person I have many conversations made until today, and I want to find one from these. But there are a lot of conversations with that person, so I can find it fast. If i know some words that I remember from that conversation, it would be easier for me to find it, and to read it again.
This is my idea, hoping you to read and take it in the consideration.
Regards from Romania, sorry for english language mistakes and keep up the good work!

Cristian, I really like your idea of adding search capabilities to archived messages.
Yahoo! Messenger team, please consider adding this feature, as I frequently use your product to communicate with business associates. It would be very helpful to search my archives for specific words.
Also, the new version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 hangs for about 30-45 seconds at logon. I am running Windows Vista Ultimate Edition 64-bit on a Dell Precision T3400. Once the program starts responding again, it doesn’t have this problem until the next logon.
Comment by Dustin Cook — January 14, 2009 #
Wow, it is so refreshing to read a post about a positive suggestion like Christian’s. It tops all the negative whining that others make on this page, I back up Christian’s idea 100%! It would be such a treat to be able to search key phrases in archives to find a certain conversation that otherwise would be such an effort to find.
Also Yahoo! I do like the new offline message box you guys revamped. Makes it a lot easier to spam messages of those that aren’t on my list.
One suggestion I have though, will the limit on the ignore list ever be raised? I think it only ignores a 100 ID limit and once it’s reached, the spam feature doesn’t keep the spamming ID’s block. If something like that could be worked on it would be great!
Thanks for improving Yahoo. Again, listen to Christian’s idea, I think he gots something golden there.

I love 9.0.0.2112 look compared to 8.1. My only major issue I’ve had with 9.0 beta’s and beyond is the launchcast radio. It loads and shows me the groups of stations but won’t let me select anything. So I downgraded to the last known version of 8.1…

Problem: When logging onto Messenger a msg appears saying your account has been locked.
I try it next day it works fine, then a day or two later i try to log in again and it says account locked.
Possible Fix: When hackers or whoever is trying to access my account tries to log in 3 times, send them to the Forgot Password site automatically, instead of locking my account. Its becoming an ongoing problem and driving me insane!

Anyway Yahoo!, this is a great update I can’t wait for up coming changes.
I have one suggestion though, is to add a setting (in Messages) so if no one wants the typing message to be inline with the messages in the box I think you should set up a Disable / Enable option because some people like the older way too. =)
I just love that offline message thing though.
Keep going!

I have downloaded version 2009.01.12.1 at least twice and have tried to install and launch on at least three different times with the same bad results. I get a Yahoo IM 9.0 message before login appears stating that the program will need to be shut down for reasons unknown to me. The message is delivered every time even on re-boot prior to activating the icon. Then also, removal of the software is very difficult because of the repeat occurrance of this error message – I have had to revert to operating the Windows XP in a ‘fail safe’ mode in order to remove the IM 9.0. I will be watching for a cure to this problem.

I have a laptop running Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium + SP1 + all updates to date. The latest version of Y!M 9 installs perfectly, works alright, except for the fact that whenever i doubleclick a contact’s nickname from the contact list or whenever i receive a message from an on-line contact, the message window does not pop-up on top of any apps i am working under, it just minimizes to the Taskbar, despite the fact that it’s set to “Show the message window”, not “Minimize the message window…”. And another thing: no messages appear on the bottom right of the screen.
All’s fine under Y!M 8.

Glad you guys are still working on YIM. Tried the new build but once I fire up my F5 VPN connection for work, it will not sign back in. Had to downgrade and the older build (2034) works fine.
There are some anoying issues with calling contacts and the Call button not being correct. What I mean by this is sometimes I will be in a call with someone talking away and yet the button will be the Call button like we are not in a call. So in order to hang up I have to close the IM window. Which brings up another suggestions… I often ‘x’ out/close an IM window by mistake and if its one that I’m in a call with someone with, the call of course drops. It would be nice if there was a option to “Warn before closing IM window with active call’.

Please, please, please implement the following feature to Yahoo! Messenger:
*The ability to create custom shortcut keys for every menu item (I am specifically interested in being able to open anyone’s profile with ONE click or 2 simultaneous keystores max, whether I highlight them in a chat room or have a chat window open with them)
*The ability to automatically ignore any messages with links in them and even create filters to be able to ignore messages AND people who send a specific line or so (this will help us reduce spam by ourselves)

download still stops at around 99%. why don’t you just temporarily close the download site or post an advisory.
it sucks!
Comment by tom — January 25, 2009 #
Yeah I already told you I disapprove of the new xxx is typing a message placement.
But another annoying thing about it is that it takes a few seconds after my girlfriend has sent me a message before the “last message receieved on xxx” message shows up. And when it does, the text moves up a bit, which makes me for a second think she’s sent me another message, while she hasn’t. Equally disappointing every time

I can’t click on the mail button to check my mail anymore, it says application not found. It just started to do this.

I am so confused on witch messenger to download, the 9 or its upgrade there are so many people still complaining about it! I liked the old version stile the way it looked and the fact that you could go back and reread the conversation if you forgot something, and that you could buzz the person you talking too! what i didnt like on the old version for vista was the fact that you couldn’t use the web cam! you should of stuck with the way that the old version looked, addeded the webcam and the other new plug ins&call options to it!

I’ve had an ongoing problem with YM 9 and I keep hoping it will be solved with the next build, but it keeps occuring…
After there’s more than 2-3 IM windows open, YM pretty much takes over my PC. CPU utilization is over 98% and nothing else gets done. The hourglass pulses on and off. Sometimes it clears up after a few minutes, and sometimes I have to crash it manually.
Usually, but not always, a new IM window is in the process of being started (opened).
Anyone else experiencing this problem?

I am noticing new builds pretty often now.
Some bugs still remain.
Could you please publish a change log? Could you also please move the ignore list functionality off the client and to the server and make it unlimited?
Thank you.

I am using YM 9.0.0.2123 and there’s no LaunchCAST radio plug-in. Where did it go? The earlier version of YM( (can’t remember what number) was way better except for the error in file transfers, otherwise everything was working perfectly.

Why would you release something with known bugs? Haven’t you heard of quality control?
The call setup assistant hangs now. I can’t make voice calls to my wife overseas! Thanks a lot morons!

HEY! You listenin’ over there?
When.. WHEN.. are we going to get TABBED conversations? You were making promise with Yahoo Messenger for Vista, and then you went and canceled that. Now we’re left with this bloated mess. You guys should think about taking an idea from MSN and seeing how they stream their webcam through their client, because it is infinitely better than yours.

Do one thing…..
Do it well….
Then, move on.
Your programmers are so busy cutting releases, they have lost sight of the goals.

changes are coming in launchcast – therefore, i doubt they will change anything to do with launchcast until the changes are in place – see the link below

well i just talked to a yahoo tech person on online chat.
and they say to upgrade to yahoo 9.0.0.2124.
so i did ,,,it did not fix my plugin issue.
—————
my issues with the 9.0 Launchcast issues and gotten replies from like 7 different people with NO relief… I’m going insane.. and verizon is my Internet provider too.. and they still can’t help! Even though this isn’t a post about that specific plug… MAYBE someone will see it and fix something in a future build. Okay, so i have the latest version of 9.0
——–
I made sure i have all the recent updates installed on both computer and I upgraded there YM to the latest version along with the verizon browser update. After the new YM installed on there computer installed everything loaded everything worked, launchcast loads and lets me play the default stations fine.. …… it lets me click the stations pop up menu and loads the names of the lists (generes, themes, pop, hard rock hip hip soft country, my station), it shows me the arrows next to genres and themes and when you mouse over them thee sub catigories are supposed to pop out, but they don’t. I have to pass my mouse over genres like 3 times to get it to pop out and it lets me select my station, but it won’t let me choose anything from the themes menu and below that. Say I listen to 3 stations under genres (ie pop, christian, dance) but then I want to my station… I have to literally go to my plugins menu, stop the plugin, and restart it so it reloads the 3 default stations!… thats stupid and irritating… ALL the other plugins work.. weather, yahoo 360 etc.. this is the ONLY issue I’m having and it makes me sad because I LOVE you guys!!!! .
–
I know I am NOT the only person having this issue, all my friends, that use either XP SP2 or SP3 are having the same issues.
Maybe your missing something but please someone help.

I have been a Yahoo!IM member since forever, but suddenly when I added a new contact I cannot read when he writes or what I type in the IM text window. I have tried changing my text format, my settings, logging on/off, but I still cannot read what he or I write. It is starting to seriously frustrate me. PLEASE help me.

Hiya Ali,
Try this…
1) uninstall yahoo messenger
2) delete the entire registry key:
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Yahoo\Pager]
3) re-install yahoo messenger
That will usually fix the odd-ball problems

Hello,
More than the localization of the “friend typing notification message”, I would like to speak about the way it is working now:
When a friend is typing, the notification message appears immediately and stays for about 10 sec. It is always working like this.
Even if a friend is typing a long message for about 30sec or more, I can’t see the notification anymore 10 sec after he has started writing.
So I have no notification for the last 20 sec (or more) and I don’t know if he has stopped writing or not.
To make me clear, in fact, the notification message reacts each time as if my friend was typing for only about 10 sec and stop.
I have also notice that my friend needs to totally stop typing on YM for about 7 sec to re-activate the notification message on my windows.
This is far too long!! And it was not working like this with YM8.
My conclusion is that the notification message is not working as well as it was previously.
It is daily annoying to have this doubt when someone is starting to writing you: “Has he stopped writing? Or is he writing me a long message? “
In conclusion: I would prefer no notification at all than a “non accurate one”.
I would be very VERY pleased to have an answer from the Yahoo messenger team about this.
Thanks for all.

Hi, the call forward functionality is not working in Yahoo voice. I uninstalled/installed several times also. Yahoo messenger version is 9.0.0.2162. I contacted Yahoo tech support. They have been trying to fix the issue from past one month. It used to work earlier. Suddenly, it stopped working. Has anyone faced this kind of problem? Please help me.

Hello
I want to ask you to change the location for the typing notification message (“XXXX is typing a message”). It was very nice before, when it appeared under the text box. And a thing that bothered me for a long time was the “show messages from background windows at bottom right of screen” option. It is very annoying that everytime I receive a message it appears in the corner. At the beginning, there was a single message that appeared in the corner of the screen (announcing that a new im window appeared on the taskbar) and it was nicer. I think it is useless making it appear everytime your friend writes a line.
Oh, and about the idea with the archive search. I often thought about how nice it would be to have something like that (when I wanted to see something specific in my archive) and it is frustrating when I want to find something in a very big archive and I can’t and have to look through it for hours to find what I need. I think that many people would like it if there was an archive!

I hate hate HATE how it says so-and-so is typing a message. Put it back at the bottom!! It would be kind of fun if it said fun things like it does in mail, for example, “Whoever should really learn to type with more than two fingers.”
But really, I’d be happy with it being at the bottom again. I like knowing when the last message was sent, and if I sent the last message, the last message notification does not always show up. This update is horrible.
Comment by Amy — June 18, 2009 #
Hate the new placement of the “Last message received” and “x is typing a message”. Especially as the “Last message received” randomly appears some time afterwards, and makes me think they’ve just sent me something! It’s ridiculous. MOVE IT BACK to the bottom left in the status area below where you type. Seriously, who makes these design decisions? At least give us the option to have it the way we want! Don’t just replace things, please! I wonder if I can find the old version before this crap, because this is rubbish.
Comment by Mael — July 20, 2009 #
Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.0.2136 under XP Pro consistently hangs waiting for retrieval of “last message received” time stamp rendering it useless for 15 – 20 seconds at a time. Very very annoying to say the least. Give me back v 8!

7 months with a Friend typing notification which is not working good….
It’s really a pity.
It is funny to read back all the post about that notification.
Many people hate its localization.
I agree that it was better before at the bottom of the window …
But a very few people notice that it has lost its accuracy with this 9.0.0.2112 update.
I have read the answer I sent on this post a few month ago and it is still valid 7 months later!!
PLEASE make this notification working as it was before this update!!!
