Changes to firewall access

November 10, 2008 on 3:46 pm | In News |

If you’re using Yahoo! Messenger 8.1 or earlier and you’re accessing Yahoo! Messenger from behind a firewall, you may see an important message pop up the next time you log in.

To help Yahoo! Messenger run more efficiently, we are making some changes to our servers, specifically those that support access for our users that are behind a firewall (typically those that use Yahoo! Messenger in a corporate environment).

The system message will encourage you to upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0. In about one month, we will be blocking sign in to 8.1 and earlier versions for users that are accessing from behind a firewall. Upgrading to 9.0 will ensure that you can continue to use Yahoo! Messenger.

Yahoo! Messenger for Mac users that are on older versions may also see this warning message. If you do see it, please upgrade to the latest Mac version, available at http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/mac.

Note that we’ll only show the system message to you if you are signing in from behind a firewall. You will continue to see the message until you upgrade to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.

If you’re not signing in from behind a firewall, you will not see this warning. So if you don’t see the system message pop up, don’t worry – that means you are not affected by the change.

  1. Um isn’t a tad bit hasty to do away with yahoo messenger 8.1. yahoo messenger 8.1 by far is stable version. I wonder why would you block previous versions of yahoo messenger. Isn’t a bit like alienating customers and users alike.
I’m a big fan of yahoo messenger. I sure hope things won’t go downhill from there.
People having yahoo messenger is helpful,
Long story short, i remember hearing about that someone had a heart attack and one of his online friends called for ambulance, manage to get to him before a nick of time.

  5. Hi @nis @hmed,

We still support this setting in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 but the menu was changed. To achieve the “No Proxy No Firewall” setting in Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, go to Messenger > Preferences > Connection and select the second radio button entitled “Connect via a proxy server”. Then select “HTTP Proxy” below it. Click OK to save your changes. 6. Sarah,

I’ve tried selecting HTTP Proxy but still have difficulty signing in. I can’t connect from work as I am behind a firewall. 8.x used to allow me to enter the IP address for the HTTP proxy server. We don’t use SOCKS proxy so that doesn’t help.

    Thanks,

    Richard

  7. Hi Richard,

You’ll need to enter the IP address in your Internet Explorer browser settings. Here’s how:

    1) Open IE, go to the Tools menu and select “internet options”

    2) Click on the ‘Connections’ tab

    3) Near the bottom, click the “LAN Settings” button

    4) On the next window, click the “Use a proxy server for your LAN…” checkbox in the second section. Then enter the IP address and port below.

    5) Click OK, then OK again to finish.

    6) Sign out and quit Yahoo! Messenger completely. Then launch it again and try signing back in.

  8. I’m sure your not talking about the mac version as that isn’t near version 9 yet…please confirm that the mac version (and possibly linux version) will continue to work behind a firewall

  9. Well, saw this one coming too.

But that’s alright, because I seldom used it. To anyone having issues with this, just search for some HTTP proxies to use with Messenger and it’ll work fine.

  17. I already have messenger 9.0. Why do I keep getting this from messenger that I need it ?

    Comment by ramsey king — November 12, 2008 #

  18. Thanks for the reply Sarah. I already have that setting on my browser as well as my MSN messanger. I can browse and IM on MSN without problems. Yahoo! IM though keeps saying “Messenger enountered a connection problem. Please check the network connection and then click ‘Try Again’. (81003004)”. I know my login and password are correct so that is not the issue. Selecting Messenger; Connection Preferences gets me to the screen shot posted as part of the response to @nis @hmed and simply selecting the HTTP proxy radio button doesn’t help. Does selecting HTTP proxy detect my proxy IP settings? If so, I don’t think it is able to detect it. In Y!Msg 8.0, I was able to specify the proxy IP address. I can also specify theh proxy IP in MSN IM as well as my browsers (i.e. IE and FF)

  22. I had the YM8.1, I was using it behind my company firewall ad it worked very good; few days ago I got the ’system message’ saying that I must upgrade to YM9 and my 8.1 stopped works (my messages was sent but I didn’t received at all the incoming messages!?). I did install the YM9 but is worst than 8.1 in almost all features: 100Mb instead of 22Mb, the skins are horrible, the computer works slower, freezing the mess windows for seconds…I tried to remove YM9 and reinstall the YM8.1 but didn’t more work…(I’m using WinXP prof, sp2 on an AMD Athlon 1800/1Gb DDRam system which was working excellent with YM8.1). What to do to can use the YM at least in the same conditions like the old YM8.1. Thanks.

  28. I know this is supposed to be a firewall section of the blog, but I have recently re-installed my system (XP Pro SP3) and my webcam now works in YM! 9, but the pictures of the emoticons in an IM box or a chatroom STILL only display properly when I am using YM! in my XP account with admin rights, and NOT in the Limited User account…

Since Microsoft positively recommend ONLY running in an XP User account with Limited rights, to avoid the risk of inadvertantly executing malicious code, it seems a bit daft that Yahoo haven’t solved this one yet…

  29. YM8.1 still works through a properly firewalled local proxy server.

    Comment by Cliff — November 16, 2008 #

  30. Question, does this also include those of us using routers/hardware firewalls? And does 9.0 have the classic skin option back yet? I’ll only upgrade if I can use NO SKINS. (plain window). Sounds like this can be bypassed with a local proxy server. What’s the big change anyways?

  32. Is there anyway to overide the IE proxy setting from within Yahoo Settings. Our company is standard proxy server blocks YM but an alternate proxy server I use to set up with YM 8 works fine. I don’t want to change the standard IE proxy setting (through config script) since the standard proxy is faster for other access. Why did you take away the capability to manually setup http proxy? Is there a workaround? thx.

  33. I for one hate to update to new versions because for some reason, Yahoo seems to think that they know better then I do what I want set for my preferences. Every damn time I have to go back through all the setting and re-set them. Even though I choose NOT to install the Yahell toolbar it installs itself for me. I think this program is more spyware and trojan then anything else, why else would it do all these things. And another thing that really bothers me, I log in INVISIBLE to check messages and people immediately message me. How do they know I’m online unless Yahell wrote backdoors into the code to allow people to see you even though you choose invisible. If there are backdoors for that, what else do they have backdoors for?

  34. The latest yahoo 9 build has a crashing bug when messaging people within my office network. Upon typing two characters (which I assume is when the typing indicator message is sent) my yahoo crashes. However messaging anyone outside the office is absolutely fine.

    Strange no?

  35. Hi Matt,

When you install Yahoo! Messenger, you can choose not to install the Yahoo! Toolbar. On the initial installation screen, click the “Custom” link near the top, then uncheck the Toolbar box before proceeding.

  36. OK. I found at least a workaround for the IE proxy overide. I had to go back all the way down to 9.0.0.922 Beta which still have the 8.1 connection proxy set up. At least for now I can avoid the bugging in 8.1 and go to a 9.0 release. Please don’t annoy user to get off Beta until you have the proxy issue fixed.

    Comment by Loi — November 20, 2008 #

  41. Actually since upgrading to the new version of YM9 I can’t connect anymore. So the great “everything works better with YM9″ message in regards firewall settings is not even remotely true.

My company uses a proxy script and YM9 obviously doesn’t do well with proxy scripts.

  47. I use Pidgin (on Linux) to access Yahoo IM. Needless to say, as of today, it no longer works. Is this something Yahoo plans to work out with the Pidgin developers, or is this going to be like the AOL fiasco of a few years back, where it was a constant struggle to use their service via Gaim? I’d hate to be forced to stop using Yahoo IM because of this.

    Comment by Cliff Wells — November 24, 2008 #

  48. I’ve had the same proxy problems with version 9 as reported here.
However, I’ve managed to identify the problem as being related to NTLM authentication.

I’m friendly with my Windows sysadmins, and we’ve had to set up an NTLM proxy for our linux/unix servers so that they can get automatic system updates without requiring authentication - ie the NTLM proxy has it’s own credentials it uses to get through the real proxy, but doesn’t request credentials of anything connecting to it.

If I setup my Internet Connection (for IE) to use this NTLM proxy, yahoo 9 connects successfully.
If I set it to use the normal proxy that requests authentication, connection fails.

    Hope this helps.

    Comment by Tony Young — December 1, 2008 #

  49. Right.

So explain why when trying to run the download of version 9 from the Yahoo website, it fails with a message telling us that the firewall has interfered with the download - despite having nor firewall engaged. NONE are running at all!

And this doesn’t happen once or twice - but FAR too many times - and not only to myself - but to friends as well.

This sounds like the all too common “server error” message one receives when tying to update contact info - just another internal Yahoo FU that is pushed onto customers that has nothing to do with our system configuration.

  50. The same problem as Mecca ::

I need to override the IE proxy setting.

My company use one proxy server to access the internet, and has all ports shutdown, except HTTP port.

I want to user another proxy ( that is also in our company ), that has YM port open.

I mention that I can not use this second proxy server as IE proxy.

    Comment by CheckMate — December 10, 2008 #

  51. I really don’t like the new Yahoo 9.0

First, I don’t like the fact that I can see anymore for how long has one of my contacts been “Idle”. On the 8.1 version, if there was a short time, me and my friends will buzz each other as we knew we’re not far from PC. Now we cannot do this anymore.

Second, if a person inserts his own “status message” , then you cannot see whether he/she is actually on Idle or on-line.

I like the old version much more. Any way I can uninstall the new Yahoo and re-install the 8.1 version ? The new version really just annoys me and I’ll swith all my contacts to another messenger service soon if things don’t change. It became to be more trouble than fun.

    Comment by Simi — December 13, 2008 #

  52. Ok, I have the same exact problem as everyone else, the 81003004 error. I am trying to use this from Iraq. Before the 8.1 worked great, our cams worked great. Now, nothing. I WANT THIS FIXED. I have done every tweak on my end, jumped through every hoop. It is obviously not my fault. So someone needs to get this fixed. I spent an hour on the livechat going through the same goofy steps, uninstall, reinstall, shut down, ect repeat ad infinitum…..nothing.

Come on people. FIX IT ALREADY.

    Comment by LibrLabrat — December 16, 2008 #

  53. Hi, Sarah,

Sorry I missed your question earlier:

“What issues were you having on the latest version of 9.0 with your proxy settings?”

My company use a centralized complicated automatic configuation script to assign proxy server based on the website to access. However, the default proxy server that get assigned does not work with Yahoo IM. We have an alternative proxy server we can use for IM access but I can you use that for all the server I need access to from IE. Now that Yahoo IM only uses the setting from IE and doesn’t allow overide, I’m stuck.

I being using an old beta (Build 922) to workaround this, but now I realize there are some annoyingissue with the build, e.g. IE script error on cut and paste from IM window. Can you bring back the old connection setup or at least let you choose whether they want to default settings from IE or set up proxy manually?

    Thanks!
