Installing 9.0 on Windows Vista

October 27, 2008 on 5:40 pm | In 9.0 version | 84 Comments

Some of you have left comments on the blog about not being able to download and install Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 on your Windows Vista PCs. Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 does run on Windows Vista and should work fine. To help, I thought I would describe the download and installation process, pointing out some of the trickier parts.

For best results, we recommend downloading and installing Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 while you’re logged in as Administrator on your Windows Vista computer (click here for instructions). This is not a requirement for installing 9.0 but it could help you avoid some obstacles during installation.

After you click the yellow “Download Now” button on the Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 download page, a small Windows dialog box will appear, asking if you want to Run, Save or Cancel the file download. Click Run. Another window will pop up asking if you want to run this software. Click the “Run” button again.

Here’s where it can get a little complicated… Windows Vista uses a security control called “User Account Controls” (UAC), to help ensure that it has your permission to add or run new software on your computer. A few moments after clicking the second “Run” button, your entire screen is dimmed out and a single Windows dialog box appears. The window says “A program needs your permission to continue” and lists the Yahoo! Suite Installer by Yahoo! Inc. Click the “Continue” button to get through this screen and continue with your installation. From there you should see the first screen of the 9.0 installer.

If you aren’t getting to the first screen of the Yahoo! Messenger installer, then your Vista User Account Controls may be interfering with your installation. Try turning off the User Account Control by going to your Control Panel, then selecting “User Accounts”. In the User Accounts window, click the “Turn User Account Control Panel on or off” link and follow the steps (you can always turn it back on after you finish installing Yahoo! Messenger 9.0). After turning it off, close all your internet browser windows, then reopen your browser and try installing Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 again.

After going through the installer screens, you’ll come to a final screen where you can click “Done” and launch Yahoo! Messenger. Note that once Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 launches and you sign in for the first time, you may also receive a Windows Firewall warning. This is your PC’s way of making sure it’s ok for Messenger to connect on your behalf. The firewall notice will have two buttons; click the “Unblock” button to continue. You’ll receive another UAC warning about the firewall; click the Continue button to close it. From there, you’ll be signed in and ready to chat. You won’t receive those warnings the next time you sign in.

Installing Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 will not be exactly the same for every Windows Vista user. Depending on your settings, you may or may not see the UAC and firewall windows. If you’re running into different issues, please describe them in as much detail as possible here on the blog (e.g. step-by-step so we can understand where you’re running into an issue).

Thanks,

Sarah Bacon

actually I’m unable to receive files from someone. It peeves me a bit, I’m hoping that you would reinstate support for yahoo messenger.

  5. Dear Sarah, I don’t give a damn about Yahoo Messenger 9. I just want Yahoo Messenger for Vista back. Why don’t you bother to answer our questions? Don’t u read comments? We mentioned that before we dont want Yahoo Messenger 9. It’s really idiot of management team to stop improving Yahoo Messenger for Vista. Yahoo Messenger 9 doesnt have any good features and really disappointing… I wont ever use that thing. WLM is better now. YM for Vista was great but u sucked it up. Are u happy? I think you don’t have time to deal with Yahoo Messenger… Jeez. Microsoft improves the interface of its messenger with every release but Yahoo stands still. This sucks! Really sucks! YM 9 sucks on Vista. I installed and ewwwwwwww It just freezes. I deleted it immediately. and as u discontinued supporting YM for Vista. Bye for Yahoo forever:) Unless u support YM for Vista again, YM will keep sucking!

  6. hello, I am using Yahoo Messenger 9 with XP Pro SP3 and the 9.0.0.1912 version worked fine, apart from the box in an IM window where you see the emoticons only displayed them all properly in my Administrator account, and not in any Limited User account. Same problem on all three of my networked computers! so when I found there was yet another update available, I ran that, in the hope it would sort this out.

Not only has it NOT sorted it out, but now, my (admittedly) very cheap old webcam no longer works, and I cannot see anyone else’s cam either! and Yahoo Messenger has just ‘encountered a problem’ and closed down, so here I am, logged into my XPUser account with the admin rights, reporting this to you, in the faint hope that someone in Yahoo! will actually FIX the sloppy coding that allows an ‘update’ to break what is otherwise a rather nice product…

  7. need help. i’m having difficulties installing ym9. i have a laptop running on vista and a pc running on xp. after a gazillion tries i succeeded in installing it on my laptop. now when i try to install it on my pc the same problem occurs. while downloading, when it gets to 100 percent an error suddenly pops up saying the the download has been interrupted. i really can’t figure this out. this is the second time that i have to deal with this problem. i tried turning off my firewall and antivirus and all security software but with the same results.

  10. Please for a love of God, bring back YM for vista we need it to share pictures and files. Not to mention to stay connected YM8 was decent messenger, even if had some minor bugs. but dammit we need it
Its how we stay connected to the entire world.

  11. Oh this is great. YM9 works perfectly on vista ultimate for me, but since the last hope of getting a new improved and good looking yahoo mess is gone, what’s left for the users to do? WLM looks great and works great, except for the yahoo compatibility. There is no proper compatibility between yahoo-msn users. In romania most people use yahoo, so therefore even if i would change entirely to wlm, there’s no one to chat to, and chatting in ym9 is kinda looking…old school, obsolete…etc. The only ones really making progress, are linux developers with gaim(now pidgin), amsn, kopete, etc. The only problem there is that there is not good support for file transfers(because yahoo doesn’t botter to share the code), and in kopete, the buddy management is not so good.Maybe it would have been better if Microsoft would’ve bought yahoo. Or even better, if yahoo would have continued ymess for vista, and if they would’ve made a client for linux, or at least share the code…But then again, yahoo doesn’t care much for it’s customers.

  13. people in the north use yahoo messenger a whole lot, lot more than WLP.
It’s easier and plus you can chat with anyone. but alas those were the good old days

  14. Sarah, I’ve actually had the opposite success, than you mentioned in your instructions.

Most of the people having a problem with downloading messenger (any version), is the simple fact that they click RUN, instead of SAVE.

People have all different kinds of internet connections, and if they hit RUN and they have a small disruption in service, it will not install properly.

I’ve told EVERYONE to click on SAVE and install the program directly from their computer instead of from the internet.

  17. Yahoo Messenger 9 keeps crashing on Vista Business when I send files to other people.

It happens in about 20% of cases: it just HANGS and uses 100% of the CPU, so I have to kill the process.

  18. PLEASE BRING BACK YHM 8 THAT WAS THE BEST. YHM 9.0 TAKES TOO LONG TO LOAD THEN IT FREEZES UP AT 99% AND WONT DO ANYTHING.. PLEASE PLEASE I WANT MY 8 BACK PLEASE PLEASE.. 9.0 IS AWFUL FOR US.. THANXS…..

  19. YM9 works great on my Vista mahine. It’s obvious that USER ERROR is the culpret for those who cant get it running.

And by the way…can you PLEASE address the bot issue in the chat rooms again? A while back it was THE hot topic on this blog and measures were taken to fix the problem, but when the Captcha method completely failed – Yahoo decided to just altogether “forget” about it and left everyone in the dust. Surely this topic can be brought up to your superiors & we the users can receive a reply.

    Thank You

I am a Windows user and i have a problem with Yahoo messenger , the display picture is black i tried every method there is to solve the problem , from downloading the messenger all over again to remove and re-install flash player , but it’s still not working and if you search for the problem in Yahoo answers forums you will find many people having the same problem and yet Yahoo didn’t provide a fix for it , i hope Yahoo will fix it as soon as possible because it’s getting frustrating for the user to have problems with something that used to work fine .

  24. Umm … help!? I’m an unfortunate user of Vista. I didn’t have any problems downloading YM9 however, every time I try to launch YM I get an error that says “Yahoo! Messenger has stopped working. A problem caused the program to stop working correclty. Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.” Well needless to say … I haven’t received a solution! So I’ve had to uninstall it and re-install YM8 just so it can function. If this keeps up I may be forced to use MSN only. Because this is getting to be a bit ridiculous. I mean I know VIsta is screwed up in a big way but isn’t this supposed to be your job!?

    Comment by Devyn — October 29, 2008 #

  25. Well, I uninstalled version 9 altogether, but it is interesting to see that giddy1966 in a comment just after my earlier one above, was also having the same problem with displaying the emotes in chat and IM. They showed up OK in the Admin account but not in Limited User accounts on XP, big CLUE to the problem being sloppy code somewhere, and inadequate testing of the product before release.

I went to Freecreed and got the install file for version 8.1.0.0421 and the emotes are fine, and webcam works again, so I regret to say that I shall be staying with version 8 for now. A shame, because the new CAPTCHA for chatrooms was a definite improvement when it came up in the Chatroom window, and so was being able to Ignore everyone not on one’s Friends List but still being able to read typed comments and hear sound from all users in a room under version 9.

  26. I have download the Messenger 9.0.0.2018 and I too have found that the emotes can not be seen in my limited user account. I also find the privacy settings, options and permissions, a little more complex than the original yahoo; on all levels. There are permissions for the home page, permissions for 360, permissions and settings for the avatars… etc. I also found I have to reset my “Seal of protection” every time I sign into my yahoo mail. This anomaly with my “Seal” has just appeared with the recent installation of the new yahoo messenger and only in conjunction with the use of my Firefox browser not IE. It all seems very complex. Yahoo has gone to great lengths to protect their users from identity theft and I thank them. However, I almost feel like I need a user manual….lol!

  28. I’m having the same problem as Bobby up close to the top. I get started opening the program and then it tells me that it has stopped working.

I can’t use the web based becuase my yahoomail is connected to my verizon mail and to keep the verizon mail up it shuts down the yim. I NEED my yim up all day. It’s my business and my way of making money and being in touch with my customers.

PLUS, now I have NO IDEA how to get back to an older version that WILL work. I’m SO upset I did this.

This post is a tad rude considering there are so many of us that can’t use this AT ALL with our computers. I love YIM, I use it every day, well not anymore becuase I can’t get it to start, but it doesn’t make it a great product just becusae YOU can use it fine. Figure out a way that the other 30 of us on here that CAN’T use it CAN and THEN it will be a GREAT product.

    Comment by John Rafic — October 30, 2008 #

  39. whoa there John, if you push too much ideas it would kill yahoo altogether.
moderation is the key. not complete merge of all ID, bit much.
I don’t want to kill yahoo off.
but a clever idea that you ping off the suggestion I posted, but its a bit risky.
what I meant was in the kitchen context, yahoo as the main chef, others are stewing and brewing. and let yahoo team refine or incorporate it.

    Comment by B — October 30, 2008 #

  40. what I meant is a downloadable yahoo messenger for all operating systems win Xp, vista and future win OS, mac OSX, future mac OS, unix, linux.
a unified downloadable yahoo messenger, to keep users happy, more happy users, more people coming to yahoo.
anyways sarah I hope you’re reading this comment. But I’m just throwing ideas and suggestions.
I don’t know how to contact you guys.

plus it would be bonus, i would recommend control.

I hate Messenger 9 and I’d rather have no messenger at all then have that junk installed on my computer. From the steps given in this blog on Sarah must think we’re just plain stupied. THE PROBLEM ISN’T WITH THE USER’S IT’S WITH MESSENGER 9! Please, after all the comments you’d think you could get the messeage!

  43. When I launch YM9 on Vista, my normal hi res screen 1080×760 approx reverts to 64×40approx; like the old days when puters first came out, with gigantic program display icons!!! I have not even logged into the program with my id when this screen jump occurs.

Something is terribly wrong with this version of the software. Screen reverts back to normal when I close the YM9 program.

  44. How come I can’t see the status messages? I know my friend is on his mobile phone, but it doesn’t tell me that anymore. And if they step away from the comptuer, does it no longer tell me if they’re idle after they’ve been away for some time? Before, the icons were different if my friend was on his mobile phone, or if he was idle, etc. Has this feature been disabled for automatic display? Does the other user have to manually set it? Thanks.

  48. VISTA with IE-8- Yahoo Messenger 9 is not and definitely not working at all. Several trial even if you are the admin or not, “Yahoo! Messenger has stopped working” right at the moment you click on the icon to run it, so it’s must be something that either doesn’t work with IE8 or so on… reload Yahoo! ver. 8.x will run but again unstable due to the fact that the network connection is off and on…At first I thought something is terribly wrong with the router or modem… but why not happened with the rest of 6 other PC+ Laptops that we have? so after all this one is the only one with VISTA and try to unload the Yahoo 8.0 for 9.0 I start to realize that the moment version 8 is gone, the internet connection is way much better and stabilized…100%, if install 9.0 on, it’s doesnt work and GOD knows what next with VISTA or my network, but so far for this topic,….just forget Yahoo 9.0…or 8.0 for me… who needs it anyway! Just a note for Yahoo… YAHOO should have been sold to Microsoft…or it gets worst…well I am glad I got rid of all Yahoo stock now !!!!!! Geeezzzzz… YAHOO or MICROHOO? SUCKSSSSSSSSSSS
Let’s go for GOOGLE TALK or MSN Messnger is far better…. Yahoo….or booboo?

Screen reverts back to normal when I close the YM9 program.

    yeah”"

  65. Check you haven’t got Application Compatibility turned on for “YMessenger.exe,” xmizanx, in particular the ‘Force 640×480’ option.

Y!Msgr does not alter screen resolution of desktop at all.

    Ever.

    Check your settings.

  72. I go through all the above steps just fine and it even goes through downloading to 100% but after it sits at 100% for a while I get an error box saying that there was problem and couldnt download it and askes if I want to cancle or retry. I’ve retried numerous times but get the same outcome. I’m on dial up so this process takes a while.

  78. I tried to install YM 9.0 after the one that came with the computer stopped working. At first I tought it might be a firewall of antivirus issue but I already disabled the firewall and even uninstalled the internet security. When I run the installation after I click on next the windows just stays on the screen but it does not do anything.

  82. I think we should also be allowed to use and download the Beta version for Vista. It’s our choice if we don’t want the extra stuff messenger 9 includes but we like the beta more than it

  83. I’ve tried downloading Yahoo Messenger for so many times now but failed miserably. The download went until the bar goes to 100% at the installer screen but after that a dialog box appeared stating that the download was interrupted and then they gave options of abort or retry. When I pressed retry the installer screen went not responding. There was no final screen where I can click ‘Done’. This is frustrating since it has already reached 100% but then it said it was interrupted. I’m currently using Vista Home Premium and my PC is a new one. I wonder what’s the problem. Please help.
