Yahoo! Messenger for Vista version is no longer available

October 24, 2008 on 10:14 am | In News, Vista version | 289 Comments

As of today, Yahoo! Messenger for Vista will no longer be available for download from the Yahoo! Messenger website. We have discontinued stand-alone releases of the Yahoo! Messenger for Vista application in order to focus on delivering one Windows experience that is optimized for all Windows users.

This decision will help us increase efficiencies on our team and deliver one consistent, full-featured product for all of our Windows users. Our application was based on the Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) platform which we will continue to experiment with and invest in. The knowledge we gathered from developing Yahoo! Messenger for Vista will also help us improve future versions of our Windows software.

We realize many of you have been with us from the first launch of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista and we want to thank you for trying it and providing great feedback with each new release.

If you’re using Yahoo! Messenger for Vista, you can continue to use it however we will not add any more features or provide product support. To enjoy full Yahoo! Messenger functionality including photo sharing, webcam and chat rooms, we recommend downloading and installing the latest version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, which also works on Windows Vista:
http://messenger.yahoo.com/download/win

Thanks again for your support of Yahoo! Messenger for Vista. We look forward to receiving your feedback on the new Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 (just go to the Help menu and choose “Send Feedback…”).

  2. I think it’s time for Yahoo! to get a new development team.

  3. Well Yahoo gained a user and a few of friends strickly because you built a groud up for vista and WPF version of your app. I thought the faith and investment in such a product was amazing and it was somthing to be proud of and that other companies could look at and say look at what they (yahoo) are doing and was looking forward to a product with a very bright future

. Well you have just lost at least a few very excited users. As I and a few of my friends who tried and were on the overall very happy switch from yahoo.

THANK YOU FOR TURNING YOUR BACK ON THE USER COMMUNITY.

Now please excuse as I uninstall and go back to the Windows Live messenger Beta.

  4. Must say I am not all that surprised. Yahoo Messenger for Vista was a quite a seperate product which required re-learning of the program. It looked good but it’s usability was diminished by it’s sluggishness and excessive visual effects. Better do one IM at the time and do that one right.

  5. Ultimately Windows Vista killed this awesome Instant Messenger. We must admit it is not Yahoo’s fault, but rather the fault of a a very faulty and second rate operating system.

Vista – Asta la Vista Baby! “Never come back!” I am a Lemon!

How did vista kill a yahoo product that was built for the ground up for vista? your comment makes little sense.

  10. Actually, this move makes sense, as the installer program for Yahoo can be designed to read the windows version, and make whatever specific tweaks that version requires. As long as Windows doesnt radically depart one version to another, that is.

  11. I’m verry disapointed because of this! I use Vista & espect more of Yahoo for this OS. Now, you may provide a download for the latest beta.

  12. I have to admit I am disappointed that this version is being discontinued, especially in light of the fact that v9.0 doesn’t support tabbed conversations. I believe this where Yahoo! should spend it development effort for the future, as well has correcting the windows rendering code that prevents window shadow presentation in windows Vista.

LonelyWho, Listen less to the media and do more research for yourself. I have had less problems with Vista than I did when XP was released. Don’t let the media make do your thinking for you….although Apple likes its sheep.

  14. I personally didnt like the vista version and I do not know what everyone is complaining about since the new messanger works on vista quite well. I have Vista basic and pro on 2 different computers……..and I have not had a single problem with either of them. Other than the typical yahoo stuff that I had with xp.

I really wish and hope that someone at yahoo will read these comments. Cause I am an advid chatter, and I am in the rooms on a regular basis. This Captcha thing they have is useless. It was suppose to block the automated chatters we call bots. Well they are thicker than ever. And sometimes a person can not get into a chat room because the bots are there.

I thought yahoo was suppose to be getting better for chatters. Or are we seeing a future like MSN. How they shut down the chat rooms over there, and now the groups.

I will gladly uninstall the VISTA yahoo and stick to things that you all say will work with Vista and others. Thanks for keeping us updated.

  20. Yahoo probably stopped development on its Vista optimized Messenger because it set its eyes on Windows 7 and its promised simplicity. With that said, I hate those that bashed Vista, almost foaming at the mouth. It makes me doubt their honesty. I have a Vista, and the UAC is annoying, and it takes awhile to boot up, but its a work horse. I have noticed that when I switch back to an XP (at work or using someone else’s computer), XP always, ALWAYS, gives you one error message or failure after another. Have you ever seen an XP shut down with that sound of a critical error? Be honest. Seeing errors when I boot down XP is something I’ve gotten so used to, I hardly notice it. My point–anyone buying a Vista will probably live.

Each time I get one of these messages, I either remove that person from my Messenger or put them on ignore…how idiotic are these people getting when Yahoo just realeased 9.0…no company in their right mind would release new software if they were planning on shutting down…DUH!!!!!!!

  39. I am extremely disappointed of this move. It certainly is the worst move Yahoo! has ever made this year. I admit the Vista version of Yahoo! Messenger is a bit sluggish compared to the 9.0 one, but I do love the theme, especially the tabbed conversation. I really like it. Please reconsider this move, or at least, try to make the 9.0 more similar to Vista version.

And for those who bashed Vista, I don’t think you ever try it yet. Shame on you. Criticizing something that you haven’t personally use yet. It’s by far the most powerful OS I have ever use (not to be compared with Server versions). And btw, I AM a computer power user.

Did someone new come in that doesnt like vista and wanted all development to stop? Please thats just immature. I never had a problem with vista. If people have a problem with vista, then its them for installing older programs and hardware with it..

people that are bashing vista in the comments, stop. Vista is not bad, you your self make your own copy of vista bad….

As for those who didnt like it, , well its mostly yahoo’s falut for not really caring much about it and adding features. I was hoping Yahoo messenger for vista to be fully featured, and ahead of everyone else. Now Yahoo messenger is just the same as everyone else and not worth even using…

  53. For all those griping about the Vista Version being dropped, congratulations! yoiu folks were part of the beta testing experience, and able to provide feedback both good and bad prior to RELEASE version, or a permanent public and supported product. They did NOT say that they were totally abandoning what they learned from the project, and some of those aspects may wind up in future “generic windows” versions. The biggest departure for Vista is the fact MICROSOFT discontinued licensing of the TrueSpeech codec, the key to getting voice chat to work on the pre-V.9.0 Messenger. I wont defend the profile situation with regard to social networking, but THIS change makes sense!

    Comment by Julie West — October 25, 2008 #

  54. WAY before the vista version yes, BUT this is ABOUT yahoo abandoning the USERS of yahoo again and again, NOT about Microsoft and Microsoft was right discontinue licensing of the TrueSpeech codec, an outdated codec, Yahoo had the Beta of Vista and knew about the lack of the codec for well over 4 years, did they update anything before or after the release of vista, NOT for a year. Again it’s about the treatment of the USERS of yahoo…

    Comment by udnhz — October 25, 2008 #

  58. oops, think my response got filtered, but, there would be much to be gained by upgrading to at least Vista Home Premium I cant say it will fix everything in your particular case, but I passed up many laptop bargains because they were set up with basic instead of premium. Search “Vista Versions” to find a comparison. In your control panel, you should have a “Windows Anytime Upgrade” tool, or you may want to search out your own best deal online for the upgrade.. Also check your computer manufacturer for pricing.

    Comment by Julie West — October 25, 2008 #

  59. You could have at least left the download link up. Especially given how you hide the actual download of the installer and only let people download a wrapper file. Since you pulled the download, even people who would want to continue using it will not be able to reinstall it if they ever need to!

I am very disappointed in you, Yahoo.

    Comment by Wes — October 25, 2008 #

  60. Well, I saw this coming. A year after announcement, we had a beta. Six months later, another. Then…. come on, it’s not THAT hard to write a messenger client. Vista did suck, when it was first released, but now it is way better than XP, they have updated the crap out of it. So that’a that , no net to blame vista, and if you want it to be better , then help Microsoft anyway you can to improve vista and don’t let it fade away and not to insult Microsoft and Windows Vista!!

The reason I thought it was a dumb idea was because before you know it Windows 7 will be available and then you’d have to come up with something new. So my opinion is do what you can with version 9.0 in enhancing it, then wait for Windows 7 before coming up with anything new.

  76. Microsoft keeps claiming to come out with new stuff and trying new ideas and stuff. Actually they have kept the exact same formula for everything for years. The time it takes to come out with another service pack. Users are complaining about problems with vista but that are in absolutely no hurry compared to previous sp release times. It stays about the same all the time to release a service pack no change whatsoever. The price of windows and office never change when the latest version comes out it costs just as much as the previous version did when it first came out. They don’t hardly give you any break about the older operating systems price either is stays about the same or may even go up some. Microsoft Office is the exact same way. No change in the prices of new versions just maybe more versions of the new Microsoft Office with slightly different features if any so people will spend more money on thier Office Program. Same thing with windows they are coming out with more Windows Vista Operating Systems just to make more money. That and all of the other many many many many thing Microsoft will do for a quick buck. Or a quick million or billion dollar buck. They give to charity to try and make them out not to be greedy like a lot of rich companies and major corporates would do if they wanted people to think they were nice and cared what the customer thinks. They don’t give a rats ass what the customer thinks. They will keep doing things their way forever as long as their product sells well enough. The new windows 7 I heard has a freaking subscription offer they can jack up the price on and make even more money on their Operating System. The Operating systems aren’t bad or anything they are probably the best or one of the best Operating systems out there except for vista for now. But the don’t care about the customer they care about feeding their pockets with more money and that’s it. This isn’t yahoo so no complaints against yahoo.

OH, and once you run a program installer, you have to let it “run as administrator” in most cases. JUST LET US DOWNLOAD IT! ME ESPECIALLY

    Comment by drt — October 26, 2008 #

  81. Actually, the reason it won’t install is because Yahoo pulled the program from the server. The installer is just a downloader that pulls the actual program from the server. Thanks to Yahoo, anybody who wants to reinstall the program simply CAN’T!

Yahoo does this with every version of Messenger, and every program they make. Why? They want to push that Yahoo Toolbar on everyone, so you can’t download a full installer for just messenger, or widgets or whatever.

If Yahoo was really sincere in letting people continue to run this program, they would offer us a link to the full installer. They don’t have to make a big deal about it. They can scrub mention of YIM for Vista from all sites. Just put the program back on the server, and post a little link in the blog, with a big warning that there’s no support for the program.

Or better yet, open source it so someone else can make improvements. OK, you probably can’t opensource the whole program, but opensource what you can.

  82. well it’s sad enough that i had to use 8.1 cuz the y! messenger for vista was still buggy, now i HAVE to use the 9.0 since yahoo don’t offer the older version…. and because i needed a new computer…

i wonder if yahoo deleted the vista version code from their servers. it’s going to suck if yahoo did because if ppl start complaining enough, they are going to wish they didn’t to restart the project.

personally, if this was a project, they should have just kept it to themselves and not hype up vista users then just let us all down way to go yahoo.

you guys should have just sold out to MSN. at least they don’t scrap what they hype us about… ie: VISTA! it was their worst OS every, they are still standing behind it.

    thanks yahoo!

Please bring this back or at minium put out one more version with all the bug fixes and changes between the previous version and now.

You were building a great new app that did not need to rely on backwards compaitibly meaning the sky was the limit, you could make and addition to the code and not worry about messing with ancient code.

You spent two years on Vista just to say “oh well”. Vista’s popularity is growing as an OS if people like it or not. In a couple more years XP will be retired. Instead of moving forward, Yahoo moves backwards. No shock their profits are in the tank with the rest of the corporation.

  101. It’s a sad reflection on Yahoo! that they felt they had to do this. YM4V was certainly innovative and could have easily been tweaked to work with Windows 7 when it’s finally released.

The approach taken by Yahoo!, is understandable if you believe the line that they want one app which will work across all MS platforms. I don’t. Although they were onto a winner, I believe this decision came about because their finances are hurting right now due to their lower than expected revenue earnings. Reports also abound of a round of staff cuts – on top of the one earlier this year.

C’mon Yahoo! – be honest. Your failure to merge with MS (due to your unreasonable expectations) has hurt you and is likely to continue doing so. Time for some serious changes at board level!

What really needs to happen is for work to stop on other MS OS’s and to concentrate on Vista, using it as a springboard for W7. YM4V was way ahead of anything else available and it reflects badly on the company to finally admit they’ve pulled the plug (development stopped a long time ago didn’t it?) and will also do absolutely nothing for investor confidence.

How many more bad moves are you going make?

  107. Good day, team!

I’ve tried downloading the latest of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.0.2018 on a Vista machine and it said publisher can’t be verified and when I ignored, it gives a long error stating can’t proceed.

Finally, I totally disable all the protection that I am able to disable on this laptop and install using the “download now” button for Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.0.2018 and yet, it stayed idle after 100% downloaded. It stayed at that state for nearly 30 mins and finally a pop-up saying “Download of file had been cancelled or interrupted.” &, I’ve a choice to either click on “retry” or “cancel”.

Knowing what “cancel” button would mean, I’ve clicked on the “retry” button and the same pop-up message saying, “Download of file had been cancelled or interrupted.” &, I’ve a choice to either click on “retry” or “cancel” appears again.

Has there actually been a solution for this matter?

  124. Yahoo Messenger 9.0 DOES run on VISTA! (generic board with Vista Home Premium 32bit.)
    1. “Publisher cant be verified”, YAHOO, fix the digital signatures to comply with MS standards! (shouldnt take more than 10 minutes, except calling MS to find out how)
    2. “When I ignored” if you started the download, “continue anyway”, cancel or ignore interrupt the process
    3. for best results, log in as administrator on your system to download the software, or at least right click on the downloaded file, and select “run as administrator” from the pop up menu. MOST installers need to run as admin to work.
Some security software MAY try to block the installer, so be aware of this.

Yahoo, the diigital signatures of your download package have to be fixed to identify the download as “Yahoo! ” , so rookies wont be scared to download it. If possible, find a way to integrate the UI from the Vista Version into 9.0 as an optional “skin” for Vista Users, that may help. Hats off to you for runnning a thorough BETA test.

    Comment by Andy — October 27, 2008 #

  133. Hmmmmm well I kinda was expecting this as there wasn’t a whole lot of updating on vista beta.

I think it has more to do with the current financial crisis, as yahoo has share holder problems due to the MS deal going south, and now layoffs, so the personal team doing this stuff may have had to be limited to working on keeping one of these things going as messenger is a BIG part of the yahoo brand.

I have Vista version still installed and still working, I also just updated my V8 to the latest V9, both are working on my “VISTA” machine. Even though I would have liked to see a complete for Vista version myself.

As for the vista complaints, get over it, most of these problems are due to people trying to continuously load new software programs on old machines, machines that are built with less power, ram, and video. To run new stuff you will need new hardware, its the way it goes with this stuff. Even this Q6600 with 4 gig PC6400 ram, and a 512 mg video card is starting to age in place. But at this point mt vista machine now runs as smooth as my old XP machine after getting used to it and getting the settings right. Only thing that still bugs me about vista is it won’t let you into certain folders like on XP.

I will hold on to this “old” vista beta messenger for now as it doesn’t conflict with 9, maybe down the road the features will start to migrate and end up making 9.xx look just like beta for vista

  134. Hi,

Please we can’t maximise the messenger window. We can message maximise the conversation window but not the messenger window. This is frustrating. Right now I am being forced to drag horizontally and vertically to maximise the messenger window. And after the window is maximised fully and if I hover the mouse over a contact then the contact details that gets automatically displayed can’t be seen inside the full screen width as they are outside the maximised messenger window. This is frustrating.
    1) We should have the option to maximise the messenger window.
    2) The contact details automatically displayed when we hover over a contact should be seen within the screen size.

Please reply ASAP that you have noted this and that you are working to fix it.

  135. I have two things to say about this. 1. Vista is a great operating system, the only time it has ever messed up on me, is when I have accidently pushed it farther than what my HARDWARE could handle. Or installed something on it that couldn’t run on it yet.
And 2. Yahoo made a serious mistake when they stopped making messenger for Vista. They lost many customers, and made it harder for anyone to believe what they say in the future.
I personally cannot switch from yahoo to something else, even though I already use Gmail too, because I have important things coming to my old emails that I cannot switch over. But if I could, I would sooooooo switch ever to Gmail completely. Yahoo, you have completely lost my respect because of this. I waited almost a year for you guys to complete messenger for Vista. And now you have done this. I hate to say this, but I will no longer open up anymore accounts with you. I will continue to use your services until they are no more, simply because I need to. But I will never make another account. And this is coming from someone who started out with you guys, tried some of the others, hated the others, and came running back to you.

The YM 9 is nowhere near the clean design of its “cousin” and the “missing features” and speed optimizotions could have been ported from the old versions or developed in two months by any decent small or medium software company focusing on this target- … and I do work in this field and own such a company for more than 10 years

  141. I could care less about which OS is better or which version is more compatible. The fact of the matter is I use Vista because that’s what came on the computer that I was given. I didn’t have a choice in the matter, but you don’t look a gift horse in the mouth. That being said, Yahoo has not run right for the last year on this machine, regardless of upgrades that were offered. It locks up frequently and interferes with other processes. Further more, I haven’t been able to even log into a chat room in months because I constantly get “communication problem” messages. I’ve not received any answer about this problem and I’ve good call to believe the same thing is happening to other users. The issue here, as I see it, is simply that Yahoo is slacking, and badly, on all fronts. I feel that a unified version is what they should have been concentrating on all along (having different versions for MAC and PC is too many already), and now we’ve lost a year’s worth of development on a halfbaked Vista version that was shelved anyway. If they could have just let it go with the last version a bit longer, we could have had a 9.0 that worked for everyone, and maybe then they could have started work on individual problems with the system (the various errors and the like).
It’s just frustrating for someone who has used Yahoo for years, as I have, to suddenly have so many problems cropping up and, as I can see it, have no attempt made to fix them.

(since I already know I am correct) I love Y!M9 and have been using it since its Beta stage, I only wish that Y!M had more appearance / aesthetic / customization options, much like Windows Live has that AWESOME feature where you can choose your own color skin. Hoping to see more Messenger updates… and soon, too!

SO, WHY DEVELOP A YAHOO MESSENGER FOR VISTA? NO REASON TO IMPROVE!

  163. The final version of Yahoo Messenger 9 looks horrible in Vista (no glass, no shadow around the windows). Lots of step backwards (like you can longer tell at-a-glance if one of your friends is on Mobile IM). In over 10 years this is the first time I have ever considered dropping Yahoo Messenger as my IM client of choice.

If I didn’t already have so many contacts setup through yahoo already I’d drop you guys in a heartbeat. 166. I heard of a new version of Messenger that was built from scratch just for Vista. Yahoo! What a disapointment! I quit using Messenger about a year ago. No new advancements worth the effort. I only continue to use Messenger to stay in contact with my son-in-law. (Yes, he and I get along very well.) I was excited and looking forward to a new program that would hopfully take advantage of Vista’s capabilities. Messenger has been a disapointment for quite some time, and it looks like it will continue to disapoint the publid.

BTW, I have Vista Ultimate and have not had a single error. Not even a hang up. If you are having trouble with Vista, or feel it’s the worst OS ever, you must not have been using Microsoft with Windows 95, or Windows Millenium was released. It’s not Microsofts fault that you having hardware that is sub-standard or problematic. Beef-up your computer to the new era. It’s not THAT expensive. (P.S. It starts with a killer motherboard.)

version 9 looks awful. using it is like stepping back thru time.

in the long run, i think it is a very stupid decision to discontinue ym-vista.

  170. with all the negative comments and complaints about yahoo dropping messenger for vista I guess you can see it was a bad idea and a lot of people were using and looking forward to a final of this to replace the messenger versions for XP machines. More and more are now using vista, and as windows 7 comes into its own its not much different than vista, all programs that work on vista will work on W7 so a messenger for vista would have been viable for the future.

So maybe all that should have changed is the actual name of the version, since it may cause some confusion as windows versions change name. It may have been better to just call this one Advanced Yahoo Messenger, and V8 and V9 as XP messengers.

The concept and GUI of messenger for vista shouldn’t have been just shelved and older versions put in its place cause of limits, the older XP versions should have been left as they are since they work as well as they are going to on these systems now and shouldn’t need any more updating as it is and the vista version is the one that should have been kept and continued on.

Like I said in my other post, I still have vista messenger installed and still use it, I did however install V9 also just to see what was new , I found nothing new in 9 I didn’t see in 8. BTW I still have the last exe install of vista beta 1.2.1.1046

Maybe yahoo might reconsider in light of so many complaints on this matter. At least it should make yahoo feel good knowing so many are interested in their brand.

  176. This makes lots of sense. We have reverted 5 of our PCs to from Vista to XP. Vista continues to prove to be too clunky, too buggy, and too much of a memory hog. I reverted my Dell laptop to XP just a few weeks ago and am loving it – much faster, much more stable, much better. And I’m running the newest Yahoo Messenger 9.x — it’s great!

BUT – I really, really, dearly want tabbed conversations and even better yet the matrix view you were working on. I chat regularly with many others and this would be simply AWESOME. Are either of these features coming for Windows, and if so, when?

    Thank you!

Yahoo seems to be making alot of choices that aren’t in their best interest! I still Love yahoo because they have the BEST! Webmail interface i even chose to pay for this service. 189. For those of u talking about how Yahoo Messenger 9 does not have tabbed message windows. There are programs that enable that option. Just do searches for them, you are bound to find one that works. Maybe YM tweaker perhaps… I myself will say that the team had a good idea from the start, but many here are correct about vista. I personally dont see how its better than XP. I have witnessed the price per gigabyte of both RAM and hard drives come down fast in the last 2 years, more than likely due to vista being the way it is. Why should a pc have to have 2-4gb of RAM to run just an operating system and a few programs? Why should an OS use 10gb or more hd space to install? Is that not a waste of money that a person paid hard earned cash for the hd?
But then again some inexpirenced users have no idea that vista does that. hmmmm as for windows 7… I am running it right now, and its not too bad. wmp 12 is ok seems like it may use a bit less cpu time and RAM than 11 does. btw 11 is just bad lol. Oh and one last thing about it, UAC can now be turned off very easily, with a slider drag it down and click ok… Off until u restart it… WOW!

    Comment by PhenomAres — November 1, 2008 #

  190. Edit to my last comment. I forgot to mention that UAC actually will stay off permanently until u ‘re-enable’ it.

    Comment by PhenomAres — November 1, 2008 #

  191. Well maybe its not all a loss… perhaps Yahoo can take what progress they made for Messy Vista’s interface and apply it to regular Messenger instead of just updating the same old messenger like they have been doing for years. You know, actually make a brand new product… wait who am i kidding, I am talking about Yahoo here.

    Comment by Foaming Gerbil — November 1, 2008 #

  192. The most galling thing about this announcement is the reason given… that they want to focus on the version that can run on *all* Windows versions. All Windows versions, according to what Yahoo Messenger 9.0 can run on, is Windows XP and Windows Vista.

However, this WPF version of Messenger could have easily run on Windows XP. The WPF components are compatible with Windows XP. All it requires is that you download the .NET Framework 3.0. Given that the installer for YIM 9.0 forces a download not only of Messenger, but of Macromedia Flash and (unless you fiddle with a custom setup) a Yahoo Toolbar, Yahoo obviously has no objection to piggybacking additional software onto its users. Yahoo could have easily made this program “optimized for All Windows Users” but chose not to.

They chose to handicap the runner from the start, and when he didn’t finish the race in time, decided to blame the runner.

    Comment by Wes — November 1, 2008 #

  193. I have to say I am Very Dissapointed with Yahoo in their attempts to make the Messenger program work. Having been with the program from its birth and now watching it slowly struggle to make advances… I wish they would just put it back to the way it was… in days of old.. when we met freinds and put them on our lists. Now… its a hit and miss for any conversation not to mention that chat is completely void to find. Is there any chance I can uninstall the Vista version and go back to the ‘older’ versions of Yahoo Messenger of say 3 yrs ago even thou I have the Vista operating system??

    Comment by BH — November 1, 2008 #

Seems that people do not understand that Vista has never been the problem, its the hardware and software people jackholes and not making the correct drivers, etc. I have it since in beta, never one problem, never one bsod, never. Sounds more like PEBKAC to me. As far as the IM, i could care less, it looked good and all but whats the point if not going to have all the features. Did i read right, people using Vista because of yahoo IM vista, wow…For all real vista users here, don’t worry about the vista haters they are all apple users and starbucks drinks and just really deep inside are pissed because they know they paid way to much for a over priced piece of crap and a overpriced cup of coffee.

This is only a few people who put their time to let you know that they are disappointed, other come to your site and as soon as they find out that version is stopped, they just leave you[yahoo] for your competitors like MSN or GTalk or any other one.

I ask you please to consider your users opinion because yahoo is nothing without its users and community.

  199. I ran XP for years , and because my tower got old , I had to take on Vista , I hated it at first because you could not drive it like XP,( I feel MS were trying to make a system that could not be pirated ), but despite its failings compared with XP , its much much more robust , and I think Yahoo will triumph and come up with a messenger that suits all applications, hang in there guys !!!!

    Comment by Esxman — November 2, 2008 #

  200. I’m disappointed with Yahoo… I extremely appreciated the development of Yahoo Messenger for Vista as a /seperate/ application. The fact that you could run Yahoo 8 or 9 on the computer for one person and YMfV as another app for a second person was great. Plus the tabbed chats, the design, everything about YMfV was amazingly well designed, being built from the ground up.

After the update to 9, I was a little bit disappointed with some of the changes. The main change being the new IM styles; I don’t like having to press ctrl+shift+3 in order to go back to how Yahoo ALWAYS was. I think you should change it only if you choose to; It shouldn’t have a /new/ default…

And Yahoo already messed up with the captcha codes to prevent bots; Bots still get in now. Then the Nickname feature was damaged and wouldn’t show up properly, until 9 was released. Then everything seemed like it was getting better. … Then Yahoo removed profiles of aliases, and pretty much turned the whole ‘profile’ system into something NOBODY will use.

I’m sorry, I’ve been a fan of Yahoo for a really long time. I prefer it over Windows Live because everyone I know is on it… But I would use even AIM over Yahoo if they keep doing “upgrades” like these, which are in all reality, downgrades. :\

The original Yahoo development team, I believe, was scrapped. Most of them wanted the offer from Microsoft to buy out Yahoo to go through, so the development could go majorly uphill. Some genius decided he didn’t want Yahoo and MS to work together and screwed that plan up, and the development team left because they were unhappy with the changes… What’s being done now is the new “development team” are downgrading Yahoo terribly, and eventually Microsoft WILL buy out Yahoo because of how far downhill it’s going. At least we win in the end, right guys?

If there’s no yahoo messenger there would be no users. judging from what has been going on, that yahoo development team doesn’t understands or care that Most people don’t have cable internet connection.

What I like about the standalone yahoo messenger that it can be opened on dial up.
to them we’re nothing more than ants.
But dammit yahoo messenger was a damn decent product. I dunno why yahoo is alienating their base. But I still love the standalone yahoo messenger for vista.

  212. Well, I have to say at the least that I’m disappointed in this decision. I was extremely pleased with the release of Messenger for Vista as it is MUCH more stable on the Vista platform. I have to say that when running Messenger 9.0 on my Vista machine, that I have had instances of it crashing multiple times a week, something that I have not had to deal with on the Messenger for Vista version. I only hope that Yahoo will reverse this decision and continue the further development of the Messenger for Vista version, and I can not see how trying to build on the 9.0 version for Vista could even possibly make for a stable Messenger platform given the number of issues there is already with the interface between Messenger and Vista. I only hope that I don’t have to switch to a different Messenger program because in part to this decision by Yahoo.

Do you even understand the concept of cross link between customer satisfaction and revenues??? I doubt tht u do…. Its time you run yahoo like professionals…. get some advertisers to advertise on yahoo messenger vista and you will get your money out easily…. Think chicken heads…. Think…. I have been a fan of yahoo since ages…. well, it was the first website i logged on to when i sat for the first time on a PC…. dont play with customers buddies… else the customers will start dumping you…. get practical and do something to raise the customer satisfaction of yahoo…. form a strategy to tackle the degrade in customer satisfaction of yahoo customers…. if you dont even know how to do that then its better that you go and take a long leave…. coz if u dont know how to tackle problems then you cant get outta this…. neways, best of luck for your future…. u need it….. especially wen google is on the roll and is eating up ur market share….

  224. Wow! What a bunch of whinners!!! You’d think the world had come to an end. I can’t tell you how many projects I’ve been involved in as a developer that get axed due to budget cuts, cost overruns, and the like.

Yes its too bad that they killed the project, but I’d rather see a project killed than to see a bunch of Code Monkeys lose there jobs and then have to go home and tell their families WHY they lost their jobs.

We’ve been running this economy of the what if’s and possible demands of a client to may or may not spend the money, and seeing as how the messenger is FREE to all of us I don’t think ANYONE has a right to bitch and complain about a cancelled project. Do us all a big favor if you are so gung-ho about it and ask Yahoo for the source and finish it yourself … otherwise STFU and go do something constructive.

  225. Yahoo has lost its accountability and faith of its users. How could Yahoo discontinue a product that finally got people excited! Yahoo has dropped an axe on its own feet. Too bad Yahoo! Good luck as more of your users leave. Long live Windows Live Messenger and Windows Live.

  227. I’ve been a yahoo messanger user for years and have installed the service on the computers of friends and family, but I’m leaving yahoo for good! Like many users other users here are saying YM9 is a step backward and I won’t have it on my computer. It’s bulky, slow and full of bugs! Why you would ever decide to force a messanger like that on us is beyond me. I’ve filled out your survey’s and sent feed back, what for? Why do you even bother with such things if your not going to listen? I thank yahoo for the service they have provided in the past but they are on a decline and unless they are ready to humble themselves and try and understand why people like me are angry, there is little chance of a comeback. Yahoo has not just lost users, they have made enemies with they have treated many of their loyal users. I don’t care what others say, they can stay and stick it out with an archaic messanger like YM9, waiting around for the patches to its numerous problems, but after a painful search I have found a messanger service that meets my needs and I believe is moving into the future.

  228. Look….Yahoo has to make some budget cuts… So its time to re-organize a few things.

(Work on one application) x .(one support group + ( one support group – salaries saved) + (one set of developers x time save colaberating) + (????) = $$$PROFIT$$$

plus it doesn’t help that vista is doing as well as the stocks right now……at least in the tabloids.

  229. I think U got the idea Mayur, now lets see how the “development” of V9 goes,

maybe, just maybe, in time it will actually resemble the one for vista. I hope so, cause XP is going the way of 98, as all OS changes do.

However Windows 7 isn’t all that different from vista, and since it is coming so soon its actually more what should have been another massive SP3 update to vista, so ALL software that runs on vista will run on windows 7 unlike the stuff from XP to vista.

So even V9 will end up having to be redone anyway.

    Comment by HOODY — November 9, 2008 #

  230. I think you got it about right Mayur

I also think that maybe in time this V9 will start to look like the vista messenger, as XP is going the way of 98 and all the other OS that follow. Windows 7 will be so close to vista that it should have been a SP3 update to vista, esp coming out so soon after vista release.

So it would make more sense to build on the vista messenger concept as even the XP users now will end up with a windows 7 OS if they been holding off on vista.

Also ALL software that runs on vista will run on Windows 7, unlike the bs going from XP to vista, so it makes even more sense for yahoo to redo 9 into a vista type messenger.

N again thnx. HOODY….. Buddy u think the way as exactly i do…..

    Comment by Mayur — November 9, 2008 #

  232. This is totally lame. Vista is a really robust operating system and the Vista messenger was the perfect fit for it with all the extra visual impact. Everybody in the software industry is getting more visual and yahoo has demonstrated that they’d prefer to stick themselves in the stone ages rather than adapting to the times. Very quickly after Vista was released, I adapted to it and pretty quickly rid myself of that POS Windows XP. On equal hardware for me, Windows Vista was much much better. Yahoo had better hope Windows XP support gets discontinued much more quickly than advertised and they go back to actually supporting Vista because I completely HATE version 9 and I avoid it at all costs. Just when I was really enjoying it, you had to abandon a good thing.

    Comment by Carl — November 9, 2008 #

  233. Sorry bout that double post, I had no conformation it went through the first time, the mod can remove one
    =====================================

Vista runs just fine with the right hardware folks, some are just too unfamiliar with hardware like memory and video to realize some basic facts. It takes much more of both to run all the latest software, esp with graphic intensive stuff like games and video editing.

It took me a few weeks of re orientating myself on this OS after my XP Pro machine, which I still have here next to my Vista machine, because as stated some items will not work with the Vista OS, in my case my scanner has no vista drivers, so I now keep my XP machine as a stand alone scanner/copier and fax.

The fax because Vista home/premium now doesn’t come with Fax-N-Scan like the business and ultimate versions do, something I hope Microsoft changes in the win7 OS versions.

I have 4gig PC6400 ram @800mhz, and a 750 gig HD with a Nvidia 8600GT 512mg video card on a quad 4 6600 cpu running this vista, and it humms along, My XP Pro machine runs just fine with 2 gig ram, and a 256mg video card, but would be bogged with the vista OS.

So for a lot of people who just buy a PC off shelf, and let the grand kids load it up or even you load it up with new software that an older unit can’t deal with is why vista doesn’t run well on the older machine you “upgraded” from XP to Vista. Best thing is to get a new machine with vista installed in the first place, and don’t skimp out on RAM. If you have motherboard video, remember that the ram you have installed is less because it will be shared by the cpu, so a dedicated video card with at least 512mg is best for vista to make things run smooth.

Only complaint I have with this OS Vista is it has locked the user out of certain folders, which is a security feature but doesn’t make sense to lock out the admin/user of the machine. Oh well

  237. To be honest, the Vista version of Yahoo! was just terrible – I couldn’t download it on my laptop (which is using Vista Home Premium). It would give me a whole bunch of errors – which turned out had nothing to do with MY facilities. Basically, the Vista version was crap and no doubt Yahoo! will fail us once more with the 9. version -.-

    EPIC FAIL!

    Comment by Emma — November 12, 2008 #

  238. dono what your problem is/was with either version, I have BOTH installed on my system, also vista Home Premium, and BOTH work.

Whom ever is left at this yahoo messenger team should still start to redo 9 and morph it into a more vista like version. Although things may be a bit dicey in the next months with all the layoffs.

Its the only solution I see to get this thing back on track.

    Comment by Jim — November 13, 2008 #

  242. Windows Vista sucks first of all. Whoever thought of this idea and got rich off of it is brilliant! Its almost as if they went back in time and made things worse! Yahoo … I can’t believe since I’ve had this computer – that I had so many problems with Messenger. I would’ve gone to another messaging system had I not had so many friends that were on here. But! I am happy to say that Version 9 does work – and works well with MY Windows Vista. Why on the Beta Version for Vista would you have a web cam installed / already came on the computer and not have it be able to function? That blew me away. I will use Yahoo Messenger – but only because it works with Vista – hopefully it won’t change again – and I lose everything I had on my other version. Its amazing there are people at your company that get paid to do this and have it fail so miserably! I was actually so upset it didn’t work – that I was ready to call friends and tell them to trash Yahoo Messenger also…and theirs worked ok. I say just leave well enough alone.

    Comment by Joy — November 15, 2008 #

  243. Stop complaining about Vista already!
This version was NOT built for Vista, but for WPF instead(yeah, you can also run it form XP). So if they had done it right, it would run beautiful on the upcoming Windows7. My take is just they didn’t had good WPF developers, and let’s be real, we are not talking about a small company
    Shame on you Yahoo!

  244. Good greif, I liked the look of the interface in the vista version. Now I have to put up with messenger 9, which is ugly as hell. All the skins look ugly and there is not an option to use the default system theme as a skin, as there was with other versions of messenger.

Yahoo, I dont know what you are playing at, but really you just suck anf just shot yourself in the foot big time.

Now I have a crappy and annoying looking messenger.

    Comment by operationoverlord — November 16, 2008 #

  245. if you want to keep using the vista beta you can just reinstall it along with the 9, they both will run as each is installed in its own folder and doesn’t mix.

I already said I have BOTH running on my “VISTA” system and they both work. one at a time of course, smirks.

and all this cryin bout vista, man, if your using XP and someone cry’s to you about win95 not working with stuff what you think?, smirks

  246. lol, a lot of these post makes me laugh. I really liked the Vista version of yahoo messenger. I was dissappointed in the program being taken away where you can no longer download it. I really hope they bring it back.
As for the ones that don’t like vista. They don’t like it either because they don’t know much about computers (OS), or they are the people that don’t like change. I like vista even over XP. But for the ones that don’t like vista, they may as well get use to it, because soon you won’t be able to find a computer with XP on it, or the XP program.

    Comment by Blackberry — November 17, 2008 #

  247. Yahoo 9 sucks as bad as Yahoo 8. It sucks so bad, I actually moved my yahoo contacts to Live Messenger and just installed all yahoo IM versions I had altogether.

YIM Vista had bugs and I was hoping for a fix for that ridiculous CPU usage, and yeah, it wasn’t THAT usable, but it was good looking, with good enough innovations for a yahoo messenger, and it seemed to actually HAVE a future, unlike crappy version 9. Oh well, guess yahoo is really going down. Yahoo SHOULD have discontinued a messenger version already, but that’s ver. 9, not the Vista version.

And btw, Vista is a good OS, obviously not perfect but still an improvement over XP. That some morons think all new OSes must run fast on their ancient hardware is retarded. Go back to your 286 and leave the contemporary hardware and OSes to the rest of us. Oh yeah, I bet you were fretting about DOS being bloated, too… And for anyone who thinks UAC sucks, go enter your password EVERY F TIME you need to make a system-wide change in a linux distro, or be the usual retard and have linux remember your password and leave it more open than your usual Windows installation.

I was one of the first to sign up for the yahoo messenger for vista and have loved the appearance. Then we all waited and waited and waited and waited for a downloadable beta.. a entire year later we finally got the email to say it was ready for download and a year after that im reading that its been discontinued???

  259. I am a professional Video producer. I will probably be able to avoid using vista for another 2 years, as the likelyhood is high that attempting to “Upgrade” to vista pro would trash my high end dual xeon workstation & would call for thousands of dollars in new “vista compatible” software upgrades. Most of my software providers are continuing to make their upgrades Both Vista & “XP” compatible for a reason. (i.e. Professionals like myself.) I am sure that there are many non-professional & dilettante users of vista who have had perfectly satisfactory experiences with Vista. I am also happy with my Yahoo services, although I DO wish that the ‘ Classic-windows-Boring’ interface would be made available again – As I use YMessenger in a professional environment and the “Crayolla Crayon” interface is embarrasing to use when clients are around. ( Although it’s fine for folks who mistake ‘wretched excess’ for ‘quality’ in visual presentations…)
