Bye bye Beta – Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 launches

September 23, 2008 on 4:37 pm | In 9.0 version | 190 Comments

Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 has officially launched as our newest version for Windows XP and Vista. If you’ve been following along and trying our Beta versions, here’s a quick list of what’s new in this final release:

- Pingbox™: Introducing Yahoo! Messenger Pingbox, a new application that once embedded into your blog, website or social network page, lets visitors IM you anonymously (or they can identify themselves) without needing to download or even sign into Yahoo! Messenger. The good news is you’re anonymous too; visitors to your page never see your Yahoo! ID. Pingbox is great for giving your site/page/profile visitors a quick way to chat with you. I’ll do a full post on Pingbox later but in the meantime, go create your own custom Pingbox.

- New skins: Three new skins (Silver, Ruby Red, Mystic Black) bring the total count to twelve.

- Return of the (original) emoticons: Based on a ton of feedback from users, we politely escorted the larger emoticons from the premises and brought back the smaller, original designs.

- Ignore list enhancements: This feature had become a litte buggy, so we fixed it in this release. The “ignore anyone not on my Messenger List” option won’t affect messages when you’re in a chat room, but it continues to apply to IMs.

If you’re brand new to Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, here’s a list of all the other great features it offers:

- Inline video & picture viewer: When a friend sends you a video link from a site like YouTube or a link to an online photo, they will show up right in your IM conversation. For videos, a full player appears; just click the play button to watch it right it in your IM window.

- New emoticons inspired by our users: Last summer we held a contest inviting our users to submit ideas for new emoticons. Six of them made the cut: thumbs up, thumbs down, “It wasn’t me!”, hurry up, rock on!, and “Don’t want to see!!”.

- Import Contacts wizard: Add friends to your Yahoo! Messenger contact list from address books you have on other online services like Gmail, AOL, Hotmail, Orkut…over twenty services in all.

- Yahoo! Updates: Keep up with your friends by checking their updates alongside their names in your contact list. If they Buzz up a story, update their profile on MyBlogLog or change their Avatar, you’ll know about it.

- Call forwarding & new voicemail delivery: Now you can forward incoming calls from Yahoo! Messenger to your mobile or regular phone (Phone Out account required). We’ve reworked voicemail too; new voicemails are delivered as MP3 attachments to the email address you specify.

- Yahoo! Games are back: Just click the “Activities” button in the IM window to choose a game to play with a friend. Toki Toki Boom anyone?

- Changes to the look and feel: In addition to new features, we also reworked the status message menu, making it easier to share custom messages and web links. We also added two views for your contact list – detailed (larger display images, full status with updates) or compact (smaller images, one-line name and status). To change the contact list view, click the menu button to the right of the contact search bar.

Thanks to all the users who participated in the 9.0 Beta program. Your feedback was invaluable in helping us fix bugs and improve the product. But don’t stop now – we still want to hear your feedback! Stop by our feedback form anytime to let us know your thoughts on this final version of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0.

  12. Quote “-Add Insert “Characters” with Characters Box (For special characters, see ascii char map)”
**The easiest way to do this is to add a button (next to the Buzz or somewhere) that access the Character Map Application on your computer.**

  13. Also need a “My Inbox” with Number of Mails in the Messenger Menu. (That way you can access your mail even if there is no new mail)
“Check For updates” needs to be a feature that can be set to automatically check once signed in (be able to set it for so many days)
Doesn’t require a web browser for update…checks it from messenger and downloads new version if available.

  28. Here’s my list of infamous bugs/issues I’ve found so far.

    1. The size of the text input area in instant messages isn’t saved.
    2. There is no way to turn off the Messenger tips (in the IM windows) in Messenger, other than a registry key from the v8.1.0.421 build.
    3. My Profiles has been removed for unknown reasons. This needs to be added back.
    4. Cannot perform : chat emotes in chats anymore.
    5. Taskbar flashing for new messages received in chats don’t work anymore (hasn’t worked since v7.0).
    6. Horizontal scrollbar still appears in the chat room user list if you minimize and restore the window (has for a long, long time now).
    7. When you sign out on Windows Vista, there seems to be a lag before being signed out.

    Comment by Venom — September 24, 2008 #

  29. I’m glad that you guys thought of something like the PingBox. This is a step in the right direction because more internet users are interested in web based technologies now a days than desktop software programs. Especially when it comes to chatting.

If this thing goes along nicely maybe you could start web conferences for people just like they can chat with the PingBox.

  32. You can put the newer smileys from the beta back in yourself.

As for microsoft, they actually make their messenger look good, check out windows live messenger 2009 lately?

If you ask me Y! Messenger 9.0 is just a tweak on 8.1 as its just as ugly and they are focusing on the slow WPF vista version.

  34. Can you make the fonts a bit more readable? I mean white text on a light background? Very Light grey text?

Please understand that your users are all not young people. The readability has taken a major hit. At least give us the option of disabling the theme and picking up the system colors.

  35. I’ve only tested Yahoo! PingBox briefly but it doesn’t seem to keep track of any user sessions. I’ve placed the box on every page of my website. It’s all over.. But it seems to make a new user of me with every page that I join. And logs out other users after a while.

Should keep track of sessions for the same users. I wonder if it’s possible with Flash!

  44. To those users running XP SP2/SP3 or Vista and unable to download the new version: Check your Data Execution Prevention settings. Sometimes this causes an error that is falsely reported to by a firewall issue by Yahoo and other programs. 58. First of all, Hello. Yahoo has disapointed me! I have a MAJOR problem. How to start? I got this problem from the 9.0 Beta version. I thought that this was a bug and that this will disappear with the final version.
So, I install the 9.0! I double click on the shortcut. The aplication is starting slowly after 1 minute. It’s like I have loss. And at 1-2 minutes yahoo messenger is blocking and i got the “Not Responding” message. I have to wait 10-15 seconds for yahoo to work again. I got this error at 1-2 minutes again and again. This means that I can’t use the 9.0! It’s very hard and frustrating. I don’t have this problem with the 8.1 or other version. I installed, reinstalled, deleted the directory, everything, and I still got the problem. I searched on the internet and i found more persons with the same problem. Now i’m very calm, but yesterday i wasn’t. I can’t belive that Yahoo doesen’t now about this major bug…or they now ?!
The thing is that i love the 9.0 version and i’m tired of the 8.1! I’m using Yahoo Messenger for 4 years. Now, am I doomed not to use the 9.0?

I use Windows XP SP2, without firewall. I’m connected to a wirless router. I use ESET Nod32 Antivirus. I have a high end pc with a 10 mbps internet connection. I will provide yahoo with all the informations they want, if they want to help me! I tried Yahoo Costumer Care and i’ve reported the problem to yahoo, but still no answer. I hope, that someone will read this comment, and that someone will help me! I hope that yahoo care’s about their costumers…

Thank you! And sorry for my english mistakes.

  68. Another shocking release, why where none of the bugs I reported both here and through the official methods fixed?

    1) On chat screen, text properties always defaults open.
    2) You can’t scroll up to repost a previous message should it have been lost.
    3) :s and :-s should be equivalent smileys, but :s posts the smiley.
    4) Prefixing your post with “:” does not cause an emote.
    5) STILL the “/help” text is incorrect.

    Some new bugs:

    1) The chat room font is forgotten and must be set each time you start chat.
    2) The font may be forgotten even during a chat session

I really like the new interface and controls, but as long as it’s unstable and could damage my ramms, i’m afraid i don’t see how i can be of use to me. Hope this will get fixed soon, till then… good old 8 version! Cheers.

  84. Please make a new version that allows you to choose the installation directory of where Yahoo Messenger installs in the installation setup…this will allow you to install and run different versions of Yahoo Messenger, in case you don’t want to install newer versions in place of older ones. (Some people like using 8.1 but would like to test 9.0, but don’t want to install 9.0 over 8.1 so that if they don’t like 9.0, they won’t have to redownload and reinstall 8.1)…Also, When downloading Yahoo Messenger, it would be better if the Download File was the Full application package and not just a small install file. So you can save the installation file on your computer if you ever need to reinstall it without having to redownload it)

  86. Need a way to go to Next Line…Pressing “Enter” sends the message, but if I want to type “Hi” on first line, then something on the next…How do I do this? Should make “Enter” go to the next line and “Tab+Enter” to Send. Of course people who are used to it being “Enter” for Send might complain if you change it…so allow this setting to be adjusted in the Preferences.

  115. I installed the beta version long ago which gave me a lot of troubles and I moved back to the stable version. Then I download and installed now and eventually facing the same problems as with beta, I basically loved its voice functions and after installing 9.0 PC to PC calls is just crap and nothing else so much disturbance and continous “Connecting to Voice server” and nothing else more over “Open Talk” feature is gone which was a very nice feature and for which I was expecting that the status will remain “Open Talk” when yahoo reconnects after some network problems (I mean auto reconnects) but that feature is made unavailable for unknown reasons which is really unbelieveable. I just uninstalled new Yahoo Messenger 9 and installed the old one as the new one is total crap, I dont think the new funcionalities or the skins are basically required for any software but the back-end functionality is the key reason for a software to let their customers stay with them and Yahoo Messenger 8 was the best for that reason.

Hoping for the better release of further versions. There are a lots of other features which a lots of users including me.

I had tried & re-tried a number of times yet I’ll receive a similar error message saying that the download was disrupted and I was given a choice to either “retry” or “cancel” the download. It couldn’t get pass 25% even though default firewall was not working.

I’ve also tried disabling “Norton Internet Security 2009″ and the furthest it went was 85% before popping up the error message but this time it continues up to 95% before it permanently stops.

May I get any support in this matter to enable a successful installation of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0, please?

Unless there’s an alternative installation method (e.g. aside from using Internet installation – i.e. run an install while downloading).

  144. Bug: Messenger constantly re-enables the open/close window animation in Windows. Very ungood.

No native Windows skin? I’m supposed to use this childish glossy … stuff? Uhm, no.

Gawd, where to start… this is such a huge step backwards in ergonomics and useability. So many small and big things were removed or changed that worked perfectly fine before.

So many chances missed too, so many things still unfixed or unimplemented that have been criticized and suggested for *years*, over and over again. And you claim to listen to your users? Sorry if I laugh.

Well really, sorry but no, I’m not going to use this. The scarce improvements and new little featurelets nowhere near make up for the many old and new negative aspects and bugs. This is like a bulky broken toy made of pink plastic. Back to version 8.

  151. Delivery of voicemail messages by email is stupid:
    1. It is not private. The messages are sent as MP3 files through Internet where they can be captured by anyone with enought skills. Makes phone tapping available to anyone.
    2. It requires addional steps in reading a voicemail message for Phone Out/In users. A user that has Phone In service keeps his Messenger opened all the time. If he needs additional tools and steps to listen to a voicemail message he shouldn’t be forced to use another application to open email and then start the OS default media player to listen the voicemail messages. Brainless service design!

  157. Not a fan, personally. I’m going back to 8.

    My concerns:

-Is there a way to turn off that annoying popup whenever someone is IM-ing me? I can’t find the option, if there is one.

-Can’t stand how it lumps multiple replies from the same user under one reply. What’s wrong with separate replies?

It’d be great if we had an more display options, kthanks.

I’m being nitpicky, yes, but I used YIM because it didn’t do these things, it wasn’t overly “bubbly”, and annoying options were easily turned off. Bah.

  158. Hi svmartin,

Yes, you can turn off the background IM message toast that appears. Go into the Messenger menu > Preferences > Messages > Uncheck the third box in the first section that starts with “Show messages from background windows”. If you’re looking to turn off all IM notifications, check out the Messenger menu > Preferences > Alerts & Sounds section.

As for how your conversation is formatted in the IM window, see this blog article for some helpful tips on changing it:

  159. I just downloaded the newest version of 9.0 which is build 9.0.0.2018 from the old 8.1 and the only thing that is not working right is the Launchcast plug in. When i click “All Stations” the all stations screen pops up but when i try to click on one of the stations in that screen with my arrow it will not work. The “Genres” one will sort of work if i run my arrow real slow to the very top of that station but the ones under that such as “Themes” will not work. The three stations that do appear on the launchcast plug right above the “All Stations” do work so my question is how do i fix this? I did not have this issue with the previous bulid 8.1.0.421. Thanks.

  160. ALL I want is a version that ACTUALLY works in XP with Service Pack 2 or 3, when using the webcam!!!

Yahoo + webcam works great in XP PRO, but the moment you install SP2 or SP3 and THEN try to use Yahoo plus a webcam, ANY webcam…. Yahoo locks up so hard that even CTRL + ALT + DEL doesn’t even work to close it out.

Your only option is to manually shut down the pc, and this is with a CLEAN install of XP…

I know you work hard on yahoo, thanks for listening!!!

I do miss my webcam, haha!!! Also, why did you turn off all profiles unless someone is in your list? Some people WANT public profiles…

    Please add it back, thanks!

  162. Please bring back the larger emoticons, I really liked it from the beta. Or at least give the users an option to switch from the two. They were way cuter than the small ones IMO.

  164. Does pingbox only work with Flash 9?

The ping box just doesn’t show up when I try to access a page with the pingbox embedded using a machine with Flash 7, 8 or 10!

  165. Hi leon,

Yes, Pingbox requires Flash version 9.0.124 or later. Thanks,

  166. Is there any ways to turn off the crazy pop-up alert at right bottom from the second message of someone?
In previous BETA version (and maybe in previous version too), only the first message has a pop-up at right bottom.. It was good because from the very start you’ll know if you need to catch up that conversation, and when you decide to catch up taht conversation, you don’t need to be alerted about further messages.
But now, it keeps popping up all the time. Really annoying!
It’s better to have an option (first message only or all messages).. I even want to have only one option – first message only..

  167. I have Flash 10.0.12.36 plug-in associated with all my browsers except for Flock which came with 9.0 r124

Here’s what happens on my Windows XP Professional with Service Pack 2 machine:

IE 7.0.5730.13 – Pingbox always shows normally

Chrome 0.3.154.9 – Pingbox always shows normally

Firefox 3.0.3 – Pingbox SOMETIMES shows normally, but USUALLY doesn’t appear at all.

Opera 9.62 – Pingbox does not show up at all.

Flock 2.0 – Pingbox does not show up at all.

Any clues as to why this might be happening?

  168. I know you can only devote time to so many projects but Linux support would be so appreciated. The web page just isn’t a real option for many of us. Pidgin is a good workaround but the features are minimal. If I have to give up either Linux or Yahoo it isn’t going to be Linux that goes away. Vista is so bad even my wife is considering given up on windows.

I find that once I have done an initial logon ( I dont have it start automatically) and have then logged out of IM I am then unable to log back in without having to reboot my PC. I cannot click on the tray icon and start it again nor am I able to start it from the main start menu on my PC. Its a pain in the ass Im not sure if it is a Yahoo issue or a PC issue.

    Any suggestions

  174. Massive problem with the new Messenger. Ity appears that if you have a blog account with mybloglog, then automatically, without your knowledge, your blog feed will appear in your friends listings. NOT SO KEWL!

Hey Yahoo… ever think that MAYBE we have PERSONAL blogs yet use messenger for WORK? You have to have the ability to block that feed 100%.

I would not suggest people download this at all. I am considering dropping my yahoo account for this reason. Way too dangerous. People are already losing their jobs and Yahoo is gonna put some people out of work without that person even knowing why!@

  179. To FULLY disable the stupid reactivation of “Animate window when minimizing and maximizing” which Yahoo 9 keeps enabling, open regedit and go to

    HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\VisualEffects\AnimateMinMax

and add the following DWORD value: CheckedValue
It will be set to zero by default. That is just perfect.

Now minimize Yahoo. Voila! By the way, the minimize animation is only enabled when you minimize any yahoo window (main or chat). This fixes this malware behaviour. I sure hope Yahoo fixes this bloody issue.

    Adrian

  180. My bad, it doesn’t if you click on the minimize button. However, changing the setting from Windows’s settings won’t have any effect. Looks like Yahoo is using an internal Windows function, rather than changing the registry…

I’ll dig some more and find a patch

    Sorry,
    Adrian

    Comment by Adrian Caramaliu — November 23, 2008 #

  181. Huh, I’ve found a workaround, not the best patch though.
    Using a hex editor, open yui.dll in C:\Program Files\Yahoo Messenger\Messenger folder. I recommend xvi32

Look for YbSkin_WM_ANIMATEWINDOW (be aware this is in Unicode UTF16 so there 00 bytes between each characters. In xvi32, when searching, check the “as Unicode Latin (UTF-16LE)”) When you find that, just change any letter to something else. I changed ANIMATE to XNIMATE.

Also, look for minimizebutton (same 00 rule applies) and change the first m to x (do note there’s a dialog_minimizebutton as well, leave that alone). This can be changed in the Theme.xml as well, but since you’re at it…

The effect is going to be:
    1. there is no minimize button on any yahoo windows, hence you won’t click the minimize button by mistake
    2. when you use the taskbar’s right click and minimize, the animation won’t be activated)

Effectively, there’s no chance for the user to do anything (that I am aware of) to accidentaly enable window animation

I am still looking for a way to disable the actual animation rather than removing the minimize button and sorts.

    Regards,
    Adrian

    Comment by joe kane — December 16, 2008 #

  185. Hi Joe,

You can remove someone from your ignore list. In 9.0, go to the Messenger menu, then to Preferences. On the left side, click on Ignore List. This will show you the list of IDs on your list and you can remove the one you want.
