oneConnect: Yahoo! Messenger for the iPhone (and a whole lot more)

September 10, 2008 on 11:19 am | In Mobile |

Yahoo! OneConnect application for the iPhoneToday, Yahoo! OneConnect launched for the Apple iPhone. Built by the mobile team at Yahoo!, oneConnect is designed to help you communicate with not only your Yahoo! Messenger friends, but also the friends you have on social networks like Facebook, Flickr, MySpace, Youtube, Bebo, Dopplr, Friendster and Twitter.

Here’s a quick rundown of oneConnect’s top features:

Full address book
oneConnect integrates contacts from your Yahoo! Address Book, iPhone, and many social networks. To add social networks to your oneConnect, tap on the “Settings” icon at the bottom, then hit “My Accounts”. Once you’ve added a social network account, oneConnect will import all your contacts. Tap on the “Contacts” icon in the bottom bar to access them.

Send and receive instant messages, SMS
Once you sign in with your Yahoo! ID, your entire Yahoo! Messenger contact list will appear. Just tap on the “Message” icon in the bottom bar, then tap the “+” in the upper right corner to start a new IM (or start one from a friend’s listing under “Contacts”). You can insert your favorite emoticons into your conversation and you’ll see your Avatar or display image as well as your friend’s.

When you’re messaging, you’ll notice a “Y!” icon to the left of the text box. Tap on that and it changes to an SMS icon. When you want to send a SMS message, make sure the SMS icon appears there and just start typing. Note that you must have the mobile phone number for your friend already entered into their contact info. To go back to sending IMs, tap on the icon again to bring up the Y! icon.

Updates from your friends (Pulse)
In addition to IMs and SMS text messages, you can keep up with what your friends are doing on your favorite social networks. Tap on the Pulse icon to see a running list of updates from your friends. See the latest photos from your Flickr friends, get status updates from your Facebook contacts, or see what your Twitter buddies have to say. Different views let you look at all updates together, just status updates or just photo updates.

Yahoo! oneConnect navigation barYou can also update your own status on your social networks from oneConnect. When you’re in the Pulse area, tap the “My Status” button in the upper right corner. Enter a new status message and it gets sent out too all of your networks at once.

Yahoo! oneConnect is available for free from the Yahoo! Mobile website. To install it, click the “Get Yahoo! oneConnect” button on the page to access the oneConnect listing in the App Store on iTunes (or click here to launch it immediately in iTunes). It works on all versions of the iPhone.

Try it out and let us know what you think here on the blog or on the oneConnect Suggestion Board.

  4. Looking good so far, but I was disappointed to see that when I updated my Twitter status, it didn’t say “from oneConnect.” http://twitter.com/jeffhester/statuses/917283923

  6. Initial feedback:

A trifle disappointed on the icon on the home screen.. not Yahoo! at all.

Since you’ve integrated other social networking products in pulse, why not include gtalk, aol , msn (for those who havent used the interoperability feature)
I use IMplus on the iphone and the best part of that is that I have just one app for all my IM conversations..

Any options for multiple Y! mail account users.. as in can i sync in contacts of my other yahoo mail account?

  10. I wish you guys would get rid of the gloss in the icon, it’s downright tool-y and annoying. That’s my minor complaint about an otherwise great iPhone app. Remove the gloss in the next version, please?

  14. Why is this not available in india???
So not fair, always the last people get stuff

  15. Hi guys!

It’s great you took the time and designed such a versatile app.
But I have to admit all I wanted was a very beautiful, yet simple and fast Y! Messenger for the iPhone that would later support push. This whole oneConnect thing basically dilutes the Y! functionality and brand and shows a lack of focus in your strategy.

Kudos for trying to serve all those services in one, but I do Twitter via Twitterrific, Facebook via Facebook.app and I expect Y! IM to be just that too. Keeping everything in its own basked makes great user experience and good business.

i’ll pay $2.99 for Yahoo! Messenger for iPhone, even if you guys will release it free. alas, will uninstall oneConnect though.

    keep it up,

  24. OneConnect is not on the Singapore iTunes App Store. Any other place to get it from? Or waiting for beta to finish? If so, when will real release be?

    Comment by Barney — October 28, 2008 #

  25. I am an avid MAC user and prefer just regular yahoo messenger for the iPhone. I use yahoo messenger more than I do any other app. I dont like having to use a second or third party to use it, but hey I gotta do what I gotta do. Please develop a yahoo messenger app exclusively for the iPhone. Thanks guys.

  28. when it will be available in the uk?

    Comment by robert — February 5, 2009 #

  29. Um………….if you could stay logged in like yahoo messenger works on other phones it would be great. Now, it’s kind of pointless unless you are just going to stay in the one app and not do anything else with your iphone! I am so disappointed!!!!!!!!!! Why not just make a simple Y! Messenger? Just simple…………..sometimes less is more

  30. I have had my iPhone for a week now. I like most of it but the Yahoo IM, the lack of being able to add my music I have as a ring tone, no MMS what the hell, and the small touch keys for the messenger keyboard is making me want my Blackberry back. I’m really thinking about going back to Blackberry. I wish it worked the way it should. I’m surprised at the lack of functionality and how hard it is to type on the iPhone compared to the Blackberry… sad very sad.
