Knock knock – you have an IM

August 12, 2008 on 10:34 am | In Fun Stuff | 17 Comments

Cruising around Gizmodo the other day, I came across a unique device called the i-Knock. It’s a personal instant messaging notifier that provides audible and visual alerts when a new IM message arrives on your computer.

A creature, reminiscent of a teletubby, is attached to your computer via USB. When you receive a new IM message, the figure whacks itself on the head with a hammer to make a knocking noise. It also plays a MP3 sound which you can customize per contact if you want.

The i-Knock also has special alerts for a number of emoticons. So when someone sends you a laughing emoticon, your i-Knock buddy will laugh along with you.

Here’s a short video I found showing how it works:

The product page doesn’t have any details about how to purchase the i-Knock, but judging by the videos on YouTube, it’s been available overseas for at least a year. So perhaps you’ll see it soon at a gadget store near you.

  2. The idea sounds great, but after seeing the video and how stupid the toy actually, I’m not interested. Anyway, nice work.

  3. I was excited about this until I arrived at the youtube video. The voice is annoying and although the idea itself sounds interesting, it’s cheesy at best.

  7. This would be highly annoying. Unless you could get a different sound clip for the lil bugger. It’s just as annoying as the “Buzz!!” in Yahoo! Messenger. From the doorbell.wav – the buzz.wav Interesting though maybe Yahoo! could add some new wav’s in a future build of Yahoo! Messenger 9.0 (Beta). For example “You’ve Got Mail!” or something. :-bd

  8. Hi SFGC,

Yes, according to their product page, you can replace the sounds with your own MP3 files.

  9. I see no reason for anyone to buy that. Its rather useless and well stupid if you ask me. Id see my 18 month old son bite that up and throw it in the trash lol

  10. I rather have a clock by my bed that has XM, internet radio, mp3 player so I set a alarm the mp3 or XM will go off, wi-fi so it can alert me like “Good Morning, Today is August 17th, you have no mail. you have myspace comments. you have no IM messages”,

Bring out the classic bedroom clock to the new modern technology.
