Update to Mac version
July 23, 2008 on 3:23 pm | In Mac version |
Today we released an update to Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta. This latest release (version 120437) includes several bug fixes that addressed some nagging issues with stealth settings, file transfer, mobile settings, and interoperability with Windows Live Messenger.
With this release, we fixed the privacy feature so that you can assign individual stealth settings for your friends. So if you want to appear online to everyone but not to your boss Joe, you can set yourself to appear offline to him but online to your friends.
In addition, Mac users will now be able to add Windows Live Messenger contacts to their Yahoo! Messenger list without any issues. We also fixed a problem that was affecting some file transfer requests.
In prior releases, we also encountered bugs with the “Sign in to mobile device” feature which allows you to sign out but still appear online to friends with an “I’m mobile” status message. IMs sent to you are then forwarded to your mobile phone as SMS (text) messages. This latest release fixed this bug so it should work correctly now.
While these are all longstanding features of Yahoo! Messenger, they were buggy or not working properly in previous versions of the Mac version. If you have encountered problems with any of these features in the past, be sure to upgrade to this latest version of Yahoo! Messenger for Mac 3.0 Beta.
As always, we greatly appreciate your feedback. After upgrading to this latest version and using it for awhile, please stop by our feedback form and let us know what you like and don’t like about it.

Hey, any idea if you guys will have a Y! Messenger app for the iPhone?
Comment by Hauntvictim — July 23, 2008 #
And soooo the longest beta in history second only to Google’s Gmail continues. The good news is one bug fix a month between releases! lol

Yay! An update for the Mac! You guys are awesome. Keep up the good work. I can’t wait for voice chatting to be added to that chat rooms along with the ability to fade font colors!
Comment by Shannon — July 23, 2008 #
Ah! Finally! This fixes everything that makes me want to use Adium! Thank you guys!
Comment by Ran Away — July 23, 2008 #
voice in chat will never ever happen in mac client. do search engine search for keywords:
truevoice codec, license, mac, yahoo
you’ll find plenty of blogs and sites with reasons.

“communication error” means all rooms in that chat catagory are full. its a mis reported error but has been tested many times and has always shown to be the result of no available room space (thus server denies your join request and your client reports it incorectly as a communication error)….this is likely do to more bots flooding chat space do to a failed captcha security measure instead of a more correct antibot method on server end..

I still have problems with the file transfer. Some of my friends on PC’s (Windows) don’t see the files I want to send them. This is strange…
Comment by Shambu — July 24, 2008 #
Well finally had a chance to test it, this fixed absolutely none of the bugs i reported. Most importantly webcam function is still 100% program on all macs still. Clearly no beta testing was done and none of the complaints on blog have been taken seriously or bug reports sent to email have been read. This is clearly worst QA of any product in existence. At this point since it’s very clear Yahoo! doesn’t listen to the end user, I’ll just file all future complaints with the BBB and hope these negative reviews will reflect better on the Messenger team when they come in the form of formal complaints from an agency representing the end user instead.

I’ve tested again the file transfer and in particular .xls files have not been seen at all…hope this will help…

I agree with MysticalOS. I still have problems with the webcam feature. the cam turns on but sends no data to the server. when trying to view someones webcam it will just stay at “starting webcam session”
Comment by Jenny B. — July 24, 2008 #
I also think that the progression Yahoo has made with the Mac version has been very slow. its disappointing that we are stuck with a watered down version to a OS that is first rate.

Any Yahoo Messenger update for Window Vista 64bit? Since then my webcam not showing image. Only black sceen displayed.

Been waiting for the update, but unfortunately the built 120437 has the same problems as previous beta version. Cannot login and always error message “logon & password wrong… try again later”. I was able to login on Windows version but on the Mac version still did not connect. I have no choice but to go back again to version 2.5.3 and it’s working fine. Unfortunately no voice on 2.5.3. Hope you can fix the login problem on version 3.

Don’t you think instead of hyping up new features that other IM applications have had for years, you should be instead trying to eradiacte all the bots that infest the Yahoo! servers? It’s been a problem for years yet nobody in the company has decided to do anything about it. The captcha method is pointless and basically lets the bots fill the rooms. And tech support is about as dumb as it gets. Isn’t about time you finally decided to get off your butt and do something about the REAL problem with Messenger, the REAL announcement people want to hear, since you’ve turned the other way when it comes to bots (although we still complain). Maybe you should stop blogging for a while, come up with an idea, implement it, eliminate the bots and then come back here to tell us, becuase all the other add-ons are pointless, and Messenger as it is is way beyond the competition anyway.

Thanks… on my MacBook sometimes when i put it to sleep and wake it up it still shows me as mobile to other friends even thou I’m logged on and chatting through yahoo messenger. I have to quit and restart YM. it does not do it all the time.
Also is there any word if there is a version for the iPhone in the works?
Comment by Abe — July 25, 2008 #
What is the good of any version of an upgraded Messenger, if the member directory that you’d sometimes like to use to catch up with or find friends, with whom to use it, doesn’t work for months and Yahoo Support arrogantly just looks the other way not acknowledging or responding to your questions or complaints about this? Sarah will come on here and respond to a certain posted message if it’s good sound bite, P.R., or Yahoo politically correct — but otherwise, it’s Ignoresville. It’s getting really ridiculous now.

I agree that Yahoo Messenger’s technical team should work more diligently on solving the current major flaws of Yahoo Messenger for Mac instead of adding “new features”. I think the team should identify the 4 major areas of greatest concern for Mac Users (ie: Image display problems, Webcam issues, voice-chat, etc) and devote their combined intellectual abilities on solving those issues in a timely fashion. For instance, most Mac Users find it hard to understand why the problem related to the inability of display images to appear on certain Windows and Mac users chat windows still persists after almost a year. More troubling is the randomness as sometimes the images are able to seen on your chat friends computers and other times not…

Please. Get us voice in the conferences! Please put a bit more effort in to this product. The mac version is waaay behind the windows version.
Soon something better will come along and no one will use your product, and since everyone nowadays is switching to mac, you will have no customers left…
Please. Tell your managers to do something about this situation…

ZZZ, strange your cam works, me and several friends all use macs and haven’t seen it work in months, not only does it do nothing, but i’ve used interarchy to watch packets and have found the client doesn’t even ATTEMPT to open a cam connection, it just gets stuck at connecting indefinitely, but according to interarchy, no packets are ever sent, period. It never sends a cam request to server, so it doesn’t connect because app doesn’t even try. That’s just real stupidity on developers part.

Mine has worked fine since i bought my MBA in march Cam and all, the only thing that didn’t work out to well was the latest update wouldn’t let me sign in and it would crash. so i just re-installed it a week later and now every mac compatible feature works fine.

I can’t find the dmg file to put it on my desktop to get into messenger. The website says it’s downloaded but i don’t see anything get downloaded or see where it goes. i’ve downloaded it twice now…same results!

i dunno..i have update to 10.5.4 hmmm…it seems 10.5.4 are fixing everything. from safari that often crashes, YM and Adobe, now everything works great. but not YM, then i download this update and it works good. just like at Windows (hahaha..) mayb if u uninstall it first..then install it again (with the new update) and use appzapper to remove it. just suggesting. i still have several problems with 10.5.4 but not YM. like i cant send attachments on Apple mail and my boot camp Windows keep saying Windows cant find this file…i have install windows os twice…but it still works.

anybody know how i see the entire history of all chat on my account?
Comment by notsodutch — August 6, 2008 #
Hi notsodutch,
In the Mac version, go to the Window menu and select “Message Archive”. This will show you the archive for your IM conversations on that computer.
Note that archives are specific to the computer for our downloadable versions; only Yahoo! Messenger for the Web stores your archives online so they’re accessible from anywhere.
If you’re IM’ing from different computers, you’ll need to use an outside service like dexrex.com to archive messages across those systems. You can find out more about it here:
http://www.ymessengerblog.com/blog/2008/06/24/review-im-archiving-on-dexrexcom/
Hope that helps,

I believe that your team is missing a very, very important issue. I am aware that Yahoo messenger is supposed to report all crashes to you, however there are problems which specifically go unreported. The reason for this being that Yahoo does not crash, instead it hangs indefinitely until it is forced quit. After restarting yahoo, no error reporting occurs. This problem occurs almost everytime I am viewing more than one webcam (including my own). Sometimes it happens much faster than others. I think it may be a RAM issue because it seems to happen more quickly when I am using more than one program. This could be a sign of a major memory leak in whatever controls the webcam.

Just wanted to confirm what “pissed” said earlier: Every now and then Yahoo! Messenger eats %100 of CPU and the only thing I can do is to restart it. Or switch to Adium for the time being which does not have voice and that sucks!
System config: Leopard, Core 2 Duo, etc. etc.

I still don’t understand why every test machine i test on, including 3 different locations and internet connections, 4 different macs, webcam does not function AT ALL. And people posting on this blog say it works fine. In every test I have tried, webcam NEVER finds a server, to view or broadcast webcam, just indefinitely tries contacting server waiting for a response that never comes. I have verified ports and everything. amsn and ichat cam works no problems through open ports in router, and OS X’s firewall is off because 10.5’s version of it is total crap anyway, when it’s on, it blocks ports even though they are supposed to be open, and the same app will ask to allow connections every single launch as if it forgot what you chose the last time..

It doesn’t look as if you fixed anything. My file transfers work once then don’t. The cam doesn’t always work. The only thing you seemed to have fixed is to make Yahoo a few dollars with the cell calling. And no photoshare feature. Macs are made for this kind of interaction. Keep up the bad work Yahoo.

I kept on having problems with file transfers in my YM-mac. was able to download the first file transfer and then the second one would not connect at all.. At the file transfer window, it would only say “Connecting..” but I could wait for hours but it still would not connect. Please help! Email me or something.. Thanks!

Hi. I’m using Mac OS X 10.4.11, I have installed the last YM 3.0. But when I login YM with my current account, the application does not show the main window, it appears as in processing, but my friends can see me.
However, when I login by another YM account, that application works well.
I can also login my account via website, it’s fine.
I tried to uninstall and re-install YM but it cant help!
What could I do? Do I not uninstall completely? Or something wrong?

Yahoo chatrooms on Mas OS. The chatrooms don’t seem the way they were when I was on WIndows. Up until recently, Mac users couldn’t even use the yahoo chatrooms. Now I can get on some of them, but the features seem limited.
1. Am I only being seen by Mac users and Not PC users? I used to be able to go on with my cam and I’d have alot of Cam requests. Now, NoBody seems to request my Cam. I used to have cam requests from people all over the worlds, such as Phillipines, India, etc. Now Nothing!
I’m not doing anything differently. It almost seems like there’s nobody out there, like 95% OF THE “Users” are actually bots. Kinda like a Twilight Zone episode for cyber-space. Seriously though, is there some logical reason for this? Have international users been cut off? As a Mac user, is there some Mac/Yahoo reason (besides just being unpopular) that people are not seeing my cam icon and/or not seeing my messages in the chatrooms? I know it sounds silly, but can someone take an honest stab at answering this?
